8 best trout fly lines

Trout fly lines play a crucial role in fly fishing, a popular method of angling that involves using artificial flies to catch fish. The fly line is a specialized type of fishing line designed for casting the lightweight flies used in fly fishing. Here are some key points about trout fly lines:

  1. Weight Forward (WF) Lines:

    • Weight Forward lines are the most common type of fly line used for trout fishing. They have a thicker and heavier front section, which helps in casting larger and heavier flies over longer distances.
  2. Floating Lines:

    • Floating fly lines are designed to stay on the water's surface. They are ideal for fishing on or near the surface and are commonly used for dry fly fishing, where the fly imitates an insect floating on the water.
  3. Sinking Lines:

    • Sinking fly lines are designed to sink below the water's surface. They are used for fishing in deeper waters or when you want to target fish at different depths. Sink rates can vary, allowing anglers to choose lines that sink slowly or quickly.
  4. Intermediate Lines:

    • Intermediate fly lines sink at a slower rate than full sinking lines, typically around 1 to 2 inches per second. They are useful for fishing just below the water's surface and are often employed in still waters.
  5. Backing:

    • Fly lines are often attached to backing, which is a thin, strong line that provides additional length to the fly line. Backing is crucial when a fish makes a long run, as it prevents the reel from running out of line.
  6. Taper Design:

    • Fly lines have a taper, meaning they vary in diameter along their length. This taper affects casting performance. Weight Forward lines, with their thicker front section, provide better casting distance and accuracy.
  7. Color Coding:

    • Fly lines come in various colors, and some anglers prefer lines with high-visibility colors to help track the line on the water. However, subtle or neutral colors are often preferred in situations where fish may be easily spooked.
  8. Matching the Line to the Rod:

    • It's essential to match the fly line to the rod weight. For example, a 5-weight fly line is designed to be used with a 5-weight fly rod. This ensures proper casting performance.
  9. Maintenance:

    • Cleaning and maintaining fly lines are crucial for their longevity and performance. Dirt and debris can affect casting and floating/sinking abilities.
  10. Specialized Lines:

    • There are specialized fly lines designed for specific types of trout fishing, such as nymphing or streamer fishing. These lines may have unique features tailored to particular fishing scenarios.

Understanding the characteristics of different trout fly lines is essential for successful fly fishing. The choice of line depends on factors such as the type of water you're fishing, the target species, and the specific techniques you're employing.

User questions & answers

Question: Do these leaders really float? just bought a "floating" leader that did not float even without a fly tied on
Answer: I have never had a lesser that was advertised as floating. That is for the fly line. The leader will tend to float due to the surface tension of the water and a floating fly will keep it in the surface tension whereas a wet fly will pull the leader below the surface and it will gradually sink. Hope that helps.
Question: Did anyone else receive 3 leaders in this “6 pack
Answer: Yes, I only receive 3 leaders... I bought 2 “ 6 packs leader” one is 9 ft-4X and one is 9 ft-3X, and both of them were only 3 leaders...
Question: How does the loop tie on? Is their supposed to be a loop on the flooting line? My doesn’t. I’m completely new to fly fishing
Answer: 5th picture down is how it attaches to you fly line. If you don't have a loop at the end of your fly line ask a fly shop how to tie it on, it's an easy knot. might want to get this book The Orvis Guide to Leaders, Knots, and Tippets: A Detailed, Streamside Field Guide To Leader Construction, Fly-Fishing Knots, Tippets and More Paperback – April 1, 2018
Question: What does the "X" behind the numbers mean? I’m new to fly fishing and need help choosing a leader
Answer: The "X" is left over from the word extrusion. Leaders used to be made by pulling them through ever smaller diameter openings (extrusions) and the more times (e.g. "X") they went through the openings the more extrusions there were. Thus a 3X tippet was extruded 3 times and a 4X tippet was extruded 4 times and would be smaller. The reference point, 0X, is a diameter of 0.011" and each extrusion reduces the diameter by 0.001". Thus, a 1X tippet is 0.010", a 2X tippet is 0.009", and so forth. The strength of the tippet depends upon the diameter and the material used to make it. The other important consideration is to match the size of the leader/tippet to the hook you are using. That's another discussion but roughly the size of the tippet can be determined by dividing the hook size by 3. If, as an example, you planned to use a #18 (small hook), divide by 3 and that means the tippet should be 6X. It can be a little larger but if much larger then the tippet won't fit in the hook eye. It is complicated.
Question: what is the line profile of this line
Answer: tapered , with belly on the end it is forward type, very nice line for the money , fished with it for one week so far so good,2 loops
Question: Is this line a braided core or mono core
Answer: mono
Question: What is the grain weight for the WF 5 Wt
Answer: First 30 ft of line weighs 140 grains go a 5wt line. There are charts available for reference.
Question: Maybe a dumb question.. But does it matter which side is tied to the reel
Answer: Yes it does matter unless you are using a double taper line but any line with wf (weight forward )should have the thinnest part of the taper connected to the reel so the line will cast properly with the heaviest part of the line shooting forward

User questions & answers

Question: Are the yellow and orange lines colorfast? The last orange backing I bought bled and stained my flyline
Answer: I have had this yellow backing on my fly reel for about 6 months. I have not noticed any bleeding or fading at all in about twenty or so uses. I have this backing on a 4 weight outfit that I use for panfish so I have never had a fish take me into the backing.
Question: Is it floating line
Answer: Since this is only backing, no it isn't a floating line. It's not coated and will sink unlike the main fly line, assuming that it is a floater.
Question: what are the diameters (in mm) for each one
Answer: There are three brands of braided backing on my tying bench - SF, SA, and Cortland - none specify diameter, only strength and length of the line.
Question: I have 5wt line. Which backing should i get? (20lb or 30lb
Answer: it depends on your fly reel. all fly reels are not equal. I have a 7/8 wght fly reel and end up only using maybe not even half of the 30lbs backing that I got. if you are not catching 30lb plus fish, go with 20lb backing. but if your reel is holds a lot of line than go with 30lb. hope this helps☺have a great day. this line is soft/strong & it benefits the fly line well.
