I frequently use it in a similiar way and glad it's very strong and won't easily break when used for gestures and other movements. It's a good choice if you don't want to buy an expensive umbrella, over $300, like the one Mycroft Holmes uses. It's a good buy, I highly recommend it.

Answer:	Mine did not have this problem so I really can't advise you...I do grab the ring holding the staves and pull it down towards the handle while pushing the button in order to close the umbrella however
