8 best small propane heaters

Small propane heaters are portable heating devices that use propane as a fuel source to generate heat. They are commonly used in various settings, including golf carts, to provide warmth and comfort in cold weather. Here's what you should know about small propane heaters in the context of golf cart accessories:

  1. Design and Size: Small propane heaters are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them suitable for use in golf carts. They are typically small enough to fit in the limited space available in a golf cart without causing obstruction.

  2. Propane Fuel: These heaters use propane gas as their primary fuel source. Propane is readily available in small, portable canisters, making it convenient for use in outdoor activities like golfing.

  3. Heat Output: Small propane heaters come in various models with different heat output capacities. The heat output is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). The choice of heater should be based on the size of the golf cart and the desired level of warmth.

  4. Safety Features: Many small propane heaters are equipped with safety features such as automatic shut-off mechanisms that activate in case of tip-overs or low oxygen levels. These features are essential for safe operation.

  5. Ignition Methods: Propane heaters typically have ignition methods, including manual ignition using a built-in starter or automatic ignition with a push-button or electronic ignition system.

  6. Mounting Options: Some heaters are designed to be mounted or clamped onto the golf cart's frame or dashboard, while others can be placed on the floor or secured using brackets.

  7. Runtime: The runtime of a small propane heater depends on the size of the propane canister used and the heat output setting. It's important to have spare canisters on hand for longer outings.

  8. Temperature Control: Many heaters allow users to adjust the heat output to achieve the desired temperature within the golf cart. This is useful for maintaining comfort in changing weather conditions.

  9. Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is important when using propane heaters in enclosed spaces like golf carts. Ensure that there is some airflow to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide.

  10. Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the burner and checking for gas leaks, is essential to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the heater.

In summary, small propane heaters are valuable accessories for golf carts, especially in colder climates or during early morning rounds. They provide a convenient source of heat to keep golfers warm and comfortable while on the course. However, it's crucial to prioritize safety when using propane heaters and to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation and operation.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this item be returned
Answer: I'm sure it can be.
Question: does it work in a box deer stand
Answer: I am sure it will. I use mine in a moving golf cart with a cover on it, and it works great. You need some ventilation though. The box deer stand shouldn't be airtight.
Question: Can you use a 16 oz cylinder
Answer: 14.1 oz or 16 oz ... “Take your pick”... [have a photo here to ‘add’ to that, but can’t seem to find a way to upload it...]
Question: New unit and new propane tank. Unit ignites but does not catch and stay lit, any suggestions
Answer: I have different model from Texsport. On mine the instructions say to turn the heat to high while holding in the red button. It would probably work on a lower setting, but would take longer to warm the bulb.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers
Answer: For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired)
Question: can i hook a large propane tank to his
Answer: Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port).
Question: How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister
Answer: Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty.
Question: Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning
Answer: As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly.

User questions & answers

Question: where is it made
Answer: China
Question: In a golf cart, does the wind cause it to go out
Answer: I use it in a covered cart so wind isn't an issue. However I Think it would take a lot of wind to extinguish the burner.
Question: If you had to choose this vs. the Mr. Heater equivalent, which would you choose and why
Answer: I would choose this over Mr. Heater because I plan on camping above 7,000 ft. and Mr. Heater’s safety features are prone to prohibit their use per lack of oxygen levels.
Question: What is the smallest tent you have used this in
Answer: ONLY .. in canvas tents. Period. Really. Think.
Question: Hi , does it come with the tank
Answer: No it does not, but it has everything to hook it up to the propane cylinder.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i hook up to my unvented propane log gas heater
Answer: Yes, you can use this to hook up your log gas heater. GlobalTowne is an authorized Mr. Heater distributor.
Question: Can we use this hook up for propane
Answer: Mr. Heater F271239 One-Stop Universal Gas-Appliance Hook-Up Kit is a suave kit designed to give the consumer any possible gas connection, and has several different sized gas fittings. You should be able to connect directly to your propane supply line with ease.
Question: my gas heater will light but will only stay lit for a short time. I've cleaned. the apiture. with alcohol. but that doednt seem to help. long term
Answer: The oxygen sensor may be turning it off. Make sure there is airflow around the unit. At altitudes of approx. 4500+ it may shut off for much the same reason. Blow out the Aperture with air. There is a little hole down on the gas nozzle for that purpose. Canned air is best. A compressor may break something. I had a friend who just blew it out with his breath and it worked better. Clean the entire unit of dust and debris. Check the gas debris pipe and empty the sediment. Check your bottle, it may be near empty, or the control valve may be partially closed.
Question: Is the valve 1/2" FIP to 1/2" flare? Is the connector 1/2" ID? What are the EXACT specifications on each of the adapters? Shocked it sells W/ no info
Answer: The description says 3/8 and 3/8 but the one I got was 1/2 x 1/2 with adapters. It says universal but for me probably not since I actually needed 3/8 female and this only comes with 3/8 male so I will have to spend more money to make this work.
Question: Can you HANG this from something
Answer: YES you can hang this heater. It's been done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZsVX6mh8O4
Question: Does anybody have trouble lighting this heater? Seems I need to hold the ignition button in for a minute and it really hurts my thumb
Answer: Hey Spike, I agree with Thomas W. Mine wouldn't start on the first try either. You have to hold the ignition button down, wait a few seconds, then depress again. It's kind of a pain, but it works. A more annoying issue for me was wanting to use it in my golf cart, but with every tiny bump, the safety feature kicked in and off it went. So, it is safer for home use. For the cart, I bought the Coleman Catalytic Heater with the special holder that fits in the cup holders. It's more quiet too. Stay warm!
Question: With an adapter hose can it be used with a large propane cylinder
Answer: Not a problem. Make a 10"x10" box. Nail 2x6 together in the shape of a U. Then put 3/8" inch plywood on top and bottom (3/8" a must on top). Then make a 2 1/4" hole in the center of the top plywood. Next screw the main heater assembly into the filter with the top plywood in between (the two should come together snug leaving a very small separation which will allow the heater to rotate with no chance of a leak but still be secure). Then attach the hose and tank. This box allows for a large tank to be attached, the heater can rotate and the tipsy problem is gone.. Just remember to turn off the tank first to burn up the gas in the line before turning off the heater.
Question: Has anyone used it tent camping? I'm afraid of fire and fumes, but the cub scouts insist in camping in sub freezing temps
Answer: I used it last summer (2017), at night We went to bed late around 1:00 am, and usually by 5:00 am the 1lb tank is already empty and it's went the temp is the lowest, I spent about a tank per night, kept our 8 person tent warm, we have ventilation at the top and all the heat went up but I rather have ventilation that non at all, I'll probably wake up at 5 and replace the propane tank. We camped I bigbear, CA and it was cold at night, I might try an electric heater plugged into my Honda but still you have Carbon monoxide coming from the generator.

Answer: This 1/2" ID natural gas hose could provide adequate gas flow up to 100,000BTU/hour of heat to meet your more needs for other grills of 30" or larger sizes. Question: Can this hose for propane or just natural gas
Answer: Dear Mitmitchell,This hose fits for both propane and natural gas.
Question: Will this work for a weber spirit
Answer: Yes, this can work for a weber spirit 210.
Question: Can the 2 heating heads be rotated and if so, independently of each other
Answer: They can be rotated independently
Question: do you need electric to ignite
Answer: You do need thumbs, but no electricity.
Question: The burners light but switch off after i release the safety shut off valve plunger, no matter how long i keep it pushed in. it should stay lit
Answer: Not sure if you have your problem fixed yet. But I had the same problem awhile back. I pushed the sensor probe closer to the heat element. I was too far away to stay heated and keep the unit on.
Question: How long does a normal supermarket propane tank last with this unit
Answer: That depends first I have no idea what a "Supermarket propane Tank" is, if it is a standard 20lb propane tank which you see on every gas grill and on this illustration then I can answer that question. 1 gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds, a 20 pound tank weighs 17 lbs empty and 37 lbs with 20 lbs of propane in it, a "full" 20 lb cylinder should have 4.7 gallons or propane in it.Now we have to discuss this model of Mr. heater which has two burners, you can run it on one or both and you can set it for low medium or high which is many differentt total burn times, I will assume either one or both with no mixture of settings.Single burner approx. operating hr.: 52/Low 37/Med 30/HighBTU output: 8,000 12,000 14,000Double burner approx. operating hr.: 25/Low 18/Med 15/HighBTU output: 16,000 24,000 28,000
Question: how long does it last on a small propane tank
Answer: The 1# tank will ice up and slowly turn off the heater on anything but the lowest setting. That lasts about 2 hours. A little buddy heater with 4K/9K Btu works best with the 1# cylinders. I have the hose hookup for a 20# tank and it's nice to have the option of using either size. You have to light this one with a lighter which is just another thing to forget to pack.
Question: Just tried to make coffee on it and the grill started to collapse is there a sturdier grill for it
Answer: As far as I know... No. A simular thing happened to me. I reattached the grill using good old fashioned wire hanger twisted. This was only a temporary fix.
Question: Did anyone get the "foot" for the 1 lb. bottles and is it a worthwhile add-on
Answer: Not sure what you're referring to. The one lb. bottle hangs suspended when connected. I wouldn't recommend getting this model. Get the model MH12C if you can. The regulator broke after a couple months and I couldn't return it. Instead I bought the regulator that was for the MH12C and adapted it to fit the MH15C. Since then it's been working great for a year. I also recommend purchasing the hose adapter so you can run off a 20 lb. bottle. It'll last a lot longer
Question: how long does a 1lb bottle last compared to a 20lb bottle
Answer: A one pound bottle on medium setting will last about 1-1/2 hour so figure at least 25 hrs for a 20 pounder.
