Answer:	My Mom gave me two pairs of Thorlos over 10 years ago. I wear them almost every week. They aren't as cushiony as they once were. They are still my most comfortable socks (and I own other Thorlos). They aren't torn, nor do they have any rips. In other words, these would be some of the least expensive socks you'll ever buy, even if the price were for just one sock (you get a pair).

Answer:	I have tried many and Thurlo lite hikers are hands down my favorites. He would take a medium. They weren't around when I went to Philmont, but I wish they had been. The light hikers are best for warmer hiking, but do fine even in winter.Keep you dry and well padded.

As someone who works in a running store, I'd say you want the sock to fit a little more snuggly while the shoe should give you some room. So if the chart has medium as 9.5 I would go with that. You can also try and return - Amazon is good with that.
