Answer:	Previous advice should be good to get it open. I recommend looking at the male threads, on the canister body not the lid, when you have it open. The seam where the two halves of the canister are molded together can be pronounced and I found scrapping it down with a knife so that it doesn't interfere with the lid helped tremendously.

Then packed one of the original packages to heat them in. It fit all those plus a bunch of Clif bars and assorted little packages of drink mix. The single serve kind. I would say one person using one ready made meal per meal and snacks for the trail could fit food for about 3 days or so. Remember a quarter to open it with and the bag it comes with because it is very slippery.

To hang, make a loop larger than the base but smaller than the top - slide this in and hang. Easy if you can tie basic knots. If a bear does get it down, it'll just slide out of the loop so the bear can't carry it off.
