A professional mirror compass with top-of-the-line features for precise directional measurements Hailing from Suunto's MC series, the top-of-the-line MC-2G global compass is an invaluable tool for people who require highly accurate and reliable directional measurements, such as surveyors, miners, architects, rescue patrols, hikers, boaters, and the military. The MC-2G boasts a fixed declination adjustment systemstandard throughout the rangethat's especially useful when working in areas with large magnetic variation. The tool's additional sighting hole, meanwhile, ensures superior accuracy, as does the jewel bearing. Add in a mirrored lid, a baseplate with a round magnifying lens, a clinometer that measures the ground slope, and a luminous bezel and markings and you have a versatile, practical compass for a variety of applications. The real star of the MC-2G, however, is its global needle, which works anywhere on the planet. Previously, most compasses functioned well in only one of five geographic zones. That's because the compasses were balanced differently based on the zone's inclination, i.e., the vertical intensity and direction of the Earth's magnetic field. However, as people began to travel more, it became clear that globe-hoppers needed compasses with a greater geographical range. Suunto responded by developing two-zone systemswhich work in either the northern or southern hemisphereand one-zone systems such as the global MC-2G. Now there's no need to purchase several compasses before embarking on your around-the-world eco adventure. The MC-2G, which also sports a red nylon lanyard for around-the-neck use, measures 2.5 by 0.6 by 3.9 inches (W x H x D) with the lid closed and weighs a mere 2.65 ounces. It's also backed by a lifetime warranty.

Suunto A-30L IN Introductory Compass
Hailing from Suunto's A-Range of recreational compasses, the A-30L is a compact, well-designed compass for hiking and orienteering, with a luminous bezel and markings that are ideal for navigating in poor visibility. The highly accurate instrument is made of durable, clear, scratch-resistant acrylic that's been ergonomically designed to fit in the palm of your hand. More significantly, the compass employs Suunto's two-zone system to achieve precise, accurate readings regardless of where you're traveling. Previously, most compasses functioned well in only one of five geographic zones. That's because the compasses were balanced differently based on the zone's inclination, i.e., the vertical intensity and direction of the Earth's magnetic field. However, as people began to travel more, it became clear that globe-hopping adventurers needed compasses with a greater geographical range. Suunto's two-zone system, by contrast, considers only the northern and southern hemispheres. In practice, this means that a Suunto compass designed for the northern hemisphere--as the A-30L is--will still work for a fair distance into the southern hemisphere and vice-versa. Suunto is one of only two compass manufacturers to offer two-zone compasses.
The lightweight A-30L compass also features a fixed declination correction scale, a jewel bearing, marking holes for drawing control points, a magnifying lens, and a patent-pending snap-lock that detaches easily from the lanyard. The compass measures 2.2 by 4.3 inches and is backed by a lifetime warranty.
- Lightweight, versatile compass made of durable, clear, scratch-resistant acrylic
- Employs Suunto's two-zone system for reliable readings in northern hemisphere
- Fixed declination correction scale, jewel bearing, and marking holes for control points
- Luminous bezel and markings for navigating in poor visibility; lanyard with detachable snap-lock
User questions & answers
Question: | Is the compass for northern or southern hemisphere |
Answer: | Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 2.6 x 0.4 inches |
Question: | Does it come with basic instructions |
Answer: | You should be some distance away (30 meters or 100 feet?) from a car to get accurate readings from a magnetic compass. The iron and steel in an automobile definitely attract the compass needle and would give you errors if you were close to any such ferrous metals. |
Question: | The photo and "color" or model don't seem to match. the "nh metric" shows miles and inches in the photo. is this correct? i want the mile/inch version |
Answer: | 1 |
Question: | Can you get rid of the silly (i.e. breakable) lanyard snap clip and tie the lanyard (or a piece of paracord) directly to the compass |
Answer: | No, it does not have an adjustment where you can compensate for declination. Once you get used to using the declination in your area you will find to make the mathematical correction easily. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how heavy is it |
Answer: | I open and closed mine often and had no issues. They closures seem really sturdy. |
Question: | What are the dimensions of this item |
Answer: | Yes. No problems! |
Question: | I live at about 16 degrees magnetic declination. Can I set the compass for that correction or am I supposed to eyeball it every time |
Answer: | I’m sure it will hold away structurally provided it’s anchored securely enough to carry the weight. |
Question: | I don't understand how the clip and lanyard attach |
Answer: | Provided you can drill directly into the concrete wall and have the appropriate concrete drill bit, you should have no problem. If you have a sheet rock wall with studs and then break a concrete behind that, you will need to have appropriate blocking. Better get a contractor to help you with this. |

Accurate and Reliable Mirror Compasses The MC range of mirror compasses provides an invaluable tool for those who place a particular premium on accurate and reliable directional measurements; for example surveyors, miners, architects, rescue patrols, hikers, boaters and the military. The declination adjustment system, standard throughout the range, is especially useful when working in areas of large magnetic variation, while the sighting notch provides superior accuracy. The MC-2 model is also available with the Global Balancing System. Field compasses in general Mechanical compasses have been working as the navigator since several thousands of years. Still today magnetic compass is environmentally friendly, cheap and the most reliable tool when choosing the course. The oldest Suunto field compasses, which are still in use, are manufactured in 1938. A high quality field compass hardly needs any other service than washing in fresh water from time to time. The compass works without any external power supply. The compass gets its power from nature - from the magnetic north pole. COMPASS BALANCING Two Geographical Balancing Zones The vertical intensity and direction of the earth's magnetic field, the inclination, influences the horizontal plane of a compass needle according to the latitude where it is used. Due to inclination, compasses must be balanced for different geographical zones in order to keep the needle in a horizontal position.
- Large sighting mirror, 50% more accurate reading than non-mirrored models
- Ergonomic, luminous and two color bezel ring (luminous)
- Works anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere
- Notched capsule for easy grip, even with gloves. 1:24K, 1:62.5K scales
- Detachable lanyard with snap lock

Product description
The weather was clear for days as your expedition ascended 10,000 feet, but then the barometric pressure started to change and your Storm Alarm went off. Thanks to the Suunto Core Altimeter Watch, you set up your high altitude camp ahead of the big storm and are in your sleeping bag sipping hot cocoa before it hits. Bravo.
Building on the success of the venerable Suunto Vector, the Suunto Core keeps you informed of conditions while you hike, bike, or camp, making it a terrific companion for outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. What can the Suunto Core do for you? For starters, it can sense an approaching squall even when the sky looks clear. This intelligent Storm Alarm--one of several intelligent features designed to keep you safe and secure--is activated by a rapid drop in air pressure over a three-hour period. Once the Core senses the change, the Storm Alarm sounds and flashes, letting you know that something unpleasant is fast approaching. The built-in altimeter, meanwhile, displays your current elevation, shows how much you've climbed or descended, and records your entire session for later analysis. Accurate to within 30,000 feet, the altimeter is an extremely valuable tool for mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and wilderness travel. Add in such additional features as a barometer, a digital thermometer, a weather trend indicator, and a digital compass and you have a terrific wrist-top computer for almost all your outdoor needs.
The altimeter contributes to your excursion in several ways. If you're standing on or near an obvious geographic feature, such as a ridge, trail, or creek, the altimeter can alert you to your current elevation and help you find your position on a topographic map. Similarly, if you plan on climbing a slope to a certain elevation and then traversing, the Core can help you stay on course. And as a bonus, the Suunto Core includes a unique start-from-zero function, so you don't have to enter a reference altitude. Instead, with the single push of a button, the altimeter will begin tracking your ascent and descent.
The Core also includes a barometer, which measures and records air pressure to help you predict changing conditions--from sunny skies to hair-bending electrical storms. The barometer helps you decide whether to bring a soft shell or rain shell jacket when the skies look ominous, or even when to high-tail it back to the car. In general, low pressure brings inclement weather, while high pressure brings stability and clear skies. If you've arrived at camp and notice the pressure starting to plunge, it's probably a good idea to secure the tent and crawl in. Likewise, if you were on a climb, it would be prudent to find shelter and retreat. Even at home, the Suunto Core barometer can look beyond office walls, skyscrapers, and nearby hills to help you plan for upcoming activities.
If you want a weather forecast that extends out a few hours, you can turn to the built-in weather trend indicator. The indicator shows the barometric history for the last three and six hours, helping you predict the weather with amazing accuracy. What's more, the watch doesn't give you a regional forecast posted earlier in the day, but rather the most current information about the weather directly overhead. And no outdoor watch is worth its salt without a digital compass, a great tool for keeping track of your direction while skiing, hiking, or exploring a new city. You can set and follow a bearing with a traditional rotating bezel, or simply point the top of the watch toward your intended destination and lock it in.
Additional features include several traditional watch functions, including dual times, a date display, and an alarm; predicted times for sunrise and sunset to help you maximize your daylight hours; an automatic Alti/Baro mode that senses movement or lack thereof and switches between the altimeter and barometer accordingly; a depth meter that provides accurate water depth readings to 30 feet; and the ability to function in English, German, French, and Spanish. Available in such colors as all black, aluminum black, light black, black orange, aluminum brown, light green, black yellow, and steel , the Suunto Core carries a two-year warranty.

About Suunto
Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation. Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier needle, better readings, and a new level of accuracy.
By 1950 the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952, Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The next step was improving the stability and accuracy of marine compasses. The first marine compass, the Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. In 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.
In the 1960s, the compass range grew further and Suunto introduced its first diving compass--initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found. Suunto's exports and business grew steadily and Suunto then focused on combining its strength in precision mechanics with new skills in electronics. Accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness have been Suunto's key values from the very beginning of the company history.
Today, Suunto is a leading designer and manufacturer of sports instruments for training, diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, sailing, and golf. True to its roots, Suunto is today the world's biggest compass manufacturer. Prized for their design, accuracy and dependability, Suunto sports instruments combine the aesthetics and functionality of watches with sport-specific computers that help athletes at all levels analyze and improve performance. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, Suunto employs more than 500 people worldwide and distributes its products to nearly 60 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Helsinki-based Amer Sports Corporation with the sister brands Wilson, Salomon, Atomic, Precor, and Mavic.

User questions & answers
Question: | what size wrist does the standard black rubber strap fit |
Answer: | My wrist is ~8.5", maybe a little more. The Vector band fits my wrist on the last hole. There is not enough band left to fit into the sleeve intended to secure the end of the band. The Core band is about 3/4" longer. |
Question: | My watch is in another language how do i get it to english? i believe it's in german |
Answer: | Push the 2 left buttons and upper and lower right buttons at the same time, puts the watch in sleep mode then push right center button and wait for it to turn on, it’ll say language, scroll with right upper and lower buttons |
Question: | Does this track distance |
Answer: | As far as I know, no, A B C, altimeter, barometric, compass. I was debating on this watch vs. a GPS watch, but I wouldn't use the GPS watch as much. I hope this helps |
Question: | Has anyone had problems with Suunto not honoring warranties for those who purchased the Suunto core from amazon.com |
Answer: | I have been researching the Suunto Core All Black to find the best price for purchase. One of the key features needed is an alarm clock, but I could not find any definitive information as to whether it had one or not. Even the Suunto website and manual was not very cut and dry with an answer. I contacted Suunto customer service and asked about this function (pf which they responded in the affirmative), but I also asked the comment made here stating Amazon purchases are not honored via warranty. Suunto stated this is COMPLETELY FALSE! Amazon IS an authorized reseller. You need only keep your receipt. Finally have this issue/question clearly and easily resolved after so many guesses since 2013! |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference this for Suunto M- 3G Compass. Need a Quick compass |
Answer: | It depends if your glasses are made out of metal or not. If it is then no since that will change the direction that it’s pointing. If your glasses are made of plastic then yes it is easy to use. I honestly don’t have a problem using it without my glasses even though I can’t see in the distance while I use it for work. I can see it may be a problem with far sighted people if you use my method. |
Question: | can it use in Thailand and related zone |
Answer: | Hello, Yes, absolutely it does. The scale is marked by 10ths of degrees, two numbers, one in positive direction above the other marked in negative direction, e.g. 350/170 |
Question: | Is this easy to use for a beginner |
Answer: | The company doesn’t engrave on the compass, but if you do it yourself then yay. |
Question: | what is the best sighting compass for traversing for the money |
Answer: | No. do not glow in the dark. |

The device features 2-3 times larger tilt potential than in conventional diving compasses and provides easy-to-read numerals. The SK-8 has been improved for faster stabilization and enhanced readability. Both northern and southern hemisphere models can be used over a wider area of the globe thanks to an upgraded magnet. By adding the SK-8 compass to different Suunto Combo consoles, you can create a personal console that meets your specific needs. For example, CB-Double can be made by adding the SK-8/DS compass to the reverse side of the CB-One. Or you can configure your CB-One console to a CB-Two by adding an SK-8 compass on top. If you add the SK-8/DS compass on to the reverse side of the CB-Two In Line, you get a CB-Double in Line. And CB-Three In Line console is made by adding a SK-8 compass on top of a Two In Line console. Compass Balancing The vertical intensity and direction of the earth's magnetic field, the inclination, influences the horizontal plane of a compass needle according to the latitude where it is used. Due to inclination, compasses must be balanced for different geographical zones in order to keep the needle in a horizontal position. Previously, the globe was divided into five different balance zones in which specific compasses functioned. However, as people travel more and more, the need for a compass with a greater geographical range has increased. Thanks to Suunto's 'Two Zone System' there are only two balance zones to consider in compass use - the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. In practice, this means that a Suunto compass designed for the northern hemisphere will still work for a fair distance into the southern hemisphere, and vice-versa. Available in a variety of configurations
- Withstands sub-zero temperatures, Quick stabilization
- Phosphorescent compass card
- Rotating bezel with notches on every fifth degree
- Side reading window for easy underwater navigation
- Balanced for use in the Northern Hemisphere
