However, on areas of black ink, it would burn a hole through the paper in 5 to 10 seconds, but I could not get a flame. I tried blowing on the paper, and tried multiple thicknesses of paper, all to no avail. The lens on the Swisscard is about 5/8". I tried the same experiment with a 3" magnifier, which collects about 23 times more power. I could rapidly char and burn through multiple sheets of the newsprint, but found that it was very difficult to get the paper to burn. It seemed to work best with the paper vertical and modest blowing. I could only get a fire started in about 1 in 10 attempts. I then tried the cardboard from the tube inside a roll of paper towels, using the 3" lens. This combination could quite easily start a fire. However, the Swisscard could not char the tan surface of the cardboard. |
