3 best mountain bike grips

Mountain bike grips are an essential component of a mountain bike's handlebar system. They play a critical role in ensuring a rider's comfort, control, and overall riding experience. These grips are specifically designed for off-road cycling, where riders encounter rugged terrain and need a secure hold on the handlebars.

Here are some key aspects of mountain bike grips:

  1. Material: Mountain bike grips are typically made from materials like rubber, foam, silicone, or a combination of these materials. Rubber grips are common for their durability and ability to provide a good grip, even in wet conditions.Foam grips offer a softer and more cushioned feel, while silicone grips provide a tacky and comfortable surface.

  2. Design: Grips come in various designs and patterns to suit different riding preferences. Some have textured patterns or ridges to improve grip and control, especially in challenging conditions. Ergonomic grips are shaped to provide additional wrist support and reduce fatigue during long rides.

  3. Length: Grips vary in length to accommodate different hand sizes and riding styles. Longer grips may be preferred by riders with larger hands, while shorter grips are suitable for those with smaller hands or those who prefer a more direct feel of the handlebar.

  4. Lock-On Grips: Many mountain bike grips feature a lock-on design, where they are attached to the handlebars using clamps or collars. This ensures that the grips stay securely in place, even when exposed to rough trails. Lock-on grips are easy to install and replace.

  5. Flange or Flangeless: Grips may have a flange, which is a raised lip on the outboard end of the grip, or they can be flangeless (without a lip). The choice between flange and flangeless grips is a matter of personal preference. Flanges can help keep the rider's hands from slipping off the ends of the handlebars.

  6. Colors and Aesthetics: Mountain bike grips come in a variety of colors and styles, allowing riders to customize their bikes to their liking and match their grips to the overall aesthetic of their bike.

  7. Diameter: Grips are available in different diameters to accommodate various handlebar sizes. It's important to ensure that the grips you choose are compatible with your handlebars.

Mountain bike grips are crucial for control, comfort, and safety while riding on challenging terrain. Riders often have personal preferences for grip materials, designs, and lengths, so it's essential to choose grips that suit your riding style and hand size. Properly chosen grips can enhance your riding experience and reduce hand fatigue during long rides in rugged outdoor conditions.

User questions & answers

Question: would these work with bar-end shifters
Answer: Yes, I believe so because I have regular aluminum bar and Preston and I’m sure that the shifters probably mount the same way
Question: No matter how much i tighten it, the grip still rotates easily like a motorcycle throttle. if i apply any more force, i'll strip the screw for sure
Answer: I’ve used these grips on many bike restorations. Occasionally I have noticed them slipping a bit. I have always been able to solve the problem by tightening the screw. I’m guessing the bars you are using may be of slightly smaller diameter than usual. Try putting a single layer of electrical tape on the bar first. JB
Question: I am having a problem with the grips sliding down.. I have a beach cruiser. I have tightened the screws all the way
Answer: Sometimes there can be tolerance issues from one bar and one grip to the next. Even if you measured 'exactly' sometimes a grip will be slippery. Here's an old bike shop trick: Remove the grips and clean the bars with isopropyl alcohol. Clean any grease or oil out of the grips with a little dish soap and rinse. Let bars and grips dry a minute. Spray some aerosol hairspray inside the grip and be sure to wet the inside well. Slide the grip on (it should slide on super easy). Be sure it is straight (not twisted) and aligned exactly the way you want it. Let dry about 10-20 minutes. The hairspray will act almost as a glue. Test before riding. NOTE: It's easy to get off when disassembly is needed. Just force water under the grip, or some more isopropyl alcohol.
Question: Did anyone else have any issues with the end caps not fitting and just sliding out
Answer: I had the same problem. The solution I found was to slide the grips on the handlebars. Then I turned the bike on its side and used a hammer to pound the endcaps into the handlebar tube. That worked for me. The endcaps are in there snug now. Hope that helps!
