Just unscrew the cap and let it suck in the air, it takes probably 10 to 15 minutes to inflate, but you won't see anything dramatic happen right before your eyes. It's not an air mattress per say! It's an inflatable pad, but a lot better than a foam pad of comparable dimensions.

Answer:	I sleep on my side and I am a curvy woman. I'm 5'3 and 160. My arm and hand fell asleep. My hip dug into the ground. Answer:	I don't know a specific R value but i can say that this is thicker than most of the self inflating pads i have used and i would assume that it would be higher than most on that scale.
