12 best winter camping stove
Winter camping stoves are essential equipment for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy camping in cold and snowy conditions. These stoves are specifically designed to function efficiently in low temperatures and harsh winter environments. Here are some key features and information about winter camping stoves:
Fuel Types: Winter camping stoves can be categorized into two main types based on the fuel they use:
a. Liquid Fuel Stoves: These stoves run on liquid fuels such as white gas, kerosene, or even unleaded gasoline. They are versatile and can operate in extremely cold temperatures.Liquid fuel stoves are known for their reliability and ability to maintain a consistent flame even in sub-zero conditions.
b. Canister Stoves: Canister stoves use a blend of propane and isobutane stored in pressurized canisters. While they are convenient and easy to use, they may struggle in very cold conditions due to the lower vapor pressure of the fuel mix. However, some models have cold-weather performance features.
Cold-Weather Features: Winter camping stoves often have features to enhance their performance in cold weather:
a. Preheat Tubes: Liquid fuel stoves may have preheat tubes or priming cups that allow you to warm the fuel and generator before ignition, ensuring a reliable start.
b. Windshields: Many winter stoves come with integrated or detachable windshields to protect the flame from gusty winds, which can be particularly problematic in winter.
c. Heat Exchangers: Some stove models have heat exchanger fins on the bottom of the pot supports. These fins help capture and transfer heat more efficiently, reducing fuel consumption.
d. Insulated Fuel Lines: Insulated fuel lines prevent fuel from freezing in the line, ensuring a steady fuel supply to the stove.
Stove Types: Winter camping stoves come in various designs:
a. Single-Burner Stoves: These compact stoves are suitable for solo or small group camping and are lightweight and portable.
b. Multi-Burner Stoves: Larger groups may opt for multi-burner stoves that can accommodate multiple pots and pans simultaneously.
Cookware Compatibility: Winter camping stoves are often designed to work with specific cookware. Make sure your stove and cookware are compatible to ensure efficient cooking.
Safety: Safety is paramount when using any camping stove, especially in winter conditions. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, keep the stove stable, and use it in a well-ventilated area to prevent carbon monoxide buildup in enclosed spaces.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep your winter camping stove functioning properly. Clean it after each use, inspect hoses and seals, and store it in a dry place to prevent corrosion.
Remember that winter camping can be challenging, and having a reliable stove is crucial for staying warm, melting snow for water, and preparing hot meals. Choosing the right winter camping stove for your needs and being well-prepared for cold weather conditions will enhance your outdoor experience.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used indoor |
Answer: | I can't speak to smelly kids, but the gloves were okay. Did you happen to catch what they put their hands in before putting them on or back on? Were they active? If water can't get in, it follows that sweat can't get out, so there's a conundrum. Maybe just have them toss the gloves out the door once they come in. :) |
Question: | How much piping comes with the stove? Where can I buy more if there is not enough for my tent |
Answer: | Yes. It is a Boyâs jacket. I bought it for my 8yr old son. Great jacket |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used inside a tent |
Answer: | The insert is removable |
Question: | I live at 7,157 feet above sea level. Will this work up here |
Answer: | The inner lining is removable and can be washed separately (I have washed the lining in the washer and also used other insoles I like) but the outer shoe is washable with a hose or a soft scrub brush and you can use soap if you are so inclined. This is my 6th pair of sloggers/clogs and I don't know if I could garden without them! |
Question: | Will this take the 1lb green coleman tanks |
Answer: | My shoe size is 7.5, and I was given a pair of Sloggers, size 8. They were too big (long and wide), even with socks. Hopefully, one of the smaller sizes will work. |
Question: | size in inches |
Answer: | I have only seen them in Medium width (B); not sure they come in wide or narrow. (B) M is the standard shoe size, so a plain 8 should be the same as the standard size 8 (B) M |
Question: | Will this last all night |
Answer: | I absolutely love these outdoor shoes!!! The insoles are removable which means if you have another type of insole you'd like to replace them with, it's posible. The front of the shoes go up far enough to keep out water when watering, plus they're high enough in the back to keep water out when walking in the yard. They are super comfortable with plenty of toe room. They're lined so your feet don't sweat or feel like they're in a glove. |
Question: | Does it come with fuel |
Answer: | I wear mine with very thin socks and they were true to size. If you wear thicker socks you will want to size up. |
Question: | how much to replace fuel tank |
Answer: | Hmm, that's a good question? I did find the same info about returning your Sloggers to their recycling plant/factory located in Gardena, California, and this website for questionshttp://mailto:[email protected]/ Good luck! |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size is the flue pipe and can I get elbows for it |
Answer: | The description says 2 3/4" |
Question: | would i be able to use this lightly in a colemen 14x10 feet tent |
Answer: | No, yes you will have to burn off the cheap paint first before you ever use this on a camping trip. Then paint it with the high temperature paint for barbecue grills. You can get from Lowes or Home Depot. But back to the tent itself, the material itself is only fire resistant and could start to melt or catch fire especially if it has been sprayed with a water proofing spray. And I would guess this tent doesn't have a stove jack in the roof either. |
Question: | Alaska is part of the United states. Why when I try to order does it say no international shipping |
Answer: | Unless you are paying Air Mail, it's going over the Canadian Border, which is an international border. |
Question: | I cant ship to canada why is that |
Answer: | Princess Auto has the same stove for less roomies and ships to Canada |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which is better, nomad or this guy |
Answer: | Both are great stoves and very similar. Some people prefer the Nomad square body style with 4 legs, while others prefer the Woodlander 3-leg design with a rounded body. Can't go wrong either way. |
Question: | Will the medium stove heat a 12x12x8 bell tent |
Answer: | Yes, a Medium Woodlander should sufficiently heat a Bell tent of that size. |
Question: | Whatâs the difference between this and the Nomad |
Answer: | They are very similar with the main difference being the footprint. This is from the nomad product description â The Nomad Stove differs from the woodlander stoves due to its rectangle shaped firebox and nesting four-leg design. The four leg design gives the Nomad a slightly smaller footprint than the Woodlander stoves, making it a great option in recreational shelters such as tiny homes, vans, and bus conversions where space is limited and a fireproof hearth area is built to accommodate the stove.â |
Question: | How hot do the legs get? Could i stand it up sitting on a towel or wool blanket |
Answer: | The legs don't get that hot. However. you need to have protection on the ground to make any stray hot coals that may fall out when you are loading it with more wood don't burn through the bottom of your tent or start a fire on anything that may be burnable if you have a floorless tent. Winnerwell has a silicon mat that works great. I suggest something like that. |

Question: | Other cheaper stoves on amazon i've purchased seem really thin. i've even cut myself putting them together. how thick is the kampmate |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. As long as your butane/propane fuel canister has a threaded valve certified to EN417 standard, you can use it with the Crux and Crux Lite stoves. |
Question: | Can anyone recommend a lightweight cooking pot set that works well with the kampmate stove |
Answer: | It does include the pouch to store the stove under a fuel cannister. |
Question: | How does the kampmate stove compare to the folding fire box or emberlit stove |
Answer: | The information that this windshield will not work with the Crux and Crux Lite Solo is INCORRECT. In the Optimus instruction sheet that comes with the Windshield it says that this is recommended specifically for the Crux and Crux Lite backpacking stoves. Quote, from the Optimus instruction leaflet, "We recommend to use this windshield only with the Optimus Crux and Crux Lite gas stoves and Optimus gas canisters." The windshield clips to the crimped ring for the threaded gas outlet on the top of the gas canister. Whatever size this ring is on the Optimus gas canister, it is the same size on the JetBoil 100 gram gas canister, too (and probably this is the same size used on several different brand gas canisters). |
Question: | How does the kampmate blueflame stove compare in size to the emberlit stove |
Answer: | The Optimus Windshield will work with the Primus Express. It will clip onto the base of the canister, and there will be enough space at the diameter for exchange. Do not go over a 1-liter pot or anything more than 6" in diameter at the pot base. |

Camping 1990 with Original WoodFlame Stove
This is me when I was 7 years old camping with my dad and older brother at Granddaddy Lake in the High Uinta Mountains in Utah. Boiling water and cooking fish at the same time. Pictures circa 1990.
Cooking with original WoodFlame Stove
This is our Dad, the inventor of the original WoodFlame Stove. This was camping next to Mohawk Lake in the High Uinta Mountains in Utah. Countless meals were cooked on these stoves while hiking all over the Uintas. Picture Circa 1990.
Original WoodFlame Stove
We only have a handful of these original WoodFlame Stoves left. Back when our dad originally invented this stove he had about 5 different sizes of it made. This one is the closes in size to the WoodFlame stove that we have today.
Original WoodFlame Stove alongside the New kampMATE WoodFlame Stove
Keeping with the same basic principles of the original WoodFlame Stove we've improved the ease of assembly, re-enforced the side plates with some embossing, created larger air ventilation on the sides and bottom tray and added some cross bars to the top to accommodate smaller cups and pots.
Still foldable but now even thinner
One of the best parts of the stove was that it folded flat. We've improved on that design and made it even thinner. You couldn't tell it was in your pack before and now you will need to double check to make sure you have it in there with it being so thin! Each stove comes with its own nylon carry case as well to keep if safely in one place and to keep your other gear from getting dirty after each use. We do recommend wiping each plate off in the dirt of grass prior to putting back into the nylon case. It's amazing what a little dirt will do to clean the stove after each use.
High Uinta Mountains 1990
Can't even remember how many backpacking trips I've taken this stove on. I was 7 years old in this picture and I distinctively remember complaining about how heavy my backpack was. It certainly wasn't because of my WoodFlame Stove!
Still backpacking and camping after 30 years
We are still avid backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts after 30 years. Although our father is no longer here with us to go and enjoy the outdoors he truly instilled in us a lifetime love for the outdoors. We may never be as good of fisherman as he was but we are happy to carry on the legacy that he started. We hold you too will enjoy his invention of the WoodFlame Stove.

User questions & answers
Question: | How necessary is the pot support for this system? That is, how ready to use is this kit providing you already have fuel |
Answer: | Looking at the product images and watching the video you'll notice the male appears to remove the lid quite easily with one hand and the assumably empty pot isn't disrupted. This would lead me to believe there is a slip flange on the lid that slides inside the mouth of the pot much like your pots at home and slips fairly easily. I hate answering questions without having purchased a product but after 4 weeks and only one weak answer I thought observation and analytical thinking might be better than nothing. Fwiw I too am in search of another pot and scrolling the questions I saw yours. I hope this helps out somehow. |
Question: | Can one cook food in this?? Could I make rice in this?? Which model is best |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Would this be large enough to cook a block of ramen in |
Answer: | Both sets include the same items: 2 pots, a frying pan, 2 strainer lids, a cutting board, a pot handle, and a waterproof stuff sack. The difference is in the size of the cookware. The large set includes 3 and 5 liter pots and a 9" frying pan. The small set includes 1.5 and 2 liter pots and an 8" frying pan. |
Question: | What is the difference between Jetboil Zip Cooking System and Jetboil Personal Cooking System |
Answer: | No. You canât expose them to flames but you can put them on the pots when you cook. They are lids so that is their purpose. |

A tried-and-true classic, the Zip was born from Jetboil's original PCS design and offers a reliable, no-frills option for backpackers. Lightweight and compact, this stove focuses on the backcountry boiling essentials. No more and no less.
In 2001, Dwight Aspinwall and Perry Dowst revolutionized backcountry cooking by creating a fast, compact and efficient stove unlike anything the world had ever seenâthe first-ever Jetboil. And our engineers have been following in their footsteps ever since, relentlessly pushing the limits of whatâs possible by inventing technologies that continue to redefine the industry.

Jetboil builds super-dependable stoves and systems that pack light, set up quick, and achieve rapid boils in minutes.
Compact
Quick to set-up. Quick to pack-up. No loose parts. Jetboil cooking systems save pack space and make storage and transportation a breeze.
