8 best small propane stove for camping
A small propane stove for camping is a portable cooking device designed for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy camping, hiking, picnicking, and other outdoor activities. These stoves are compact, lightweight, and convenient for preparing meals in the wilderness. Here's what you need to know about them:
Portability: Small propane camping stoves are designed with portability in mind. They are typically lightweight and compact, making them easy to carry in a backpack or camping gear.
Fuel Source: These stoves are powered by propane gas canisters, which are readily available at outdoor and camping supply stores. Propane is a clean-burning and efficient fuel source for cooking in outdoor settings.
Cooking Power: Despite their small size, many propane camping stoves offer significant cooking power. They can quickly boil water, cook meals, and even handle larger pots and pans for more extensive cooking needs.
Burner Types: Propane camping stoves come in various configurations. Some have a single burner, while others have multiple burners, allowing you to cook multiple dishes simultaneously. The choice depends on your cooking requirements and the number of people you're camping with.
Ignition: Some models feature built-in ignition systems, eliminating the need for matches or lighters. Others may require manual ignition using a separate tool.
Regulation and Control: Most propane stoves allow you to control the flame's intensity, enabling precise temperature adjustments for cooking different types of food. This control is especially useful when simmering or cooking delicate dishes.
Stability: Camping stoves are designed to be stable on uneven outdoor surfaces. They often come with sturdy legs or supports to ensure safe cooking, even on rocky terrain.
Wind Protection: Many models include windshields or windbreaks to shield the flame from the wind. This feature improves fuel efficiency and maintains consistent cooking temperatures in windy conditions.
Cookware Compatibility: Propane camping stoves are compatible with various cookware types, including pots, pans, and griddles. Make sure your cookware is suitable for outdoor use and fits the stove's burner size.
Safety Features: Most propane stoves have safety features like an automatic shut-off in case of overheating or if the stove is accidentally tipped over. Always follow safety guidelines when using these stoves.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the burners and checking fuel lines for leaks, is crucial to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Regulations: Be aware of any camping regulations or fire restrictions in the area where you plan to camp. Some areas may have specific rules regarding the use of open flames, including camping stoves.
In summary, a small propane stove for camping is a convenient and efficient way to cook meals while enjoying outdoor adventures. These stoves offer portability, versatility, and reliable cooking power, making them an essential piece of camping equipment for many outdoor enthusiasts.

User questions & answers
Question: | can this burner be used indoors |
Answer: | I set it on top of my electric range and use it for cooking with a wok. I like gas better for the wok. Works fine, although my house is pretty drafty so I don't have to worry much about ventilation. Downside? Don't leave it setting on the electric stove and turn the electric burner on. Might do a little damage when the gas explodes! |
Question: | My reason for considering this purchase is if the stove has a low setting, low enough so oatmeal doesn't burn. Some reviewers said yes AND no |
Answer: | I cook oatmeal on this burner every morning with no additional hardware. turn it very low- as low as possible. if your pot is small, do not cover. if the pot is deep, use a cover. you can pretty much tell if it boils over that the heat is too hi and or the pot is too shallow. |
Question: | is the unit stable, get hot enough for a wok pan? flat bottomed wok |
Answer: | Yes! Very stable that's why I got mine, and is great for larger pans/pots. I'm not sure about hot enough for wok but it should as I have cooked large pots of stew. For me it's a great one burner stove. |
Question: | Does this product includes the connection to the propane tank or do I have to buy a separate hose |
Answer: | The Coleman 5453A series Propane Stove is supplied complete with the following: 5453-2351 = Grate. R430-565T = Regulator assembly. 5453-3351 = Foot Assy. 5453-1351 = Knob. Note: The Regulator Assembly is the connection to the 16.5 Coleman Propane Fuel tank. A hose would be an addition of your choice if you wanted the propane to be farther away from the stove itself. |

About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark. In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions of cooking surface when stove is open for cooking grill |
Answer: | about 20'' x 10'' |
Question: | Which carry case fits this stove |
Answer: | Coleman Part# 2000004431. That case will fit the stove AND can hold Two propane bottles. It's a nice case, keeps your stove looking like new plus carrying the bottles. |
Question: | What type of connector do I need for this Coleman Stove? I see many types but do not know which one to buy |
Answer: | it comes with the connector. you don't need to worry about that as long as you buy the small, green, one-use propane canisters. |
Question: | Can an adapter and propane tank be used with this burner |
Answer: | I'm not 100% sure but I think it should, provided the adapter is for this kind of Coleman propane stove. Personally, I use a refill adapter to refill my One-LB propane bottles from the 20-LB BBQ propane tank. I like the ease of the 1-LB bottles. The 20-LB tanks are too bulky for camping trips. User questions & answers
Question: | Can I remove the gas cylinder before it is empty for storage |
Answer: | Absolutely, you wouldn't want to store the gas cylinder attached to burner for an extended period of time. |
Question: | How much does it weigh |
Answer: | On my kitchen scale the full gas canister weighs 30.12 oz. and the stove components weigh 24.76 oz. When weighed together as a unit I got 54.86 oz. = 3.43 pounds. |
Question: | How long does it normally last for one full propane tank? Say, if I cook for about 20 minutes every time, how many times can a propane tank be used |
Answer: | Usually a tank will last 8 hrs if you leave it at medium heat to low. Depending in the space required to heat. So if you the calculations. 20 min X 3 = 60 min 3X8=24. So about 24 times give or take a few. |
Question: | Is it sturdy enough to set a cast iron skillet ontop of and cook food without worrying about damaging the burner setup |
Answer: | Hello. I take this stove camping and canoeing all the time. I use a large, heavy, cast iron skillet with a 11" base, 12" top, 2.25" sides to do my cooking. However, to maintain a hotter oil temperature for frying fish you must cover the cast iron skillet with a lid otherwise the oil will not get hot enough to boil. I purchased a commercial aluminum lid for a stock pot to use. NOW, LISTEN CAREFULLY, the factory propane cylinder PLASTIC BASE WILL NOT WORK and IS DANGEROUS TO USE with this setup. The cast iron skillet I use is much to heavy for safe use and with boiling oil you are heading for disaster. Here is the SOLUTION for a larger, very sturdy base. Get a new or used 12" non-stick fry pan. Take the handle off (grind, bend, or unscrew). File any sharp edges. Drill a 3/8" hole in the center of the pan. Get (1) 3/8" x 1 1/2" or 2" long bolt (depending how deep the non-stick fry pan is), lock nut, 2 washers. Get about 6" of 4" diameter PVC plastic pipe. Get a 4" PVC plastic pipe end cap with a flat bottom. Press, or glue, the PVC end cap onto the 6" long PVC pipe. Drill a 3/8" hole through center. Now assemble stand: non-stick fry pan cooking side faces away or to ground. PVC pipe is now all 1 piece and rests on top of flat surface of fry pan. 3/8" bolt with washer goes inside pipe, through fry pan and is bolted with washer and lock nut making the entire unit 1 piece. DO NOT tighten the 3/8" bolt so tight that it splits the plastic PVC, just snug. The 3/8" bolt should not extend past the lip of the fry pan or it will not sit level. The 1 pound cylinder will fit inside with single burner stove attached. You have just made a much safer base for your Coleman single burner stove. "WARNING" You must still exercise EXTREME CAUTION and CAREFULNESS when cooking with this setup and especially when using HOT OIL (wear oven mitts when removing HOT skillet). You can vary the diameter of the base fry pan for sturdiness, or the PVC pipe height. The cooking surface has now been raised but as long as the ground is solid and flat, or the table sturdy enough, I have not had an issue with tipping. There is a small space between the PVC pipe and the 1 pound cylinder. You can wedge a small twigs in, or plastic, whatever works to tighten the cylinder so it does not shift around or turn while cooking. I pack the PVC and base as 1 piece but you can unbolt them if you have to make 2 smaller items. Best Regards, and Enjoy Cooking With Your Coleman. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If I use the butane container and need to change to propane (due to freezing temperatures or altitude) is it safe to unscrew the propane and switch |
Answer: | Yes, Just be quick about it !! |
Question: | How big is the burner size? Can i use a 12" pan? Thanks |
Answer: | Measuring diagonally on just the grill part it's 11" and yes a 12" pan would work I have a 13" pot that I use to cook crab outside and it works perfect |
Question: | can this be used indoors |
Answer: | I have used it indoors twice and it works fine... no problems at all. Make sure to be as safe indoors as you are outdoors. |
Question: | Will this accept the weight a 20Qt stainless steel pot of water. Any thoughts on using it for a canning bath |
Answer: | I would not use anything big enough to cover the butane cover section as if that butane canister being thinner metal gets to hot it becomes a ticking time bomb. If I remember right I'm thinking they don't recommend anything over 10-11" in diameter in pots to keep from reflecting heat back down over butane cover. If using the 1 lb propane bottles probably not an issue. You could also wrap the rubber hose with some reflective aluminum foil that goes into stove. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with a propane adaptor? If not, what should I get? I am new to propane stoves |
Answer: | Yes, it's made to fit the small green bottles but can be adapted to be used on a 5 gallon. You will need to buy an adaptor hose to fit the stove & screw on to the 5gal bottle. That set up is great for extended camping time. |
Question: | The images show two different clasps. Does this model come with the wide or narrow one |
Answer: | We just bought this model on Amazon about 3 weeks ago. It has the larger clasp and seemed to work well. Went camping and the ignition/lighter switch was a huge help. Used it for 2 days straight and barely went through 1 small propane tank. Good luck! |
Question: | Do you have to use Colleman propane canisters |
Answer: | Any 1-pound propane canister will work, as well as hooking up a bulk propane tank via appropriate hoses. Triton is the best camp stove I've ever used. Highly recommended! |
Question: | There are 2 different clasps pictured - is the wider clasp made of metal or plastic |
Answer: | The entire stove is metal except for the nobs and the easy start button. The black clasp to lock is metal as well as all the hinges. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can someone tell me where this is made?? trying not to buy anything from china. thanks |
Answer: | Some people who answered this question need to be little more realistic and objective. Very big portion of current Chinese manufacturing was handed to them by US corporations out of greed. Top %1 who manages WallStreet also places huge pressure on US corporations to be much more profitable (greedy). End result, fire US worker, take manufacturing to China and pay much less. So "they stole from us" is not quite correct. |
Question: | Does this come with the hose for 16.4 oz propane tank hook up |
Answer: | Yes the hose to connect the stove to a 1 lb propane bottle comes with the stove. |
Question: | Can this be used in the house during a blackout type situation |
Answer: | YES YOU CAN...BUT....EVERYTHING used involving FIRE releases some type of Co2 emissionsyou need to take a few precautions such as using it in a vented area opening windows and having ceiling or portable fans. If you have a hood fan above your electric/gas oven and it vents smoke and fumes outside or to the attic you should definitely place this burner on top of your oven, if it doesn't vent to the outside or attic you'll just be recirculation back inside. Also you NEVER want to leave it unintended and once you're done cooking turn it off. It wouldn't hurt to get a Co2 monitor and place it around 10-12 feet away from your cooking area, having it that distance will keep it from going off unnecessarily yet still let you know if the Co2 levels get high. And above all use some common sense you are cooking over a open flame!!! |
Question: | On high, how long will a 16.4oz propane cylinder last? How long will a butane canister last |
Answer: | I actually tested this out to see how long each fuel would last. The 8oz.Butane lasts just a little over 2 full hours on high heat. The 16oz. Propane lasts just over 4 hours on high heat. However, where I live (Boise,Idaho) the elevation is about 2,800 above sea level so that is a factor to take into consideration....different elevations, slightly different results. Also, not every can is going to give you the same results. On average,I'd be comfortable to say that the above times are pretty consistent + or - 10 minutes either way. |
