14 best butane stoves
Butane stoves are portable cooking devices commonly used for outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, picnics, and other outdoor recreational activities. These stoves are designed to be compact, lightweight, and easy to use, making them a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts. Here's what you need to know about butane stoves:
Fuel Source:
- Butane stoves are powered by butane gas canisters, which are readily available at camping supply stores and outdoor retailers. These canisters are designed to be easily attached and detached from the stove.
Portability:
- One of the key advantages of butane stoves is their portability. They are typically small and lightweight, making them easy to carry in a backpack or camping gear.
Ease of Use:
- Butane stoves are known for their simplicity and ease of use. Most models have a built-in ignition system, eliminating the need for matches or lighters.
- They often feature adjustable heat controls, allowing users to regulate cooking temperatures.
Cooking Versatility:
- Butane stoves can accommodate various cookware, including pots, pans, and griddles.
- They are suitable for a range of cooking methods, from boiling water for beverages and dehydrated meals to frying, sautéing, and simmering.
Safety Features:
- Modern butane stoves come equipped with safety features such as automatic shut-off mechanisms in case of gas leakage or overheating.
- Some models also have windshields to protect the flame from gusty winds.
Duration of Use:
- The duration a butane stove can operate depends on the size of the butane canister and the heat setting. Smaller canisters may last for a few hours, while larger ones can provide days of cooking.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Butane stoves are relatively easy to clean. They often have removable drip trays and burner caps for easy maintenance.
- Regular maintenance includes checking for gas leaks and ensuring that all components are in good working condition.
Cooking Environment:
- Butane stoves are designed for outdoor use and should not be used indoors, as they produce carbon monoxide and other combustion byproducts.
- They are ideal for camping, picnicking, and outdoor gatherings.
Types of Butane Stoves:
- There are various types of butane stoves available, including single-burner and multiple-burner models.
- Some stoves are specifically designed for backpacking and have an ultra-compact design, while others are suitable for more extensive cooking tasks at campgrounds.
Regulations and Safety:
- Users should be aware of local regulations regarding the use of butane stoves in natural areas and campgrounds. Many places have specific rules for open flames and stoves.
In summary, butane stoves are versatile and convenient cooking devices for outdoor enthusiasts. They offer a reliable source of heat for preparing meals during camping trips and other outdoor adventures. However, users should follow safety guidelines and be mindful of the environment when using butane stoves in outdoor settings.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this stove approved for indoor use |
Answer: | These stoves are typically used by Asians for indoor cooking at the dinning room table for say hot pot, shabu shabu, sukiyaki etc. |
Question: | Bit confused here, some say this comes with a storage case others say it does not. Can anyone tell me yes or no? Thank you in advance |
Answer: | I bought mine here and, yes, it did come with a storage case. The case is plastic and is handy. I don't know why Amazon does not state this in the product description but I do know they do a lot of "cut and paste" when listing products and sometimes the product source varies. In the side pictures, notice the one with the stove and the apparent box it comes in. There is a handle shown in the box view. That is the handle of the plastic carry case inside the box, so if it does not come with a carry case, you can send it back at no cost if you want to. I believe you will get a case and I know you will love this stove. I use mine for when the power goes out. Some Walmarts carry the gas cannisters and some do not. |
Question: | whats the largest diameter pan you can safely use on this without the butane cartridge getting hot and exploding? also is there a manual online anywhere |
Answer: | It's not a question of the butane cartridge getting hot. It's below and to the side of the flame. The pot support has a lip that limits the pot size to 10-3/4 inches or 27.5cm. Any pot larger than that will not be supported in a stable fashion and would be in danger of slipping and slopping out hot contents. |
Question: | How long does the butane cylinder last |
Answer: | Don't know for sure, I fried up a batch of potatoes and onions (twice) as well as some walleye fillets and chicken wings (sever batches) and there seems to be plenty of fuel left in the cannister. Bottom line..... one fuel can will go a long way. I plan to take two with me for a week of shore lunches in Canada in June and that should be more than enough. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used in cold waether |
Answer: | Depends on how cold. Butane doesn't work well below 35-40F. If you need a stove for consistent temps around freezing or below, go with a propane model. |
Question: | Can you use a cast iron skillet on this stove |
Answer: | Absolutely. Any pot or pan works fine. Actually, a cast iron skillet would work great. The stove can put out quite a bit of heat, I've used these for a stock pot. |
Question: | How do you put the butane in the stove |
Answer: | The butane fuel can only be loaded in its can. Open the fuel canister compartment cover. Remove the cap on the fuel canister. Insert the canister with the collar notch facing upward. The valve on the canister goes into a small funnel shaped fitting. There is a spring loaded latch that fits into the collar notch. Close the compartment and activate the fuel canister lock lever on the front of the stove. The stove is now ready to use. |

User questions & answers
Question: | do you need to buy a connecting hose as well |
Answer: | No It's not needed and no connection. Just one 8 ounce can other brand or 8.8 ounce of coleman butane and you're good to go. |
Question: | What can I place under the burner to use on my dining table |
Answer: | Camping I do not use anything and none of my plastic table tops have had any injury do to heat. Nor has the metal or wood picnic tables at campsties. I bought the flameless version last fall after seeing one at a caving convention in July last year in MT. It will allow me to have a fameless version to cook when our wild fire season in MT is demanding no flame cooking. They often allow the flameless version which by the way is not flameless just has a kind of closed cover on top like an electric burner making it appear flameless. Under the burner is a flame unlike this version and which has an open burner much like a gas range burners have. Makes all the difference when camping during wildfire season however. BY THE WAY if you buy one that does not have a wind shield make one or buy one they make all the difference in the world for fuel effeciency as well as heating up your pot. I bought my stove over 10 years ago with no wind shield and made one about 8 years ago from aluminum sheeting sold on Amazon. I cut it into tall pieces that fold up and hinged them together with metal wire coil binders and yes used the paper punch that uses those wire binders to make the holes. It worked great. And it folds up and fits right on top of stove tucked inside the plastic case that came with that stove. Bottom line most of these stoves are pretty much equal with some slight differences. Overall great. At home I find using a silicone sink mat even though it has ridges to dry dishes or use as a hot plate works extremely well to keep it from sliding. These also sold on Amazon are rated over 500 degrees and food safe silicone. Come in variety of colors but I prefer frosted or clear. I have not used the mats camping. A Silicone baking sheet my not insulate as much as you are concerned with. But like I said have never had so much heat to harm any surface including the plastic folding tables I often use when camping if there is no picnic table available. Hope these suggestions help others. |
Question: | How long will a can of butane last with this stove |
Answer: | I have not used this stove yet, but I thought I saw a canister can last up to an hour and a half or two hours depending on how high you have it. |
Question: | Can it be used inside |
Answer: | This is our second one, we use them for camping, backyard cooking, power outages, emergency kit/ travel kitchen, for many Asian table cooked foods like hotpots, shabu shabu, stir fries... I enjoy cooking on it, it sits on the glass top stove with a vent above, windows 6' and 15' away on either side, and a comfortable cooking height. The fuel cans last longer if you do not open it 100% to cook, we find open about 75-85% works fine. In about 8 years we've never had a problem, nor during indoor cooking, has the co2 monoxide detector gone off. If you use it inside, make sure you have good cross ventilation, and a working carbon monoxide detector nearby. This uses oxygen, and can be dangerous if you don't have windows sort of across from each other, open slightly (we have them open about 1 to 1.5" in winter or rain, wider in summer, and if there's no wind, we have a fan, electric or battery) blowing out the closer window. Excessive? Not if you were almost killed by co2 poisoning when the furnace repairman didn't put it back together right and we had all the co2 coming into the house. Now our all electric house has a battery co2 detector. Hope this helps for uses & sadety... |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used indoors |
Answer: | Yes. It is. I also used at home. |
Question: | The flame/btu is so low compared to other butane burners. Is there enough heat to grill a burger or small steak |
Answer: | First, making sure you not in a high wind situation. The flame is almost invisible but gives out high heat. It burns my toast instantly with white smokes. I grilled squid and sausages. (If you cook steaks, I won't recommend it) Instead, heat up your cast iron pan at your kitchen stove till white smoke coming out, carefully bring it out onto a burner that is designed for shabu shabu or hotpot. Put butter and do your thing) This cute burner more for grilling small items likes skewers. |
Question: | Where is this item made |
Answer: | Seoul Korea Not China |
Question: | will i get the stove ( 2 ) in one order ? right ? will it comes with the gas bottle ready for use or i have to buy the gas bottle separate |
Answer: | You'll only get one stove, and it doesn't come with a butane canister. You have to buy the the canister separately. |

About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark. In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions of cooking surface when stove is open for cooking grill |
Answer: | about 20'' x 10'' |
Question: | Which carry case fits this stove |
Answer: | Coleman Part# 2000004431. That case will fit the stove AND can hold Two propane bottles. It's a nice case, keeps your stove looking like new plus carrying the bottles. |
Question: | What type of connector do I need for this Coleman Stove? I see many types but do not know which one to buy |
Answer: | it comes with the connector. you don't need to worry about that as long as you buy the small, green, one-use propane canisters. |
Question: | Can an adapter and propane tank be used with this burner |
Answer: | I'm not 100% sure but I think it should, provided the adapter is for this kind of Coleman propane stove. Personally, I use a refill adapter to refill my One-LB propane bottles from the 20-LB BBQ propane tank. I like the ease of the 1-LB bottles. The 20-LB tanks are too bulky for camping trips. Cheerios. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used indoors |
Answer: | Only with very good ventilation. I used one indoors at a cooking class, but it was a big room with high ceilings. I would not use it indoors at my house, as the rooms are smaller and have low ceilings. |
Question: | Can I use a 13" sautee pan on this stove, or do I have to just use small pans |
Answer: | I use a 12" Revere Ware saute pan on mine all the time. I imagine the 13" would be fine. |
Question: | Can it get a pan up to 375 degrees F |
Answer: | I assume that you intend to do burner top baking. The answer is "not likely" but you can still bake, use a heavy pa to more evenly distribute the heat (a 8 inch cast iron is great) or a ceramic or iron dutch oven. The dutch will hit 350. Extend your baking time by 25% but check whats happening on the bottom of the food item frequently...if charring, cut back the heat and extend the time. I do biscuits and soda bread in a cast iron pan but I have a cast iron lid also. |
Question: | In one canister, how many breakfasts can I make (say hard boiled eggs & bacon |
Answer: | Hi! You can probably cook 5-10 breakfasts. One 8oz canister lasts 2-8 hours depending on the flame (low-medium-high). Using a high flame, it is probably 2 hours, and a low flame up to 8 hours. When I tested the flame, it was like a regular gas stove flame. I have not cooked anything on the stove yet. If you cook inside, make sure you have adequate ventilation because the stove is NOT intended for inside use. Check out the description of Gasone Butane Cannisters. Hope this response helps. |

Question: | How much can you cook with one can |
Answer: | Also, my Hubby and I seem to do fine on one can going out for 3 night. That's coffee and breakfast every morning and dinner at night. Cooking in 45-70 degree weather at 7500-8000feet. When tent camping with the Xterra, I use an old 8 cup aluminum perculator that takes 8-10 minutes to be done. Bacon/sausage and egg scramble takes another 8-10 minutes, and dinner steak with veggies takes about 20 minutes on really low with foil on top....a can of chili would take a out 2-3 minutes, Mac n cheese is like coffee...8-10 minutes. I'm getting a good 90 minutes on a can being conscious of that precious resource and cooking out of the wind and screened on 2 sides; using foil or lid over meal to facilitate cooking, and usually sticking to around medium flame, unless it's coffee. The last 3 night trip this past week, still has fuel from 3 weeks ago and lasted us another chili dinner, coffee and breakfast and still has maybe 1/6th if the can...that last inch. I'm confident I could get another breakfast with coffee or maybe spaghetti dinner before it was out |

Answer: | Says 1 year on their website. More info there. |
Question: | can this boil three gallons of water? I would use this for home brewing, & i need it to keep 3 gallons of water boiling for 45 minutes |
Answer: | I home brew as well, this is under sized for that your boil at 15,000BTU. Gasone sells a 200,000 BTU burner that is made for boiling oil to deep fry a turkey. That will be better suited to your needs. https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Propane-Adjustable-0-20PSI-Regulator/dp/B071ZM8YVC |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this stove big enough to hold a donabe |
Answer: | Yes. It easily holds a donabe large enough for 4-6 people. It could potentially hold more, but I have not tested it at that size yet. It puts out head adequate to pretty quickly bring the liquid to a boil and holds a simmer well. Make sure to start with the flame fairly low as I cracked a clay pot on the first use by starting at the highest setting. The pot cracked even though it was full of liquid prior to going on the heat. |
Question: | Where is the country of origin |
Answer: | This one is made in Japan and the quality is awesome!! |
Question: | at almost 4 times the cost of those $20 butane stoves, is this Iwatani stove safer than those cheap stoves |
Answer: | This Iwatani stove is the best of all portable butane stove. I cook very fast and it will use all the butane gas not like other butane stove. The butane is on the top of the heat metal plate. It definitely help to get the max out of the butane gas inside container. I have at least 2 x 12000 BTU and 4 x 15000 BTU portable butane stove at home. You never regret to buy this stove at all. |
Question: | Do the GasOne Butane cans work with the Iwatani stove? The Iwatani fuel is much more expensive. Is the GasOne as safe and does it work well |
Answer: | Gas One canisters work just as well, but they're not as safe. Iwatani cans have CRV (explosion-proof) construction, but Gas One do not. However, are many inexpensive brands that do have CRV. I recently paid $5 (on sale) for a 4-pack of CRV cans at the local asian market (they're usually $6). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can someone tell me where this is made?? trying not to buy anything from china. thanks |
Answer: | Some people who answered this question need to be little more realistic and objective. Very big portion of current Chinese manufacturing was handed to them by US corporations out of greed. Top %1 who manages WallStreet also places huge pressure on US corporations to be much more profitable (greedy). End result, fire US worker, take manufacturing to China and pay much less. So "they stole from us" is not quite correct. |
Question: | Does this come with the hose for 16.4 oz propane tank hook up |
Answer: | Yes the hose to connect the stove to a 1 lb propane bottle comes with the stove. |
Question: | Can this be used in the house during a blackout type situation |
Answer: | YES YOU CAN...BUT....EVERYTHING used involving FIRE releases some type of Co2 emissionsyou need to take a few precautions such as using it in a vented area opening windows and having ceiling or portable fans. If you have a hood fan above your electric/gas oven and it vents smoke and fumes outside or to the attic you should definitely place this burner on top of your oven, if it doesn't vent to the outside or attic you'll just be recirculation back inside. Also you NEVER want to leave it unintended and once you're done cooking turn it off. It wouldn't hurt to get a Co2 monitor and place it around 10-12 feet away from your cooking area, having it that distance will keep it from going off unnecessarily yet still let you know if the Co2 levels get high. And above all use some common sense you are cooking over a open flame!!! |
Question: | On high, how long will a 16.4oz propane cylinder last? How long will a butane canister last |
Answer: | I actually tested this out to see how long each fuel would last. The 8oz.Butane lasts just a little over 2 full hours on high heat. The 16oz. Propane lasts just over 4 hours on high heat. However, where I live (Boise,Idaho) the elevation is about 2,800 above sea level so that is a factor to take into consideration....different elevations, slightly different results. Also, not every can is going to give you the same results. On average,I'd be comfortable to say that the above times are pretty consistent + or - 10 minutes either way. |

User questions & answers
Question: | where is this stove made? how long does 1 butane canister last, for example, typical 3 day camping trip, cooking 3 meals a day? durable |
Answer: | I would think china. We use it for cooking outside and a canister of butane lasts a long time. But, that's just me and we're typically cooking one dish and not a dinner. You may use more. It's cheap and often sold in 3 and 4pks. If you're cooking for 4 people 3 x day =12 meals, I would guess two might be as much as you'd need. But I suggest you buy a 4 pack and see how much you use. If you're feeling scientific you could make an approximation by weighting the canister, cooking a typical meal and weighing the canister again and seeing how much you used. |
Question: | Appoximately how many hours of cooking can i get with 1 fuel can using it on the gas one gs-3000 portable gas stove? at approx. a med-high setting |
Answer: | We took this bad boy camping for 2 weeks and went through 1 1/2 cans of fuel (cooking nearly every night). I would stock up on cans however, as some states dont have these readily available. This stove is great! Love the sturdy carry case too! |
Question: | Can this equipment be used indoors, or is it for outside use only |
Answer: | The stove says on it "NOT FOR HOUSEHOLD USE", and the instruction manual contains 4 different warnings about using it inside (reproduced below). When butane burns it normally produces harmless carbon dioxide; however, if there isn't sufficient oxygen available (such as when in an poorly ventilated space) then it will form toxic carbon monoxide instead. If you do decide to ignore the warnings and use it indoors, then make sure that the room is well-ventilated, and make sure that you have a carbon monoxide detector. ---- The cover of the manual has 2 relevant warnings on it: FOR OUTDOOR USE AS A CAMPSTOVE. NOT FOR HOUSEHOLD USE. ANS Z21.72·CSA 11.2-2011 Camp Stove WARNING: CARBON MONOXIDE HAZARD This appliance can produce carbon monoxide which has no odor. Using it in an enclosed space can kill you. Never use this appliance in an enclosed space such as a camper, tent, car or home. The interior of the manual has a "DANGER" section that is mostly about explosions and fire hazards, but contains these 2 warnings about using it indoors: WARNING: Provide ample ventilation when using this appliance. This appliance consumes oxygen. To avoid endangering your life, do not use this appliance in unventilated structures. Provide additional ventilation for any additional burning products or additional occupants. This appliance is for outdoor use as a camp stove or indoor use in commercial restaurants or both. It is not for household use. It should never be used in an unventilated structure such as a tent, camper, vehicle or any other enclosed area as the use of oxygen or the bulid [sic] up of carbon monoxide could endanger your life. |
