12 best barrel stove kits
Barrel stove kits are a popular and versatile option for heating and cooking in outdoor settings, particularly for camping, hiking, and other outdoor recreational activities. These kits typically consist of essential components that allow you to convert an empty metal barrel or drum into a functional stove. Here's what you need to know about barrel stove kits:
Components: Barrel stove kits usually include items like a cast iron stove door, stove pipe, damper, legs, and a flue collar. Some kits may also include a grate for cooking or heating purposes.
Construction: To assemble a barrel stove, you'll need to cut holes in the barrel for the door and the stove pipe, attach the legs for stability, and secure the various components in place.It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Heating: Barrel stoves are known for their efficiency in providing warmth in outdoor settings. They can burn a variety of fuels, including wood, charcoal, and even propane with the right attachments. These stoves are commonly used in hunting cabins, ice fishing shanties, and other remote locations.
Cooking: Many barrel stove kits are designed with cooking in mind. They offer a flat surface on top of the barrel where you can place cookware or a grill grate. This versatility makes them suitable for preparing meals while camping or during power outages.
Portability: Barrel stoves can be relatively portable, especially when disassembled and stored. This makes them convenient for campers and outdoor enthusiasts who need a heating and cooking solution that can be transported easily.
Safety: It's crucial to operate barrel stoves safely, ensuring that there is proper ventilation and a safe distance from flammable materials. Using them indoors or in enclosed spaces can be hazardous without the right precautions.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the stovepipe and checking for any leaks or damage, is essential to keep a barrel stove operating safely and efficiently.
DIY Option: Some people choose to create their barrel stoves from scratch using available materials, but barrel stove kits provide a convenient and reliable option, especially for those who may not have the tools or expertise to construct one themselves.
In summary, barrel stove kits offer a practical solution for heating and cooking in outdoor environments. They are versatile, portable, and can be an excellent addition to your camping or outdoor recreation gear. However, it's crucial to operate them safely and follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure a trouble-free experience.

Question: | Does this kit come with a damper for the stove pipe |
Answer: | I am a staffer at EO Products. We have not tested the product for this purpose and do not claim that will work to repel insects, however, the lavender essential oil MAY help. It would be worth a try. Or, try this recipe for a DIY bug spray: 2oz Witch Hazel, 2oz Distilled Water, 15 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil, 10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil, 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil, 1/2 teaspoon Vegetable Glycerin (optional to moisturize skin). Mix Witch Hazel, Vegetable Glycerin and Essential Oils in a bowl and whisk. Add water and whisk until well blended. Pour into a spray bottle. Shake before using. User questions & answers
Question: | Do legs remove what is tru measure longxwide want to remove legs to use in wonderwood stove |
Answer: | The legs are removable, I’m not sure of the measurements, mine is in a 55 gallon barrel stove. |
Question: | Is this the full length of a 55 gallon drum or is it designed for a 30 gallon drum |
Answer: | It is not the full length of a 55 gallon drum or the 30 gallon drum. I have the 55-gallon drum on my Barrel stove and it is about 3/4 of the interior. It's worked well for four years no complaints. It's just now starting to wear out. |
Question: | Can I get the grate into the barrel through the Vogelzang door |
Answer: | I have a US Stove with a 10" x 10" door and it fit. The Vogelzang kit says 11" x 10" door. It takes some finesse, a little back & forth. We use our stove all winter on our porch. 2 cords of wood per year. The Vogelzang grate is our third grate. The other 2 were melted piles of steel on the bottom of the barrel each year. This year the grate was in the same shape as when we put it in last fall. Good luck |
Question: | Can you burn pellets on this |
Answer: | No. It would be like barbecuing beans. They fall through the grates. |
Product description
The US Stove Vogelzang DR55 gallon drum is a closed head steel barrel, unpainted and suitable for use with any US Stove Company or Vogelzang barrel camp stove kit (BSK1000). Constructed of heavy duty steel for longer performance, with material thickness of 18 gauge on the top, 20 gauge on the body and 18 gauge on the bottom. The barrel camp stove is one of the most basic stove designs. The DR55 barrels have been used, cleaned and then bead blasted. The DR55 drums have not been painted so there may be small areas of surface rust that can easily be sanded out. Oils may be present on the surfaces that will need to be burned off during the initial use. The DR55 can be used with the BSK1000 model for a complete barrel camp stove kit. Creating a barrel stove is easy, just cut a hole for the door in the end of the barrel and cut a hole in the side for the flue, attach the legs, door and flue to the stove and add wood. Barrel paint and color finish may varya and are coated with a rust inhibitor. Painting the stove with a high temperature stove paint is recommended for the best looks.
- Heavy duty steel assures longer performance and durability
- Material thickness: top 18 gauge, body 20 gauge, bottom 18 gauge
- For use with the BSK1000 barrel camp stove kit
- Unpainted and bead blasted ready for use
- Barrels are new and have not been used for chemicals
User questions & answers
Question: | I plan to use this as a wood stove, doI have to burn off the paint or other residue before installing it |
Answer: | It arrives unpainted raw steel. Didn't notice any coating that burned off. |
Question: | is this "stronger" than other barrels? rated to take heat more, or not rust... something special to justify the additional cost |
Answer: | These are unpainted but other than that they're similar to other 55 gallon barrels. Due to the size part of the price is to cover the oversized shipping cost UPS and FedEx charges. |
Question: | Can you heat water in this drum using a flame beneath it |
Answer: | I used it as a burn barrel. So I think you can heat water in it. |
Question: | do they sell grated tops as well for the 55 Gallon drums to hold debree in when burning |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size stove pipe does it use |
Answer: | If It did have oil holes they are located on the motor end plates. A flashlight may help you locate them easier. Be aware that some times the oil holes may be locate on the side or bottom while being mounted in place. You may have to unplug the unit and remove it from the pipe to ease access to service it. |
Question: | Is the door sold separately or what |
Answer: | There is a thermostatically controlled switch inside of the box. All you have to do is plug it in and build a fire, once the temperature gets high enough it should kick on automatically. If you start noticing a rattling sound after a while, there is an allen screw that holds the blade on the shaft of the motor. You can remove the side panel and tighten it up. I had to do that to mine. |
Question: | Add states fuel is “gas” and list propane & kerosene. can it be converted to natural gas ? also does the igniter come with the kit |
Answer: | As long as the pipe size is the same on the oil stove and it burns clean, I believe it would be fine to use. Keep in mind there isn't a way to access the inside of the heat reclaimer to clean build-up except through the stove pipe so you might want to use a section of telescoping pipe to make it easier on yourself. |
Question: | Does it come with both barrels |
Answer: | I have no idea where it is made. All that I know is that mine was UL listed |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this includes the barrel or just the pieces to attach |
Answer: | No barrel included |
Question: | Do the doors seal |
Answer: | I just bought this kit and made the barrel stove. No the door doesn't seal. I wouldn't use this kit on a stove you intend to use indoors. Its very rough. The flue part isn't contoured at the same radius as a 55 gallon drum. the bolts will pull the sheet metal to it. I used a tube of high heat mortar caulk as gasket material for where the door and flue bolt on. the legs are the same way. The stove pipe doesn't fit over the flue but goes inside. that's a smoke leak point. the air inlet adjustment point on the door doesn't seal either. |
Question: | Waht is barrels demintions |
Answer: | We used 55 gallon steel drums |
Question: | what size pipe fits the damper |
Answer: | 6 inch stove pipe |

User questions & answers
Question: | are these pumice |
Answer: | Used these in a standard wood stove, run at the usual temperatures with a hot burn daily to burn the creosote out of the stovepipe, for about a year. They've held up well. They arrived packaged well in bubble wrap, all bricks intact. For the couple odd sizes needed for the floor pattern, they cut easily with a diamond blade on a circular saw. A carbide hacksaw blade would likely work as well for a brick or two. Laid out result was a nice tight fit. Should work nicely for any wood fired stove application in the firebox, size and thickness of course taken into consideration. If it's in the oven cooking space, can't answer, as the materials and what might go airborne and into the food would be at issue. It seems that would be strictly a manufacturer question. |
Question: | Would these work well in a wood fired pizza oven as the floor |
Answer: | Yes. The bricks can easily handle the inside of a fire place which reaches temp above 800 degrees. Placing them along the inside walls of a grill would prob hold the heat in better. |
Question: | Can this be used in a Grill to hold heat? A grill where food is cooked |
Answer: | I used them in a propane forge and they melted in under an hour The maximum temperature of a forge is supposed to be 2400 F. |
Question: | are these temp rated at upto |
Answer: | Hello, Thank you for your question. You can silicone the top plate to the top of the clay tile. It will overhang or you can trim it if you would like to. |

Features:
This is a fan that uses heat to generate electricity as an energy source to circulate the hot air generated by the wood burning fireplace. There is a thermoelectric module on the fan, which acts as a small generator to drive the fan motor. When this generator module experiences the heat difference between the top and bottom surfaces, it generates current. The bottom of the fan heats the bottom surface of the module, while the top of the module is kept cool by the top heat sink of the fan.
No battery or power supply is required!
In other words, as long as it is placed on the burning stove, it will absorb the heat energy to drive the fan to rotate, thereby blowing the hot air above the wood burning fireplace directly to the living area, increasing the air circulation in room and improving the heating efficiency of the stove
The rotation speed of the fan varies depending on the temperature of the wood-burning stove. The higher the stove temperature, the faster the rotation speed. When the stove temperature is so low that the fire is extinguished, the rotation speed slows down until it stops.product advantages:
To save fuel, the fan distributes heat from the furnace to provide better fuel efficiency;
Self-generation-no plug-no battery;
Quiet operation;
Start by itself, adjust speed and stop;
Simple and stylish design.
