13 best metal gas containers
Metal gas containers are commonly used in camping and outdoor activities to store and transport fuel for stoves and other equipment. These containers are designed to safely hold and dispense various types of fuels, such as propane, butane, or white gas. Here are some key points about metal gas containers:
Material: Metal gas containers are typically made of lightweight yet durable materials such as aluminum or steel. These materials are chosen for their ability to withstand the pressure and potential impacts associated with outdoor use.
Capacity: Metal gas containers come in various sizes and capacities to accommodate different fuel needs. Smaller containers are suitable for backpacking or solo camping, while larger ones are used for group camping or extended trips.
Safety Features: Gas containers are designed with safety in mind. They often include features like pressure relief valves to prevent over-pressurization and built-in flame arrestors to minimize the risk of flames traveling back into the container.
Sealing Mechanism: A secure and leak-proof sealing mechanism is crucial for preventing fuel leakage and ensuring the safe storage and transportation of gas. Many metal gas containers have threaded caps or seals that provide a tight closure.
Fuel Compatibility: It's essential to use the appropriate container for the type of fuel you intend to store. Different fuels have different properties and require containers designed to handle their specific characteristics.
Portability: Many metal gas containers are designed with portability in mind. They often feature handles or carry straps for ease of transport. Some are also designed to be stackable to save space.
Regulations: When using metal gas containers for camping and outdoor activities, it's essential to follow local regulations and safety guidelines regarding the storage and transportation of fuel. This may include restrictions on the maximum amount of fuel that can be carried or transported.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity of metal gas containers. This includes inspecting for signs of corrosion, ensuring seals are intact, and keeping the containers clean and free of debris.
Use with Stoves: Metal gas containers are commonly used in conjunction with camp stoves and lanterns. They provide a reliable source of fuel for cooking, heating, and lighting during outdoor adventures.
Environmental Considerations: When using metal gas containers, it's important to follow Leave No Trace principles, which include proper disposal of empty containers and minimizing the environmental impact of outdoor activities.
Overall, metal gas containers are essential tools for outdoor enthusiasts who rely on portable stoves and equipment that require fuel. Choosing the right container and using it safely are key factors in ensuring a successful and safe outdoor experience.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the can marked (preferably by embossment) to indicate the "5 gallon" level |
Answer: | As far as I know there are no marks. The opening is tight so you really can't see inside anyway. There's a screen to prevent anything but gas from entering. I've never specifically measured but if you go to the gas station and put in exactly 5 gallons my guess is the gas will just reach the bottom of the screen which reaches down about 3 or 4 inches and that can be your mark |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | All Justrite safety cans are produced in our Mattoon, Illinois manufacturing facility. |
Question: | Is the 1" nozzle too large to dispense gasoline directly into an automobile? Or is it sized only to fit the larger opening on diesel cars/trucks |
Answer: | A standard unleaded gasoline nozzle is only 13/16". If the spout is anywhere near 1 inch, it will NOT fit into the hole to open the flapper. |
Question: | Does this can self vent when not pouring? I am looking for a gas can that can handle changes in altitude. It is hard to find 100% gas where I need it |
Answer: | This can has a sealed lid with automatic positive-pressure relief that vents between 3 and 5 psig (0.2 and 0.35 bar) to protect against explosion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Aside from the caps, are these solid cans |
Answer: | No you can not , or at least not very well . I just got mine today and tried , I used another sharpeners tool for planer blades , delta sharpening center 23-710 , The wheel to the Delta is to soft and can not find harder wheel . The wheel to the Wen is fine but I also just returned it because a , it sounds like , a plastic gear broke after half an hour of use ! well cheap . So it is possible but the accessory cost more than the machine , there is an accessory you can buy ...but it does not look like it would work well at all , remember you have to keep equal pressure to sharpen blades . hope this helps |
Question: | Can these cans hold 10-15 lbs of pressure |
Answer: | It is 110V. |
Question: | What gray replace my caps is the guy talking about |
Answer: | The issue that I've had with the Tormek truing tool is that if you put the notch on the tool against the guide bar, like you're supposed to, the diamond point doesn't make it all the way to the outside of the wheel. I have to place the bar in the notch to align it, than pull it out about half an inch. |
Question: | Do I just put gas in it w/o any cleaning and use it in the car |
Answer: | Not totally sure but I will say this: The stone side is definitely a wet stone system, you wouldn't want to use it without the water. The other side, the leather wheel, is dry. You do put compound on it but it is a "dry" buffing system. |

Answer: | Minnie if you dont have an answer and to everyone else. Dont reply to questions IF YOU DONT have the answer. |
Question: | Are the lines made of silicone |
Answer: | I bought these caps and changed the rubber gasket to a thinner one and it works great. No leaks and this thing lives on the back of my Jeep with fuel in it all the time. I also painted it black with spray paint so It doesn't look like plastic.https://www.amazon.com/Gas-Can-Cap-Replacement-Gasoline/dp/B00P9R1TH2/ref=lp_9023186011_1_8?srs=9023186011&ie=UTF8&qid=1472695342&sr=8-8 |
Question: | I see 2 different pumps in 2 different pictures. How do you know which pump you get |
Answer: | Yes. You can fill it up and leave it in your car until needed. However on hot days it will need to be bled to release the vapor now and again. Just screw the cap off slow til you hear come out. Good can! Been using mine for almost 2 years now! |

Question: | What is the diameter of the funnel discharge? Will it fit into a standard vehilcle fuel filler opening |
Answer: | with the included detachable funnel it will be fine. place the funnel in the fuel filler on your vehicle then pull the handle to fill and release to stop.. |
Question: | has anyone used this in California - how does the rubber seal on the gas nozzle seal on the can? I am not able to get a good seal and therefore the p |
Answer: | You’re exactly right. This can’t be used in California’s because of the mandated rubber boot. The boot is supposed to prevent gas vapors from escaping into the environment. A seal must be formed or the gas pump won’t start. This can’s lid prevents the rubber boot from even coming close to the can’s opening, so a seal can’t be formed. |
Question: | Can I use it for kerosene |
Answer: | Yes you can use it for kerosene. We do ask that you label it with what you are putting inside. The blue cans "represents" kerosene. Red- means gasoline, yellow means diesel. |
Question: | I couldn't get the pump to pump gas into the can. any ideas? ps: if you don't have an answer, please do not respond |
Answer: | ok. we bought one too.. it was a pain at first but husband remedied problem... ok so first remove only funnel from can. next just squeezeyellow plastic handle toward red metal stationary handle and turn on gas pump.... any prob call 727 584 6722 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use a siphon to empty gas from this can |
Answer: | The container and tygon tubing will be fine. The manufacturer of the pump (turnigy) states that it works with petrol and nitro fuel. Kerosene is technically petrol. I would give it a shot. The pump will probably be fine. |
Question: | How long before gas "expires" inside this can |
Answer: | 1/8 silicone tubing |
Question: | can the flow of the gas be controlled |
Answer: | You get the oval pump with the push button switch. |
Question: | Is flame arrestor removable |
Answer: | The plastic caps are super cheap. I purchased 2 and one of them cracked entirely around the black rim within 2 months. I'm waiting for the other to do the same. If you are going to be driving around with them as I am, the caps are a big issue for me. I am going to look at replacing them with better quality cans. |

Answer: | Our 2 gal gas cans are cheaper. They are $38.50 free shipping where the 5 gallon are $40.90 free shipping. |
Question: | How hard is it to remove the yellow funnel (to fill the can)? Does it just pull on and off? Is it threaded |
Answer: | First time it was tough to get the yellow funnel on, but after removing it and putting it back on a few times it goes on and off pretty easily. The yellow funnel is not threaded You really need to have the handle all the way retracted as far as it will go to put the yellow funnel on and off. The return spring on the lid is very heavy duty so you need to really pull on that handle to get it all the way back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any way to keep the self-closing lid open while you're filling the can from a larger container that requires two hands to hold and pour |
Answer: | Good question. I open the self closing lid and then place the filler nozzle in to keep the self closing lid open. It’s a little ouchward if the filling can is full. |
Question: | Is a guarantee on these cans ? I bought one less then a year ago and it is leaking on the bottom already |
Answer: | I believe they have a 10 Year warranty. |
Question: | Is it made in chine |
Answer: | The can is made in the USA. I own 3, this one for 2 Cycle mix, Yellow for Diesel, Red for Gas. All are sturdy and well made. You will not be disappointed. My wife was skeptical, but after they arrived and she used them, she asked "Why didn't we get these sooner?". Need I say more? |
Question: | Justrite makes both 5/8" and 1" diameter flexible hoses. What diameter hose does this can have |
Answer: | Mine came with the 5/8 hose and that's what's listed for this part number. I have a 5 gal can with the 1" hose and like the 5/8" better for all my lawn and yard equipment. I am thinking abut switching out the larger one on the bigger can. |

Question: | What is the mechanism like that opens the Eagle UI-50 safety can for filling / pouring? (Cannot tell from the pic or description |
Answer: | You can see a better picture here...http://www.toolfetch.com/type-i-safety-cans-ui-50fseg.shtml?gclid=CJ6w2Lab3rMCFexAMgod1VUAGwUse the mouse-over zoom feature. The teapot analogy is spot-on. The top is HEAVY spring loaded to close. Pulling the top's handle to the can's handle opens the spout. Much like a lawnmower safety lever. They must be engaged with each other to open the lid.I got sick of my plastic can's o-rings leaking all the time, and this solved that issue. The only CON - is you must remove the funnel every time you fill the can. |
Question: | Has anyone else had an issue with gas "flying" out of can when opening after carrying it? It seems to pressurize, and when you pull on handle, look ou |
Answer: | Mine presurizes too. When the pressure equalizes when you open it, you can hear it. However, I am not concerned becuase it has a flame arrestor on it and no fuel spits out. |
Question: | With the funnel attached, I dont have much ability to tilt the can up very high, so I can only pour ~1/2 of the volume into my car tank. Help! Thanks |
Answer: | You can do it: once it's as empty as you can get it with the conventional pouring angle, SLOWLY rotate the can without removing the funnel from your car's gas tank. It will reposition the can and the rest of the gas will flow out. You just slowly rotate it 180 degrees (in a circular motion looking from the sky down...like clockwise). I don't know if that is how it's designed but it works. |
Question: | Does the Eagle UI-50 safety can funnel snap on and off easily to facilitate storage, or is it intended to stay in place |
Answer: | The safety funnel pops off relatively easily for storage. It is a touch more snug at first use, but after putting it on and taking it off several times it becomes a bit smoother. Once you do it one or two times you will get the hang of it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | my understanding is you can't use galvanized steel with diesel, is the can galvanized inside |
Answer: | The sulfur in the diesel reacts with the zinc in the galvanization, and the two go into a suspension in the fluid, which then builds up on many critical engine components, like fuel pumps, injectors, etc. These two have also been found to combine into zinc sulphate, which is sorta like a gel, and gums everything up, blocking the flow of fuel. Diesel should never be stored in a galvanized steel container, consult your equipment manufacturer, I’ll bet they agree. |
Question: | Is the handle metal or plastic |
Answer: | Plastic fill handle, metal can handle.. it's built cheaper than the justrite can for the same money. |
Question: | Can this can be used to store regular fuel, not just diesel? (I bought it without realizing it is marked for diesel |
Answer: | Yes, it can be used to store gasoline. We suggest that you mark the safety can with what is inside. All of our cans are made the same, but they are available in a variety of colors for the safe handling and storage of kerosene (blue), diesel (yellow), gasoline (red) and combustible liquids such as oils (green) |
Question: | Anyone else having trouble getting the Eagle F-15 funnel to fit this can |
Answer: | The trick is to open the can with the plastic handle UNDER the metal handle. It's the only way to get the lid high enough to get the funnel on. Not to hard once you get used to it. |

Answer: | In this photo - the handle is tucked behind the funnel. There is a handle. |
Question: | Could this be used for lighter fuel |

Question: | What are the full outer dimensions of the 1.5 L bottle? Any suggestions for a bottle holder for a motorcycle? Thanks |
Answer: | I keep about 4 full cans in garage. No noticeable fumes. Personally I wouldnt travel with any cans inside the car.. bed of a truck but not a car. Ur talking about a potential explosion inside. |
