11 best dehydrated backpacking meals

Dehydrated backpacking meals are lightweight and convenient food options designed for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, campers, and backpackers. These meals are a popular choice for those who want to enjoy a hot and nutritious meal while on the trail. Here's what you need to know about them:

  1. Dehydration Process: Dehydrated backpacking meals are made by removing the moisture content from food. This preservation method extends the shelf life of the food, making it suitable for long trips without refrigeration.

  2. Lightweight: One of the primary advantages of dehydrated meals is their lightweight nature. Because most of the moisture has been removed, they are much lighter than traditional canned or fresh foods, making them ideal for backpacking.

  3. Long Shelf Life: Dehydrated meals have a long shelf life, often lasting several years if stored in a cool, dry place. This makes them an excellent choice for emergency preparedness and long-term storage.

  4. Variety of Options: There is a wide variety of dehydrated meals available, including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. You can find options like pasta dishes, soups, stews, oatmeal, and more, catering to various dietary preferences and restrictions.

  5. Easy Preparation: Dehydrated meals are designed for simplicity. To prepare them, you typically add hot water to the pouch or container, stir, and then let them rehydrate for a few minutes. Some meals are ready in as little as 5-10 minutes.

  6. Nutritional Content: Many dehydrated backpacking meals are nutritionally balanced, providing essential nutrients, calories, and protein to keep you fueled during outdoor activities.

  7. Compact Packaging: Dehydrated meals are often packaged in compact, vacuum-sealed pouches or containers, which take up minimal space in your backpack. This packaging also helps protect the food from moisture and external contaminants.

  8. Flavor and Taste: While dehydrated meals may not always match the taste of freshly cooked meals, many brands focus on improving flavor and texture. You can find options that are surprisingly tasty and satisfying.

  9. Dietary Considerations: There are dehydrated meals available for various dietary preferences, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and low-sodium options. Make sure to check the labels for specific dietary information.

  10. Cost: Dehydrated backpacking meals can be cost-effective, especially when compared to eating out while camping or hiking. They also reduce the need to carry heavy cooking equipment.

In summary, dehydrated backpacking meals are a convenient and practical food option for outdoor enthusiasts. They offer a lightweight and easy-to-prepare solution for enjoying hot and nourishing meals while on the trail, making them a popular choice for those engaged in camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does the 4 and 6 packs cost more than individual packs? Or am I missing something
Answer: The expiration date is October 2049
Question: What is the Tamari made from? Some Tamari is made from soy sauce that s made from wheat
Answer: 30 years from the manufacture date
Question: What is the date of manufacture
Answer: there are four sleeves of 18 crackers per sleeve.......totaling about 72 crackers. We have almost two years of shelf life. You can eat them right out of the box or to enhance the flavors, spritz olive oil on them and bake them on a cookie sheet for 3-5 minutes at 350 degrees. After you do that, they will sty crispy for two weeks.
Question: What is the expiration date
Answer: Fresh means that the product is made within the same day as harvest of the cassava root. (Some makers of this type of product wait days before making it.) When you harvest the crop, wash it, peel it, grate it, squeeze most the water out, grate it again and then cook it to par-baked, you remove any toxins. When you take it home home and finish baking it, you are completely safe by then. There has never been any reports of issues for over a hundred years that the news has reported in the Dominican Republic. I hope this helps. Ama!

User questions & answers

Question: how long can I store these for long-term emergency supplies
Answer: They're very big tablets. I don't recommend swallowing more than one at a time.
Question: Ingredients please
Answer: Hello Mrs. Cook! Thank you for your question concerning the Solaray Manganese. This product doesn't have the Prop 65 warning on the label. This was an oversite on Amazon. Please contact us if you have any other questions, or if there is something else that we can assist you with. Thank you for choosing Solaray and have a nice day. Matt
Question: Where is this manufactured? Country
Answer: I didn't take yet either, I learned about in a Nutriction class, I still have in my shelv.
Question: Are these supplements made in the USA
Answer: Hello Ben! Thank you for your question concerning the Solaray Manganese. This product is 50 mg of elemental manganese. Solaray doesn't list the amount of amino acids in this product. Please contact us if you have any other questions, or if there is something else that we can assist you with. Thank you for choosing Solaray and have a nice day. Matt
Question: Does this product contain any of the following: Soy, egg, corn, or wheat
Answer: I bought Solaray Manganese 50mg from Swanson's, not off Amazon. I'm only posting here because when I asked google about rancid Manganese I found this purchaser's question. I just got off the phone with Nutraceutical (the company behind the Solaray brand) because my bottle, too, smelled so rancid I would gag each time I would try to take it. I've taken manganese for 35 years and never had this horrible (like old, bad nuts or seeds) rancid odor. The girl was unconcerned and less than helpful (and they have not even acknowledged my email sent a week ago or the comment I put on Facebook). She claimed that it smells bad because it is "chelated" and that as far as they are concerned there "is no problem with it". I've searched google for either a confirmation or denial of her claim and haven't found either. Anyone that regularly cooks with grain knows that grain "germ" (or even just plain old rice which is an additive in this product) goes rancid when sitting too long, especially in a hot environment. I had emailed Neutraceutical over a week ago inquiring about this and didn't get any kind of response. When I found them on FB (hiring ad only) I tried contacting them that way and received no response. So, buyer beware.
Question: Does this product have shell fish
Answer: The ingredients read: purified water, manganese gluconate, potassium iodide as a preservative.
Question: Are the minerals chelated
Answer: The Supplement Facts do not show any vitamin c listed and it says that potassium iodide as a preservative under ingredients but does not list amount.
Question: does this product have fulvic acid
Answer: Check the Standard Process website: https://www.standardprocess.com/Products/Standard-Process/Ligaplex-I#.WO0Y_2nyuUk
Question: What size are the tablets. What do they look like ? Are they easy to swallow
Answer: Generally -- Ligaplex I was designed for active joints, Ligaplex II was designed for degenerating joints. I take them both and find that it works very well for me. When my son, 30 years old, was recovering from knee surgery, I gave them both to him . it has been a year since he has taken them , he is now 33, and no longer needs to take either one. Hope this helps

TASTE THE DIFFERENCE Good To-Go meals are different from freeze dried meals, mre's and other camping meals because we cook ours traditionally, from scratch, and then make them shelf-stable simply by removing the bulk of the water. There's no need for added preservatives, chemicals or an abundance of added sodium. The result is a meal made from clean ingredients (that you can actually pronounce) that has the taste and texture of homemade, to be enjoyed wherever your adventures may take you.

GET CREATIVE While Good To-Go meals are DELICIOUS on their own, they're also great paired with other ingredients. Whether you're at camp cooking for a group, or just looking to include some fresh ingredients or added protein, consider using our meals as a base and experimenting with your recipes! It could be as simple as rolling it up in a tortilla, or as elaborate as a sit-down meal complete with a beer or wine pairing.
