10 best dehydrated backpacking foods

Dehydrated backpacking foods are lightweight and portable food options designed for outdoor enthusiasts, backpackers, campers, and hikers. These foods are specially processed to remove most of their moisture content, making them lightweight and convenient for carrying on outdoor adventures. Here's what you need to know about dehydrated backpacking foods:

  1. Long Shelf Life: Dehydrated foods have a longer shelf life compared to fresh foods because the removal of moisture helps prevent spoilage. This makes them ideal for extended trips and emergency food supplies.

  2. Lightweight: Dehydrated foods are lightweight, making them a popular choice for backpackers and hikers who need to carry their food with them. They are also compact and take up minimal space in a backpack.

  3. Nutrient Retention: The dehydration process retains a significant portion of the food's nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. However, some nutrients may be lost in the process.

  4. Variety: You can find a wide variety of dehydrated backpacking foods, including fruits, vegetables, meats, pasta, rice, and soups. Many brands offer complete meals that only require adding hot water to rehydrate.

  5. Easy Preparation: Preparing dehydrated foods in the wilderness is usually simple. Most items only require hot water to rehydrate and become ready to eat. This minimizes the need for cooking equipment and saves time.

  6. Customizable: Some outdoor enthusiasts prefer to create their own dehydrated meals by dehydrating ingredients at home. This allows for greater control over the ingredients and flavors in the meal.

  7. Packaging: Dehydrated foods are typically packaged in vacuum-sealed bags or pouches, which help preserve their freshness. Look for packaging that is easy to reseal to minimize waste.

  8. Caloric Density: Dehydrated foods are often calorie-dense, providing the energy needed for strenuous outdoor activities. This can be especially important on long hikes or when carrying a heavy backpack.

  9. Taste: The taste of dehydrated foods can vary widely depending on the brand and the specific meal. It's a good idea to try different options to find ones you enjoy.

  10. Water Requirements: Keep in mind that dehydrated foods require access to clean water for rehydration. Ensure you have a reliable source of water when planning your outdoor meals.

  11. Cost: While dehydrated foods can be convenient, they are often more expensive than their non-dehydrated counterparts. Consider the cost when planning your outdoor adventure budget.

  12. Special Dietary Needs: Many brands offer dehydrated foods tailored to specific dietary preferences or restrictions, such as vegetarian, gluten-free, or low-sodium options.

Dehydrated backpacking foods are a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts due to their convenience, long shelf life, and lightweight nature. They provide a practical solution for maintaining energy levels while exploring the great outdoors.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this company use peanuts in any of there meals
Answer: We use these for our dog’s pills he takes every night. You can’t really wrap it, but it works to more smoosh it around and form a ball around the pill. I d this by kind of sandwiching the pill between two pieces and pinching it all together, adding in more pieces of the treat if it breaks apart.
Question: How hot and spicy is this from a scale of 1-10 how hot
Answer: There is no silica pack in our Wellbites treats.
Question: What would cook time be at 10,000 feet
Answer: We have not been successful doing that.
Question: What is the shelf life
Answer: Yes, the company is located on the eastern shore of Maryland
