13 best coleman 12 volt coolers
Coleman 12-volt coolers are portable cooling devices designed for outdoor enthusiasts, campers, and travelers who need to keep their food and beverages cool while on the go. These coolers are a popular choice for camping, road trips, and other outdoor activities. Here's what you need to know about Coleman 12-volt coolers in the context of Coolers, Camp Kitchen, Camping Hiking, Outdoor Recreation, and Sports Outdoors:
Purpose: Coleman 12-volt coolers are designed to maintain a cool temperature inside, typically around 40°F (4.4°C), to keep food and drinks chilled. They are powered by a 12-volt DC power source, such as a car's cigarette lighter socket or a portable power supply.
Portability: These coolers are compact and portable, making them suitable for use in various outdoor settings. They are often used in camping trips, road trips, picnics, tailgating, and boating.
Power Source: As mentioned, Coleman 12-volt coolers operate on 12-volt DC power. They are typically designed to be plugged into a vehicle's DC power outlet, but some models may also work with portable power packs or generators.
Thermoelectric Cooling: Most Coleman 12-volt coolers use thermoelectric cooling technology. This technology relies on the Peltier effect to transfer heat from the inside of the cooler to the outside, thus maintaining a cool interior temperature. While they can cool items, they are not as effective as traditional compressor-based refrigerators.
Cooling Capacity: The cooling capacity of these coolers can vary depending on the model. They are generally suitable for keeping perishable foods and beverages cool but may not be suitable for freezing items.
Size and Capacity: Coleman offers a range of 12-volt cooler models with different sizes and capacities. The size you choose will depend on your needs and the amount of storage space required.
Features: Coleman 12-volt coolers often come with features like adjustable shelves, interior lighting, and cup holders on the lids. Some models also have the option to switch between cooling and warming functions.
Usage Tips: To maximize the efficiency of a Coleman 12-volt cooler, it's recommended to pre-chill items before placing them inside. Additionally, keep the cooler in a well-ventilated area and avoid overloading it, as this can affect its cooling performance.
Price Range: The price of Coleman 12-volt coolers can vary based on the model, size, and features. They are generally more affordable than high-end portable refrigerators but offer a cost-effective cooling solution for outdoor enthusiasts.
Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance are important to ensure the longevity and performance of the cooler. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific care recommendations.
In summary, Coleman 12-volt coolers are portable and convenient cooling solutions for outdoor activities, offering a reliable way to keep food and beverages cool while on the move. They are particularly popular among campers, road trippers, and outdoor enthusiasts who require a mobile cooling option during their adventures.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this keep drinks cold on an outdoor patio |
Answer: | This unit will keep things about 20 degrees cooler than the outside temp at best. I freeze a couple of water bottles or a freezer pack and it will keep things cold much better. Takes about 10 hrs or more before the frozen bottles melt enough to drink with the outside temp at over 90 degrees. |
Question: | What mechanism generates the cool |
Answer: | 40 Quart PowerChill Hot/Cold Thermoelectric Cooler Take some cold drinks on your next road trip while leaving the ice at home with a Coleman 40 Quart PowerChill Thermoelectric Cooler. More than a cooler, but not quite a refrigerator, it cools up to 40 °F below the surrounding temperature without any ice. So if you use your cooler in an environment where the temperature is 70 °F, this cooler will maintain an internal temperature around 30 °F. You can use it like you would any other cooler except, instead of throwing ice inside, you simply plug in the 12V car power adapter. Then add your pre-chilled drinks and snacks. Your cooler will reach maximum coldness in about three hours (you can speed this up by adding Coleman ice substitutes) and stay cold as long as it's plugged in. Large enough to hold 44 cans, you'll have plenty of space for refreshments for the whole trip, and you can keep all your contents organized with the storage tray. |
Question: | Can it be powered with a battery |
Answer: | Sure....It is 12 volt, so it can be powered with the included cigarette lighter cord, or from any 12 volt battery with the appropriate cord for connection. |
Question: | How long can it stay plugged in before draining battery |
Answer: | That question depends totally on your battery supply. Mine runs off of 2 -12V batteries and I can leave it on for 12 hrs or more before I have to start the truck and make sure the batteries don't get past half used. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long is the provided power cord that goes in the 12V receptacle? Can you purchase a longer one if needed |
Answer: | About 90 inches to the end of the 12V plug (the plug itself is about 4 inches, so I'd subtract that from the distance the cooler can be from the receptacle). I did not look for a longer one, but I did purchase an adapter that would allow you to plug into a standard 120V outlet. The end that goes into the cooler is hardwired, so you couldn't replace it but I'll bet you could by an adapter to extend it. |
Question: | Is it tall enough for milk gallons or 2 liter bottles to stand upright |
Answer: | Yes 2 gallons standing and I put 4 lbs of ice just in case, but the ice did not melt |
Question: | Can you tell me what power sources this cooler can connect to out of the box? 12 Volt DC? 120 Volt AC? Both |
Answer: | As of 2019, I only received the 12 volt plug that goes into the cigarette lighter. I saw more people saying that they received both compared to those only receiving the 12V which comes attached to the cooler. I had to buy the 120 volt cord as I will need that to plug into my solar as my 12 volt power sources do not work. |
Question: | The stated product dimensions are 24 x 17.2 x 16 inches. Is that L x W x H or H x L x W, etc.? Just want to know if it will fit in the trunk of my Camry |
Answer: | It doesn't matter - you can use the cooler either standing up, like a fridge, in which case the dimensions are 24"tall x 16"wide x 17.25deep, or use it laying down, like an ice chest, in which the dimensions are 17.25"tall x 24"long x 16"wide |

Coleman Company History
W.C. Coleman could see the light for the darkness. The young salesman was taking a stroll after a hard day’s work selling typewriters, and spotted a new type of lamplight in a drugstore window in Brockton, Alabama. This new light burned with a strong, steady white flame and was fueled by gasoline. The standard lamp of the era burned kerosene and produced a smoky, flickering, yellowish light. W.C. was stricken with very poor eyesight, and was very interested in this new, steady white light that enabled him to read even the smallest print in books and on medicine bottles. Coleman saw potential in the new light, and through his vision a new company was born that would put America’s farms and ranches in a new light, and would eventually make his name synonymous with outdoor fun.

About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.
In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this unit run on 110v and 12 volt ? does it come with both adapters or do you have to purchase them |
Answer: | This cooler does run on both 110v and 12v and comes with both adapters. I purchased this cooler for my son as he works in the oil field for him to use on location. He absolutely loves it and says it is the greatest cooler ever! |
Question: | Can you give me the model number of this unit? I see the price varies if it is the 1497 model or the older 1496 model |
Answer: | Hi Paul, although I do not have the model mentionned in this query, I have the model #5645, I paid around $90.00 for mine 4 years ago. But I see from the picture that it is quite similar. We use ours when we go camping as a supplemental refrigerator as our RV has a medium size fridge, 8 cu.ft. I think. But mostly it is useful when we spend our winter in Texas. We enjoy the fact that the cooler keeps the water, milk, juices, beer, etc. very cold. Once in a while the fan starts making a noise, that's because ice has formed on the inside fins. That's how cold they get. All we do then is let it thaw, wipe the water and replug it to outlet. Well worth the purchased. |
Question: | Can the cooler be used in both an upright, like a reg fridge and laying down, like a standard cooler |
Answer: | I am not sure if it can be used in a laying down position, my brother always had it upright in his semi. He got a new semi that has a built in freezer/fridge. The Coleman Powerchill that I got for him worked fine for about 1 years then quite. |
Question: | what are the size dimensions |
Answer: | Not near it now but roughly 2 feet tall, 1.5 wide w/ one shelf; found it extremely handy and practical you can stand on side or lay it down what ever works for your situation..... Power option was a big sell- my Jeep has a 110 outlet but is also powered by car cigarette lighter....... |

User questions & answers
Question: | From what I see in the reviews it seems that there is a problem with the cord getting to hot and the tip of it melting. Is there a better quality cord |
Answer: | I've had no issues with the cord attached to the cooler itself but I did have an issue with the Schumacher PC-6 120AC to 6A 12V DC Power Converter that I purchased for indoor use. It ran hot and in less than 6 months it died (Amazon graciously allowed me to return it and gave me a full refund). I replaced it with a Wagan 5 Amp AC to 12V DC Power Adapter. While it gets a little warm, it runs much cooler than with the Schumacher adapter. In fact, the Igloo runs quieter and appears to be more efficient with this adapter. That said I think the power source may be the root cause of the issues that others may have with overheating/melting. I run my cooler inside, all day, everyday as it serves as my office refrigerator and I've had it since last November. I love it and will buy another on the sad day planned obsolescence kicks in. |
Question: | Why is the larger unit cheaper than the smaller unit |
Answer: | Really don't know but I found out that the larger one keeps cooler much longer and at a lower degree. |
Question: | What is the power consumption in amps? I'm useing deep cycle batteries, and low amps is a must |
Answer: | Working current, battery consumption is between 3.5 to 4.8 Amps according to the owner's operating manual. The current draw is 6 amps maximum at 12-volt DC. I hope this is helpful. |
Question: | What is the inside height with the lid closed? Looking to keep some Smartwater bottles in there (they are 12" tall and 3" diameter). Thanks in advance |
Answer: | I have the same question except I'm wondering if the lid will close with 2-litre soda bottles standing inside. That 13 1/2" height measurment sounds rreeaalllly close to the height of a 2 litre bottle. Has anyone actually tried it? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you think this is a better cooler than the Coleman cooler for a truck driver? I'm looking at this one or the Igloo one |
Answer: | Read my review of the Coleman Hot/Cold 40 Qt. Had a Coleman from 2000 that finally died due to a design flaw that allowed the fan to bind in the nacelle/ housing. Bought a new one that lasted 10 weeks. Finally got my refund 4 months later. Can't compare it to this one, but some of the other answers here are misleading. This product is not a portable refrigerator. Those have thermostats and use a compressor. Peltier devices are power hogs - about 5% efficient at transferring heat. So, 95% of the heat you feel on the exhaust of these is produced by the Peltier device, not from inside the cooler. Also, some heat is transferred through inefficient insulation. That's why it takes hours to remove heat from the interior of these coolers before you can start using them. |
Question: | Does this actually cool to 40 degrees or does it cool to 40 degrees below ambient temperature? That is a huge difference it gets to 100 where I live |
Answer: | We used it while traveling out west last August where temps were in the 100's and it kept everything really cold. |
Question: | ft cord is not long enough to reach the back of my minivan, will cooler work properly with a dc cord extension? Is it quiet enough to sleep next to |
Answer: | I believe it should work with a DC cord extension. We had the cool in our hotel rooms while traveling and had no problems with it being noisy. |
Question: | How long will it stay cold when not powered |
Answer: | If powered long enough to get to its maximum temperature of 38F and turned off it will stay cool for approximately 24 hours. By way of a couple of specific examples: (a) I’ve placed a bag of ice in this cooler when it was at its peak cool temp of 38F, turned the cooler in off, and had the ice stay frozen (without ANY liquid water forming) for 6-10 hours depending upon the outside temp, and (b) I’ve placed a bag |
