User questions & answers

Question: Are the mesh side panels more like the ones on the osprey daylight models or the mira ag model in terms of stretch
Answer: Not familiar with Mira AG, but the side pockets are not like those in the Daylite. More stretchy and taller, and has an elastic band to hold in water bottles better. Lower compression straps can be used to tighten the side panel around the contents, but top heavy things like bottles can still shift.
Question: Is this the pack that can be attached to daylite compatible osprey packs
Answer: The Hikelite is not designed to specifically attach to compatible Osprey Packs. That is the Daylite and Daylite Plus which can attach to the following packs: Aether/Ariel AG Series, Aether/Ariel Pro Series, Volt/Viva Series, Shuttle Series, Sojourn Series, Farpoint 80, Farpoint/Fairview Wheeled Travel Pack Series, Farpoint/Fairview Trek Series and Porter Series.
Question: Can it be used for school books
Answer: Of course it can. But not that many and not that appropriate as the book covers may be crumpled or folded if not well placed. This is really for hiking.
Question: Is it small enough to fit under a seat on a airline
Answer: You can certainly fit it under the seat in front of you. They may call it 26 but I find it holds gear more like a 20-22L pack. Its not a particularly good choice for travel or carry-on though since you asked. It has minimal organization and doesn't feel that comfy with heavier loads that travel often means. The waist strap is for keeping it in place, too, and offers no help with loads. There are much better travel pack options out there. If you want some better Osprey travel options in the same price range, check out the Tropos, Momentum, Radial or Nebula packs. I also have an Osprey Porter 30 that is far superior to the Hikelite 26 for travel/carry-on. They are all much better choices for travel and all will fit under the seat in front of you if you don't over stuff them. My fave out of the ones I mentioned here is the Tropos 32. Its big enough to travel for a week, fit under the seat in front of you, and it cinches down really nicely to be used as a day pack when you arrive at your destination. It also has magnificent organization, the same mesh breathing back panel as the Hikelite, and it has a kick stand that really helps with travel. Yes, a kick stand! How cool is that when you are waiting on long airport lines!

So my bottle was manufactured January 2017. Most products have a shelf life of 3 years after date of product manufacture.

Product description

Lightweight and streamlined, the Fairview Series is an ideal travel pack for fast-moving globetrotters. Despite their minimalist weights, these women's specific, full-featured packs offer plenty of organization and travel-focused features. The stowaway harness and hipbelt disappears for safe keeping when you check your bag, and durable fabrics offer added protection. A large panel zip provides convenient access to the main compartment, lockable sliders keep your gear secure, dual front compression straps slim down your pack when you carry less, and a padded laptop/tablet sleeve keeps your electronics secure. The Fairview 40’s compact size ensures carry-on compliance on most flights. No matter where you go, the Fairview is backed by Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee.

  • Large, lockable U-zip duffel-style access to main compartment - 40L total volume
  • Meets carry-on size restrictions for most airlines (Size Small/Medium: 21.3H X 13.8W X 9D inches)
  • Lockable zipper access to padded laptop & tablet sleeve (fits up to most 15" laptops)
  • Stowaway backpanel, shoulder straps and hipbelt with zippered rear flap for protection
  • Two front mesh waterbottle pocket
  • Scratch-free pocket for sunglasses or devices
  • Sport Type: Outdoor Lifestyle

User questions & answers

Question: What are the female clips on the shoulder straps for? They're right below the compression straps that are at the top of the shoulder straps
Answer: They are for the Farpoint/Fairview daypack that zips onto and comes with the 55L and 70L packs. Unfortunately, they are not sold separately but if you do have one then it can attach to the front of the 40L pack as well
Question: What size can the hip/waist belt extend to? Is there a pack available for plus size women
Answer: You can use this pack if you are plus sized. If the hip belt doesn’t fit, you just need to ask for a belt extender from osprey. You fill out a form On their website and they will mail it to you free of charge. Very simple process.
Question: Will it fit under seat in airplane
Answer: I've put it under the seat in several airlines, including international, domestic and smaller airplanes. The bag does stick out a few inches into your foot space but has fit well enough on all of these planes to not be an issue.
Question: Can you list every difference between this and the Farpoint 40? Thank you
Answer: I keep asking the same question and nobody has a satisfactory answer apart from the vague and generic so I went to REI and tried on the various packs to figure it out once and for all: So regardless of weight, generally women have less space between the base of their necks and their shoulders, ie we don't have broad shoulders like men. The shoulder straps on the Fairview are therefore narrower which prevents them digging into the neck, and curve inward around the front of the shoulder and back out around the chest instead of straight up and down like the Farpoint, so it doesn't dig into the boney area of the shoulder near the outer end of the clavicle. The hip belt is attached at a slight angle, so it sits better on sloping hips instead of hips that go straight up and down like men's. As a minor detail, the Fairview also have clips on the straps where you can stowaway the chest strap when not in use, as well as attach a daypack. As far as I know the Farpoint does not have this feature, it only has elastic bands there. Then there are the obvious colour differences, and subtle differences in particular measurements here and there, but that's about it. The S/M is 40l, and the XS/S is 38l similar to the farpoints M/L vs S/M.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this backpack waterproof
Answer: I ‘m guessing resistant.
Question: Are these the new 2017 model. specifically the 36? we may end up doing an overnight but mostly we day hike. torn between manta and this
Answer: The darker purple that is being used for demonstration is the Juneberry Purple.
Question: What is the difference between xs/s and wx/small
Answer: It has a kind of hard plastic piece in the back with ridged foam on one side. There’s a hidden opening inside the back at the bottom that allows you to remove this piece if you’re going to wash the pack. For me, it wasn’t quite enough—I felt like my laptop was providing the structure, which I didn’t want. But my daughter is using it for high school (no laptop) and feels it’s very comfortable and supportive.
Question: Why don't these come in any sizes larger than a medium
Answer: It's about the same, really a pretty pack.
