13 best trunk bike racks
Trunk bike racks are specialized carriers designed to transport bicycles on the rear trunk of a vehicle, typically a car. These bike racks are a popular choice for individuals who want to transport their bicycles conveniently and securely. Here's what you should know about trunk bike racks:
Design: Trunk bike racks are typically made of metal or durable plastic and consist of a frame that attaches to the trunk of a vehicle. The frame features arms with cradles or straps to hold and secure the bicycles.
Attachment: Trunk bike racks are secured to the vehicle's trunk or hatch using a combination of straps, hooks, and clips. They are designed to be adjustable and compatible with a wide range of vehicle types.
Capacity: Trunk bike racks come in various configurations, with options to transport one to several bicycles at a time. The capacity depends on the specific model and brand.
Bike Compatibility: These racks are designed to accommodate various types of bicycles, including road bikes, mountain bikes, and hybrid bikes. Some models have adjustable cradles to fit different frame sizes and styles.
Installation: Trunk bike racks are relatively easy to install and do not require a roof rack or hitch. They can be mounted on most vehicles with a trunk or rear hatch.
Security: Many trunk bike racks include locks or security features to prevent theft of the bikes and the rack itself. These locks may secure the rack to the vehicle and the bikes to the rack.
Protection: To protect the vehicle's finish, most trunk bike racks have padding or rubberized contact points where the rack comes in contact with the car's trunk or hatch.
Foldability: Some models are designed to fold up for compact storage when not in use. This feature can make it easier to store the rack when it's not transporting bikes.
Access: Depending on the design of the trunk bike rack and the vehicle, it may still be possible to access the trunk or hatch while the rack is attached.
Price Range: Trunk bike racks come in a range of price points, with more budget-friendly options as well as higher-end models with additional features.
Use Caution: It's important to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing and using trunk bike racks to ensure safety and prevent damage to the vehicle and bikes.
Trunk bike racks offer a convenient solution for transporting bicycles without the need for a dedicated roof rack or hitch. They are a popular choice for cyclists who want to take their bikes on road trips, outdoor adventures, or simply commute to their favorite biking spots. When selecting a trunk bike rack, make sure to choose one that is compatible with your vehicle and can safely secure your bicycles.

User questions & answers
Question: | So this is a weird question, but I'd like to take my bicycle with me on my commute. Can I lock my bicycle to the bike rack using a typical bike lock |
Answer: | Some people are suggesting locking the bike to the car with a cable. It should be noted that ANY cable, even the thickest and most secure ones on the market, can be cut in seconds. A cable of any type is, at best, a deterrent to the casual thief. A serious thief loves cables because they are so easily cut. If you have an expensive bike, the only option worth considering is a U-bolt type of lock. Simply remove your bike from the car rack and lock it to a post. Even U-bolts can be defeated but the time and tools required will send all but the most determined thief looking for easier prey, like a bike with a cable. |
Question: | I have 2000$ bike, is it worth the risk |
Answer: | It was fine for my $1,500 RadRover. It's good up to 70 pounds. What does your bike weigh? |
Question: | How well does this work on a 2010 honda crv |
Answer: | allensportsusa.com/fit-listgo to the allen sports fit list and check to see what is recommended for 2010 honda crv. If it is on the list and instructions are followed when installing, there shouldn't be any problems. |
Question: | Hi guys is it good for volvo suv xc90? does it easy for woman to put the bikes up herself |
Answer: | This rack (or any strap mounted carrier) should not be used on the Volvo XC models. The issue is that the top of the rear door on the XC's is made of extremely brittle fiberglass that can crack if anything (i.e. metal hooks or bike rack straps) is placed in the seem at the top of the rear door. We would recommend installing a receiver hitch on your vehicle and using a hitch mounted carrier. |

About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts, garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns more than three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Question: | About how long does it take to put on/ take off |
Answer: | Made in Mexico |
Question: | prius |
Answer: | Hello there, and thank you for reaching out. We're not longer producing the filters or Brita Squeeze Bottles, these filters are for our Premium Filtering Water Bottles. We hope this helps, for additional questions please reach out to our team at 800-242-7482 and reference number 200910-001362. Have a great day. Ashley from the Brita team |
Question: | my husband said it wont fit cause i have a girls bike and it wont fit his bike cause they are both cruisers w/o a solid straight bar |
Answer: | Nate, I can’t really answer which filter is better as that is a matter of opinion but according to the Brita site, the water bottle filters are effective in removing chlorine taste and odor as well as filtering class VI particulates. Class VI particulates are >50 microns in size. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does it fold |
Answer: | It doesn't have an exact expiration date. However, I bought this for my 13 yr old daughter. She drinks alot of room temperature water. (I'd say minimum of 6 bottles per day if not more) Because she drinks so much, I replace her filter every 45 days. I think it depends on how much water u think you'd drink daily. On average it can be used about 3 months before being changed out. I hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it hold all types of bike frames |
Answer: | The hole on the rack for the hitch pin is 1/2". This is designed to work with the No Wobble Bolt that is included with the rack. This bolt works to securely tighten the rack when installed on the vehicle and keeps the rack from moving during use. |
Question: | On a sedan, is the trunk space rendered useless when you use this ? Can you open close trunk as usual |
Answer: | The brackets that the straps are attached to rotate around the rack arms, making it fairly easy once you figure out the best position. I actually had 3 women's bikes on the rack with no problems. The straps were on the diagonal bar and the vertical bar below the seat and it was very tight, no movement at all. No issues with women's bikes at all here. |
Question: | Is there any sort of anti-theft device? Can someone just walk up and take it off if the car is parked |
Answer: | If you are talking about leaving the bikes, we purchased the doberman lock and secured the bikes and lock to the straight pole on back, we have two to interweave between the bike wheels and the pole. We also brought a locking pin for the hitch. Never had a problem, we have left them on there while down the shore, on bike trails while we walk or go to get something to eat. |
Question: | What kind of attachment do you need for a woman's bike |
Answer: | On the current version (2016 and newer) hitch racks, the carry arms are 11.5" apart on center. This translates to an outside dimension of approximately 13" |

Question: | Does it fit a 2009 passat sedan |

Question: | My A4 has a back window that extends below the trunk. Most bike racks put a lot of pressure on the glass. Will this bike rack work on a 1999 A |
Answer: | If its an Audi A4 4DR or Wagon the answer according to the manufacturer should be yes. Positions on the knob are as follows A4 4DR 6-6-6 Fit tip 101, 102, 138A4 Wagon 9-9-9 Fit tip 101, 102, 121, 128 |
Question: | Will this fit my 2011 honda crv |
Answer: | Hi, it should fit fine, however this works best in a sedan. For a smaller suv I would strongly recommend to add a trailer hitch (if you don’t have one) and buy a bike rack for a trailer hitch such as Thule Apex T4. That would be way safer for your crv. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Will this leave scratches on your car overtime due to constant setup and/or bumpy roads? I would use this atleast once a week |
Answer: | It has scratched both my 2009 Lexus 350 RX and my 2014 Subaru Outback. The scratches come from the coated metal things that secure the straps to the rear gate. There was no amount of tightening or adjusting that could prevent movement of two bikes on this carrier. I wish I had gotten a tow hitch type carrier setup instead. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Anybody try this on a 2006 Ford Escape? I'm having trouble tightening the bottom strap |
Answer: | Since no one has answered your question I'll take a shot at it. There may have a few causes for "... trouble tightening the bottom strap" assuming it means the rack is not snug, . Make sure the strap is threaded correctly through the buckle so it will grip, not slip when tightened and tie it off around the strap as further assurances it will not slip. The bottom strap may loosen up when the bike is put on the rack so either apply some downward force on the rack or put the bike on the rack before tightening the bottom strap. |
Question: | Will this fit my 2019 Toyota Camry sedan |
Answer: | Yes, as long it doesn’t have a foil. Go to Allen Sports web site look up theUltra Compact Folding 1 and it will show all vehicles that are compatible. |
Question: | if my bike weighs a little more than 35lb, around 38lb for example, will the rack work? will the pedal scratch my car |
Answer: | yes, I don't see the 3lbs as an issue at all. Install so the weight is evenly distributed. As far as the pedals, my bike does not scatch, the mount offsets the pedals. |
Question: | Are there any scratches resulting from this bike rack? I see there are metal hooks that hook the top of the trunk and underneath the... car? Thank you |
Answer: | The hooks are coated with a resin that seems like a semi-hard polyester. You can also put some electrical tape on them to soften the touch. I haven't had any scratching, but if I were driving my brand new $445,000 Lamborghini instead of my 10 year old $6000 Ford Escape, I might hesitate to use this rack. |

Answer: | Yes - I have the RX350 as well |
Question: | Would anyone happen to know if this would fit on a 2014 Hyundai Veloster |
Answer: | On the trunk: not long. Like a minute. |
Question: | Will it fit a 2008 Toyota Prius |
Answer: | I once attached this model to my friend's Prius. I'm not sure the model is designed for a Prius, but it held 2 bikes for around 40 miles without a problem. |
Question: | will this fit a honda odyssey |
Answer: | I have a female bike, not a cruiser, a mountain bike, and mine fits fine. You do have to angle it just right and it sits on the rack at an angle, but it has never been a problem for me and I feel like my bike rides securely. I have even used it going down the interstate and never felt like it wasn't secure. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this rack fit at 2013 honda cr-v ex-l |
Answer: | Yes, our latest generation Trail Rider rack like the one here, now comes with a locking threaded hitch pin. |
Question: | I have a 2013 Lexis RX350 with factory installed cross bars. Which bike rack can I use to carry 1 or 2 bikes |
Answer: | Do the bikes sway or is it the whole assembly bouncing? I've noticed the bikes move as the whole rack bounces while driving. But not had just a bike swaying. I drove 2300 miles with my bike on the rack bouncing over bumps. Had no problem or concerns about it falling off. |
Question: | Will this fit a 2012 honda fit? How do i find out for sure |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry. The distance from the center of the hitch pin to the first hook is 11".You will need to measure from the center of your pin to the outside of the tire (use a plum line or similar) to see if that distance is less than 11".If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to let us know. |
Question: | Can I fit 4 bikes |
Answer: | I can open my Honda Civic's trunk with the bikes on. The post can be lowered away from the trunk without the bikes on for even easier access. |

The Spoiler Solution
Most newer SUV's, Minivan's and Hatchback's have a wind deflecting spoiler over the back window in order to increase fuel efficiency. Our patented technology prevents the bike racks straps and frame from making any contact with these (mostly carbon and plastic spoilers) by going above the spoiler and attaching to either roof rails, the seam of the trunk or using anchors inside the vehicle.
Versatility at its best
The adjustable high rise frame allows the rack to be used with nearly any SUV, Minivan, Hatchback or Sedan.
Limited Lifetime Warranty
Protected by our Limited Lifetime Warranty policy on manufacturer defects.
Standard Hooks
Use the standard rubber coated hooks used on all of our trunk racks to attach the top straps to the rear trunks top seam.
Roof Rail Attachments
For vehicles with bars on top, the upper attachment straps can easily attach to the load bars by swapping the standard hooks with the included rail straps.
Hatch Anchors
For vehicles that cannot use the standard hooks and don't have load bars, these anchors can be used with the quick connection straps. The anchors can also be used for the side or bottom straps.
