12 best jeep wrangler spare tire bike rack
The Jeep Wrangler spare tire bike rack is a specific type of bike rack designed to be mounted on the spare tire of a Jeep Wrangler. It's a popular choice among Jeep owners who want to transport bicycles on their vehicles without the need for a separate hitch or roof rack. Here are some key points about Jeep Wrangler spare tire bike racks:
Design: These bike racks are designed to attach securely to the spare tire of a Jeep Wrangler. They typically consist of a frame or cradle that holds the bicycles in place, along with straps or other fasteners to ensure a stable and secure attachment.
Compatibility: Jeep Wrangler spare tire bike racks are made to fit the unique spare tire mount found on Jeep Wrangler models. It's essential to ensure that the rack you choose is compatible with your specific Jeep Wrangler model year and tire size.
Capacity: These racks come in various sizes and configurations, allowing you to transport one or more bikes. Some racks can hold two bikes, while others can accommodate more, depending on the model.
Installation: Installation is relatively straightforward and typically does not require any special tools. You'll need to secure the rack to the spare tire and adjust the straps to hold your bikes securely.
Security: Many Jeep Wrangler spare tire bike racks come with locking mechanisms or the option to add locks to help prevent theft of your bikes.
Foldability: Some models offer a foldable design, making it easier to access the rear of your Jeep when the bikes are not loaded.
Price Range: The price of these bike racks can vary significantly depending on the brand, features, and capacity. Entry-level models may be more affordable, while premium options with additional features may come at a higher price point.
Brand Options: Various manufacturers produce spare tire bike racks compatible with Jeep Wranglers. Some well-known brands in this category include Thule, Yakima, Allen Sports, and more.
When selecting a Jeep Wrangler spare tire bike rack, it's crucial to consider factors such as compatibility with your vehicle, the number of bikes you plan to transport, ease of installation, and any additional features you may need. Additionally, reading product reviews and seeking recommendations from fellow Jeep owners can help you make an informed decision about which bike rack is best for your needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used on toyota fj cruiser |
Answer: | Bought this for my FJ cruiser. It fit and seemed to be securely on it. But the whole thing popped off the car while on the road, even with an additional lock on it. (It also covers the reverse sensor so the FJ alarm will trigger whenever backing up.) If you end up buying this, look at the flimsy clips that are suppose to hold onto the bottom of the back door. Even with the door closed, the FJ's doorframe will not help keep those little clips in place. |
Question: | Does it fit on 2016 jeep wrangler |
Answer: | It fits on the stock spare tire and at least up to a 33". I haven't tried it on a 35". |
Question: | Would this work well on the back of a Jeep Wrangler |
Answer: | Yes it works on Jeep Wranglers. I have a 2015 Jeep Wrangler, only thing I did different was instead of attaching the straps to the bumper I adjusted the bike rack to fit just to the spare tire in order to be able open the back. |
Question: | What if it has a covered spare tire on the back? I own a 2006 Toyota Rav |
Answer: | I have a thin cover on my tire, an elastic band one and it fit right over it with no problem. I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are there longer straps I can purchase for this bike rack? The ones it came with won’t go around my bike frame |
Answer: | Dear Customer, Sorry to hear that as the straps included are suitable for most bikes. We have included spare straps in the package but there is no longer straps available. Thanks for your inquiry. |
Question: | What is the biggest tire this will fit? I have 35” for a spare tire |
Answer: | I don’t think the tire size matters. It connects to the Jeep using a bolt thru center of the spare. We had to purchase our own bolt as the two sizes of connectors provided would not pull the rubber braces onto our tire. Now that it’s all hooked up I’m surprised by its durability. Bikes don’t wiggle about like on our hitch bike rack. |
Question: | I purchased this item, and it didnt come with instructions to install. Is there a website that i can download them from |
Answer: | Dear Customer, Yes digital instruction is available. Please contact us for it directly through amazon message. Thanks for your inquiry. |
Question: | Will this fit if you have the rear camera on your Jeep spare tire? Some racks will not work if you have the camera |
Answer: | Nope. You’ve got to feed part of the rack through the center of the tire. I just got a 2020 Jeep and can’t use this rack anymore. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a 2019 rubicon 4 doors with rear camera does it fit |
Answer: | Thanks for checking with Thule. Regretfully not with the Rear Camera. |
Question: | How does this carrier adjust for an off-center spare tire? The center of my spare tire sits about 5 inches to the right of center |
Answer: | Yes, it does adjust for off center spare tire, but if the spare tire is not that much off center, I found out that it is better to just change the direction the way my bike faces to achieve optimal centering. I have a 2008 Toyota RAV4 with a spare tire that sits just a bit off center. I found out that if you shift the carrier itself to try to compensate for the off center spare tire the bike was not as centered as I wanted, rather I kept the carrier centered on the spare tire and I just changed the direction the way the way the bike was positioned. |
Question: | Does anyone know if this might work with a 2004 Honda CRV? Thanks |
Answer: | I found these reviews on Thule's website, regarding the 2001 and 2002 CRVs. I have a 2005 CRV, and this appears to be our best option for a bike rack. I am concerned about the off-center wheel though - http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/spare-tire-bike-carriers/thule-spare-met-963pro-_-963pro |
Question: | I have a Jeep Wrangler with oversized spare tire that is 33"x12.5" wide will the rack accomodate for that extra depth |
Answer: | I have the exact same set up -- '13 Wrangler w/ 33" x 12.5" Hercules Trail Diggers -- and I use this rack. I like it. Don't listen to this person saying "yes, but it will only carry one bike." It carries two and that statement doesn't make any sense. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fit on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler |
Answer: | The tire stabilizes the bike so I think it is necessary. |
Question: | From pics shown, it appears the rack arms may obstruct brake light (at top of Jeep spare tire mount) when folded in. Is this the case |
Answer: | Yes it folds down, i wish i could show you a pic of it. I keep it on my jeep at all times and fold it down when i'm not using it. You can even take it through a car wish with it down. |
Question: | Will this fit a 2003 land rover discovery bolt pattern |
Answer: | It should work on any car with a spare tire on the rear door |
Question: | Can someone recommend a lock for the bike itself and the bikes front tire |
Answer: | It fits right onto the spare tire. Very easy to install. |
Question: | On a 2013 jk, will the bike carrier work with no tire on the tailgate spare holder bracket? or, does the tire need to be on the jeep to work |
Answer: | I mounted mine without the support straps and it does fine for two road bikes. This is mounted on an RV so no off roading with the bikes on the rack to report. The locking hub is a poor design. Mine would lock but not unlock. With a lot of futzing I finally got it to unlock. Once I had it in the unlock position, I unscrewed the long screw from it and used that to mount the tire rack to the spare tire mounting plate with a nut and washer. In a roadside emergency if I would need to access the spare and couldn’t because the bike rack unlock position in the hub wouldn’t work ... well this was not acceptable risk for me. Yeah someone could steal the rack I suppose without the locking hub but that was an acceptable trade-off to not being able to access the spare in an emergency. Otherwise the bike rack is fine. The manufacturer needs a better design for the locking hub. |
Question: | The description says it doesn’t fold down when not using. Some comments says it does. Can someone that has ordered this one confirm |
Answer: | It’s super easy to lock and unlock with the key. This bike rack is 200 and some dollars cheaper than the Thule one. I love this rack. We used it alot |
Question: | Do you know if it works for an honda cvr |
Answer: | Sure. However the key lock that comes with it is crap. It jammed and I couldn’t unlock it with the key provided. I had to take a hacksaw and cut it off. This is important because if you need to get to the spare in an emergency roadside flat repair DO NOT rely on the key working properly. After I cut the lock off I use a cable and a lock to secure my bikes on the rack. I wouldn’t recommend this product. |
Question: | How does it mount onto my jeep? I see the knob in the pic but cant tell anything else, I will have a 24" and 26" cruiser bike on there |
Answer: | Yes. After you put the long piece on the back of the tire you were still able to use your tire cover over it, all you’ll have to do is when you want to use it remove the tire cover and put the rack on and lock it it |

Question: | will it fit 315/70R17 , rim depth 8.5inch |
Answer: | Some women's bikes have a dropped down top tube which would make it hang crochet.Doug |
Question: | Will it fit on a 2005 toyota rav |
Answer: | I don't remember the exact weight limit for them, but we have two in our garage. One holds two kids bikes and one holds two adult bikes with no problem. One thing I would recommend is using a heavier duty screw that is a little longer than the ones that come with the rack. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be tilted with the bikes loaded |
Answer: | I purchased the 4 bike version and even by itself, it is extremely heavy. It is made out of steel and not aluminum. If the bikes were loaded and you trigger the tilt, it would be very difficult to raise back up. I would not recommend tilting the 4 bike version fully loaded. I presume the two bike version is lighter of its own accord and then it is the weight of the bikes... |
Question: | how wide is the rack? it looks like it sticks out past the edges of the car and cant be folded when not in use |
Answer: | My rack measures 70 inches for my bike length. The wheel frames cannot be folded up. The rack can be shortened to 56 inches when not in use by sliding the wheel frames in. |
Question: | Will regular road bikes with narrower tires work on this rack |
Answer: | Of course this is a great rack. I personally have a ebike and a mountain bike that both have 2.5 inch wide tires but I've hauled a friends road bike and there's no movement or bouncing. To whom it may concern this is a yes or no question. Might or might not doesn't work for this question. If you haven't hauled a road bike then please don't guess. |
Question: | Will this car bike rack rust |
Answer: | I have no idea, but you can buy a Hiroumer bike cover which will protect your bike and your car bike rack well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this clear the spare tire on a Jeep Wrangler |
Answer: | This rack has a 1/2" hole for the pin. Lots of hitches have 5/8" holes/pins. You can use the "no-wobble" pin that they include (which is partly 1/2" and partly 5/8"), but then you need tools to put on/take off which is annoying. If you want to use an after-market key-locking trailer pin, you will likely have to drill out this bike rack's pin hole to 5/8" first. Not a great design choice in my opinion. |
Question: | Can you use 5/8 hitch lock pin |
Answer: | The brackets that the straps are attached to rotate around the rack arms, making it fairly easy once you figure out the best position. I actually had 3 women's bikes on the rack with no problems. The straps were on the diagonal bar and the vertical bar below the seat and it was very tight, no movement at all. No issues with women's bikes at all here. |
Question: | Is there a locking mechanism to prevent theft of the actual hitch / rack when not using the rack? A special key to keep it on your hitch |
Answer: | If you are talking about leaving the bikes, we purchased the doberman lock and secured the bikes and lock to the straight pole on back, we have two to interweave between the bike wheels and the pole. We also brought a locking pin for the hitch. Never had a problem, we have left them on there while down the shore, on bike trails while we walk or go to get something to eat. |
Question: | Do the cradles rotate |
Answer: | On the current version (2016 and newer) hitch racks, the carry arms are 11.5" apart on center. This translates to an outside dimension of approximately 13" |
