If you're sitting in it, you won't flip backwards; your weight will hold the chair in place comfortably. We've noticed that you might want to position the chair with a bit of the seat area hanging over whatever bench you're sitting on. As for a picnic table, it worked just fine for me. We forgot to take our chairs to a football game recently and were very disappointed not to have them with us!
