14 best carbide routers
Carbide routers, also known as carbide router bits, are essential tools in woodworking and machining. They are designed for use with routers, which are power tools used to hollow out or shape various materials, including wood, plastic, and metal. Carbide router bits are known for their durability and cutting precision. Here's what you need to know about them, especially in relation to straight spiral trim bits and power tool accessories:
Material Composition: Carbide router bits are made from high-quality tungsten carbide. Tungsten carbide is a hard and wear-resistant material that allows these bits to maintain their sharp cutting edges even after prolonged use.
Types of Router Bits: There are various types of router bits, each designed for specific tasks. Straight spiral trim bits, for instance, are a subset of router bits used for making straight cuts and trimming edges. These bits are ideal for tasks like flush trimming laminate or edging.
Cutting Edge Geometry: Carbide router bits come in different cutting edge geometries, including straight, spiral, and helical. The choice of bit depends on the specific application and desired outcome.
Durability: Carbide router bits are renowned for their longevity. The tungsten carbide tips are extremely hard and can withstand the high-speed rotation and friction generated by the router, making them suitable for heavy-duty tasks.
Versatility: Carbide router bits can be used with a wide range of materials, including hardwood, softwood, plywood, MDF, plastic, and some metals. This versatility makes them indispensable tools in woodworking shops and manufacturing facilities.
Router Compatibility: It's important to ensure that the router bit you choose is compatible with your router model. Router bits come in various shank sizes (e.g., 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch), and routers have corresponding collets to accommodate these sizes.
Router Speed: The speed at which a carbide router bit should operate depends on the type of material being cut and the bit's diameter. Guidelines for the optimal speed are usually provided by the bit manufacturer and should be followed for safety and efficiency.
Safety Precautions: When using carbide router bits, safety precautions are essential. Users should wear appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses and hearing protection. Additionally, router bits should be properly secured in the router's collet to prevent accidents.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, including cleaning and sharpening, can extend the lifespan of carbide router bits. Cleaning removes built-up residue, and sharpening ensures that the cutting edges remain sharp for clean and precise cuts.
Bit Storage: Proper storage is crucial to prevent damage to the carbide tips. Router bits should be stored in a dry and clean environment to avoid corrosion and maintain their cutting performance.
In summary, carbide routers, including straight spiral trim bits, are indispensable tools in woodworking and machining.Their durable tungsten carbide construction, precision cutting, and versatility make them suitable for a wide range of applications. Proper use and maintenance of these tools are essential for achieving clean and precise cuts and ensuring their longevity.

Question: | where are Hiltex router bits manufactured |
Answer: | Question to your question: why does it matter? These are router bits. "China" does not produce inferior products. Production facilities produce products based on standards typically outlined and selected by the company. If cost is the sole driver, the product will likely not be at the top of its class. Yes, there are still sweatshops in China, but there are also highly advanced manufacturing facilities as well. Just saying. |
Question: | do these router bits work with the black & decker matrix router attachment |
Answer: | Yes they do. I purchased them for the exact same reason and they fit and work very well. Very pleased with this purchase. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why doesn't the bit i received from this ad have the whiteside logo and part number etched into the shank like every other whiteside bit i have |
Answer: | Who did you purchase it from? Was it in a whiteside envelope? |
Question: | What is the shank dimension? is it 1/4" or |
Answer: | This bit has a 1/4" shank. For a complete description of any Whiteside product and a picture, please visit our Amazon showroom or visit our eoasaw website. In general, bits 1/4" and under have a 1/4" shank. Please advise how we may be of assistance. Thanks, Thom |
Question: | Would this bit be used to cut cirlces in plywood |
Answer: | Whiteside carbide bit is very high quality. Good clean cuts in plywood. Yes I use this bit to cut circles. |
Question: | will this bit cut a 1/4" recess in a 3/4" red oak board |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this cut aluminum? I'm taking the aluminum fins out of a window frame for a vinyl retrofit |
Answer: | I have not used my bit on any material other than wood. I can say that the flutes are sharp enough to cut a thin aluminum, but at the speed of a router, I would be afraid of leaving a very ragged, torn up edge on the aluminum!!! |
Question: | What are Up Cut Bits best used for |
Answer: | I use this bit exclusively for template/pattern cutting. I have made several guitar bodies and all have come out perfect! This spiral bit has zero tear out if you can cut close to your layout line before using it with the template!!!!! |
Question: | At what rpms do you run this bit |
Answer: | Start at 18000. If the bit is getting hot or you are not getting a chip, decrease the RPM. You are looking for the biggest chipload possible. The chip removes the heat, the heat burns off the cobalt binder and dulls the bit. At the proper feed and speed the bit should be at or near room temperature after cutting. Feel free to download my free CNC manual at our EOASAW website under technical - the principles are the same for any cutting situation including hand routing. Please let me know how I may be of further assistance Thanks Thom |
User questions & answers
Question: | So it is 3/16" for dremel trio |
Answer: | These work in a 1/8" collet. |
Question: | what size collett will this bit require |
Answer: | Most routers have 1/4“ and or 1/2” Collets. So the answer is likely that it won’t fit as is. There are reducers from 1/4” to 1/8” that can be utilized and make this work in your router. |
Question: | Will these work/fit the dewalt hand router |
Answer: | depends on how fast your feed rate is how fast your spindle is and the depth of cut you will do. you can use these in a trim router if you have the collet that will take an 1/8 inch bit. |
Question: | can you use these bits to make signs and will they work in a 1/4 palm router |
Answer: | The hole in the center is very small and shallow. It is .07" in diameter. It is not a pilot hole. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If used in router table, which is better upcut or down cut? spiral bits that is |
Answer: | In a router table, the directions are reversed. A down cut bit will drive chips up into the dado. An upcut will drive chips down toward the shank. So, if you're cutting a dado on a router table, you want an upcut bit to avoid clogging up the dado. The down cut bit will leave a smoother edge on the bottom surface of the work piece. See this article: https://www.woodcraft.com/blog_entries/spiral-router-bits-vs-straight-router-bits |
Question: | If used in router table, which is better upcut or down cut? spiral bits that is |
Answer: | Not too sure. We use this in a pocket hole machine to make the pocket for the screw. I don't think this is something you would use in a router table to flush trim anything but I have been wrong before. |
Question: | Can anyone confirm that this bit is now made in China instead of Italy |
Answer: | nope, still made in Italy |
Question: | What is the cutting depth if the bit |
Answer: | Cutting depth is 1-1/4".Thank You |

Question: | Can the back cutter be removed to make "proud" panels |
Answer: | Yes. The cutter and bearing is removable in case the bearing ever has to be replaced |
Question: | how sharp are these router bits because bought wants from other company and there where burning the wood |
Answer: | I am happy with mine. I don't think there is a set that won't burn the wood if you take to big of bit into the wood. My last cut I only take 1/64 to 1/32 of a cut and I never have burn marks. |
Question: | How far does the rails protrude into the stiles? 3/8 or |
Answer: | 3/8 in. |
Question: | When I cut the edge of the Stiles it cut a rectangular groove instead of a mirror pattern of the rails. so in the corners of my frames there is a gap |
Answer: | I would need to see a picture of the set of cutter to understand what you mean. Cutting the stiles and rails should give the same pattern. Remember you have to cut the end of the rail first before you do anything else. |

Product description
Spiral bits provide a shear cutting edge that leaves a smoother cut than standard router bits. The down cut spiral design provides the best top surface edges, ejecting chips away from the router when routing through material. This design also decreases the tendency to lift thin/small work pieces during CNC routing.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these bits still made in usa? the last one i purchased had the "made in usa" covered with a white patch on the plastic storage pouch |
Answer: | These bits are still made in the same factory with the same people and the same materials. Because they get bearings and some other materials from overseas they were told by the FTC that could no longer make a blanket claim of made in the USA. There have been no changes other than that. |
Question: | Do you use this bit in a router or a router table |
Answer: | I've used it both ways. you just have to remember that the feed direction might be different due to the spiral. Also, downcut bits have a tendency to push the router away from the work, so you need to be sure to hold the work down when using a router table, or hold the router down tight when using the router hand held. Downcut bits are best to use when you need a clean cut with no splinters on the surface of the wood. If you don't need a clean cut use an upcut bit because the can make deeper cuts and the bit tends to pull the router towards the wood making for smoother bottoms. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What are Down Cut Bits best used for |
Answer: | DOWN CUT: When you want a clean TOP surface. (slower cutting speeds than up cut) UP CUT: When you want a BOTTOM surface. COMPRESSION: When you want BOTH top & bottom to be clean. |
Question: | do we need a down cut the when we need a up cut bit |
Answer: | A down cut bit gives you a clean cut on the top of the material it may tear out on the bottom, this bid is frequently used for dadoes, rabbits Etc for this reason . The up cut bit will give you a clean cut on the bottom but may tear out on the top. Use a compression bit get a clean cut on both sides. For a more complete discussion, please feel free to download my CNC manual from our eoasaw website. The principles are the same for any cutting situation. Please advise how we may be of assistance. Thanks, Thom |
