12 best roofing nails

Roofing nails are specialized nails designed for use in roofing applications, and they are essential components in securing roofing materials to the roof's surface. Here is some information about roofing nails:

  1. Materials: Roofing nails are typically made from various materials, including galvanized steel, stainless steel, or aluminum. Galvanized steel roofing nails are the most common choice due to their corrosion resistance, which helps prevent rust and deterioration over time.

  2. Head Types: Roofing nails come in different head types. The most common head types for roofing nails are large, flat heads. These heads provide a broad and secure surface for holding down roofing materials. They are designed to withstand the weight of the materials and any environmental stresses.

  3. Shaft Types: Roofing nails typically have a smooth shank or a twisted shank. Smooth-shank nails are easier to drive into the roofing material but may not provide as much holding power as twisted-shank nails, which have spiraling grooves along the shaft that create a stronger grip.

  4. Length and Gauge: The length and gauge (diameter) of roofing nails vary depending on the specific roofing material and application. Longer nails are used for thicker roofing materials, while shorter ones are used for thinner materials. Common lengths range from 1 inch to 3 inches, with larger diameters providing increased strength.

  5. Coatings: Many roofing nails are coated with special materials, such as zinc or other corrosion-resistant coatings, to enhance their durability and prevent rusting. This is particularly important because roofing nails are exposed to the elements and can be susceptible to moisture.

  6. Application: Roofing nails are primarily used to attach roofing materials like asphalt shingles, wooden shakes, or metal roofing panels to the roof deck. They are typically driven through the roofing material and into the roof deck or substrate, ensuring a secure and weatherproof installation.

  7. Roofing Tools: Roofing nails are typically installed using pneumatic nail guns or specialized roofing nailers, which make the installation process faster and more efficient. However, they can also be installed manually using a hammer.

  8. Roofing Standards: The selection of roofing nails should adhere to local building codes and manufacturer recommendations to ensure the roofing material's warranty remains valid and the roof remains structurally sound.

Proper selection and installation of roofing nails are crucial for the longevity and effectiveness of a roofing system. Using the right type, length, and gauge of roofing nail, along with appropriate techniques, helps ensure a secure and weather-resistant roof that can withstand various environmental conditions.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this nail for porter cable rn175b roofing nailer
Answer: The length of the CR3DGAL is 1-1/4" and the RN175B has a fastener range of 3/4" to 1-3/4" so it should work fine.
Question: Do people use 0 degree coil nails? My roofer told me he doesn't use the 15 degree nails. Maybe I misheard him
Answer: Most roofers use 15 degree coil nails. You didn't say why he said "he uses 0 degree coil nails". For asphalt shingles I only use 15 degree. For shaker type roofs I use either 15 or 0 degree with plastic inserts to keep splinters from flying back at me.
Question: Will the nails fit dewalt roofing nailer dwfp
Answer: Yes, the DWFP12658 uses nails in lengths of: 3/4" (19 mm) - 1-3/4" (44.5 mm).
Question: how many boxes would I need to redo my garage roof, about 25 squares of shingles
Answer: Most shingles come 3 bundles per square and 29 shingles per bundle with each shingle requiring at least 4 nails. So the math would say 3x25squares=75 bundles x 29 shingles=2175 shingles x 4 nails=8700 nails which I would increase by 20% for a total of 10,440 nails. Since a case contains 7200 nails, you will need two cases to complete the job and will have about a half of a case left over.

User questions & answers

Question: are these collated nails
Answer: Yes but they are for roofing, you need to use 11/2 nails for a fence.
Question: Would these nails work on Cedar Fencing
Answer: Made in China I used them for my storage building roof.
Question: where are these made
Answer: 1080. 9 coils containing 120 nails each.
Question: How many nail in box
Answer: It is going to be right at the 1" mark, so you will have over penetration. If you are going to insulate the roof itself rather than the ceiling, you should be OK. Also, if you really want great material to cover the sheathing before putting on the roofing material, use Titanium wrap rather than tyvek or black paper. It is so much better in so many ways, particularly because it really makes a great barrier and is not so slick that you can't stand on it. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this coil nailer shoot nails with a 3/8" head
Answer: Yes, the RN46-1 will shoot roofing nails with a 3/8" head...I think all standard roofing nails have a 3/8" head so any of them from 3/4" to 1 3/4" length should work fine... kd
Question: can this gun be used to nail hardie siding
Answer: I wouldn't. This gun can only shoot up to 1 3/4" roofing nails. If it were me, I'd get a siding gun and shoot some longer ring shank nails
Question: Is this new gun
Answer: Yes
Question: Does it come with any type of warranty besides the one that is being offered
Answer: I would check with the seller you plan to purchase from. It varies, depending on the seller. Some may offer 30-day warranties and others may only pass along manufacturer's warranty information.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a carrying case
Answer: No, sorry.
Question: What is the recommended coiled nail brand to use for no jam-ups
Answer: Though it’s true, not all coil nails are created the same, as long as they keep there form (don’t get crushed in you pouch or stuff thrown on top of the coil nail box in your truck) you should be more or less fine. The gun you use also makes a difference. I’ve had good success with Max, also bostich. They seem to jam far less and are somewhat easier to unjam than other brands I’ve used, like my dads ridged and porter cable. But remember no gun and no nail brand, even if both Top tier, will be completely jam free.
Question: What is the difference between this model and the CN445R model
Answer: MAX SuperRoofer is in its third generation - the latest tool is the MAX CN445R3. The CN445R and CN445R2 are older tools. dh
Question: Does it work for siding
Answer: Most siding guns accommodate a 2 1/4” nail. This gun will hold 3/4”-1 3/4” inch nail. Most hardie type siding requires 1 1/2” in stud so it would work for that type of siding. As far as vinyl it will nail flush and not leave the expansion gap required
