13 best infrared heat lamp for animals
An infrared heat lamp for animals is a specialized heating device used to provide a controlled and comfortable heat source for various types of animals, particularly reptiles and amphibians kept as pets in terrariums or vivariums. These lamps emit infrared radiation, which heats the animals and the surrounding environment without emitting visible light. Here's what you should know about infrared heat lamps for animals:
Infrared Heat Source: Infrared heat lamps produce heat by emitting infrared rays, which are not visible to the human eye but are sensed as warmth. This mimics the natural warmth provided by the sun, making it suitable for cold-blooded reptiles and amphibians.
Terrarium and Vivarium Use: These lamps are commonly used in terrariums and vivariums to create temperature gradients within the enclosure. Different species of reptiles and amphibians have specific temperature requirements, and infrared heat lamps help maintain the necessary warmth for their well-being.
Non-Disruptive Lighting: Infrared heat lamps are designed to provide heat without disturbing the day-night cycles of animals. Unlike regular heat lamps or basking bulbs, they do not emit visible light, making them ideal for nocturnal or light-sensitive animals.
Adjustable Temperature: Infrared heat lamps can be used in conjunction with thermostats to control and maintain precise temperature levels within the enclosure. This allows pet owners to create thermal gradients that suit the needs of their animals.
Types of Animals: Infrared heat lamps are commonly used for reptiles and amphibians such as snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, and other cold-blooded creatures. Different species have varying temperature requirements, so it's crucial to research and provide the appropriate heat levels.
Safety Measures: When using infrared heat lamps, it's essential to ensure they are securely mounted to prevent accidental falls or contact with the animals. It's also vital to monitor and maintain proper humidity levels in the enclosure.
Regular Replacement: Infrared heat lamps, like other types of bulbs, have a limited lifespan. It's important to replace them according to the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure consistent and safe heating.
Wavelength Control: Some advanced infrared heat lamps allow for control over the wavelength of infrared radiation emitted. This can be beneficial for animals that require specific wavelengths for their health and well-being.
Energy Efficiency: Infrared heat lamps are generally energy-efficient and cost-effective to operate, making them a practical choice for maintaining the warmth of reptile and amphibian enclosures.
In conclusion, infrared heat lamps for animals are essential tools for maintaining the proper temperature in terrariums and vivariums, especially for reptiles and amphibians. They provide a safe and non-disruptive heat source that mimics natural conditions, ensuring the well-being and comfort of these cold-blooded pets. Proper care and monitoring are crucial when using these lamps to create a suitable environment for your animals.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this be compatible with a fuller lamp with a dimmer |
Answer: | I've never tried that but I use a base board thermostat so it cycles off and on to maintain the desired heat. |
Question: | how much heat does the 60 watt produce at |
Answer: | Not exact however would be pretty hot. Enough to possibly burn something |
Question: | Does anyone know the difference between the black and white ceramic bulbs |
Answer: | I've noticed no difference between the two. The amount of heat put out is more in the wattage and not the color of the ceramic. I've used 60W, 75W & 100W for my baby chicks and ducks, depending on the size of the tub and age of the bird. |
Question: | Does anyone know how high of a temp does 60w emit |
Answer: | I haven't measured the exact temperature, but know that it gets hot enough to melt a thick vinyl hose completely in half inside my beer fermenting freezer. I would guess it would be hot enough to give one a good burn if you touched it while it was on. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I need heat not light, are these true infra_red bulbs |
Answer: | These lights are great for heating animals. Keep my dog warm outside all winter long |
Question: | would these lights be ok to use in a small house crawl space? For keeping pipes from freezing and helping with heat cost |
Answer: | I use it for a heat source for animals but it does raise my light bill. Not sure of the safety factor in a crawl space |
Question: | What type of lamp is safe for these heat bulbs |
Answer: | I used a metal shrouded assembly that has a ceramic socket surround, but anything not too heat sensitive or flammable should be fine. The bulb itself doesn't seem to get hotter than say a 100w filament bulb at the base, so anything for higher wattage applications should be safe. |
Question: | How long does it take to heat up and generate heat? Looking to put on motion light for an open dog kennel |
Answer: | It heats up right away. But we use it in our garage where we have a dog house for her. I don't know how well it would work in an open space. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for my outdoor sulcata tortoise? he has a rancho/hut usually use a red heat bulb |
Answer: | I think it will. It emits infrared heat but from elements rather than a bulb. They come in several different sizes so, depending on how cold it gets in your area, you can use a high wattage or low wattage. I live in Colorado and use it in my chicken coop. I use the large one and it cranks out about the same amount of heat that the bulb does. The only glitch is you don't know if it's working or not but I have had mine for a couple years with no problems. Of course, I only use it in the winter but I used to go through several bulbs each winter. |
Question: | Does this put off any light, even red light |
Answer: | This kind of heater does no light emitted,it would not disturb normal sleeping habits of reptiles. |
Question: | I got one from here, how long does it take to heat up |
Answer: | Heat lamp immediately produces heat. I have 20 gallon turrarium and this lamp wouldn’t warm it up more than low 80’s with my house around 70 degrees. I replaced this lamp with a 150w which works way better. |
Question: | would this be ok with a Crested gecko? my room is around 45 to 50 degrees |
Answer: | This power is just right for the temperature you need. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a large parakeet cage with about 25 birds, would this be too much heat for them? I cover the cage with a large tarp at night |
Answer: | If you are referring to the 75 Watt bulb, No, this would not be too hot. The temperature is regulated by the distance from the bulb. This IS NOT an "Area Heater". It doesn't heat a large area. Rather, it makes a circular "Warm Spot" under the bulb, rather than heating the air. Hang the bulb OUTSIDE of the cage, (Preferably above,) AT LEAST 12" above the nearest perch. If you place this bulb centered on the cage the birds can move to or away from the warm spot, according to their preference. DO NOT PLACE INSIDE CAGE! The bulb gets VERY hot, and contact can cause severe burns. Be advised, birds can take fairly cold weather. What they CAN'T stand is a cold breeze, or cold, wet weather, so by all means, keep them covered from rain, snow, and cold winds. |
Question: | I have a red ear slider turtle, which is better for night use the 75 W or 50W? Thanks |
Answer: | 50W will be cooler, and 75W will be warmer. I don't know what slider turtles need, so suggest start with the warmer 75W lamp, and watch if your turtle gets up close to it, or if she stays back from it. If she stays back, then either raise the lamp higher, or use the cooler 50W. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is there a difference in the black and white bulbs |
Answer: | Not really. Both emit the same amount of heat. It just boils down to your visual preference. |
Question: | How far does the heat reach? My boa's tank is 20 inches high. Will it heat that far down? Or how deep does the heat emit to read 90 some degrees |
Answer: | Yes. These things get so hot you could fry an egg on them. Your tank should be enclosed to contain the heat, yet still allow ventilation. Temperature and humidity are both very important for captive snakes. - past president and founder Southeastern Hot Herp Society |
Question: | Do these put out any light |
Answer: | No, these don't put any light. |
Question: | How much heat does this produce |
Answer: | I’m not sure an exact quantity, but it produces a decent amount of heat. I use it on my bearded dragon tank and one bulb easily gets his basking spot up to 95°. |

Question: | How do you assemble this |
Answer: | YES ALL SUPPLIES ARE THERE |
Question: | Okay so I just got a turtle and I bought this to help him stay warm but I have no clue how to use it can someone help |
Answer: | Any room has different temperatures depending on where in the room you wish to measure. Floor level is cooler than higher up. Temperature near the ceiling is warmer than near the floor. So it all depends on where you want to measure. I would say 1 is enough for any room. Just move it to where you want to know the temperature at that spot. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many amps does this heater pull |
Answer: | Actually it would pull less than 1 Amp. Even If you are plugging it into a standard 15 Amp circuit you should be more than fine. It doesn't draw a lot of power. Of you want to know the amps, you slimy divide the watts by the volts, in this case you would say 110v divided by 100w = . 9amps. Hope this helps! |
Question: | UL rated / certified? If not, any other safety ratings / certification? thnx |
Answer: | The answer is NO. A CE Certification is an EU standard that is a self-certification. It means that BYB certifies that their product meets EU standards. This does not meet UL standards, as UL certified means UL tested the item, not the manufacturer. So in the workplace, CE certified items are NOT OSHA approved. If it's a home use, it comes down to whether you trust the manufacturer to be telling the truth. You can tell from the manufacturer's language, though having pretty good English, it's not great. And trying to figure out the country BYB is headquartered in is nigh impossible. However, they do produce the CREE brand of lights, which in my experience are of mid to high quality. Their reviews are always good, and I find them to be trustworthy products, even if their customer service can't manage to answer questions in an honest straightforward manner. |
Question: | Are they dimmable |
Answer: | That is an excellent question. I did not see anything about it being dimmable on the packing. But I have broken one and after seeing how they are made with a filament made into the ceramic, I would think that it probably would be. I'd say for no more than they cost, it would certainly be worth a try. As a reminder, they are very fragile and will break easily if hit against a hard surface. As long as you don't break them, they work very well. I found that all the birds brooded under these bulbs did much better than ones brooded with a light bulb. |
Question: | Would this heat a 56 1/2 by 21 inch hedgehog cage safely? I've heard people say it gets too hot |
Answer: | My hedgehog cage is 28" long X 16" wide X 12" height and it works perfectly fine...keeps the hedgehog cage between 75-80 degrees. We cut the top put wire mesh over the top and zip tied the heat lamp to it. |
