13 best heat light for chickens

Heat lamps for chickens are essential equipment used to provide supplemental warmth to poultry, especially during cold weather or when raising young chicks. These heat lamps are commonly used in chicken coops, brooders, or rearing areas to help maintain the appropriate temperature for the comfort and health of chickens.

Here are some key points about heat lamps for chickens:

  1. Temperature Control: Heat lamps are designed to emit a consistent source of heat, helping to maintain a stable and comfortable temperature within the chicken enclosure. This is crucial for keeping chickens warm, particularly during the cooler months.

  2. Chick Rearing: Heat lamps are often used in brooders, which are specially designed enclosures for raising baby chicks. Young chicks require a warmer environment than adult chickens, and heat lamps are used to mimic the warmth provided by a mother hen. The lamp should be positioned at an appropriate height to maintain the desired temperature in the brooder.

  3. Safety: Safety is a critical consideration when using heat lamps for chickens. To prevent fires and injuries, it's essential to secure the lamp correctly, use appropriate heat-resistant fixtures and bulbs, and position the lamp so that it cannot come into contact with bedding, feathers, or other flammable materials.

  4. Bulb Types: Heat lamps typically use incandescent or infrared heat bulbs. Infrared bulbs are often preferred because they emit heat without producing bright light, which can disrupt the chickens' natural day-night cycle.

  5. Hanging Setup: Heat lamps are typically suspended from the ceiling of the coop or brooder using adjustable fixtures and chains. This allows you to control the height of the lamp to regulate the temperature effectively.

  6. Thermostats: Some heat lamps can be used in conjunction with thermostats to maintain a specific temperature range automatically. This ensures that the chickens are neither too hot nor too cold.

  7. Regular Inspection: It's important to regularly inspect heat lamps and their associated components for signs of wear or damage. Replace bulbs as needed, and ensure that the lamp and its wiring are in good condition to prevent safety hazards.

Heat lamps for chickens play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being and comfort of poultry, particularly in colder climates or when raising chicks. Proper use and maintenance are essential to keep chickens healthy and safe.

User questions & answers

Question: I need heat not light, are these true infra_red bulbs
Answer: These lights are great for heating animals. Keep my dog warm outside all winter long
Question: would these lights be ok to use in a small house crawl space? For keeping pipes from freezing and helping with heat cost
Answer: I use it for a heat source for animals but it does raise my light bill. Not sure of the safety factor in a crawl space
Question: What type of lamp is safe for these heat bulbs
Answer: I used a metal shrouded assembly that has a ceramic socket surround, but anything not too heat sensitive or flammable should be fine. The bulb itself doesn't seem to get hotter than say a 100w filament bulb at the base, so anything for higher wattage applications should be safe.
Question: How long does it take to heat up and generate heat? Looking to put on motion light for an open dog kennel
Answer: It heats up right away. But we use it in our garage where we have a dog house for her. I don't know how well it would work in an open space.

User questions & answers

Question: What material is the reflection portion
Answer: The reflector is made of aluminum. It is very thin and prone to damage--if you drop this you will dent it.
Question: Us electricity is 110. this says 120. will it work with a near infrared therabulb rated 250 watts with a standard us e 26 socket
Answer: Yes, I use it just plugged into the standard USA outlet in the wall and have used both the TheraBulb NIR-A Near Infrared Bulb - 250 Watt that mention its designed to emit optimal NIR healing wavelengths of 700 to 1200 nanometers. I've also tried successfully with the cheaper Philips Heat Lamp R40 Flood Light Bulb: 250-Watt which is also a infrared bulb.
Question: Would this be safe to put inside a doghouse
Answer: I would say no. I use it with infrared bulbs for the light therapy and I don't find these to be very good at all. The clamps do not work well like to dangle and hang. I am not able to direct them where I want because the clips are lousy, but even if they worked well I'm not sure this'll be a good set up for doghouse - in my opinion. I'm not sure it would be safe. The dog could still touch the light and get burnt.
Question: It says 300wat and 250 wat which is it? And i will be using cfl bulbs
Answer: You can use up to a 300 watt red infrared bulb in it. I use mine with a 250 Watt infrared bulb and it works fine. Hope that helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on a cover porch while withstanding well below zero temperatures? (Minnesota
Answer: Small green house
Question: Can I use this in an overhead bathroom vent/ light, to keep the bathroom warm
Answer: I use it for that purpose and the light is about a foot above my head when I step out of the shower and I can feel it pretty decently. It doesn’t heat the room but directly below it has a warmer feel. I have no regrets on choosing this one for that.
Question: I put this in my ceiling over my shower and it cuts off after about 10 minutes, is it supposed to do that or is that a bad sign like it's overheating
Answer: if installed in a recess can there are thermal cut offs inside tp prevent overheating and or a potential fire hazard.
Question: is this near infrared heat
Answer: The seller sent me a bulb that was NOT made by Pyramid. TWICE. The best bulb of this type on the market is made by RUBYLUX. It is expensive, but most all others are made with a red coating that is toxic, or a teflon anti shatter coating that is toxic. Toxic meaning the extreme heat of the 250 Watt bulb causes off gassing. good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this inside my chicken coop? we have baby chicks and want to use inside small chicken coop (separate from the hens
Answer: Yes, it can be used in a small coop, that’s how I used it. I also had a temperature gauge to ensure the temperature was accurate, consistent and appropriate for the chicks during their growth process. I liked the ceramic heat lamp because it didn’t produce light at night time. I noticed the chicks slept through the night thoroughly, which I felt was really important. Our chicks are now at nine weeks, outside and doing really well. I may use the heat lamp again this winter in their outside coop if we get some severe cold. Hope this helps.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: China
Question: How far does the heat reach i have 36×18×36 enclosure
Answer: From a distance of 12 inches you will have about an 11 inch radius area hovering at about 90°. The farther away the less heat, and the closer the more heat, etc. I have two over a 75 gallon tank and they do great. Make sure you know what temperatures your creature should be at and always remember they don’t have to be perfect. Reptiles especially can adapt to many environments so the best thing to do is make sure that you keep it consistent! Good luck, and provide the best home you possibly can for your creatures!!
Question: will this fit a 5.5 inch heat lamp

User questions & answers

Question: Would this be sufficient enough to heat the inside of my car in the winter months
Answer: If you are asking about winter storage for your car to keep it from getting musty, that might work. Sort of like heat sticks for gun safes and pianos for the dampness. If your asking about living in your car, it wouldn't be warm enough for me.
Question: House for stray cats...does this heater need to be clear of all bedding? is there a chance of fire
Answer: I have mine in a cat house with towels and a cat bed around it. The towels touch it. It's uncomfortably hot to touch on high, but doesn't burn my hand so I felt it was safe. I've not had any issues with it so far.
Question: Do you have to worry about this being to close to the chickens? Do you have to mount it where they cant get to
Answer: The answer to both questions is No according to the instructions. I did place mine on a wall so the chickens don't poop on it. It sits just above their heads while roosting. It also heats objects. Also it will only heat to about 45 degrees which is the highest temp you want for chickens. If the chickens get too hot they move away from it. The panel is not hot but warm to the touch. I find it to be very safe easy to install. Haven't had -30 degree weather yet. It has been in the 20's here at night and I really do love the product. Safe for everyone.
Question: When will the built in thermastate turn on and shut off
Answer: I couldn’t find this information either so I emailed the company and asked. This is their reply “Thank you for your inquiry. The internal thermostat does not automatically shut the unit off or on; it only regulates the temperature of the unit to maintain 140F. The unit will ONLY shut off if it overheats to above 180F; this product must be manually turned on and off.”

User questions & answers

Question: Does it emit Far or Near infra red light? Or both
Answer: Neither. I called Phillips and the rep. told me it's not infrared. All these red lights on Amazon are not infrared. He pointed me towards this one https://www.amazon.com/Philips-145516-175-watt-PAR38-Clear/dp/B002CYW0AA
Question: What wavelength does this bulb emit
Answer: Heat lamps do not output a specific wavelength. They output everything from red at 650nm to 1100nm infrared. If you google incandescent heat lamp then click on images, you will see what the spectrum looks like. Hope that helps.
Question: why do you say it's infrared, when some say it is not, but it's just red color? any proof that it's actual infrared spectrum
Answer: A lot of ignorant comments.. it outputs in both infrared and visible light. Most of the output is in fact infrared. Infrared is any heat you feel radiating from the light at a distance. The heat you feel is infrared energy. Infrared = thermal light. The bulb also puts out some visible light in the red color spectrum so it’s not 100% infrared. (Infra-red means below red in the light spectrum.. which is not visible)
Question: Is this a Teflon-coated bulb
Answer: I called the Philips Company and asked specifically about this model bulb.I was informed that the company puts a silicon coating on some of their bulbs and that this bulb specifically has has no coating on it.There is a bulb that does have a coating, and it's number 159327.UPDATE:The bulb that I received appears to have a coating on it. Two reasons why:The coating can be smelled after it has run for a few minutes. When comparing with three other bulbs that do not have a coating on it, there is an mark that appears on the bulb I received that is missing on the other bulbs.comparison photo called philips-amazon-415836-comparison.jpg - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3EYYHNgU811clRneUk0dEZ3OFk/view?usp=sharing The box I received from this product has this information on it820915Ordering Code:250R40/HR 120V 4/1 TPI bought these bulbs from Home Depot, and they also had coating on them. For the use of an infrared sauna, any coating is not optimal. In the case of a bathroom, a coating would likely be optimal.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this be compatible with a fuller lamp with a dimmer
Answer: I've never tried that but I use a base board thermostat so it cycles off and on to maintain the desired heat.
Question: how much heat does the 60 watt produce at
Answer: Not exact however would be pretty hot. Enough to possibly burn something
Question: Does anyone know the difference between the black and white ceramic bulbs
Answer: I've noticed no difference between the two. The amount of heat put out is more in the wattage and not the color of the ceramic. I've used 60W, 75W & 100W for my baby chicks and ducks, depending on the size of the tub and age of the bird.
Question: Does anyone know how high of a temp does 60w emit
Answer: I haven't measured the exact temperature, but know that it gets hot enough to melt a thick vinyl hose completely in half inside my beer fermenting freezer. I would guess it would be hot enough to give one a good burn if you touched it while it was on.

Ceramic Heat Emitters are the perfect 24-hour heat source for all reptiles. These porcelain heating devices screw into a standard porcelain incandescent socket, giving off intense “muscle-penetrating” infrared heat, while emitting no light. User questions & answers

Question: How many amps does this heater pull
Answer: Actually it would pull less than 1 Amp. Even If you are plugging it into a standard 15 Amp circuit you should be more than fine. It doesn't draw a lot of power. Of you want to know the amps, you slimy divide the watts by the volts, in this case you would say 110v divided by 100w = . 9amps. Hope this helps!
Question: UL rated / certified? If not, any other safety ratings / certification? thnx
Answer: The answer is NO. A CE Certification is an EU standard that is a self-certification. It means that BYB certifies that their product meets EU standards. This does not meet UL standards, as UL certified means UL tested the item, not the manufacturer. So in the workplace, CE certified items are NOT OSHA approved. If it's a home use, it comes down to whether you trust the manufacturer to be telling the truth. You can tell from the manufacturer's language, though having pretty good English, it's not great. And trying to figure out the country BYB is headquartered in is nigh impossible. However, they do produce the CREE brand of lights, which in my experience are of mid to high quality. Their reviews are always good, and I find them to be trustworthy products, even if their customer service can't manage to answer questions in an honest straightforward manner.
Question: Are they dimmable
Answer: That is an excellent question. I did not see anything about it being dimmable on the packing. But I have broken one and after seeing how they are made with a filament made into the ceramic, I would think that it probably would be. I'd say for no more than they cost, it would certainly be worth a try. As a reminder, they are very fragile and will break easily if hit against a hard surface. As long as you don't break them, they work very well. I found that all the birds brooded under these bulbs did much better than ones brooded with a light bulb.
Question: Would this heat a 56 1/2 by 21 inch hedgehog cage safely? I've heard people say it gets too hot
Answer: My hedgehog cage is 28" long X 16" wide X 12" height and it works perfectly fine...keeps the hedgehog cage between 75-80 degrees. We cut the top put wire mesh over the top and zip tied the heat lamp to it.
