13 best bearded dragon light setup

Creating the right lighting setup for a bearded dragon's habitat is crucial for their health and well-being. Bearded dragons are reptiles that require specific lighting conditions to mimic their natural habitat. Here are the key components of a proper bearded dragon light setup:

  1. UVB Lighting: Bearded dragons need UVB (ultraviolet B) light to metabolize calcium and maintain healthy bones. UVB lighting should be provided by a fluorescent bulb designed for reptiles. These bulbs should be replaced every 6-12 months, as their UVB output diminishes over time.

  2. UVA Lighting: UVA (ultraviolet A) lighting is also important, as it helps stimulate natural behaviors and activity in bearded dragons. Full-spectrum lighting that includes UVA is ideal for creating a more natural environment.

  3. Basking Light: Bearded dragons are cold-blooded and rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. A basking light, usually in the form of a heat lamp or ceramic heat emitter, should be placed over a designated basking spot. This spot should reach temperatures between 95°F to 105°F (35°C to 40°C) to provide a warm area for your pet to thermoregulate.

  4. Daylight and Nighttime Lighting: Bearded dragons also benefit from a regular day and night cycle.Use a timer to simulate a 12-hour day and a 12-hour night, allowing your pet to have a natural lighting cycle.

  5. Light Placement: Proper placement of lights is essential. The UVB and UVA lighting should be positioned above the basking area to ensure that your bearded dragon receives these essential rays while it's basking. The basking light should be securely mounted to prevent burns or accidents.

  6. Light Intensity and Distance: Pay attention to the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the distance between the light source and your bearded dragon. UVB bulbs have a specific range at which they provide adequate UVB radiation, so it's important to position them correctly.

  7. Light Fixture: Use a fixture that can safely accommodate the type of bulbs you're using. Some fixtures come with reflectors to maximize the amount of light that reaches your pet.

  8. Regular Replacement: As mentioned earlier, UVB bulbs should be replaced at least every 6-12 months, even if they still emit visible light. After this time, their UVB output diminishes, which can lead to calcium deficiencies in your bearded dragon.

  9. Natural Sunlight: Whenever possible, allow your bearded dragon to bask in natural sunlight. However, ensure that they have access to shade to prevent overheating, and never leave them unattended outdoors.

  10. Lighting Schedule: Maintain a consistent lighting schedule to help your bearded dragon establish a routine. This can contribute to their overall well-being.

In summary, a proper lighting setup for a bearded dragon's habitat includes UVB and UVA lighting, a basking light, and a regular day-night cycle. Ensure that the lighting is correctly positioned and that you replace bulbs as needed to provide a healthy and comfortable environment for your pet.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a good light for a Bearded Dragon
Answer: Absolutely not. This uvb is improper and your dragon will end up with metabolic bone disease. You'll need a either a reptisun 10.0 or Arcadia 12-14% long uvb bulb.
Question: Can this be used over an aquatic turtle tank ?i bought this instead of the aquatic set
Answer: I’ve used it over aquatic turtles and it was fine. Just be sure to have it at least 12-15 inches above the water and use zip ties to hold it in place on the lamp stand you use to avoid it ever falling into the tank. I put mine on their basking rock side away from the filters so it was t at risk of splash back either.
Question: I purchased this light set up a month ago and the basking light already blew out. How do i contact seller to try to resolve this issue
Answer: Should be able too go back to your purchase history. Click on the product and from there you should see “contact seller “.
Question: with the light or without light

User questions & answers

Question: What size battery does it take
Answer: LR4 4G Button Cell
Question: How long of cord does it have
Answer: about 2 ft. is cord length.
Question: can you run a light 12/12 using this item
Answer: Yes, you can run it 12 on 12 off but you should know that when the blue sockets are on the yellow ones automatically switch off and visa versa.
Question: Can you set one set of ports from 7am to Midnight and the other from 10am until 8pm
Answer: I've had two of these for over 10 years, and one just began to act up, with an outlet no longer working at all. As others have said, the yellow outlets are for daytime settings, and function together as a unit; and the blue outlets are for nighttime settings, and function as a unit. Therefore, times are set for both yellow and both blue, and not individually. The white outlets are for "always on" devices; such as an under tank heater. It is a bit tricky to learn to set up, but once done, it works flawlessly and only needs adjusting for daylight savings time, if desired. I've never had mine blow a breaker, but if you have older wiring or your outlets, wiring and breakers are damaged, or not properly up to current code then it could blow a breaker. Also, it is as vulnerable to power surges as any other electronic device, and can be damaged by frequent blown-out. But that's true for any power strip without surge protection. And even surge protectors have to be replaced if hit with a string enough surge. It always best to unplug this device during a power outage, and consider a surge protector and battery backup if you experience frequent brown outs in your area. Moreover, I agree with Abe, these negative reviews make no sense.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the percentage of output for this bulb? both uv b and uv a
Answer: There's no information on the packaging.
Question: Is this bulb okay to keep on over night for my bearded dragon
Answer: No. Bearded dragons need darkness in order to sleep properly. But as long as your beardie's home doesn't get below ~70 degrees at night, you won't need additional heat anyway. Invest in a timer that plugs into the wall and has an outlet that you can plug your light fixture into. Set it for about 12 hours on and 12 off, and your beardie should be just fine. If your beardie's home does get below 70 degrees at night, consider investing in a ceramic heat lamp which puts out no light, only heat. You can get a separate timer so that the ceramic lamp comes on when the other goes off.
Question: Does this light act like the sun for my enclosure
Answer: The short answer is yes and no. It's not stated in the question what it's going to be used for. If you have live plants then it won't be enough, however if it is for UVA,UVB and heat for a reptile then it works. Not a good idea for heat on amphibians. You also have to take into account how large the enclosure is, the light is a 100 watt bulb and puts out some heat.
Question: How many inches is this bulb effective up to for emitting uva and uvb
Answer: The ideal distance between your pet and the light should be between 12-14". I believe that they can get a small amount of UV rays at 20", but that does not provide them with the necessary daily requirements. If you are considering using a Mercury Vapor bulb for your reptiles, you need to research the correct strength and distance for your reptile with the specific bulb you are considering and be certain to be within those guidelines. This is vital to the health of your pet.

Question: What are the units of measurement for the uvb rating? numbers without units are meaningless
Answer: I know that doesn't answer your question but I would stay awake
Question: My bulb was quite foggy beige color. turned on for 5 sec then shut off. I read instructions & says it will turn off when hot. Is it defective
Answer: Could be that or your lamp isn't rated for the bulb, the bulb should be foggy only up to a certain point and then you will have the clearer glass and a central focal point right in the middle. If that is foggy or a milky white then it is not like the bulbs I have received.
Question: Can someone explain what is the difference between the 180-200 uvb bulb and the 400 uvb bulb

Answer: Yes the heat lamps are dimmable. I have four of them .I use them in my outside cats house when it's cold in the winter. He stays nice and comfortable since I can control the amount of heat.
Question: What size gallon aquarium is this good for? What is the max heat it will emit
Answer: Depends on what you are using it for.I have 2, one on each side of a 20 long tank and one side of my tank also has UTH pad to create a temperature gradient. As for heat output I would say it's right around 80 degrees at the distance it should be from the reptile.
Question: I bought 60w. There is barely any heat. It's comparable to heat from a warm piece of toast and maybe emits as far as 7". Is that normal
Answer: I have both 60w and the higher wattage (100w?) and use the 60w for my eastern snake breeds. It doesn't seem to project much heat if you hold it over your hand, but in my 10gal glass terrariums, it provides enough heat per my thermo gun. Gets them into the 70s & low 80s, as needed. So maybe test it in action and see.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the dimmer work with the arcadia deep heat projector bulbs
Answer: yes
Question: Is the dome polished inside
Answer: The dome has a reflective, white interior that does a good job of directing the light outward. It's not shiny like polished chrome, but it is a nice reflective white paint, and white is great for reflecting infrared rays from what I've read.
Question: does this lamp come with a spring clip as well to attach to a lamp stand
Answer: Yes the do come with a clip to attach to a tank.
Question: can this be used with a ceramic bulb
Answer: All the various clamp lamps w/ a dimmer can be used with C.H.E.'s (ceramic heat emitters) as well as incandescents, but you cannot dim Mercury Vapor or compact fluorescent lights. If you need to use these dimmable lamps w/ the latter two light-types down the road, I tape the dimmer dial onto Max. and use a timer, power strip or surge suppressor with a toggle (rockerOn/Off) switch. Don't mean to abuse dead equines here, but if you suddenly find yourself a reptile parent there's much so to learn quickly, and confusion persists...

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used for a 75 gal tank with additional heat sources
Answer: Yes!
Question: Will i want tropical or desert bulbs for a ball python
Answer: Neither, ball pythons don't need lighting. Now you can use a uvb but its not required. Ball pythons are nocturnal anyway. Lighting is mainly an owner preference. I have 12 ball pythons.
Question: What is the measurement of the height
Answer: About 2 inches
Question: Is it ok for a 10 gallon tank? I have only a alligator lizard and they are not known for basking
Answer: You cannot achieve a heat gradient in a 10 gallon. You need at least a 20 gallon.
