14 best tortoise food
Tortoise food is specially formulated nutrition for pet tortoises, which is essential for their health and well-being. Proper nutrition is crucial to ensure that tortoises receive the right balance of nutrients to thrive. Here's what you need to know about tortoise food:
Nutritional Requirements: Tortoises have specific dietary needs that include a balance of fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals. The exact nutritional requirements can vary depending on the species of tortoise, so it's important to research the specific needs of your tortoise's species.
Commercial Tortoise Food: There are commercially available tortoise food pellets or mixes that are designed to provide a well-rounded diet for tortoises. These typically contain a blend of vegetables, fruits, and other ingredients that meet their dietary requirements.
Fresh Vegetables: In addition to commercial food, tortoises should be offered fresh vegetables as a significant part of their diet. Leafy greens like kale, collard greens, and dandelion greens are often recommended. Some fruits can also be given in moderation.
Hay: High-fiber hay, such as timothy hay, can be an essential part of a tortoise's diet. It helps with digestion and provides the necessary fiber content.
Calcium: Tortoises need calcium for shell health and bone development. Calcium supplements or calcium-rich foods like calcium blocks or cuttlebones may be required, especially for certain species.
Water: Tortoises need access to clean, fresh water for drinking and soaking. Soaking also helps with hydration and can aid in digestion.
Variety: Providing a variety of foods can help ensure that tortoises get a well-rounded diet. However, it's essential to avoid toxic plants or foods that are high in oxalates, as these can be harmful to tortoises.
Feeding Schedule: The frequency of feeding can vary based on the age and species of the tortoise.Younger tortoises may need more frequent meals, while adults may require less frequent feeding.
Supplements: Depending on the tortoise's specific needs, additional supplements may be recommended by a veterinarian, such as vitamin supplements.
Consult a Veterinarian: It's crucial to consult with a veterinarian who specializes in reptile care to ensure that you are providing the right diet and care for your specific tortoise species. Regular check-ups can help monitor your pet's health.
In conclusion, providing the correct diet and nutrition is essential for the health and longevity of pet tortoises. Proper research and consultation with a reptile veterinarian are key to ensuring that your tortoise receives the appropriate food and care.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a Forest Hinged back tortoise would this be a good choice along with fresh fruits and veggies |
Answer: | Yes, this is good for a forest species that would have fruit and protein in its diet in the wild. I feed it as a treat and training aid for my Redfoot tortoises, which are a tropical (S. American) forest species. They love it, but it is not their primary diet--I feed them fresh fruits (25%) and greens (75%) with meat protein every 7-10 days (they pick chicken bones clean). Hope this helps! |
Question: | Is this okay for sulcatas |
Answer: | Well....I'm not a vet nor do I own a sulcatas but I do own a Eastern Box Turtle and a Mexican Red-Footed Tortoise. I've had the box tortoise for over 35 years and he is a character. He eats worms, meal worms, crickets, grasshoppers, regular worms, etc., like I said...he's a character but after 35 years he's healthy as a horse.....and he doesn't eat this stuff....... but the Mexican Red-Footed Tortoise which I believe is more like a sulcatas loves this stuff. When I first bought it (because he was only eating lettuce and we all know they can't live on that alone) anyway, he heard that rattle and came running.....literally....and still does. When he wants more he goes up to the container sits there and stares at it like he's reading the label.....funny..... It has fruit which I think is the deciding factor....it really smells fruity. He's originally from northern South America so you see why I compared yours and mine but I just read that feeding of fruit should be avoided regarding sulcatas so I'm not sure if this would be the best choice. Sorry I can't be of more help and feeding this food is a easy way out at feeding time but I'm not sure about yours. |
Question: | Can Greek tortise eat this |
Answer: | I think so. I put alittle warm water in a dish, then the food. After it softens, I put it on the tortoises lettuce. |
Question: | Is this good tor desert tortoises |
Answer: | See my review. This is only good as an occasional treat for a desert or grassland tort. It's high in protein (19%) and tropical fruits that a desert tort would not find in nature. Research your species care sheet on tortoise.org. Most keepers do not recommend a commercial food; it's better to feed them fresh grazing grasses and veggies. Zoo Med makes a grassland tortiose food that is more appropriate (though they may not like it as much). I gave this product 5 stars for my Redfoot tortoises, who are a tropical forest species that will eat fruit and animal protein in nature. They like this food as a treat & training aid and will not touch the grassland tort food. Hope this helps! The |

User questions & answers
Question: | Ahould i sprinkle on top of fruits and veggies or serve alone |
Answer: | It is okay to serve alone. But if you have fresh fruit or veggies, it's always a good idea to serve something fresh. I usually put lettuce leaves and cut fruit like watermelon and then sprinkle on top. However, there have been times when I didn't have something fresh on hand so I just served it alone. |
Question: | Is this good for a baby Sulcata tortoise |
Answer: | I would defer to a vet BUT this was recommended by the breeder we got our baby Russian tortoise from & she still eats it now that she's 2 years old. |
Question: | Can box turtles eat this? my turtles are attracted to red and this is the only one i found i can afford at the moment. thanks |
Answer: | I don't know. I believe my turtle knows it is feeding time when he smells the tortoise diet that I sprinkle on the top. He tries to eat it first. |
Question: | Is this a good source of nutrients for a Desert Tortoise |
Answer: | I would only use as a treat. Mazuri is better for their diet. My sulcatas won't eat this product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried this food on hatchling desert tortoises? I have one that's about 6-8 months old and is a picky eater. Thanks for any response |
Answer: | Soak a few pellets in water till they turn to mush, then fold it up in a piece of lettuce like a little tortoise taco. Once they get used to eating it, you won't have to do the taco thing anymore. I still mix in chopped lettuce and dandelion bits, though. They like it that way. |
Question: | i bought this at a pet store and gave it to my desert tortoise i mixed it with greens and i notice yes flees or some sort of bugs in the contain |
Answer: | That's strange - my container / product received was / is clean no bugs - but bugs do get attracted to any food so if your tortoise home is not screened to keep out bugs you could be attracting bugs from environment(?) |
Question: | Isn't 9% protein to much for a dessert tortoise (I have a sulcata |
Answer: | The original "Megadiet" (Tortoise Monster Diet by Ziegler Bros.) that was recommended for years by Tortoise Group in Nevada was 12% protein & only 8.5% fiber. It was developed by nutrition specialists at the Smithsonian National Zoo to be a complete desert tortoise food, but later found to be too high protein & way too little fiber. Now they recommend this (ZooMed Grassland 9% protein/26% fiber/5:1 calcium to phosporus ratio) with growing plants to browse. I always moisten it with 2 parts water to 1 part chow until no hard pieces remain. My 2 desert torts are very big and healthy, with nice rounded shells (no "pyramiding"). They love this stuff, it just took a little getting used to. Mixed it with their favorite treats at first, then slowly cut back on the additives. TOUGH LOVE--they will eventually eat it! Their favorite occasional treats with it now are globe mallow, hibiscus flowers, dandelions, & chopped or shredded broccoli (sparingly). Avoid TOO much cabbage family--broccoli, Kale, mustard greens or collards depress their thyroids & can cause goiter. No spinach! (Its oxalic acid binds up calcium). Sure they love lettuce, but it is WORTHLESS for them, and they stop eating the good stuff! No sweet fruit, tomatoes or corn. No canned or frozen veggies or anything with sodium. Aim for at least a 2:1 calcium to phosphorus ratio, and low protein/high fiber (no dog or cat food!! Peas or beans only very sparingly--too much protein &phosphorus). For browsing you can grow dandelions, petunias, verbena, spineless cactus, hollyhocks, (young) grape leaves, rose petals, globe mallow, but use no pesticides. |
Question: | Can i offer both this and the forest blend to my indian star? it looks as though they live in both habitats. also, when soaking, for how long |
Answer: | Yes, this is a good addition to any tortoise's diet, even an Indian Star tortoise! It's high in fiber as it is compressed hay/grass. I feed it a 1-3 times a week, sometimes I just throw in the pellets dry as one of my Sulcata tortoises doesn't mind eating it dry. But when I do add water, I put maybe a 1/4cup in a small bowl and add warm water just above the amount of pellets, cover with anything to keep the warmth in and let it soak for about 5 minutes. It fluffs up quite a bit so a little goes a long ways when you add water! At first they didn't like it, but eventually they'll eat it when I only offer that for a week or so. And now, when I give it to them a few times a week, they don't mind it at all! That way I can be sure they get enough solid fiber along with all the veggies and greens they get!! Enjoy and good luck! -2 Sulcatas- 1 Russian |

Answer: | Yes, this food will work for a desert tortoise, but Mazuri LS Tortoise food would be the best choice. (LS is their low starch product) |
Question: | I this a good product for a Hermann's tortoise |
Answer: | Honestly dark & leafy greens are best for Hermann. Curly Kale, collars, dandelion, honeysuckle, parsley, clover, bell peppers. And if you want to supplement with a food Zoo Med Natural Grasslands would probably be best. Just soak like 2 or 3 pellets in water and mix with fresh salad or alternate with salad. And in the summer if your lawn is not treated fresh clover and some time in the sun is best!!!! |
