13 best terrarium substrate
Terrarium substrate is the material placed at the bottom of a terrarium or enclosure for reptiles, amphibians, or other small animals. It serves various purposes, including providing a suitable living environment, aiding in waste management, and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the enclosure.
Key features and aspects related to terrarium substrate include:
Moisture Retention: Substrates are chosen to help maintain appropriate levels of humidity within the terrarium, mimicking the natural habitat of the animals. Certain substrates retain moisture better than others to create a humid environment.
Aesthetic Appeal: Substrates contribute to the overall visual appeal of the terrarium, enhancing the naturalistic look of the habitat. Different colors, textures, and compositions can be used to replicate various natural environments.
Insulation and Temperature Regulation: Some substrates aid in regulating temperatures within the terrarium. They provide insulation against extreme temperatures and contribute to creating a thermally stable environment for the inhabitants.
Burrowing and Nesting: Depending on the species of animals being housed, the substrate may allow for burrowing, digging, or nesting behaviors. Some reptiles and amphibians prefer substrates that enable them to create tunnels or hide in.
Safe and Non-Toxic: Substrates should be non-toxic and safe for the animals. It's crucial to choose substrates that won't harm the inhabitants if ingested accidentally.
Ease of Cleaning: The substrate should be easy to clean and maintain. Spot cleaning and changing the substrate regularly help in managing waste and maintaining a hygienic environment.
Types of Substrates: a.Cocofiber or Coconut Husk: A popular choice for its moisture retention and natural appearance. b. Sphagnum Moss: Helps in maintaining humidity and is often used in tropical terrariums. c. Sand: Used for species that require a desert-like environment, but caution is needed as it may cause impaction if ingested. d. Bark Chips: Provides a naturalistic look and allows for burrowing for certain species. e. Gravel or Pebbles: Useful for drainage layers or in arid setups.
In summary, choosing the appropriate terrarium substrate is crucial for creating a suitable and comfortable environment for reptiles, amphibians, and other small animals in captivity. The right substrate will support the health and well-being of the animals while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the enclosure.

Question: | How many bags should i buy for a 18x18x24 exo terra? prepping for our crested gecko |
Answer: | i have a 12x12x18 and used a entire bag so i would use two |
Question: | I've had this in a reptile vivarium for about 2 years now but am noticing the set up smells for the first time. Time to replace |
Answer: | Yes, it is time to replace the substrate, you maybe over feeding your pets, or your substrate is too wet. I use this product in my setups all the time two of which I just broke them down after 5 years not because they were souring because I wanted to refreash the plants and add some new ones. |
Question: | Can i mix this with eco earth and forest floor if i need just a little more substrate |
Answer: | Hello - This is a complete substrate. We would strongly recommend using more ABG. We do not recommend ammending it with any other substrates, as it will not perform as designed. |
Question: | Could i use this as a reptile substrate and plant soil at the same time. i'm getting a gold dust day gecko and i'm still trying to figure things out |
Answer: | Yes. The substrate works very well with live plants. I had my set up last for over a year and a half without needing to change out the substrate. |
Product features
Using ABG
Pre mix the bag before adding the ABG Mix to the terrarium.
Wet the substrate before using it for cleaner moving, the moisture helps cut down on dust.
Caution:
When using in a vivarium with a false bottom, make sure that the water in the bottom never rises up past the substrate barrier and ABG mix, as this will quickly result in a saturated, sopping wet mess that is unhealthy both for plants and animals. Anerobic bacteria can quickly take hold in these conditions.
Small Tanks
Large Tanks
Setting Up a Bioactive Vivarium
The modern living vivarium can seem like a complicated – the most puzzling part being what is traditionally not the focus: the lower strata. A variety of materials are used as substrate in order to provide a climate that promotes both the health of the plants and frogs.
ABG Mix works best when used in conjunction with False Bottom, Substrate Barrier, Sphagnum Moss, and Leaf Litter.
Adding Live Plants
Plants in a vivarium help carry moisture from the lower portions of the tank to the airspace of the vivarium. They also create oxygen and help to break down the waste in the tank. Possibly the most important purpose they serve in the vivarium is to provide hiding places and help bring a natural feel to the tank for the inhabitants.
We have Plant kits for most common vivarium sizes!
Adding a Clean up Crew
Microfauna are small insects that clean up waste, dead plant matter, and mold in the vivarium. Common microfauna include Springtails and Dwarf White Isopods.
Adding Pets
After letting plants and microfuana populations establish, the vivarium is ready for Dart Frogs, or other inhabitants that like low ventilation and high humidity. Josh's Frogs Bioactive Booster is a great way to speed up the cycling process!

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the exact measurements of the liner |
Answer: | The lizard mat size I bought fit a normal size 20 gallon tank. If you have a different size, you can always buy bigger and cut it to fit. |
Question: | Would this be ideal for leapord gecko |
Answer: | All reptile carpets are great for leopard geckos, but please make sure you swap it out at least once a week to wash it/replace it as they do get stinky! |
Question: | What does "easy to clean" mean? How long does one last |
Answer: | I purchased two of these for my bearded dragon's home。this carpet comes with a pair of tweezers. When there is something dirty on the carpet, you can clean it with tweezers without removing it. and it is double sided so every week I take it out and shake it off outside, then flip it to the cleaner side when I put it back in the tank. |
Question: | Will this fit a 40 breeder terrarium |
Answer: | It will. I had to cut mine down a little but it does fit. Just an FYI I am swapping mine out for a coconut fiber mat, this one is hard to keep clean and it holds smells. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used to repot a napenthes pitcher plant |
Answer: | Not sure about napenthes pitcher plant, but I used it to repot my orchids (along with bark, and some other media). The coconut husk helps keep the moisture, but at the same time drains well. |
Question: | i soaked the coco husk. do i let it dry first? it seemed i had too much water, not sure how moist to leave it |
Answer: | that depends on the humidity needs of your animal. In my climate, the child months are dry so I left it wet and mist it periodically. I also have arboreal animals that won't be sitting in wet substrate too. I'd squeeze it out in a towel (the color bleeds) or let it set out over night in a thin layer (cookie sheet?) It's easier to mist it wetter than dry it out once it's in the enclosure. |
Question: | How much of this would I need for a 75 gal boa tank |
Answer: | I have a 40 gallon tank and use 1 brick so I would suggest 2. |
Question: | I'm seeing mixed answers. Does this expand into chips or soil (like Eco-Earth |
Answer: | This one expands into chips just as shown on the picture/packaging illustration. If you are looking for a soil-like substrate go for Exo Terra Plantation Soil. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I just got it today and it’s already appears moldy, with white spots in different spots. Is it mold? Is it safe to use |
Answer: | If the label didnt get stuck and rip off onto the soil, it could be mold. Ask for a refund since white spots just arent normal. If you have a pressure cooker or a sterilizer you could risk cleaning it at home, as well (but remember this stuff expands. so do this consciously and cautiously). |
Question: | Does this have any pesticides? I'd like to use this for my Asian Forest Scorpion and Vietnamese Giant Centipede but I'm worried about pesticides |
Answer: | These have no pesticides and should work superbly for your animals. I use it for both of my tarantulas as well as my Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches (they breed with this) and mealworm colony, and I also use this for all of my reptiles |
Question: | What are the dimensions per brick? I've from product dimensions for a total of 16 Gallons. How much does it make |
Answer: | I used 4 bricks for my 55 gallon hermit crab tank and it got the depth to about 4 inches deep, makes a lot |
Question: | We also are unable to order this. Says can't ship it to our address (CA) when we go to check out. Not sure why.... Anybody know |
Answer: | Amazon Customer Service just confirmed: " it can't be shipped to California because of California Department of Food and Agriculture limitations. Warranty and legal restrictions limit the delivery destinations for some products. For more information you can check the California Department of Food and Agriculture website : www.cdfa.ca.gov "This must be a relatively new law - since I've had this shipped to me in CA in the recent past. Disappointing. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would it be okay for a leopard gecko |
Answer: | This would not work for a leopard gecko unfortunately. But we do have Josh's Frogs BioBedding Desert Bioactive Substrate B08T455WGN |
Question: | If I add isopods& springtails will I still need to clean it monthy? We've had multiple escape attempts when cleaning so it would be nice to set& leave |
Answer: | I’m have a 2inch layer of hydroton balls on the bottom. A layer of substrate barrier and a 2-3 inch layer of the bioactive substrate. The springtails are flourishing like crazy and keep it spotless. I would say after 6 months cleaning may be required. But stirring with a fork and adding more biobedding will probably last much longer . |
Question: | Is there a desert version? Looking to start a bio substrate habit for my bearded dragons |
Answer: | Yes there is! Just released in 2021: Josh's Frogs BioBedding Desert Bioactive Substrate B08T455WGN |
Question: | Is this good for tiger salamanders |
Answer: | Our reptile department says it should work as a land area for a salamander. :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many quarts of this to get 3 inches in my 5.5 gallon aquarium |
Answer: | This 8 quart bag is a perfect fit!. Given a standard 5.5 gal tank is 17 L x 9 W x 11 H. If you want 3 inches, then change the height to 3. You need 17*9*3 = 459 cubic inches. 1 US quart is equal to 57.75 cubic inches, therefore you will require 459/57.75 = 7.94 quarts to fill your tank 3 inches. |
Question: | Would this be a good substrate for isopods and roaches |
Answer: | Yes, we use it for our Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and they are healthy and breeding prolifically. |
Question: | Will this work well with bearded dragons |
Answer: | Not if you feed them inside the enclosure and they like to dig. i wanted to see if this would work with a bearded dragon and a crested gecko but after closer examination I’ve determined it’s not good. The bearded dragon might eat some of it if you live feed them inside and if they’re laying eggs and digging it might get in their eyes and skin which would poke them. The terrarium has small splinters in it which would be dangerous for them. I used a bedding of shredded walnut or a green carpet from the repti brand for my bearded dragon I’ve found this to be more safe. For geckos this might would be good if you have a bedding of moss ontop just to keep high humidity and branches for them to climb. But as a bedding alone I wouldn’t risk the safety of my pets. I Hope this helps |
Question: | Will plants grow in this substrate |
Answer: | My plants are doing fine in my tortoise table. You may want to fertilize/feed them from time to time. My table is a closed habitat to keep humidity up for my baby tortoises so the substrate doesn't dry out often. When it does, though, I just dump more water in there. |

The BioDudes handcrafted bioactive substrate for Tarantulas, Scorpions, Spiders, Vinegaroons and other invertebrates. Terra Aranea is a one of a kind substrate that was thoroughly tested for over a year prior to it's release in 2019. Terra Aranea substrate is specifically designed for all biomes that can get very dry and arid or in a high humidity biome. This substrate is designed to hold the perfect amount of water while allowing for evaporation, preventing anaerobic bacteria growth, which is a common fight when dealing with inverts and terrariums. When used in conjunction with the Bio Shot, it will not only help outcompete negative bacterias and mold, it encourages the full self-cleaning, self-maintaining bioactive environment, while ensuring your invert gets the exact husbandry they need, without the worry of harmful molds and bacterias. Terra Aranea also retains all burrows and hides. I have found this substrate brings out many of the instinctual niches that many different invertebrates do in their daily life. Not only does it hold a burrow, it also holds a complete tunnel when the moisture content is held at 25%-75%. Terra Aranea provides excellent organic nutrition for your vivarium by creating necessary air pockets for root development and plant health. These air pockets are also necessary for the springtails and isopods to create a sustainable population in the vivarium. Note: Each 6 qt bag of Terra Aranea weights 3.25 lbs. It is recommended to add the Bio Dude's BioShot to promote bioactivity in your substrate. You can also add springtails, isopods, or earwigs. They are not included, only the single bag of handcrafted substrate. To obtain the self-cleaning, self-maintaining aspect you must add at least one of the above mentioned for optimal performance.
- PLANTS THRIVE: Proven for years to accommodate a huge variety of plants from succulents to tropical plants
- PROPER AERATION AND DRAINAGE: Prevents the buildup of bad bacteria, promotes healthy fungus and mold development for bioactive terrariums. Will not clog and stagnate.
- HOLDS ALL TUNNELS AND BURROWS: Aids in shedding, respiration and hydration
- IO-BALANCED: Each of the multiple ingredients in this precise mix support a balanced ecosystem and can last the life of the animal.
- MAINTAINS HUMIDITY: Keeps your environment perfect, while maintaining proper water balance in the middle and bottom layers, remaining dry on the top.
User questions & answers
Question: | Does this contain charcoal? Thank you |
Answer: | Yes it does!! |
Question: | Is this substrate suitable for land snails |
Answer: | The BioDude has great products. Look at the ingredients and find the one that matches best. . Your snail tank should have at least two inches of damp compost or moss for your snails to burrow into. Popular substrates are compost, coconut coir (coconut fibre) and spaghnum moss. |
Question: | How many bags of this would i need to provide at least 3 inches of depth in a 5.5 gallon tank |
Answer: | Good morning! Thank you so much for reaching out to The Dude! I would suggest one 6 quart bag and one 3 quart bag! This should do the trick. I hope this helps. Have a lovely day! |
Question: | I can't find any info on Bio Shot which was recommended in the description, can anyone help |
Answer: | The BioShot is a combination of beneficial bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms that break down organic waste and add macronutrients to your soil and plants. It’s easier to maintain and seems to work faster than the bugs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The bag indicates 8 quarts, but the post says 24 quarts. Is it three bags |

Answer: | Absolutely. I've been using it for my rose hair for the last 10 years and it works great |
Question: | Would this be good for my iguana |
Answer: | It is very light and smooth. It works good for my tortoise and he likes to dig. There are a few loose strings from the coconut but nothing too alarming. |
Question: | how much do i need for a 40 gallon tank |
Answer: | Measure the length and width of the floor of the aquarium. Measure how tall you want the substrate. Multiply those numbers to get the number of cubic inches you need (length x width x substrate height). One gallon is 231 cubic inches. The package listed is 462 cubic inches. |

- Absorbent, non-abrasive material will not irritate reptiles
- Liner Dimensions: 17.25 x 35.25 Inches
User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions of this item |
Answer: | 35.25x17.25 to perfectly fit in any terrarium with a 36x18 bottom (40 gallon breeder, 30 gallon breeder, 50 gallon, and 65 gallon. It will NOT fit a 40 gallon long, or any other 48"+ tank). Look up "aquarium sizes" for dimensions. |
Question: | Would this be okay to use for my adult bearded dragon? Im worried his claws might get caught in the carpet |
Answer: | His toes will never get caught as long as the mat is in good condition. I vacuum mine and avoid the washing machine or any sort of scrubbing action. If it starts to smell (maybe once a year), simply replace it. |
Question: | Would this work at the bottom of a fish tank? What is it made of? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes, you can use this at the bottom of a fish tank for plants. They have a similar product being marketed for fish for 3x the price. ;) |
Question: | What does "easy to clean" mean? Does it wipe clean? Do you hose it down? How long does one last |
Answer: | I purchased two of these for my bearded dragon's home. It is easy to spot-clean, and it is double sided so every week I take it out and shake it off outside, then flip it to the cleaner side when I put it back in the tank. About once a month, I take it out and hose it down outside and hang it to dry. Meanwhile, I use the other clean one that has already been hosed and dried. I haven't had to purchase another liner for two months. I love these carpets because they fit my tank almost perfectly, are safe for my pet, and are easy to clean. |
