13 best ball python substrate for humidity
Ball python substrate for humidity is an essential element in creating the right environment for your pet snake's health and well-being. Proper substrate helps maintain humidity levels, which are crucial for ball pythons since they are native to the humid forests and savannas of West Africa. Here's what you need to know about substrate for ball pythons:
Purpose of Substrate: Substrate serves multiple purposes in a ball python's enclosure. It helps maintain the necessary humidity levels, provides a comfortable and natural substrate for burrowing and hiding, and aids in maintaining a clean and hygienic environment.
Substrate Types:
- Cypress Mulch: Cypress mulch is a popular choice for ball python enclosures. It retains moisture well and allows snakes to burrow.
- Coconut Coir: Coconut coir, also known as coconut husk bedding, is another excellent option. It holds moisture and is easy to spot clean.
- Orchid Bark: Orchid bark is suitable for maintaining humidity and is available in different sizes, allowing you to choose the appropriate one for your snake.
- Paper Towels/Newspaper: For simplicity and easy cleaning, some keepers opt for paper towels or newspaper. While these don't hold humidity as well as other substrates, they make cleaning a breeze.
Depth: The depth of the substrate layer should be sufficient for your ball python to burrow comfortably. A layer of 2-3 inches is usually recommended.
Humidity Maintenance: To maintain proper humidity levels (usually between 50% and 60% for most ball pythons, with occasional increases during shedding), you can mist the substrate and enclosure with water regularly. Additionally, using a hygrometer to monitor humidity levels is crucial.
Spot Cleaning: Regularly remove feces and soiled substrate to keep the enclosure clean and prevent odor buildup. You may need to replace a portion of the substrate during spot cleaning.
Avoid Cedar and Pine: Avoid using cedar or pine substrates, as they can release toxic fumes harmful to your ball python.
Substrate Changes: When changing the substrate completely, make sure to clean and disinfect the enclosure thoroughly. This helps prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria.
Temperature Gradient: Ensure that your ball python's enclosure also maintains a proper temperature gradient with a warm and cool side. This allows the snake to thermoregulate effectively.
Remember that while maintaining humidity is important, it's also crucial to provide proper ventilation in the enclosure to prevent respiratory issues. Ball pythons are relatively low-maintenance reptiles, but creating the right environment with suitable substrate and humidity levels is essential for their health and comfort.

Question: | can you use this moss for crested gekos |
Answer: | I have used it in my cage. My crested gecko has not had a problem with it |

Answer: | It would have to be spread finely to cover the entire floor. Depending on the coverage you want, two bags would probably suffice. |
Question: | If rehydrated will it regrow |
Answer: | Dried sphagnum moss is dead. Sometimes it turns green bc algae will live in the moss leaf spaces and make it look alive. sphagnum moss does not come back once it is dead. I grow sphagnum moss and growing sphag moss has a very different look than sphagnum filled w algae. |
Question: | Can I use this for Orchids |
Answer: | I have and it works well |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used to repot a napenthes pitcher plant |
Answer: | Not sure about napenthes pitcher plant, but I used it to repot my orchids (along with bark, and some other media). The coconut husk helps keep the moisture, but at the same time drains well. |
Question: | i soaked the coco husk. do i let it dry first? it seemed i had too much water, not sure how moist to leave it |
Answer: | that depends on the humidity needs of your animal. In my climate, the child months are dry so I left it wet and mist it periodically. I also have arboreal animals that won't be sitting in wet substrate too. I'd squeeze it out in a towel (the color bleeds) or let it set out over night in a thin layer (cookie sheet?) It's easier to mist it wetter than dry it out once it's in the enclosure. |
Question: | How much of this would I need for a 75 gal boa tank |
Answer: | I have a 40 gallon tank and use 1 brick so I would suggest 2. |
Question: | I'm seeing mixed answers. Does this expand into chips or soil (like Eco-Earth |
Answer: | This one expands into chips just as shown on the picture/packaging illustration. If you are looking for a soil-like substrate go for Exo Terra Plantation Soil. |

Question: | Is this shaved aspen or shredded? I'm looking for something soft and fine, not chunky and sharp like mulch |
Answer: | Mine was Soft and fine -- not sharp or chunky |
Question: | I have a 48 gallon breeder tank is this enough to put a 2" layer in it |
Answer: | Yeah it will make about 2 inches or more. I have a 60 g tank and I used two bags and there's a pretty good layer of it. |
Question: | do you think a rat snake would like it |
Answer: | I'm not to sure. I use it for a ball python, I would look up what kind of habitat a rat snake is comfortable in. |
Question: | Is this good for a green iguana |
Answer: | This would be far too dry and if eaten can cause impaction (a blockage in the iguana's digestive system). "Proper humidity levels for Green Iguanas are relatively high, between 70% to 80%. Humidity that is not in the correct range can affect long term kidney function. Water bowls should be provided for a source of humidity and a place for soaking." "Suitable substrates include paper towels, brown wrapping paper, Astroturf, indoor/outdoor carpet, and alfalfa pellets. Lineoleum can also be used as long as it is glued down with safe glue. If you use Astroturf or indoor/outdoor carpet, be sure to have extra pieces so you can put a new one in while you are cleaning and disinfecting the old one. Avoid the following substrates: pebbles, bark, rocks, sand, cedar shavings, gravel, corn cob, cat litter, wood shavings, and potting soil with vermiculite, pesticides, fertilizer, or wetting agents. All of these substrates are unsafe for your iguana to ingest, and they can cause damage to the intestines or impactions." Information from drsfostersmith.com |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this in a fish tank? Will it survive and grow in a fish tank? Mostly community fishes, just want to know if I can use this for aquascaping |
Answer: | I have some in a snail tank. From my experience it DOESNT grow, but stays the same under water. It will sink, not float if fully drenched. If you are looking for some stuff just to add here and there and do t expect it to grow, this will work |
Question: | how colorful/bright is it |
Answer: | Its mostly natural brown.. very little is green..but still good quality, natural looking substrate.. |
Question: | would this make a "carpet" ? My Snails are getiing the coconut fiber stuff, stuck to them..i was hoping this would make them a better floor. Thanks |
Answer: | No, not really. It is really puffy, it won't really lay flat like a carpet. There's an exo terra moss mat that may be more what you want. If you go that route, make sure it's the new version that almost looks like furry grass. The older version looks like doo-doo in person. |
Question: | Is the moss dried out? Does it come back to life |
Answer: | Just to add: This moss does not come back to life. It will re-hydrate in water and look nice, but it will not start to grow again. |

Answer: | Absolutely. I've been using it for my rose hair for the last 10 years and it works great |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many quarts of this to get 3 inches in my 5.5 gallon aquarium |
Answer: | This 8 quart bag is a perfect fit!. Given a standard 5.5 gal tank is 17 L x 9 W x 11 H. If you want 3 inches, then change the height to 3. You need 17*9*3 = 459 cubic inches. 1 US quart is equal to 57.75 cubic inches, therefore you will require 459/57.75 = 7.94 quarts to fill your tank 3 inches. |
Question: | Would this be a good substrate for isopods and roaches |
Answer: | Yes, we use it for our Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and they are healthy and breeding prolifically. |
Question: | Will this work well with bearded dragons |
Answer: | Not if you feed them inside the enclosure and they like to dig. i wanted to see if this would work with a bearded dragon and a crested gecko but after closer examination I’ve determined it’s not good. The bearded dragon might eat some of it if you live feed them inside and if they’re laying eggs and digging it might get in their eyes and skin which would poke them. The terrarium has small splinters in it which would be dangerous for them. I used a bedding of shredded walnut or a green carpet from the repti brand for my bearded dragon I’ve found this to be more safe. For geckos this might would be good if you have a bedding of moss ontop just to keep high humidity and branches for them to climb. But as a bedding alone I wouldn’t risk the safety of my pets. I Hope this helps |
Question: | Will plants grow in this substrate |
Answer: | My plants are doing fine in my tortoise table. You may want to fertilize/feed them from time to time. My table is a closed habitat to keep humidity up for my baby tortoises so the substrate doesn't dry out often. When it does, though, I just dump more water in there. |
