11 best horse fly repellents
Horse fly repellents are products specifically designed to deter horse flies and other flying insects from bothering horses. These repellents are an essential part of horse care, as horse flies and other insects can cause discomfort, irritation, and even health issues for horses. Here's what you should know about horse fly repellents:
Types of Repellents: There are several types of horse fly repellents available, including sprays, ointments, wipes, and roll-on products. Each type has its advantages, and the choice often depends on personal preference and the horse's behavior.
Active Ingredients: Horse fly repellents typically contain active ingredients that deter flies and insects. Common active ingredients include pyrethroids, permethrin, citronella, and natural oils like eucalyptus and neem oil. Some repellents use a combination of these ingredients for increased effectiveness.
Sprays: Spray-on repellents are popular because they are easy to apply. They can be sprayed directly onto the horse's coat, mane, and tail. Some sprays also provide a shiny finish to the horse's coat.
Ointments and Wipes: Ointments and wipes are applied by hand and can be useful for targeting specific areas or for horses that are sensitive to sprays. They provide localized protection.
Roll-Ons: Roll-on repellents are applied directly to the horse's ears, face, and other sensitive areas where flies tend to gather.
Duration of Protection: The effectiveness and duration of protection can vary between products. Some repellents provide protection for several hours, while others may need to be reapplied more frequently.
Resistance: Over time, flies and insects can develop resistance to certain repellent ingredients. It's a good idea to switch between different products or brands periodically to prevent this resistance from developing.
Safety: Safety is essential when using horse fly repellents. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application, and avoid applying repellents to broken or irritated skin. Some products may not be suitable for use on pregnant mares or very young foals, so it's essential to read the label.
Environmentally Friendly Options: Some horse owners prefer environmentally friendly and natural repellents that do not contain synthetic chemicals. These products use plant-based oils and ingredients to repel flies.
Fly Masks and Sheets: In addition to repellents, horse fly masks and fly sheets can provide additional protection. These coverings help shield the horse's eyes, ears, and body from flies and other flying insects.
Regular Maintenance: Regular cleaning of stables, paddocks, and the removal of manure can help reduce the presence of flies in the horse's environment, complementing the use of repellents.
Choosing the right horse fly repellent depends on your horse's needs, your preferences, and the severity of the fly problem in your area. It's important to consult with a veterinarian or a knowledgeable horse care professional for guidance on selecting the most suitable product for your specific situation.

Question: | Is this oil based |
Answer: | No, but if your problem with fruit flies is an indoor problem there is an easy, inexpensive solution. You'll be surprised how many it will attract. It won't get all of them, but it'll get the majority of them. Just check the bottom of the glass occasionally and you'll see the little buggers laying there. |

Question: | Is this a concentrate |
Answer: | We were at the county fair about 6 years ago and there was a lady spraying something on all of the animals pigs, chicken, dogs, cows everything. We asked her what it was and it was this product. I looked at the reviews and looked online ended up seeing a close up shot of the picture of the ingredients and it's mostly citronella. I do not know how to post a picture on here or I would. We do not have the problem anymore and so I do not know where the bottle is. I wish you luck but it did solve our problem and it didn't hurt our dogs. |

Answer: | the one I bought is throw size ... 62 x 50 inches... they have other sizes |

Product description
Insects choose a “victim” via a complex interaction between visual and chemical cues. Some animals (and people) are more attractive to pests than others. In our equine friends, coat color, level of activity, carbon dioxide output and odors secreted by the horse all play a role. The normal output of chemical smells acts like a signal to the insect’s guidance system to help it find and attack its potential food source. Research has shown that certain fatty acids act as insect attractants, while others are repellents. Ecovet uses a proprietary mixture of naturally occurring fatty acids that confuses and overwhelms the insect’s normal directional ability, so the insect is unable to locate your horse as its next victim. It’s like having a GPS system that is shouting confusing and conflicting directions at you … until you finally give up. Flies can transform your easygoing horse into a stressed-out, over-reactive mess. Until now, you had two choices for repelling flies, toxic pesticides or essential oils, which offer limited effectiveness. Ecovet introduces a bio rational, or less toxic, approach to protect your friend from pests. Ecovet is a whole new way to protect your horse, yourself and your family. Ecovet is a less toxic but effective solution to get rid of annoying pests. It is extremely effective: Flies will not land on a horse thanks to the Ecovet barrier. Compared to other products, it is safer for horses and for the humans applying the product. The active ingredients are naturally derived fatty acids – not toxic chemicals. It is effective on many types of flies, ticks, mosquitoes and lice and has clinically shown improvement for horses with difficult-to-treat sweet itch problems (hypersensitivity reaction to midge bites). It is safe for horses’ sensitive skin and has a non-sensitizing formula. There are no known resistance problems and no known reactions on honeybees. It is available in 18 oz bottle or a gallon refill size.
- Real alternative to toxic pesticides;active ingredients are food-grade fatty acids

- Safer for horses and for the humans applying the product
- Effective on many types of flies, ticks, mosquitoes and lice for insect control on your horse.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this toxic |
Answer: | I used it last summer and didn't seem to kill any horses with it! If you read the description it says non-toxic. It is strong so don't take a deep breath when are spraying it or you will cough a bit. |
Question: | Does this attract predator animals like bears/lions |
Answer: | I don't have any lions but have had no issues with coyotes, fox or bear. It does not have the most pleasant sent so I doubt any animal would be 'attracted' to it. Works well! |
Question: | I ordered this last week, and it didn’t come with a sprayer. Was that supposed to be included |
Answer: | It depends on what size you ordered. If you ordered the little bottle (like the photo) then, yes, it was supposed to have a sprayer. I order the gallon (refill) size and put it in my own spray bottle. I assume this came from Ecovet (and not a middle man supplier). You might contact their customer service directly and ask for a sprayer or just spend a few buck on a spray bottle like at Walmart. |
Question: | Can this be used on goats |
Answer: | This product contains no chemicals and can be used on humans also. I would think that it would be safe for goats. Probably should contact the company to be sure. |

A novel approach to protecting your friend...
Made from a proprietary mixture of 3 food grade fatty acids. As it evaporates, it provides a 'barrier' of protections that repels and kills multiple types of insects.

A Legacy More Than 125 Years in the Making
Every day at Absorbine is a celebration of a legacy that began with a truly extraordinary couple: Mary Ida and Wilbur F. Young.
A labor of love, they set out to find an alternative to the common 19th-century practice of “blistering” lame horses. Knowing there had to be a better, more humane way, Mary Ida developed a special blend of herbs into an essential oils tincture, and Wilbur rounded out the formula with a few more natural ingredients using knowledge he gained working part time for a pharmacist. The result of their teamwork is Absorbine Veterinary Liniment, which has been loved by horse owners for over 125 years.
Through the years we have stayed true to our mission to provide innovative, high quality animal care products. Our products are used by horse owners around the world, and we work hard every day to be The Horse World’s Most Trusted Name.

Question: | Can I use on outside cat |
Answer: | It doesn't have a "strong" scent, but it does have a scent. It doesn't leave the fur oily. It does leave it silky smooth, once it dries. It doesn't take much. I spray it on my hands, rub them together, and then rub my hands on the cat. I use this product before cat shows, and find that it really works well. |
