13 best api tests

API (Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Inc.) Test Kits are essential tools for aquarium hobbyists and fishkeepers to monitor and maintain the water quality in their aquatic environments. These test kits are used to measure various parameters in the aquarium water to ensure a healthy and stable environment for fish, plants, and other aquatic life. Here are some key aspects of API Test Kits related to aquariums, fish, and aquatic pets:

  1. Water Parameter Testing: API Test Kits are designed to measure different water parameters critical for the well-being of aquarium inhabitants. Common parameters include pH levels, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, carbonate hardness (KH), and general hardness (GH). These tests help aquarists understand and control water conditions.

  2. Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate Tests: These tests are crucial for monitoring the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium.Ammonia and nitrite are harmful to fish and need to be kept at low or undetectable levels. Nitrate, on the other hand, is less harmful but can be problematic at high levels.

  3. pH Tests: Monitoring pH levels is essential because different fish species have specific pH requirements. Maintaining the correct pH helps ensure the health and well-being of your aquatic pets.

  4. KH and GH Tests: Carbonate hardness (KH) and general hardness (GH) tests measure the mineral content of the water. These parameters are important for maintaining a stable environment, as they can affect pH stability and the health of fish and plants.

  5. Regular Testing: API Test Kits are typically used on a regular basis, especially during the setup of a new aquarium, after significant water changes, or when issues arise. Consistent testing helps aquarists identify and address water quality problems promptly.

  6. Easy-to-Use: API Test Kits are designed to be user-friendly, with clear instructions and color-coded test solutions. Most kits include test tubes and reagents needed for accurate measurements.

  7. Interpretation of Results: Each API Test Kit provides guidelines for interpreting test results, indicating whether the measured parameter falls within an acceptable range for the specific needs of your aquarium.

  8. Water Treatment: API also offers a range of water conditioners and treatments to help aquarists adjust water parameters if they are out of the desired range. These products can help neutralize harmful substances, condition tap water, and promote a healthy aquarium environment.

  9. Compatibility: API Test Kits are compatible with both freshwater and saltwater aquariums, making them suitable for a wide range of aquatic setups.

In conclusion, API Test Kits are valuable tools for aquarium enthusiasts to maintain the optimal water conditions necessary for the health and well-being of their aquatic pets. Regular testing and proper water management are crucial for a successful and thriving aquarium ecosystem.

Product description

Most water problems are invisible to the eye. Quickly measure and modify the six aquarium levels that are most important to the health of your freshwater fish with the API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT. To stay healthy and thrive, fish need properly balanced levels of ammonia, pH, high range pH, nitrite and nitrate. These levels can change rapidly and create harmful conditions when fish waste, uneaten food or other organic matter accumulate, or when untreated water is added. If left uncorrected, all of these can be harmful or even fatal to fish, with consequences such as reduction of oxygen, increase in stress and higher risk of disease. The API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT measures these six parameters with scientific accuracy and provides professional results. It comes with four glass test tubes, a holding tray, test tube rack and computer calibrated, laminated color card. Just fill the test tubes, add the test drops and compare results to the color card. Then follow the recommendations on the card if action is required. With API Aquarium products, it’s easy to keep a beautiful saltwater, freshwater or reef aquarium. For over 50 years, API has been creating innovative, research-driven solutions that make it easier to care for your fish and aquarium. API Aquarium Treatment Supplies are designed to work in conjunction with each other to provide best results to control algae, promote healthy bacterial growth and help control and cure fish diseases and conditions such as ich and fin rot. They work to provide a safe, hospitable environment for fish such as tropical community fish, cichlids, goldfish and more. User questions & answers

Question: Can any of these tests be used for both saltwater and freshwater? I noticed a lot of the individually packaged tests say they can be used for both
Answer: Api ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test kits can be used for both salt and fresh water aquariums, the liquid solutions are the same for salt and fresh. BUT the color cards that you use to compare your test to are slightly different. I have both fresh water and marine. The first time I bought these kits, I bought for saltwater and freshwater and never threw away the color cards. Now it doesn't matter if I get freshwater or saltwater test kits because I have both freshwater and saltwater cards.
Question: Would this kit be a good one for my planted aquarium
Answer: Yes, this is a good general water testing kit, unless you have plants that are very sensitive to water hardness. This kit does NOT include a water-hardness tester.
Question: I'm a newbie. I have a betta in 10G tank and I'm told that I need to test the water always. Not sure if I should get this or get cheaper ones instead
Answer: Frankly, with a 10G tank you should just be doing weekly water changes of at least 25-30%. You can't really "let things go" with a tank that size and it's unlikely that you would have ammonia spikes with such frequent water changes. I have a little 5.5 gallon with a couple of albino cory cats and I use a test strip every once in a blue moon, but the water is always fine because I do weekly changes. Am looking at this kit for my 125 gallon tank, but would bother for a tiny tank.
Question: How many tests can be run with this kit
Answer: About 120. Problem is that if you use the full set of products daily you will quickly run out of the ammonia test and the Nitrates tests (each with 2 bottles) because they take 8-10 drops each, compared to the Ph test which only takes 3 drops. I mainly test ammonia and nitrites so I've had to buy separate ammonia kits twice now because I ran out of fluid, while my high range ph bottle is nearly full. Also - Prime, AmGuard and other products convert Ammonia into harmless Ammonium however, it will still read as ammonia on your API kit - so it's basically lying to you. There are kits that will show you active ammonia and harmless ammonium and my API kit reads 8.0 ammonia but the other kit reads it as all harmless ammonium and zero active ammonia. You have do dose your tank with Prime every 48 hours or less to keep the ammonium from converting back to killer ammonia. This will keep happening until your tank finally converts the ammonium to nitrites. My 2 of my 4 well-cycled tanks somehow lost their cycling so that's not happening for those tanks yet.

Product description

Keep your fish healthy and thriving by testing your aquarium water's GH levels regularly with this easy-to-use API GH & KH TEST KIT for freshwater aquariums. Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. Water hardness is a measure of the dissolved mineral content of water. There are two types: the general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH). When keeping freshwater fish and plants, the GH and the KH of aquarium water should match their natural habitat. The API GH & KH TEST KIT helps aquarists duplicate the natural habitat of their fish, as well as detect low KH levels, which can lead to rapid and wide pH shifts, stressing fish. API GH & KH TEST KIT contains KH test bottle, GH test bottle, instructions with color card, and two capped glass test tubes. User questions & answers

Question: Which test kit do I need to test alkalinity
Answer: KH measures akalinity
Question: Ok, my Molly tank read : 12 drops of gh to turn color and 1 drop of kh to turn color. Does this seem suitable for mollies
Answer: I always thought that particular test was a bit confusing as it has no color sample in which to judge the test color by. When you say it takes 12 drops to turn color ( Green ) how deep is the " color" Green ? Look at the colors indicated by the Ammonia test to get an idea on how deep a Green color you have. I have Endlers in a tank and my readings for that tank are just like yours. My Endlers are active, have a good appetite so I would say that your Molly's should be happy with those readings With that said, I would say that the PH is a bit more important than the GH&KH test. Mollies also like to munch on Algae and or Green Veges so provide some for their good health. They also like plants to hang out in, and to provide safety for the fry's.
Question: When I did this, the water changed to a pale yellow or blue within one drop. Are you supposed to keep putting drops in until it is much darker
Answer: Make sure you shake several times after after each drop. Bright yellow for KH not pale yellow. Green change for GH.
Question: Can someone share instructions please? Mine got destroyed. Thank you
Answer: Fill a test tube to the level line. Add one drop at a time and invert tube to mix after each drop. For KH (Carbonate Hardness), the test is complete when water changes from blue to yellow. For GH it is complete when water changes from orange to green. For both tests it is one drop per degree of hardness. So if the KH test takes 5 drops, your CO3 Hardness is 5 dKH. (Its also 17.9 ppm/per degree if you want to convert)

User questions & answers

Question: Is it easy to interpret the readings for a Betta fish
Answer: I don't use this for my Betta tanks (I have 7 Betta only tanks) only my 50 gallon cichlids tank because bettas are such hardy fish they can survive in most conditions. For my Betta tanks I use tap water and the aquasafe (a dechlorinator) and they're happy as can be. But the test strips are very easy to read. just go online to look at the general parameters they should be in before you do the test. If you do purchase these read the instructions some of the strips you have to read right away and some you have to wait a few minutes.
Question: Can you use this for saltwater
Answer: Yes. 4 of the 5 tests work for saltwater also. Only the GH (general hardness) does not work for saltwater.
Question: Are the strips easy to read? Are the colors well defined
Answer: I found them easy to read and liked that the chart is printed on the container that holds the strips so it's readily available. When I first got my kit, I read the instructions and using a felt tipped pen, circled the values that my tank should be at for each test, so when I performed a test I could check it immediately instead of referring back to the instructions each time.
Question: can this test be used for top water
Answer: Just remember that most of these test kits or strips for aquarium use report their results as "nitrate ion" or "nitrite ion", while the EPA standard for drinking water is expressed as "nitrate as nitrogen" or "nitrite as nitrogen". Thus, your aquarium test kit or strip will report a value considerably higher than what it "should" for comparison with a lab test or the EPA standards. This causes a lot of people to needlessly worry.

User questions & answers

Question: What size brush for cleaning
Answer: I do not know, order not for me
Question: Can these be used to store Isopropyl Alcohol for on to go first aid kit? How big is the tube and is it fragile or strong enough for extended use
Answer: I have noticed that the caps, while quite appropriate for water parameter test kits, would not be suitable for long-term storage of any liquid. They leak a bit.
Question: What are the dimensions of the vial? Is there a cheaper alternative? 20 dollars seems like a lot for what we're getting
Answer: yes there is cheaper alternatives. I just bought plastic and glass ones with the little caps. The API ones however have nicer caps. Have a marking where 5ml is (which takes out guesswork) The ones I bought have no such graduations. So Im back looking at these because I was cheap the first time around. Maybe we should split the box of 24. Like you I have no need for 24 tubes. I need about 6. Dont forget these are glass tubes too. Some of the reagents in the API test kit are caustic and they will react with plastic test tubes (somewhat) I dont know. The them being glass, the caps and the marking that say 5ml make this a perfect match. One of the local fish stores has these for 1 dollar per test tube. I might buy them there too. Hard to say.
Question: What test tube rack would be best for these
Answer: I built my own. If you want a cheap hack, get a block of styrofoam and press the top of an open test tube into it at intervals to get the outer diameter perfect. Then cut out the styrofoam to the best depth. Test tubes fit snugly.

Product description

Keep your fish healthy and thriving by testing your aquarium water's NO2 levels regularly with this easy-to-use API NITRITE TEST KIT for freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Testing water parameters weekly helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish. Nitrite is produced in the aquarium by fish waste and uneaten fish food. Low levels of nitrite inhibit respiration and suppress the immune system; high levels cause suffocation.  The API NITRITE TEST KIT tests for harmful nitrite levels from 0 to 5 ppm. User questions & answers

Question: Can a colorblind person use this test kit? I have trouble with red and green
Answer: It may prove difficult to read the test results but as long as you are able to match the shade you see with the shade on the result card. This test will shows a color range from light blue to deep purple.
Question: Allowed to carry on plane? TSA says 3.3 ounce, i hope there aren't chemicals on it that i shouldn't carry. 0_
Answer: This one I believe is safe to carry on a plane. The ammonia kit however, must be shipped by ground mail (says amazon) because of federal regulations as to what can and can't go on a plane. So since this one does NOT have that warning and can be shipped via prime 2-day, I believe it is fine. You will have to ask the nice security officer at the airport though.
Question: Hello I ordered this the 21st of April why is it taking so long to ship it
Answer: Supply chains could be delayed due to Covid?
Question: Is this test necessary and is it easy to use for a novice? I received a 15 gallon as a present but I did not know it would be so much work and money
Answer: The test is easy to use; just remember to empty and rinse your vial after use, and rinse the vial with tank water (I dip some out with a small clean Dixie cup, then pour it into the vial and discard the water into the sink) before filling with water to do your test. And I examine the results under sunlight or a daylight spectrum fluorescent. If you are doing regular water changes(weekly and/or as your water tests say to), and keeping the tank clean, you will not have to use this test often. Do not overfeed, and do not overload your tank (put too many fish or put too big of a fish in it). At the start you should have ammonia and nitrite test kits, and test daily to see what is going on while your filter cycles, then as a doublecheck for water quality. And yes it can take a month or so for your filter to cycle.Goldfish have a reputation for being a cheap fish, and easy to take care of... I breed and keep fancies; and honestly, 3 goldfish per 55 gallon aquarium! A mature goldfish is about the size of an adult fist in body; and it is hard to keep water quality good for three that size in that size aquarium. In a 15 gallon no more than two small ones and they are going to grow and outgrow your tank. Half a dozen guppies or so will work, or a couple of mollies; or one betta. Bettas need water about 85f, good quality, and at least a 10 gallon aquarium.

Answer: No salt level test, you need to buy that separately.
Question: Will this work for a aquarium
Answer: I don't know what the parameters for water testing are for an aquarium and if they're different from a pond but if I were you I would call the phone number on the package and talk to the people who make the product. They can answer all of your questions for you better than I can.

Why be proactive with water treatments?

A natural pond has a constant supply of fresh water flowing into it, such as from a stream or spring. Water also flows out of a natural pond, taking fish waste and other toxins with it. This isn’t true for most garden ponds as they are closed systems. Garden ponds also tend to be much smaller than natural ponds, so they do not offer the amount of water per fish that you find in nature. For these reasons, water treatments are necessary to keep water conditions safe for both fish and plant life and for clearer water.

Following specific steps each season allows you to create a backyard retreat you’ll enjoy all year long! For more information about what’s needed each season, check out more below.

Spring Start Up - Get Your Pond Ready!

It's pond startup time! Whether filling a new pond or re-establishing an existing pond, following some simple steps at startup will yield benefits you’ll enjoy all season long. The 3 key steps that must be taken are making your tap water safe, activating the natural pond cycle, and maintaining sparkling clean water to boost fish and plant health. Once the water temperature reaches above 42⁰F, you’ll also want to start feeding your fish again. It is important to take care of all of your plants in the spring with API AQUATIC PLANT MEDIA and API AQUATIC PLANT FOOD TABLETS as they will be the key to success in most ponds! Lastly, monitor the water conditions in your pond with the API POND MASTER TEST KIT, an easy and accurate way to test 4 key water parameters including pH, ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate.

Summer - Provide Regular Care And Enjoy Your Pond

Summer is the time to sit back and enjoy all of your hard work! You’ll need to continue regular care for your pond that includes adding beneficial bacteria like API POND-ZYME and API POND ECOFIX. While everything looks great, you’ll want to closely monitor the water conditions so that you can protect the health of your pond including plants and fish. Algae grows in the presence of sunlight where there is excess nutrients in the pond water for the algae to feed on. API POND ALGAEFIX has been used for over 18 years to effectively control green water algae, string algae, and blanketweed without harming fish or plants. At this time it could be beneficial to do a partial water change, adding API POND STRESS COAT and API POND SALT and fertilizing your pond plants.

Autumn - Prepare For Winter

Performing a few simple steps in the autumn will prepare your fish and plants for the long, cold winter ahead and lay the foundation for a healthy start in the spring. We recommend removing excess organic matter (like leaves and grass clippings, for example) to reduce fish stress during the winter months. Use a net to remove as many leaves as possible. Routine addition of API POND ECOFIX or API POND-ZYME throughout the season promotes healthy water quality and reduces the amount of organic matter you need to remove at the end of the season. It is also important to perform a 25% water change, adding API POND STRESS COAT and API POND SALT to make the tap water safe and to replenish important electrolytes which aid fish during the stressful winter months.

Winter – Keep Pond Water Circulating

In cooler climates, when the water temperature drops, fish will naturally eat less than at warmer temperatures. Once the water temperature drops below 42⁰F, fish will cease eating and if they have been fed properly through the summer and autumn, they will have ample reserves to survive the rigors of winter. It is also important to ensure your pond has circulation to keep an open area on the ponds surface throughout the winter months to prevent the buildup of toxic gases which can accumulate from the decomposition of organic matter.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this accurate in salt water too
Answer: Yes these strips are for fresh and salt water.
Question: What is the expiration date
Answer: Hello derek r., the expiration date is stamped on the bottom of the bottle. These strips have a 3 year shelf life.
Question: I just received this item and there is no color chart on the bottle to compare. Am i missing something
Answer: Color chart is behind the back label. It is on the bottle. You will need to peel the label back from the bottom. This is a good product.
Question: What is expiration date? I bought some before and it had only 1 month left
Answer: The bottle it reads two numbers: 2020/12 December 2020?) I've read things about retailers putting a false ex-date on products just to move the product... with no concern about the end user. Can I trust this product? I've left API strips b/c they're def not accurate. API master kit is good.. but I prefer ACCURATE test strips. Anyone know if these are reliable?
