14 best bio sand filters
Bio sand filters, also known as biosand filters, are a type of water purification system designed to remove impurities and contaminants from water, making it safe for drinking and other domestic uses. These filters are particularly popular in areas with limited access to clean drinking water and are commonly used in humanitarian and development projects to provide safe water sources for communities.
Key features and principles of bio sand filters include:
Sand Bed: Bio sand filters consist of a container filled with layers of specially selected and prepared sand and gravel. The sand bed serves as the primary filtration medium.
Biological Layer: On top of the sand bed, there is a biological layer that contains microorganisms, such as bacteria, that play a crucial role in breaking down and removing harmful pathogens and organic matter from the water.
Physical Filtration: The sand bed itself acts as a physical filter, trapping larger particles and sediment present in the water. As water passes through the sand, these impurities are gradually removed.
Biological Filtration: The biological layer contains beneficial bacteria that digest and eliminate pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, that may be present in the water. This biological process is an essential aspect of the filter's effectiveness.
Maintenance: Bio sand filters are relatively low-maintenance. Periodic cleaning and maintenance involve scraping off the top layer of the sand to remove accumulated impurities and encouraging the growth of beneficial microorganisms.
Simple Operation: These filters are simple to operate and do not require electricity or complex technology. They are suitable for areas with limited resources and technical expertise.
Cost-Effective: Bio sand filters are cost-effective to construct and maintain compared to other water treatment methods. They are often made from locally available materials, making them accessible to communities with limited budgets.
Effectiveness: When properly maintained and operated, bio sand filters can effectively remove a wide range of contaminants, making the water safe for consumption.
Flow Rate: The flow rate of a bio sand filter may vary depending on its size and design. However, they are typically not suitable for large-scale water treatment and are better suited for household or small community use.
Overall, bio sand filters are a sustainable and reliable solution for improving access to clean drinking water in areas where it is scarce. They provide an affordable and simple method for treating water and reducing the risk of waterborne diseases, contributing to better public health and well-being in underserved communities.

Question: | How often do you have to use this product |
Answer: | Yes. I used it to connect a Hayward pump to an Intex hose. |
Question: | How do you use this product |
Answer: | I love the salt system. I have had it for 3 summers and last summer I only had to add 1/2 a bottle of algaeside, a bottle of stabilizer and 2 gallons of liquid chlorine when I opened the pool-that’s it, all summer. I have my sand filter on a timer and run it all night while my chlorine generator is running. Keeping the stabilizer around 100ppm is key and follow the salt recommendation of the generator. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size (gph) powerhead should I use with this |
Answer: | I've never had a Coleman. Since the liner is for a 16ft pool I do not believe it would work for an 18ft because the liner gets pretty tight with water in it! |
Question: | Would this need an air pump for shallow water for a fiddler crab tank |
Answer: | No it will not work with that pool sorry. |
Question: | What size air pump does this need |
Answer: | You hook this up with pool hose, use a extended bar to guide it. The hose must have a connection to your filter unit, so while filtering you are vacuuming up the dirt from the bottom of the pool. I have an above ground pool, and this works wonderful, even better than my 300.00 Baracudda which was a total waste. If you need more info let me know. I could take pictures. |
Question: | Would a air stone fit inside the tube and sponge |
Answer: | You must read the description carefully - it may not have a pole with it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | approximately how many spheres are in a 2 qt pack |
Answer: | I live in Southern Oho so I wait until the temperature is stays above freezing, usually middle of April. I have a 5 gallon container which I mix Bio-Dex with water. I do not remove the sand filter top because I worry getting it back so it won't leak. I have Hayward Filter I put the top control in the back flow position. I attach a pool hose (1-1/2 " diameter)) about two feet long to the discharge and position it upward. I have a funnel and I pour the mix into the hose which flows into the filter, make sure you have the drain cap screwed on to the bottom of the filter. I then pour in about another 5 gallons of water so the sand is covered. I let it stand until I open the pool. Before I start the pump to flow into the pool I put the control in the back flush position and flush the filter out. I have done this for the passed few years. I did read where you can mix salt into a 5 gallon and is supposed to do the same thing. I am not two sure how much salt. It is helpful if you have two people. I usually do it my sell because when I do it there is no one else around. At 75 I do not like waiting for help. I hope this helps. It is always best to wear protective gear, like safety glasses, vinyl gloves, shoes and old clothes. Best to keep a hose nearby just encase you need to flush any spills. This is what I do there is no guarantee it work it is just what I do. |
Question: | How many boxes would I need for 90 gallon tank running wet/dry filtration |
Answer: | It depends on how many fish you are supporting, how often and how big you do water changes. Change 50% every week and might keep up but skip a week and bad juju! I have one on each side of my tank. They are cheap and low profile enough to run more than one filter. Also, get the one with the black sponges. These bright green sponges stick out like a sore thumb! |
Question: | Hi, does this harbor beneficial bacteria? Thanks |
Answer: | You don't need to replace the sponges. you just rinse and reuse the sponges that come with it. |
Question: | How many 1.5" balls are in 2 qts |
Answer: | Yes, you should be able to do that, but carbon media will kill the good bacteria you need for your tank |

Answer: | For this to work you need water level up to the top of the uplift tube with an air pump or powerhead |
Question: | Any idea how much of these I would need for a 400 gal |
Answer: | It depends on the size of the aquarium. I'm currently running two of these filters on a double outlet pump rated at 60 gallon capacity. One is in a 40 gallon breeder tank and the other is placed in a 55 gallon. The water quality is crystal clear and the fish are all thriving. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is this bio media absorb the water |
Answer: | Inside the sponge is a small tube to bring air to the bottom of the sponge. I suppose you might be able to cut that out to fit an air stone. |
Question: | Does it raise water GH value |
Answer: | You would be fine with 1 box, you would even just do 1 box of the 2 quart size. 1 quart will handle 100gallons. You can't have too much though, so doesn't hurt to oversize as you'll only grow as much bacteria as your tank waste demand is. Another person suggested the block too. The spheres or the plate are both good for denitrification. The Block does denitrification and can also help with some reduce nitrates as well. |

Note:
- 1For the reef tank, we suggest to complete it with Jaubert system or Berlin system as these bio-media lack anaerobe. Do not use these bio-media as single filter media when build up a reef tank filter system.
- Rinse these bio blocks thoroughly before use. Please remember to rinse them in aquarium water not tap water.
- Replenish only ⅓ at one time to allow proper seeding.
- It usually takes 1-3 weeks for bacteia to grow. Thus, we recommend to replace partial media filters every 3-5 months.
- It is better to place filter pads on top to filter out debris. This will prolong the service life of filter media.
