11 best bio balls
Bio balls are a type of filter media used in aquarium filtration systems. They are a critical component in maintaining a healthy aquatic environment in fish tanks and are typically found in the category of filter accessories in the context of pet supplies and aquarium equipment. Here's what you need to know about bio balls:
Purpose: Bio balls are designed to provide biological filtration in aquariums. They serve as a habitat for beneficial bacteria that help break down and remove harmful substances like ammonia and nitrite from the water.
Biological Filtration: In an aquarium, biological filtration is one of the three main types of filtration, alongside mechanical and chemical filtration. Beneficial bacteria colonize the surface of bio balls and convert ammonia (produced by fish waste and uneaten food) into less harmful nitrite and eventually nitrate.
Shape and Design: Bio balls are typically round, small plastic balls with a highly porous surface area. This porous structure provides ample surface area for beneficial bacteria to attach and thrive.
Aquarium Compatibility: Bio balls are suitable for use in various types of aquarium filters, including canister filters, wet/dry filters, and trickle filters. They can be used in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
Aerobic and Anaerobic Bacteria: Bio balls support the growth of both aerobic (oxygen-loving) and anaerobic (oxygen-hating) bacteria. This allows for a comprehensive breakdown of nitrogenous compounds in the water column.
Maintenance: Over time, bio balls can become clogged with debris and biological waste. It's essential to periodically clean or replace them to ensure their effectiveness. Avoid rinsing bio balls in tap water, as this can kill the beneficial bacteria. Instead, use aquarium water for cleaning.
Placement: Bio balls are typically placed in the biological filtration compartment of the filter, which comes after the mechanical and chemical filtration stages. This positioning allows the water to flow through the bio balls, allowing the beneficial bacteria to process waste.
Water Quality: Proper biological filtration using bio balls helps maintain stable water quality by reducing harmful ammonia and nitrite levels, which can be toxic to fish and other aquatic life.
Compatibility with Other Media: Bio balls can be used in conjunction with other filter media, such as sponge filters, ceramic rings, or filter floss, to create a well-rounded filtration system that addresses mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration needs.
Sizing: Bio balls come in various sizes, and the choice of size may depend on the specific filter and aquarium size. It's important to select bio balls that fit your filter properly.
In summary, bio balls are a crucial component of aquarium filtration systems, providing biological filtration by hosting beneficial bacteria that help maintain water quality in fish tanks. Regular maintenance and proper placement of bio balls are essential to ensure their effectiveness in promoting a healthy aquatic environment.
Below you can find our editor's choice of the best bio balls on the market- OUTSTANDING FILTRATION! Each bio ball is covered in spines to dramatically increase the surface area of each ball to nearly 2 square feet providing space for a massive number of beneficial bacteria to colonize. These good bacteria break down harmful waste keeping your aquatic friends safe. You will receive approximately 300 1-1/2-inch bioballs in a ready to use black mesh zippered bag. Just rinse and use.
- TOUGH AND UNIQUE! Our bio balls’ spherical shape and precise spine placement permits them to pack tightly into any shape or filter type without losing surface area. Molded from high density plastic, these balls are lightweight but tough enough to keep their shape and will never degrade or wear out. Bio balls can be used loose or in the mesh bag with plastic zipper in which they are packaged.
- TRUSTED POND MEDIA! Our Bio balls are 100% polypropylene making them a safe reliable bio filter media for fresh and saltwater. They are manufactured for use in koi and water garden ponds, freshwater fish tanks, saltwater aquariums, aquaponics, fish hatcheries and much more.
- SUPERIOR TO LAVA ROCK: Over time, porous lava rock becomes clogged with debris decreasing its surface area so that its ability to house and grow good beneficial bacteria plummets. Our pond bio balls’ uniquely spaced spines allow most debris to pass right through them. Lava rock has tiny pores which make it difficult to clean while bio balls in most applications never need cleaning. A bag of wet lava rock is many times heavier than our pond balls.
- EASY TO CLEAN - When organic waste builds up in the bioballs, they can be gently rinsed in dechlorinated wate to remove debris and refresh the bioballs. Use our FilterFIrst, dual density bonded filter pad, or water polishing pad to capture large particles before they can be trapped in the bioballs.
User questions & answers
Question: | Do you put the bio balls in the filter box with or without them in the bag |
Answer: | You can put our bio balls inside of a tank and beneficial bacteria will grow on them. Typically you want to place the bio balls in a chamber or bag after a filter pad. The filter pad will trap most of the free floating debris before getting to the bio balls. Thanks for asking - Laurren at Aquatic Experts |
Question: | Will these balls keep the pond free of algae, I have only plants in my 50 gal pond |
Answer: | Yes, this pump big enough for this filter |
Question: | How many bio balls do I need for a 100 gallon tank in a 5 gallon sump |
Answer: | I bought my filter last year and the bulb I believe is not working I replaced it and it was broken and the new one is not cleaning the water I am hoping to get a new part for the top where the bulb goes right now I am very disappointed with this there is no number to contact anyone |
Question: | Can i throw the bio balls inside the tank water |
Answer: | When I received my filter, there was 3 connections on the filter tank body and 4 screw-on hose adapters that you had to cut in order to fit the hose size you desired. The 3 connections on the filter tank were inlet from the pump, outlet from filter to water feature ( or whatever), and a fitting for a hose when the backwash feature was utilized. I personally used the clear adaptor for the pump outlet so I could just glance at the filter and make sure the little spinner thing was spinning. The glass seal cover I used at the end of the backwash hose. It doesn't say in the instructions, but the backwash hose must be sealed at its end away from the filter or you will empty your pond eventually. As I read this back, it seems a little complicated, but really it's not. Your backwash hose will use 2 connectors (one at each end, duh), and one connector for inlet and one for outlet. I hope this helps you. |

User questions & answers
Question: | could I put the bio balls in my canister and the ceramic in the hang on the back |
Answer: | Hi, not sure if (hang) was meant to say (Bag). Personally, I found this set to be perfect and have continued to use them for some tine now. I have the bio balls loose within one changer of filtering media, and the ceramic rings inside a storage net bag to help keep it simple when time to clean filter, and in their own chamber of filtering media. Here is a tip on keeping your tank water crystal clear. Consider this to replace those expensive filter media... (Aquarium Filter Pad - Premium True Dual Density 12" by 72" by 3/4 to 1" Aquarium Filter Media Roll for Crystal Clear Water ) provided by Aquatic Experts. Good luck and also - focus on using filtered water, to extend the life of the media. |
Question: | do these balls come in comparable sizes to hydroton? That would be awesome |
Answer: | They are a bit bigger probly a 1/2 inch in diameter |
Question: | Can the pouches be placed in a saltwater sump? Are the zippers metal |
Answer: | Yes it can have them in mine, the zippers are metal but they are coated in some type of rubber or powder coat. They are fine for a saltwater or freshwater system |
Question: | Do i add both bags of balls and rings to the back of my biocube 32gal or do i mix them up and add only 1 bag |
Answer: | You could really do either, but I think that you will want to go from coarse to fine in terms of water flow. I have these arranged so that the balls sit in a tray over the rings and allow the water to disperse down onto the next level of rings. If anything "big" comes through the filter I know the bioballs will catch it and not clog up. The rings would be slightly more prone, thought it would be hard to really block them to the point of clogging. I also find it easier to rinse them if it isn't mixed, but to each his own. I don't think you can really screw this up. After looking at the aquarium itself, I think you may end up finding that you only want one, or the other and not both. I'd vote the rings only if it were me. More surface area for the biological filtering. The balls really do a better job of dispersing water over a wide area, such as a wet/dry filter sump. Way more bang for the buck inthe rings for what you are doing. |

Question: | Could I put the bag of these in my koi pond skimmer box to work for bio growth |
Answer: | As long as you need to. |
Question: | How many would I need to fill three trays in a Sunsun 704b |
Answer: | The base is heavy, yes. I don't know about the hose but I believe you don't need to remove it. I would recommend getting the smaller jiffy steamer with the plastic water container instead of this. This one is not much more powerful and very cumbersome. |
Question: | Does this need to go into a sump or can you just place them in a tank to eventually use in a new tank for quick cycling |
Answer: | If you want a good, reasonably-priced floor steamer, I would recommend a Shark. I've had one for a couple of years now, and I love it! I paid well less than $100 for it; though I don't remember exactly what I paid, I believe it was even less than $50 on sale at a local big box. |
