14 best salinity hydrometers

A salinity hydrometer is a device used in the context of aquariums, particularly for maintaining proper salinity levels in marine or saltwater aquariums. It is categorized under aquarium hydrometers and is relevant to the care of fish and other aquatic pets.

The purpose of a salinity hydrometer is to measure the concentration of salt in the water. Maintaining the correct salinity is crucial for the health and well-being of marine organisms, as different species have specific requirements for salt levels. Too much or too little salt in the water can adversely affect the osmoregulation of fish and other aquatic life.

A typical salinity hydrometer consists of a float or a weighted gauge that is calibrated to indicate the specific gravity or salinity of the water. To use it, the hydrometer is gently placed in the aquarium water, and the reading is taken where the surface of the water intersects with the calibrated scale. This reading provides the aquarium owner with information about the salinity of the water.

Accurate monitoring of salinity is crucial in marine aquariums, as it impacts the overall health of the ecosystem within the tank. Using a reliable salinity hydrometer is essential for ensuring that the salt concentration is within the optimal range for the specific marine organisms being kept in the aquarium.

Aquarists and hobbyists often use salinity hydrometers as part of their regular maintenance routine to make necessary adjustments to the salt levels in the aquarium, helping to create a stable and healthy environment for their aquatic pets.

User questions & answers

Question: It says "fill with salty water and allow it to sit for 24 hrs". anyone following that and find it helpful? my new one is off
Answer: I purchased mine for testing the spoil pH and watering needs and they both seem to be very accurate. I do not know how accurate it is for light testing. I do not know what your application is for, but if it's to see how much light is present for growing a garden, then you need a minimum of 6 hrs of sunlight a day, preferably 8. Of course it also depends on what you are trying to grow, some plants need much more than others.
Question: Can it be left inside the aquarium for continuous readings
Answer: Since soil most often is in/close to neutral state (with pH value of 7), when you use it to test the pH value of soil, it is highly likely that you find the needle in display window stay still (because the default pH value is set at somewhere between 7 and 8) . The needle will not swing substantially unless the meter in soil with strong acidity or alkalinity. Customers sometimes are misled by this appearance and hence regard the tester as a defective unit by mistake. Here are the steps of How To Use this soil meter: Step 1: Gently wiped the probes all the way up and down with dry cloth a few times before use Step 2: Push the switch to MOIST or PH or LIGHT position Step 3: Stick the probes into the soil 4-6 inches (2/3 of the probes) or more deep Step 4: Adjust the position of the probe until the pointer on the dial swing slightly Step 5: Note moisture/pH/light level in the dial Step 6: Remove probes from soil and wipe clean with dry cloth after each use Tips: This soil meter is designed to measure moisture and ph level of soil, so it CAN ONLY be used in soil, it CANNOT be used to test any liquids, such as pure water, lemon juice, vinegar and so on, or the probes may be damaged.
Question: I want this to test my fresh water aquarium i fill with softener water. Will it work
Answer: Yes there is a small piece of sponge material in the cap that you can apply storage solution whenever you plan to leave the cap on. I recommend that if you will be using your pen daily, you get a small glass cup ( the 100ml measuring cups work ideal) and keep storage solution in this cup and keep pen placed in this as opposed to removing and replacing cap continuously. I generally mix 20ml of storage solution with 30ml of distilled water to keep in cup for pen.
Question: Does this work with swimming pools
Answer: These are great pens for the hobbyist just remember when you do not see the check mark on your pH pen or on your PPM EC conductivity bluelab pen it is time to calibrate if you do not see this check mark displayed on either pin on the screen calibrate. I also recommend using the 7.0 bluelab calibration solution followed up by the 4.0 bluelab calibration solution to get a more accurate reading of the pH solution. Also use blue lab calibration solution for your conductivity meter as well these meters will last a very long time I had mine for almost 4 years and still in good shape keep your meters clean keep your pH bulb moist in store in the pH storage solution that is made by blue lab. Never let the bulb go dry if you do it will take 24 hours or it is good to give 24 hours to rehydrate your pH bulb. And if I'm not mistaken on the bottles the calibration solution of either your conductivity meter solution for calibration or your pH pen calibration solution it says on the bottle after opening don't use after three months I don't know if this matters a whole lot or not but I've used my solution over three months plenty of time and no noticeable difference in this. I guess the main thing is to keep your pH pen glass bulb hydrated I believe that this is probably the most important thing when owning a blue lab pH testing pin. If there is anyone to add to this conversation or to give me any advice that's positive please do so I am always willing to learn and listen so please if anyone has any experience with these pins other than me and something that I may not have mentioned or know please tell me or leave a review thank you I hope this has been helpful. And please stay positive with positive feedback just remember people there are no stupid questions and no mistakes only lessons thank you.

User questions & answers

Question: This is appropriate for, say, pickle brine concentration, correct? What is the affect if the temp of brine is not 60°F
Answer: mine only goes to 70% so no it wont work because isopropyl alcohol is 140%
Question: Does this instrument come with a calibration report showing corrections for various test points
Answer: Nope, it doesn't. I just tried it.
Question: will this instrument work for salt brine for road treatment
Answer: Yes, sort of. This IS for testing ethanol, however, it is NOT really precise. It can ONLY measure fairly well to 70% ABV @ 60°. It CANNOT measure ABV any higher than that with ANY precision. 70% ABV does not make good fuel. Use a glass hydrometer or an electronic (much more expensive but precise) one if you need precision. This product is pretty much made to guestimate homemade alcoholic products for consumption. Cheers! It works for me!
Question: Instructions? I'm sure its self evident to most but not to me
Answer: yes

Different Kinds of Hydrometers

A hydrometer is an instrument used to measure the density of a liquid as compared to that of water. Hydrometers usually consist of a calibrated glass tube ending in a weighted glass sphere that makes the tube stand upright when placed in a liquid. The lower the density of the liquid, the deeper the tube sinks. Depending upon the intended use hydrometers can vary in size and will feature different types of scales.

What are the different kinds of hydrometers and when do you use them?

1. Specific Gravity hydrometers can be used for almost any liquid. Specific Gravity is a dimensionless unit defined as the ratio of density of the material to the density of water. If the density of the substance of interest and the reference substance (water) are known in the same units (e.g., both in grams/centimeter3 or pounds/feet3), then the specific gravity of the substance is equal to its density divided by that of the reference substance (water =1 grams/centimeter3).

2. Baume hydrometers are calibrated to measure specific gravity on evenly spaced scales; one scale is for liquids heavier than water, and the other is for liquids lighter than water.

3. Brix (Bx) hydrometers is for determining the percentage of weight by sucrose. One degree Brix is 1 gram of sucrose in 100 grams of solution and represents the strength of the solution as percentage by weight (% w/w) (strictly speaking, by mass). If the solution contains dissolved solids other than pure sucrose, then the °Bx only approximates the dissolved solid content. The °Bx is traditionally used in the wine, sugar, fruit juice, and honey industries.

4. API hydrometers, also known as The American Petroleum Institute index, is a measure of how heavy or light a petroleum liquid is compared to water. If its API gravity is greater than 10, it is lighter and floats on water; if less than 10, it is heavier and sinks. API gravity is thus an inverse measure of the relative density of a petroleum liquid and the density of water, but it is used to compare the relative densities of petroleum liquids. For example, if one petroleum liquid floats on another and is therefore less dense, it has a greater API gravity. Although mathematically, API gravity has no units (see the formula below), it is nevertheless referred to as being in 'degrees'. API gravity is gradated in degrees on a hydrometer instrument. The API scale was designed so that most values would fall between 10 and 70 API gravity degrees.

5. Alcohol Proof hydrometers are used for distilling and rectifying and for waste liquors.

6. Isopropyl Alcohol hydrometers measure percent by volume of isopropyl alcohol.

7. Sodium Chloride hydrometers measure saturation and concentration of sodium chloride.

8. Salt Brine hydrometers are graduated in percent of either saturation of sodium chloride in water, or by weight of sodium chloride.

9. Calcium Chloride Salometers (a hydrometer for indicating the percentage of salt in a solution) are for determining the percentage of saturation, specific gravity or freezing point of CaCl2.

10. Draft Survey hydrometers determine the apparent density of sea/fresh water.

The cylinder should be at least 1 inch taller than the hydrometer with a minimum diameter of 50mm.

When measuring with a hydrometer you should have an idea of what reading you are looking for. If the reading does not fall within the range of the hydrometer you should use a hydrometer that includes the expected reading. Adjust the range up or down depending on if the hydrometer sinks or is overly buoyant.

What is the proper way to store hydrometers?

Hydrometers should be stored in clean, dry, safe places. They also should not be subjected to extreme temperatures.

User questions & answers

Question: Unit doesn’t stay calibrated any more still under 1 year how can I get replacement
Answer: Suction tube will be fine if it's a freshly opened bottle
Question: Is the eyepiece adjustable to allow you to focus on the values you're looking at
Answer: First, you would have to define “easily readable”. I have terrible eyesight and bifocals. I need my son to read the numbers because they are so tiny through the eyepiece. It measures quiet accurately and is the gold standard for saltwater aquariums. However, I don’t know if it would work quite as well on a ppt scale. The device measures in specific gravity numbers and ppt. It does read to 0 on the ppt side, but I can’t be sure if it will be that specific for you. You may want to start with the cheaper hydrometer or a more expensive electronic reader. Check out WikiHow’s How to measure salinity. It gives directions on 3 different ways.
Question: Is suction tube long enough or I need to buy wine thief as well
Answer: I have had the same problem and you can calibrate it with distilled water, but mine was still off by 2ppm regardless.
Question: Hoping to test salt level in a fresh water pond which requires 5 ppt, would this be easily readable with this device
Answer: I don't understand your question - can you re-phrase it?

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with the tube as advertised in the picture
Answer: It does not... any calibration is factory set and not adjustable...it is actuate... .it is set to test water salt levels..
Question: What's the difference between this and refractometer
Answer: it should work with any salt (sodium) brine solution.
Question: Would this work to measure a pool water temperature? TIA
Answer: Hi Kimberly! My name is Mike at Bel-Art/H-B Instrument & SP Scienceware. Sorry, no, it isn't self evident - don't worry - instructions should have been there. Please email me ad I will send the proper instructions and conversion tables you way. I hope this answered your question, but if not, please email me at [email protected]
Question: What temperature whs this hydrometer calibrated at
Answer: This is primarily used for measuring the ABV of Distilled spirits. If you were checking the alcohol content before any other additives, it may work for what you need. Once you start adding other ingredients, it may distort your results. Also, dark colored liquids can distort your results as well. Even if you used a float proofing hydrometer, you would need to check alcohol content before adding other ingredients. Thickening agents will distort results.
