13 best live plants for betta fish
Live plants can be a beneficial addition to a betta fish aquarium, not only for aesthetic reasons but also for the overall health and well-being of your betta. Here's what you should know about live plants for betta fish:
Aesthetic Enhancement: Live plants add a natural and visually appealing element to your betta fish tank. They come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, allowing you to create a beautiful underwater landscape.
Natural Habitat: Bettas are native to slow-moving waters with plenty of vegetation in Southeast Asia. Adding live plants to their aquarium can replicate their natural habitat and make them feel more comfortable.
Water Quality: Live plants can help maintain water quality by absorbing harmful substances such as ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites. This natural filtration process contributes to a healthier environment for your betta.
Oxygen Production: Through photosynthesis, live plants release oxygen into the water, which is essential for your betta's respiration. This oxygenation is particularly important in aquariums with limited surface area for gas exchange.
Shelter and Hideouts: Live plants provide hiding spots and shelter for bettas. They can reduce stress by giving your fish places to retreat and rest, especially if you have other tank mates or a busy aquarium environment.
Natural Behaviors: Bettas often interact with live plants by resting on leaves, exploring them, or even building bubble nests underneath them. These behaviors are essential for their mental and physical stimulation.
Algae Control: A well-planted aquarium can help prevent excessive algae growth by competing for nutrients and blocking out light that algae need to thrive.
When selecting live plants for your betta fish tank, consider the following:
Compatibility: Ensure that the plants you choose are suitable for the water parameters in your aquarium (e.g., pH, temperature, water hardness). Most tropical aquarium plants are suitable for bettas.
Lighting: Different plants have varying light requirements. Choose plants that match the type of lighting you have in your tank, whether it's low, moderate, or high intensity.
Maintenance: Some plants require more care than others. Research the specific care requirements of the plants you select, including trimming and fertilization needs.
Substrate: Some plants anchor themselves in the substrate, while others can be attached to driftwood or rocks. Make sure your chosen plants are compatible with your aquarium's substrate.
Quarantine: Quarantine new live plants before adding them to your betta's tank to prevent introducing pests or diseases.
Live plants can create a thriving and visually appealing environment for your betta fish while contributing to their overall well-being.However, it's essential to research and choose plants that are suitable for your specific tank conditions and be prepared to provide the necessary care to keep them healthy and vibrant.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will they grow in a tank with Tiny rocks as a base |
Answer: | The rhizome can’t be buried so don’t bury them. What I do is drop them into the tank... either you glue it to a pc of wood or rock and drop it on. It’ll sit ontop ok? Of your rocks or gravel..... then you add liquid fertilizer into the water to feed them .... 1x a week. And they need light also. And they’ll be ok. Mine got too much loght and turned brown tho. But they will be ok if you do it right. |
Question: | Will these plants survive shipping during winter temps |
Answer: | They can survive cold-water tanks, ( as low as 60s°F) and I would think they would be okay to be shipped with temps in the 40s° F. But I wouldn't count on them surviving being shipped in winter temperatures below freezing, unless the seller ships with insulation and heat packs. |
Question: | Does anyone know where the seller ships from |
Answer: | Mine shipped out of Monterey Park, CA |
Question: | Are these snail free |
Answer: | Yes. They arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. Beautiful plants |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have to use a plant a fully grown plant? Or can you plant/grow seeds and then put the growing roots in the holes |
Answer: | My son use a fully grown plant . He bought small Peace Lily then he took all soil off and washed the roots before put the root in the hole. |
Question: | Is the fish supposed to eat the roots |
Answer: | No but... they eat the build up on the roots doesn't hurt the plant or fish BUT...does say need to feed protein pellets as well. Hardest part for me was getting the roots through the holes. |
Question: | what plants or herbs can be grown |
Answer: | if you look up aquaponics you will find more information about what types of plants can be grown. We are growing herbs and a bamboo stem. In order for the plan or herbs to be grown they have to be already growing with roots so the roots can be immersed in the water |
Question: | could i keep a glass catfish in this |
Answer: | No. Ghost/glass catfish are schooling fish and need to be kept in groups of six or more to avoid stress death. You'll need to look for a 30+ gallon to humanely care for them. A mere half gallon like this isn't suitable for ANY fish, let alone a schooling species. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this plant ok to put in a 125 koi tank |
Answer: | Yes, it is okay to put it there. However, Koi fish is known for messing around with the substrate of their environment. They may not stay in place if that happens. |
Question: | will this be good for a fountain ? - we have problems with algae in the fountain so wonder if this will keep the algae down.? No fish |
Answer: | Not really because these plants go in the water. If algae is your problem then sunlight is more than likely your enemy. You could try some floating plants like Java moss. But I’m not sure it will fix the problem entirely if it is an outdoor fountain |
Question: | How long after receiving it do I need to plant it |
Answer: | You don't have to plant it. U just rinse it off and put it in water. Just let it float. |
Question: | I bought this Java Fern and it came with tiny black specks all over the leaves, can anyone tell me what those are? don’t look like potential rhizomes |
Answer: | Mine did the same thing and I tried to scrub them off, then my sister who is great with plants told me they were BABIES! Sure enough, the ones I didn't scrub off turned in to new java fern plants! Let them grow a bit (they will develop leaves and roots) and then gently pull them off and plant them. Congrats! |
- 【Double leaf design】: the bigger leaf approx. 2.36''x1.77'', the smaller leaf approx. 1.97''x1.50'',ideal for betta fish playing

- 【High quality material】: Featherweight, durable and safe 、long lasting materials - Convenient and practical. The leaves will sway with the waves.
- Bettas have an organ called a labyrinth, which allows them to breathe air as well as getting oxygen from the water via their gills. that's the reason why they also come up to the water surface and relax. Leaf hammocks make great places for your betta to take a short break after swimming
- For first time betta owners, your fish may not like to rest on the hammock but most bettas lik e to have some cover in their environment. They may just hover below it to rest, which is making them happy too. If your betta ignores it, try relocating in the tank.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this need to be buried or is it similar to Java fern where it does best in a rock or driftwood |
Answer: | Everything I read about these plants say that burying the roots can actually harm them. I used some fishing line and tethered mine to a piece of driftwood. The roots have expanded pretty well and the plant is doing great. (just added a review with a few pictures to show you what I mean) |
Question: | Does anyone have a photo of this |
Answer: | I do...check out my recent review...photos are attached. |
Question: | Does this plant come potted |
Answer: | This plant isn’t potted. But it is a nice plant. |
Question: | About how tall are these plants |
Answer: | Mine came at about 6 to 7 inches tall, beautifully green with nice clean white roots. Do not bury this plant when you put it in the tank, just anchor it's roots in the substrate leaving the Rhizome exposed, it does not like to be buried. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this plant be used in a salt water fish tank |
Answer: | No freshwater only |
Question: | Are these not low-light plants? Mine turned completely translucent after a few days, the leaves are thinner than cellophane tape. Is this melting |
Answer: | Yes, what you saw was melting, this is normal when introducing plants to a new tank, sometime aggressive trimming of the roots or replanting may also cause this. The plant typically comes back from this fine but may be a bit shorter and will need time to get back to original height. Most sword plants are grown emersed (out of water) for faster growth and production when being sold like this. The emersed growth leaves are not capable of living submerged(under water) and the plant goes through a phase where it has to adapt growing new under water leaves while shedding the air breathing leaves. |
Question: | Will this live and thrive in a gravel substrate with about 2-3 inch thickness |
Answer: | Yes it will. Have had to trim it often. |
Question: | do you just bury the pot in the gravel or do you remove and push into gravel |
Answer: | I allowed the plant to adjust to the water for a couple of days in its original pot and then planted in the gravel. It rooted very well, initially lost some leaves but since then has grown new ones. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the lava rock anubias good with low light (led and natural light only |
Answer: | They should do fine with led light. |
Question: | Is the rock and plant supposed to detach from each other? Mine did the other day and now the plant is just floating around the tank |
Answer: | I don't think so. My plant and rock have stayed attached and are have done good once the roots got established. |
Question: | Is there a heating pack to keep the plant the right temperature during extreme hot or cold temperatures |
Answer: | I don't remember anything to keep it hot or cold. |
Question: | How do I get all the paresites off of it |
Answer: | Try spraying with hydrogen peroxide (3%). Let sit for a few minutes and rinse the plant. Repeat if needed. Plants seem to do fine but the pests cannot survive the treatment. If you get snails, just know that they are a carrier of a parasite called skin flukes. Treat your tank immediately. Once you see signs of that parasite, it is too late. A lesson I've learned the HARD way. Another tip, use a separate container to start your plants. This way you can see the snails before adding the plants to your setup. It's a troublesome step, but totally worth the effort. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would the pink ocean centerpiece be too small for the 60L |
Answer: | I don’t know of a Biorb that holds 60L. There’s a 15L/4 gallon for around $100 and one that’s 30L/8 gallon for around $150. I am referring to the spheres. This set is a little crowded in the smaller version and fits the larger one well. I have the smaller one and just leave a few pieces out. |
Question: | does the stone centerpiece fit around the bubble tube |
Answer: | I don’t have that particular decoration but all the BiOrb centerpieces I’ve seen do go around the bubble tube |
Question: | Are they silk plants or plastic |
Answer: | In 2020, there are 13 different styles. They're ranging from a variety of plastic styles to silk. |
Question: | Will the small size not tear my bettas fins |
Answer: | I have a male delta tail betta and purchased the small set for him. About three days after placing these in his tank he had a long tear in his tail fin. I have since trimmed away the small plastic spiky parts that stick out around the base of these plants. His tail fin is almost completely healed and no new tears since. |
