14 best floating pond plants
Floating pond plants are aquatic plants that grow on the surface of ponds, aquariums, or other aquatic environments without being rooted in the substrate. These plants are not only aesthetically pleasing but also serve several essential functions in aquatic ecosystems. Here's what you need to know about floating pond plants:
Aesthetic Enhancement: Floating pond plants add beauty and natural aesthetics to aquatic environments. Their lush green foliage and colorful flowers can create a visually appealing and serene atmosphere in ponds or aquariums.
Natural Shade: Floating plants provide shade to the water's surface, which can help regulate water temperature and reduce the growth of algae by limiting the amount of sunlight that penetrates the water.
Habitat for Fish and Wildlife: These plants offer refuge and breeding sites for fish and other aquatic organisms. Fish may hide among the floating roots and foliage, while amphibians and insects may use them as egg-laying sites.
Oxygenation: Like all plants, floating pond plants undergo photosynthesis, releasing oxygen into the water during the day. This oxygenation can benefit fish and other aquatic life by increasing the dissolved oxygen content in the water.
Water Filtration: Floating plants help improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which can contribute to water pollution and algal blooms. By doing so, they act as natural water purifiers.
Easy Maintenance: Floating pond plants are relatively low-maintenance compared to submerged or rooted plants. They don't require planting in substrate, and their growth is not constrained by pots or containers.
Species Variety: There are various species of floating pond plants to choose from, each with its unique appearance and characteristics. Common examples include Water Lettuce, Water Hyacinth, Duckweed, and Watermeal.
Propagation: Many floating pond plants reproduce quickly, making them suitable for naturalistic ponds or aquariums. They can be propagated by division or through the release of daughter plants, known as "runners" or "offsets."
Legal Considerations: In some regions, certain floating pond plants, such as Water Hyacinth, may be considered invasive species and regulated or prohibited due to their potential to spread rapidly and disrupt local ecosystems.
Care: To keep floating pond plants healthy, provide them with adequate light and nutrients. Regularly remove any dead or decaying plant material to prevent water quality issues.
Compatibility: It's essential to consider the compatibility of floating pond plants with other aquatic life in your pond or aquarium. Some fish may nibble on the roots or leaves of these plants, so research species interactions before introducing them.
In summary, floating pond plants offer both aesthetic and functional benefits to aquatic environments. They contribute to water quality, provide shelter for aquatic life, and enhance the overall beauty of ponds and aquariums. When properly cared for, these plants can create a balanced and harmonious ecosystem in aquatic settings.

The leaves remain dry while the long roots dangle freely in the water. The plants shade the water and the floating roots leach nutrients from the pond, which helps prevent algae growth. Water lettuce grows naturally as a tropical perennial. In colder climates, grow the plant as an annual or bring it indoors to overwinter. Your fish will love them. They will appreciate the shade, shelter, and food provided. This plant controls algae and increases oxygen in the water. They grow extremely fast, especially with lots of sun exposure. Answer: | Mine seem to be thriving just floating about, not planted. |
Question: | Can they ship to California |

Question: | Will these plant survive over Northern Michigan winter |
Answer: | No. In states where it gets below freezing they will not survive winters. I have to replace mine every spring. This winter, I'm going to try to keep 2 or 3 inside (in a tub of water). Normally, they multiply quickly over the summer, so that should be enough to replace them next spring. I don't know if I will be successful or not. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you verify that this is actually lemna minor? another vendor just sent me azola moss, claiming to be duckweed |
Answer: | Yes...my daughter had to bring it in to her science teacher to verify that it was duckweed before she started her science project. |
Question: | Why did I receive seeds |
Answer: | Contact seller, perhaps it was a mistake. Ignore Nightstalker, that comment makes no sense, these are sold as live plants, not seeds. |
Question: | Which amount is sufficient enough to cover water surface in a long 20 gallon tank |
Answer: | The 20 gallon long tank demensions are 12"x30". So the surface area is 12*30*25.4*25.4 = 230000 square mm. If each average duckweed covers 10 square mm. Theoretically you would need 23000 duckweed plants to completely cover the whole surface of the tank. The other way to obtain the same result is to buy a small clean culture (let's say 200), under optimum condition, duckweed would double every 36 hours, so it woult take less than 2 weeks to reach the needed number of plants to cover the surface of the tank. |
Question: | what does it mean by placing packing in "treated (dechlorinated) water |
Answer: | "Place contents of package in a container with treated (dechlorinated) water for up to 5 minutes, discard any melted or damaged leaves." Means that once you have received the Duckweed (lemna minor), place them in a cup or container with water so that you can check for any damaged plants and remove roots that have fallen off. This is to ensure that your aquarium remains clean and undisturbed by any damaged or melted plants. "treated (dechlorinated) water" is tap water that has been treated with products such as "Aqua Safe" that removes chlorine from the water for aquariums. You could also use water from your aquariums, place it in a container, cup, or bowl and then place the Duckweed (Lemna minor) to inspect for damaged or melted plants before placing into your desired location. |

Advice from the Pond: ~Be clear:~Look beneath the surface:~Shore up friendships:~Take time to reflect:~Be full of life!
Water Hawthorn is a spectacular plant to add to the water garden for it offers something hard to find, blooms and growth all winter long. If the pond is not frozen you will have dark green oblong leaves 3 –6 inches long. The leaves lie flat on the water surface surrounding sweet vanilla scented white flowers. You will have lots of flowers all of which will have rich dark black spots. Some say the flowers smell like hawthorn, thus the common name of Water Hawthorn. The leaves provide great coverage for your fish when most other plants are dormant. Question: | Will these grow in a 30 gallon cast iron pot outdoors, with no fish or other plants |
Answer: | I'm not sure if it'll grow outdoors without fish. I tried to grow it in a 1/4 gallon tank without fish next to the window, but it never grew. The only thing I noticed was what appeared to be a snail or something develop. |
Question: | Can these be used in outdoor fish ponds |
Answer: | I don't see why not, as long as it's a good temperature for them. |
Question: | Are they pest snail free |
Answer: | The batch I received were free of any pest or eggs. Also if you are worried about unwanted visitors I would suggest investing in assassin snails as one can never be -too- sure. |
Question: | Will these be good in my water fountain? I see that its best when the leaves are dry on top. What if the fountain splashes water on top of them |
Answer: | This plant prefers calm water. If there is a fountain in your pond, then the size of the fountain is important. If a small fountain is okay. If the fountain is large - it produces a strong current throughout the reservoir - then this plant will not work. |

Question: | What can I use for water Lillie’s my koi eat them |
Answer: | So do mine, I use these for hyacinth, it is not deep enough for lilies. My koi love to eat roots or break off anything they can get to. So these work great for anything that can be on the surface of the water. Normal pond owners just let those float supposedly, but if you want to protect the root system from being decimated, put it in these. I use old bio balls as a base so the roots have even more space to grow, before they are eaten. It’s not a matter of your fish being hungry they are just being fish. |
Question: | what size pot can I put in this floating container |
Answer: | The diameter of the inside of this floating container is 6" and the depth is 7".I hope this is helpful.:)Lisa |
Question: | Can this planter be anchored so it doesn't float to the edge of the pond but stay somewhat centered |
Answer: | I have two and both came with a looped string that I can wedge between rocks to keep the planter in place. The string is 8-10" long so the basket stays close to the pond edge. Otherwise all my plants would end up in a pile due to the water flow from the fountain. |
Question: | Can you use this for water lilies |
Answer: | I don't think I would. Lilies like to have their roots lower than their leaves and stems. Water lilies also do not like moving water so keep them away from water falls and fountains |

Question: | Are these floating plants or do they have to be put in soil |
Answer: | Floating plants |
Question: | The dnr has prohihibited this plant in wisconsin. why do you ship there |
Answer: | I live in WI and it shipped here. I mistakenly had it in my indoor aquarium and the plant died. I’ll bet this plant is invasive for WI and not recommended to be in ponds and possibly be transferred to lakes. |
Question: | Will this plant be too big in a 2.5 gallon tank which is home to my half-moon betta fish Teal |
Answer: | Yes, this will be too big. You can get floating mini-lettuce for that if you are looking for floating plants. |
Question: | How many orders would you recommend for a 22 foot diameter above ground pool? Could a small number multiply for full cover |
Answer: | These multiply incredibly quickly. I don't even know how they got in my pond but they did. They covered half of my pond's surface (2,000 gallons in a few months-choking out the waterlilies and calla Lillies (which have yet to return). My poor fish only had a half of the pond to swim in. I was not able to remove them myself -- their roots are long and pervasive. I hired a handy man to get it all out. Now that spring is here I am keeping a tight eye out to make sure I don't have a repeat of last summer. Oh, and the flowers are not that pretty and don't last very long. In my opinion go with Lillies. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how much room should I allow for one plant? Thanks |
Answer: | The more soil a plant has, the larger and fuller the plant. Water lilies are usually started in one or two gallon pots. A four to five gallon pot is better if the pond has space for larger pots. A four and a half-gallon pot measures sixteen inches in diameter by seven inches deep. |
Question: | Can they be in a pond with goldfish? My goldfish have eaten all the other plants I have tried so far |
Answer: | I had this for a couple of months and it lived pretty well with my goldfish. Unfortunately, I then introduced turtles into my pond, and they ate all of the entire plant before I knew it. I would like to clarify that my goldfish are only a couple of inches long and are not really big at the moment. |
Question: | What are the lighting requirements |
Answer: | Full sun if you want flowers. A minimum of six hours a day, more if you can. |
Question: | I live in florida on a lake. there are wild water lillies there. can i plant it there |
Answer: | I planted my water lily rhizome in a pot and then walked it into our pond (pond size aprox. 5 acres) to place it under the water. It did well for this first year, I had a few dozen lily pads and 2 blooms. Currently, our pond is frozen. I’m sure it will be back this spring/summer season. I have planted lily rhizomes before and they take off and multiply for years. My pond does not have wild water lilies. |

Product description
PREVENTS PLANT DAMAGE FROM FISH: This Fish Barrier / Floating Flora Island Plant Protector prevents hungry koi and other fish from harming plants. It protects the entire pond plant -- submerged portion and emergent leaves. Made in the United States by Nycon Products, this handy device is 2 feet in diameter. It is Nycon's model RFI 2. ESSENTIAL FOR KOI PONDS WITH LILIES OR LOTUS: The fish barrier / plant protector's netting keeps water lilies, lotus, water hyacinth and other aquatic plants safe from koi damage. Slip it over a pond planter for full protection of tender emergent stalks and roots. The plant protector's screen will span from the submerged planter to the pond surface. (Pond planter not included.) DECREASES ALGAE GROWTH: By confining plant leaves inside its floating ring, the fish barrier / plant protector keeps withered leaves from floating away from the plant and attracting algae formation. The result is a cleaner pond and less pond maintenance for you. SAFEGUARD YOUR AQUATIC PLANTS with this Fish Barrier / Floating Flora Island Plant Protector. CLICK "ADD TO CART" NOW!
- ✅ KEEPS PLANTS SAFE FROM FISH: This Fish Barrier / Floating Flora Island Plant Protector safeguards all parts of your pond plants. Its mesh net prevents the plants' submerged stems and roots from becoming food for koi and other fish. Because its top ring floats, the protector also prevents the plants' emergent leaves from being nibbled by fish at the water surface. Slip the netting over a pond planter for full protection of tender emergent stalks and roots.
- ✅ IDEAL SIZE AND COLOR: Measuring 24 inches in diameter at its top, this round, floating protector has room for one or more plants. It can protect water hyacinth, water lilies, lotus and other plant varieties. The plant protector's black color reduces its visibility on water. It allows the focus to remain on your beautiful plants.
- ✅ CAN CONFINE PLANTS TO A CERTAIN AREA: In addition to holding aquatic plants, this protector can be used to keep the plants in a specific part of the pond. Simply anchor or tie the protector to the pond bottom or bank. (Anchor and tie are not provided.)
- ✅ REDUCES POND CLEAN-UP: Because its net basket holds an entire plant, this fish barrier / plant protector keeps the plant's old, lost leaves from floating throughout the water garden. That feature reduces algae in the water and makes collecting the spent leaves simpler and quicker.
- ✅ MADE IN THE USA: This product is manufactured in the United States of America by Nycon Products. It is Nycon's model RFI-2.

User questions & answers

Answer: | Yes - my plants without snails |
Question: | Are these okay for high sun pond areas |
Answer: | There okay but it randomly dying ? But thanks for the plants |
Question: | do I need to worry about them crowding out the light from other plants in the aquarium |
Answer: | Yes, they can grow to cover the whole top surface area of a tank. To counter this, create a ring out of air tubing and set on top of the water where you need light to come through. Place the spangles on the outside of the ring to keep it clear for light. |
Question: | Would gold fish eat them |
Answer: | Gold fish usually eat duckweed - (LEMNA MINOR) |
