14 best test dog dnas
DNA tests for dogs, also known as dog DNA testing or canine DNA testing, are a type of genetic testing that provides valuable information about a dog's ancestry, breed composition, and potential health issues. These tests are related to the categories of DNA tests, health supplies, dogs, and pet supplies. Here's what you should know about dog DNA tests:
Purpose: Dog DNA tests are primarily used to uncover a dog's genetic heritage and breed composition. They can also reveal genetic markers associated with specific health conditions.
Ancestry and Breed Identification: One of the main purposes of dog DNA tests is to identify a dog's ancestry and breed composition. These tests can help pet owners better understand their dog's genetic makeup and heritage.
Health Screening: Some dog DNA tests offer health screening options that can identify genetic markers for various hereditary diseases and conditions. This information can be valuable for proactive health management and prevention.
Sample Collection: Dog DNA tests typically require a cheek swab or a blood sample from the dog. Cheek swabs are the most common and least invasive method of sample collection.
Laboratory Analysis: After collecting the sample, it is sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis. The lab examines the dog's DNA to provide information about its breed, ancestry, and potential health issues.
Breed Identification: Dog DNA tests can identify specific dog breeds present in a mixed-breed dog's genetic makeup. They can often detect even small percentages of breed contributions.
Family Tree: Some DNA tests offer a family tree feature that shows the dog's genetic connections to other dogs in the database. This can help reveal distant relatives and provide a deeper understanding of the dog's heritage.
Health Insights: In addition to breed information, certain DNA tests can provide insights into a dog's genetic predisposition to certain diseases and conditions. This information can be used to tailor the dog's healthcare and monitor for potential health issues.
Behavior Insights: Some dog DNA tests claim to provide insights into a dog's behavior and temperament based on its genetic profile, although these claims may vary in accuracy and reliability.
Breed-Specific Traits: Dog DNA tests may also reveal specific traits associated with particular breeds, such as coat color, coat type, and size. This can help pet owners better understand and care for their dog.
Accuracy: The accuracy of dog DNA tests can vary depending on the company and the quality of the database they use for comparison. It's essential to choose a reputable testing service for reliable results.
Usefulness for Breed-Specific Care: Dog DNA tests can be particularly useful for understanding breed-specific care needs, such as exercise requirements, dietary considerations, and potential health risks associated with specific breeds.
Overall, dog DNA tests are valuable tools for dog owners who want to gain insights into their pet's genetic heritage, breed composition, and potential health risks. They can help pet owners make informed decisions about their dog's care and well-being.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it identify black mouth cur even though not recognized by AKC |
Answer: | They have a long list. You can try the website to see if they tell you the breeds they can detect. |
Question: | During the covid-19 pandemic how long will it take to get my results back |
Answer: | Wisdom Panel is experiencing no delays in sample processing due to Covid-19. Once the sample is checked in at the lab you can expect results in roughly 2-3 weeks. |
Question: | How many test strips come in the package |
Answer: | There are two and they are not really test strips. They are like a little brush type swab and both have to be used on the same dog. Using both strips helps to get enough cells to get a DNA. Not crazy over Wisdom Panel. This is the first time we tried Wisdom Panel. We usually use Embark. |
Question: | What are the differences for all wisdom productes |
Answer: | 3.0 can detect purebred ancestors present in the first 3 generations and will give your dog’s MDR1 status (Multi-Drug Sensitivity); the Wisdom Panel Health test will do both of those things as well as providing results for 150+ disease causing mutations and a genetic trait analysis. The Wisdom Panel Essential will provide breed ancestry down to 1%, tests for 29 potential medical complications (including the MDR1 test), and up to 39 genetic traits; the Wisdom Panel Premium offers all of the above plus an additional 180+ mutation tests. |
- BREED IDENTIFICATION: Embark screens for over 350 dog breeds, types, and varieties. Using a research-grade genotyping platform developed in partnership with Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Embark offers the most accurate breed breakdown on the market.
- HEALTH SCREENING: Embark tests for 190+ genetic diseases including MDR1 drug sensitivity, glaucoma, degenerative myelopathy, and dilated cardiomyopathy, some of the most common adult-onset diseases in dogs. Keep your dog healthier & happier, longer.
- HIGHEST RATED: Embark's Breed + Health DNA test is the highest rated dog DNA test on Amazon.com.
- DISCOVER YOUR DOG’S RELATIVES: Find and connect with other dogs that share DNA with yours, including distant and close relatives. Only Embark will give you a percentage of shared DNA between your dog and others that have been tested with Embark.
- FAST, TRUSTED RESULTS: Built by experts, only Embark is partnered with Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and is trusted by veterinary hospitals. Results generally between 2-4 weeks.
User questions & answers
Question: | How many breeds are included in your database? Thank you |
Answer: | Hello Karen, we test for over 150 breeds - and even wolf, coyote, and village dog ancestry - together these breeds cover over 98% of dogs in America. This is the only test that can test for village dogs, and we can distinguish where village dogs come from! For more information see the full list of breeds that we test for here: https://embarkvet.com/breedlist. You can learn more about our breed and ancestry test on the Breed & Ancestry page: https://embarkvet.com/ancestry. Hope this helps! |
Question: | How long does it take to get the results back |
Answer: | I purchased the kit on Black Friday 2019 sale. It took 16 days from mailing to receive all test results. I was expecting longer than the estimated 3-4 weeks due to the presumably increased sales during the holidays. Here is my timeline: Mailed the sample on 12/5. Delivered to Embark 12/10. Sample sent to lab on 12/17. Received health results on 12/20. Received breed, traits, and relatives on 12/21. |
Question: | Has anyone compared results to wisdom panel? i am having a tough time trusting our wp results since they seem way off |
Answer: | Yes I have! We have 2 rescue dogs, and We 100% definitively know the ancestry of one of our rescues but not the other. Our older rescue, Lily, is a Doberman-Lab (maternal doberman, paternal lab-retriever). Our other rescue is a mixed bag of cuteness--all we know for sure if she has some husky and some border collie. That being said, I wanted to compare Wisdom Panel and Embark, and since we knew what one of our furbabies is a doberman-lab, we thought she would be a great control for this experiment! I ordered Wisdom panel first (bc of its great reviews and more appealing price) and I was completely appalled and disappointed at the results for our doberman-lab. Her results came back as Alaskan Malamute + Poodle. I actually called to see if they mixed up her results with someone else's but customer service told me that it was impossible to do so lol! I loved Embark's results, and they actually tested her pretty accurately--It came back as Doberman-Lab Retreiver-Rottie (Rottie being minimal). I love the health results, they are so much more detailed compared to Wisdom Panel results and its worth the extra cost. As for our other mixed rescue dog, Wisdom Panel came back with a mix of 8 breeds and 20% 'undefined'. I was pretty disappointed with that and our results for her Embark test are pending.I did post to the Embark facebook group, as other ppl have, and many people have done a similar experiment between the 2 companies. It seems to be overwhelmingly pro-Embark, but I can understand that the price may be a turnoff. In my opinion, the price is worth it for embark, especially if you have health concerns. |
Question: | I was interested in getting this for my dog, how is the embark test different from other dog dna tests |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it test for SOD1 in degenerative myelopathy |
Answer: | I went over my dog’s report and reviewed the many genetic factors that are tested. DM is listed as being tested for but there is no mention of SOD1 in the description. If it is found present there would almost surely be a more detailed explanation of the results. |
Question: | can I use dog hair for testing |
Answer: | I don't think dog hair can be used as they gather the saliva from inside the check, which my dog thought was a fun game |
Question: | Does one kit test just one dog |
Answer: | Yes, one kit one dog. |
Question: | Is this good for mixed breeds |
Answer: | Yes! The reason I bought it is because no-one could figure out what our little mutt was made of. We had so many different opinions. Most common opinion was cocker/yorkie mix. Test showed she is 50% small poodle, 16% Shih Tsu and 13% Lhasa apso. Also indicated that she had no genetic issues re: health. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it tell exactly what breed my mixed breed dog is composed of |
Answer: | This test will tell you the breed or breeds in your dog plus the Genetic Age of your dog. If you don't want the Genetic Age you can order a regular DNA MY Dog breed test. This does the same thing as that test with the addition of genetic age. Thank you. |
Question: | What does genetic age mean? Is it the same as physical age or something different |
Answer: | The genetic age is the physical age vs the chronological age. So you may be 40 years old chronologically and if you are relatively healthy your genetic age would be about 40. Many dogs will report very close to their chronological age. If they have disease or a lot of physical stress they may report older. |
Question: | You have to upload a picture? that seems sketchy that you’ll guess my dogs breeds based on looks and not dna. can i do this without uploading a photo |
Answer: | You may be mixing us up with another company. We do not, nor have we ever, required a photo. You can send one or not, it is up to you. And if you want one you can also send it AFTER you get results and we will add it and re-send the results with the photo. We do not require one. |
Question: | Does this give percentages of each breed? Or just list top three |
Answer: | Hi there, The test will report all of the breeds, whether it be 1 or 10, that are in the dog's DNA. Thanks. |
- DNA TEST FOR DOGS: This Dog DNA test will reveal the breeds that make up your dog. Receive the breed percentages that make up your dog's breed.

User questions & answers
Question: | There are two swabs that come with the kit, so can we test two dogs at the same time or do two separate kits need to be purchased |
Answer: | You will need a separate kit for each dog. The two swabs are to insure that a good sample is taken. We tested our two dogs using separate kits and were very happy with the results! |
Question: | Does this test cover wolf |
Answer: | The test does not cover wolf detection. Get a different test. |
Question: | My dog just died, would it work to rehydrate his saliva in his water bowl and swab from there |
Answer: | Sorry for your loss. I don't think this answer will help you now since it has been about 11 weeks since your original question and I'm not sure if the saliva DNA is still good after that long, But hopefully this may help someone else who has the same question about their deceased dog. On the DNAmydog.com website they now have a DNA test for deceased dogs for $157. They need anything that the dog chewed on or had oral contact with. chew toys, (unwashed) blankets they chewed on, toothbrush, etc.. Here's the link : http://dnamydog.com/dna-deceased-dogs.php You may want to call them (416-691-4160) just to be sure you can't still send them something and get some results. |
Question: | How quickly do you get the results |
Answer: | I submitted the sample on 4.29 and received the results 5.19. My puppy was a rescue, and on our first visit to the vet she guessed he was 8 weeks old and an Akita /Australian Shepherd mix. The Mars test confirmed that he was a first generation cross of those two breeds, so kudos to my vet! (Boo to the sociopath that left my perfect and gorgeous puppy in a dumpster.) |
