Winter Dormancy - Beauty Sleep

Plants that grow in temperate zones are adapted to the four seasons. The time of year dictates their growth and maturation – their living conditions, in other words. In autumn, the plants start to make the slow transition into winter dormancy. The sun moves lower and lower on the horizon and the temperature falls outside. Above all, it is light and temperature which are responsible for regulating when the year’s long beauty sleep begins and ends.

Ph Level - The Mood Of The Soil

Different soils have different dispositions, just like us growers. Soil can be acid, alkaline or neutral, depending on the different compositions of acid or alkaline substances, and its pH level provides us with information about what the balance between the different substances is like. Most plants prefer a soil with a neutral or slightly acidic pH level. There are, of course, always exceptions to the rule.

Bokashi - Japanese Compost

Another way of breaking down waste into nutrient-rich compost is to ferment it. You can do this by adding lactic acid bacteria – similar to that found in yoghurt – and particularly efficient microbes known as EM (effective micro-organisms).

Bokashi is an anaerobic (doesn’t require oxygen) composting method which was developed in Japan in the early 1980s, and which has recently started to gain popularity elsewhere in the world. The process is similar to ordinary kitchen composting but it is quicker and has less of a smell if carried out correctly.

Sadly, you need to get hold of a certain ‘shop-bought product’ to kick off the process. You can buy bokashi from garden centres – just look online or ask in your local shop. The product is a mix consisting of, among other things, lactic acid bacteria, molasses and wheat bran. You sprinkle the mix directly into your compost bucket (with a lid) in your kitchen. It’s important that the environment is oxygen-poor for the process to work. It can’t be too wet, either. And the dregs stink! You can, however, heavily dilute this with water (roughly 1/100) and use it as a fantastic liquid fertiliser.

One of the advantages of bokashi is that none of the nutrients disappear in the process, and virtually no greenhouse gases are produced. You can ferment all organic waste, including fish guts, shellfish casings and bones. Another advantage is that the pH level is so low that pests don’t like the environment. In three to four weeks, you will have transformed your waste into a beautiful, nutrient-rich soil improver. The microbes in the bokashi mean that the proteins in the food waste are broken down into amino acids – which plants can assimilate almost immediately.

The end product isn’t quite humus. For that, you will first have to mix the material into your soil. Once you do this, the bokashi microbes will continue to work, now alongside their new microbe pals in the soil.

Nettle Soup - Homemade Liquid Fertiliser

Nettle feed:

Fill a bucket (ideally with a lid) with nettles and add water. Leave outside for a few days or a week – until it starts to stink. To reduce the odour, you can add a little rock dust to the mix. Dilute with about ten parts water.

Use the mix to water the soil or pour it into a spray can and spritz your plants’ leaves. The latter will provide nutrients and help fight the loss of foliage, but it can also leave marks on the leaves.

Alternatively: Tie the nettles together in a bouquet and drop into a bucket of water. Once the water has drawn the nutrients from the nettles, you can simply lift the bouquet from the bucket by the string and use it again. The nutrients released will be slightly lower than in the mix above, and can be used with fewer parts water. You can throw the rest into the compost heap. This process works just as well with comfrey.

Horsetail boost:

Extract the nutrients from horsetail by simmering it in water over a low heat for an hour. Then strain it and squeeze out the liquid. Throw the remainder onto the compost heap. Dilute using 5–10 parts water. Mix with some other liquid feed (i.E. Nettle or comfrey mix) or spray directly onto the plants. Horsetail can help tocounteract fungal infestations.

Comfrey elixir:

Cut the big, rough leaves into smaller pieces. Fill a bucket (ideally with lid) with the leaves and add water. Leave it to sit until it starts to stink. Dilute with roughly ten parts water and then use directly on the soil.

Chicken manure soup:

Mix a few handfuls of chicken manure with water in a bucket, stir and then leave to draw for twenty-four hours. Strain the nitrogen-rich nutrient stock into a watering can and use to add a top-up to any plants which look like they could do with a boost – those which are displaying weak growth or are pale and feeble. You can dilute the mix further if you need to – as a rule, the liquid should be the same colour as very weak tea. You can re-use the manure, which will give slightly weaker results, by re-filling the bucket with water.

Manure and/or compost soup:

Mix a few decilitres of farmyard manure or kitchen compost with water in a bucket or bowl and leave it to stand and draw for a couple of days. You can put the manure into a mesh bag – the kind you might use in the washing machine – if you want the mix to be less mucky and avoid catching in the watering can’s filter. An old pair of tights can work well, too. Throw the rest onto the compost heap.

Answer:	Yes, of course it smells bad inside. But the fumes are not exactly trapped. There is some air exchange, but they are contained far better than an open litter box.
