14 best flea medicine for cats

Flea medicine for cats often comes in the form of flea drops, also known as spot-on treatments. These are topical solutions applied to the cat's skin, usually between the shoulder blades, to control and prevent flea and tick infestations. Here's what you need to know about flea drops for cats:

  1. Active Ingredients: Flea drops contain active ingredients that are effective in killing and repelling fleas, ticks, and sometimes other parasites. Common active ingredients include imidacloprid, fipronil, selamectin, and permethrin. It's important to choose a product with ingredients safe for cats, as some ingredients can be toxic to them.

  2. Application: Applying flea drops is straightforward. The liquid is applied to the back of the cat's neck, where it's difficult for the cat to lick or rub off. Part the fur and apply the medication directly to the skin. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer for proper application.

  3. Duration of Effectiveness: The duration of effectiveness varies depending on the specific product. Some flea drops provide protection for a month, while others can last up to three months. It's crucial to follow the recommended reapplication schedule to maintain continuous protection.

  4. Killing Fleas and Ticks: Flea drops are designed to quickly kill existing fleas and ticks on the cat, preventing new infestations. They can disrupt the flea life cycle by targeting eggs, larvae, and pupae.

  5. Avoidance of Water: Most flea drops are waterproof after a certain period. However, it's advisable to avoid bathing or swimming your cat for a day or two after application to ensure the medication is fully absorbed and effective.

  6. Safety for Cats: Always use flea drops specifically formulated for cats. Never use products designed for dogs on cats, as they can contain ingredients toxic to felines. Follow dosing guidelines carefully based on your cat's weight and age.

  7. Combination Products: Some flea drops may contain a combination of ingredients to target various parasites such as fleas, ticks, and worms. These combination products can provide comprehensive parasite control for your cat.

  8. Consult a Veterinarian: If you're unsure about which flea drop product to use for your cat or if your cat has underlying health conditions, consult your veterinarian before using any flea medication.

  9. Storage and Disposal: Store flea drops in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight. Ensure safe disposal of used containers or packaging according to local regulations.

Flea drops are a popular and effective method of flea control for cats and can provide your feline companion with relief from flea and tick infestations. Always use these products responsibly and according to the manufacturer's instructions.

User questions & answers

Question: Has product been updated to 2019? Also....dumb question, but how do you use it
Answer: Yes it has . I put it directly on my cats back of the neck on the skin . It works great I have no fleas on all 3 of my cats . I highly recommend this product.
Question: What is the difference between Advantage II and Advantage 9 Topical Solution
Answer: The Advantage II which I use is only for fleas not ticks. It comes in a tube and you apply it between the shoulder blades. As for Advantage 9, I have never heard of it. But I can tell you that neither my dog or my cat has had fleas with this product.
Question: LICE
Answer: It worked on lice for the cats I put it on. One of them had a bad infestation. She’ll need more applied again. The life cycle is 3-4 weeks of a louse.
Question: How do you get the packaging open from Walmart? It is in a hard plastic case. Cannot open
Answer: Did you steal this? The hard case is for anti theft. The product is taken out of the case at checkout. Take your receipt back to Walmart and have them take it out of the case!

FRONTLINE Plus Flea and Tick Treatment for Cats

Made with two tough ingredients, FRONTLINE Plus helps you rid your pet of fleas and ticks, and prevent further infestations.

The first, fipronil, attacks adult fleas and ticks. The second, (S)-methoprene, attacks flea eggs and larvae. They work together to exterminate all month long.

FRONTLINE Plus also breaks the flea life cycle by destroying the next generation of flea eggs and larvae—giving you the power to help prevent a flea infestation on your pet.

Because it stores in the sebaceous glands in the skin, it constantly replenishes the protection for 30 days, working even if your pet gets wet.

Break the Flea Life Cycle

Flea infestations start with just two fleas laying hundreds of flea eggs within a matter of days. FRONTLINE Plus prevents an infestation by not only exterminating adult fleas—which comprise only 5% of the total flea population—but also by destroying flea eggs and larvae too.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this 6 month supply a 6 pack of tubes
Answer: Hi Doreen... Actually, I bought the 4 pack because I have four cats. I had earlier in the month bought a 4 pack someplace else, so I had two treatments for each cat. I did the treatments three weeks apart (the instructions say it is OK to do if you wait seven days). I bought the 9+ lb. package as three of the cats are well over that weight. One cat is a bit smaller and I didn't use quite all of the tube on her. None of the cats had any bad reactions, and it worked well for three of them. The other cat (partial Maine Coon) had some results, but not so good.
Question: Does this kill ticks? If not, what do people recommend for ticks
Answer: To get rid of fleas and ticks use Frontline Plus. I started to use it on mine a year ago it killed the ticks and fleas. I reapply it every other month and I haven’t seen one since.
Question: When using this medicine, do I also need to flea bomb or spray the apartment ? Or will the medicine kill all fleas in the apartment, as well
Answer: VACUUM EVERY DAY. Or at least every other day. You will NEVER get rid of all the fleas if you don't treat the environment as well as the animal(s). In addition to the Advantage II, I used Knockout spray and also shampooed my cat. She has now had two doses of the Advantage and I have been spraying and vacuuming every other day and I finally feel like I have the upper hand! Even when you think they are gone, keep treating your cat and house. All it takes is one flea to start an infestation.
Question: Why is the item called "Bayer K9 Advantix II Flea and Tick Control Treatment for Cats"? The Bayer K9 is, of course, for dogs
Answer: Please be sure to use ONLY Feline Advantage on cats and use ONLY the dog Advantage on dogs! The use of canine Advantage on cats WILL kill them giving them severe neurological damage! I wish that Advantage would make the packaging TOTALLY different for cats and dogs, it would help. Especially with people who may not see the difference at first glance. My elderly mom accidentally applied the large dog Advantage to her cat and it had to be put down. Mom has felt horrible about it. Awful experience. Also about dosing, I have a 19 year old cat and I have used feline Advantage on him every summer for about 3 months for well over 17 years. It works wonderfully for him. I have always used the large cat product but since he has lost some weight this year I called Bayer and asked if I should use a smaller dose. The person at Bayer explained that Advantage works on body AREA as well as weight. So even though my cat has lost some weight (he's 9 pounds) his body AREA is still the same (loose skin) and so I have been applying the large cat dose and it has worked well for him this summer with no ill effects. I cannot speak to the authenticity of this Amazon product as I purchase my Advantage from the local pet store.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have a smell - chopped it up put in wet food cat would not touch it
Answer: No it does not smell. Do not chop it up . Take a little bit of the cat food and roll the pill in it. Then place the pill covered in cat food on top of the rest of the cat food. Make sure your cat is hungry, like the first thing in the morning.
Question: Can this be given in addition to a topical flea solution
Answer: A vet tech told me it is ok , but I play it safe and apply the topical (Advantage) 24 hours after the Capstar.
Question: Is this the medicine that makes the cat act nervous like something is biting it after about 20 minutes giving the pill
Answer: Capstar affect the nervous system of the fleas and they get spastic. The fleas get into a frenzy and squirm around on the cat. All that movement on the cats skin drive them a little crazy for 30-60 minutes.
Question: What is the difference between this and blue label Capstar
Answer: I would call the company, and see if they say, "We can get double our money for anyone with a small dog AND a cat." Many do not like cats as well as dogs and if the designers of this drug are members of those who like one species of pets, they may not care if your cat gets poisoned. and there are many foods that cats or dogs find poisonous, and for many who have indoor cats, the pills may expire before needing to use more.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product also kill ear mites and mosquitoes as Revolution does? Thank you
Answer: This doesn't even kill fleas.
Question: I accidentally bought the the 5-9 lb. size for my cat that weighs 13 pounds. Should I use 2 tubes instead of one
Answer: No, just use one. You may have to re-apply after 2-3 weeks but that is perfectly safe according to my vet.
Question: Expiration dates
Answer: No exp date since there is no heartworm prevention in this there is no need for an exp date and as long as you follow the recommendations for temperatures to store it in it should be good and effective indefinitely
Question: hi, is anyone that uses this actually seeing the dead fleas on their floors? like advantage 2? thanks need 2 no
Answer: Its kept my dog flea free. Best yet, she's deathly allergic to Fipronil flea meds suddenly as a senior. Advantage and this generic have produced zero side effects in her, although I was terrified to use anything after a terrible reaction to her usual flea products last summer. With a new puppy, a 1 year old, and 2 cats, skipping flea prevention wasn't an option. So far, this has been wonderful. By the way, if your pets show any signs of an immediate reaction to any flea products, immediately bathe them in blue Dawn dishwashing liquid. I'd changed vets and the new vet failed to tell me all the regular shampoos weren't helping because flea meds are oil based. Only Dawn will get it off, hopefully before it's been absorbed in the bloodstream. Dawn and 2 weeks of subQ fluids even 4 days later saved my dog's life.

User questions & answers

Question: Where was this product manufactured
Answer: So does it or does it not connect with the zipper? I just bought this and there is no “pin end” on either the tent or tunnel. Only the door flaps have them. If they don’t connect that is very misleading and disappointing because the video shows the person zipping it.
Question: How often can I reapply
Answer: Hi Kristen, when the tunnel is expanded to it's full length and height the dimensions are 62" X 17." It then collapses down back down and is secured by attached fasteners. Marc R
Question: But it says 5-9 lbs in the online description
Answer: It's not impossible for little bugs to squeeze through the tiny holes in the mesh (I once noticed an ant crawl in while my cat was basking in the sunlight), but it's definitely better than nothing. I believe winged critters like fleas & mosquitoes would have to try really hard to fight their way through to her. I've seen larger insects land on the outside walls, but I have yet to see any make their way into the tent.
Question: Where is the information about active ingredients? Lots of "same as" references, but no actual listing of the ingredients in the description or pics
Answer: I bring mine in the garage every night but it’s made of a nylon material so i don’t think rain would hurt it. Obviously you can’t leave your car in it when it’s raining and I’d also worry about it blowing away. My cat loves being able to sit out on the patio with us!

User questions & answers

Question: If i buy the frontline with six vials, is it the new package or old? if it is the old, you stated it was 3 years old. won't that be expired
Answer: TAKE CAT TO VET!!! that sounds like an allergic reaction and your cat needs help. I use this product on my cats regularly BUT I always rinse it off. I do not let it dry in their fur and I do not allow them to ingest it.
Question: bought front line plus last year and it did have a expiration date. i just got same product again and it has no exp date. vet says it should
Answer: Do not use anything with essential oils on cats. They don’t have the enzyme needed to breakdown the oils so they can damage their kidneys and kill them. I almost killed my cat using this peppermint foam waterless mousse. My vet said it’s very toxic for cats. Use regular coconut oil and rub it in to their skin. They will look funny for a few days but it really does work. Just comb them 3 or 4 times a day for a few days and the fleas and flea debris will be gone and no harmful or toxic ingredients to make them sick or very possibly kill them.
Question: What is the difference between frontline plus and frontline tritak? is one more effective than the other for ticks? thanks
Answer: yes, there are zippers at both ends....you can attached the tunnel to either the tent opening/closing or other tunnels to construct a "t" so that one opening/closure is used just to let the cat in & out at the other end.
Question: What is the expiration date? We alternate Frontline Plus and Revolution so need fresh (12 months) expiration
Answer: No. The zipper on one end of the tunnel is not compatible. The manufacturer could easily fix this problem. Simply make both ends of the tunnel with a Male zipper.

User questions & answers

Question: Still have fleas. Do I reapply before the month is up
Answer: I started using this like 2 yrs ago. It works very well. I have my cat take an oral pill one month and bath him in this amazing how it keeps him free of fleas. I want to say since the directions DO NOT specify do not use on kitties You probably could. It is safe and our cat has never had an issue. Leave on for 4 to 5 minutes working it in his fur then rinse very well. Use less the amount you would on a bigger cat. But I truly think its safe to use on your kitty. Just use less. you can use it every 2 weeks we do it every other month or so. I hope this is a help. I did some research and NO info out there states YOU cannot use on a kitty. Best regards
Question: All natural flea, tick protection for cats
Answer: No, I use it for the fleas
Question: Is it as good frontline gold
Answer: I have done so for my cats. Vets Best is plant based, i.e., peppermint oil and clove oil topical to repel fleas and ticks whereas Revolution is systemic medication absorbed through the skin. I would wait a week or so between the topical and the Revolution.
Question: How long will my cat scratch
Answer: Not sure about advantage 2 but I asked the vet about frontline and the answer was yes because it's natural you just want to wait 48 hours after putting on the frontline so you don't wash the meds off or use this first and then apply flea meds

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: *Cheristin is for use in cats and kittens 8 weeks of age or older and weighing 1.8 lbs or more. Use as directed by label.

HOW TO APPLY CHERISTIN: 1. Hold the applicator tube upright and press cap down until it clicks, indicating the tube has been punctured. 2. Remove the cap and make sure there is an opening at the tip of the tube. 3. Part the hair on your cat’s neck at the base of the head until skin is visible. 4. Place the tip of the tube directly above the skin and squeeze 2-4 times to dispense the contents directly on the skin.

OTHER APPLICATION TIPS: Apply a single dose to each individual cat. Do not split a single tube between multiple cats. For best results, apply at the base of the head, not between shoulder blades. Avoid getting Cheristin in your pet’s eyes or mouth. Do not allow your cat to ingest Cheristin.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the medicine come in individual tubes with its own cap (like advantage ii)? or do you cut it open (like advecta plus & actispot ii) - no lid
Answer: The product contains the following Active Ingredients: Pyrethrins 0.075%, Piperonyl Butoxide 0.750%, Pyriproxfen 0.086%, Other Ingredients: 99.089% The product contains an insectr growth regulator which prevents flea eggss from hatching for 30 days.
Question: what is the best rated flea and tic med. for cats
Answer: Often. If you have an infestation you can use it a few times a week. Waiting weeks between uses will do nothing for your pets as there is very limited residual effect. It’s a contact killer, so really only effective once applied. Unless the environment is also treated, fleas will be back on the animal in no time.
Question: will this work on a 20 pound cat
Answer: This was not effective at all. The fleas just heard their breath while my cats were being washed, I think. It was useless as a flea killing shampoo. I then use Dawn - original blue formula and it worked great. Don't waste your money on this product. Get Dawn - it is safe for puppies also.
Question: Is this good for ticks to
Answer: I did not end up using the one I bought. I bought the best flea collar on the market and avoided having to give mine a bath. Fleas were falling off him within an hour. And gone within 24.

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this work compared to advantage
Answer: Their size said "large". I guess I should have went with XL...
Question: Does it have a new pack? i bought one at walmart before and i bought the same thing at amazon a week ago and found that the pack is different
Answer: Thank you for your interest in our Natural Chemistry Flea products. This shampoo is specifically designed for cats and kittens, so it has not been properly tested on ferrets. Because it has not been tested, we cannot recommend using it on any animals other than cats and kittens. You can consult with your veterinarian and provide the ingredient listing for them to review. If you have any further questions, our customer service team is standing by to help! https://naturalchemistrypet.com/pages/contact-us
Question: I purchased this last month and just purchased it again but I can't find a expiration code where is it please
Answer: I did and it worked great! But that is at your own discretion
Question: Bold print on yop of box says for cats 5 to 9 pounds, but smaller print on bottom says only for cats 9 pounds or more. Which is it
Answer: It is kind of runny. It also has a peculiar smell. It stays on the kittens and on your hands. I don't mind it, but it's a "smell". Also: make sure you leave it on for a few minutes in order to kill fleas. If you don't, they will just stun but not die.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it irritate cats skin
Answer: I recently bought the Jumbo size. Using a tape measure, the interior dimensions I got at the very BASE (floor) of the pan are approx. 16"L × 15.5"W. There are semi-rounded corners at the base, which I did not include in my measurements. The pan flares out a bit from bottom to top, so the interior dimensions I got for the upper portion of the litter pan (not including the hooded cover) are approx. 21"L × 18"W. The height of the pan (not including the hooded cover) is approx. 6.5" at the front end & 11" at the back end. I apologize if my measurements aren't precisely accurate, but it's a bit difficult to take exact measurements due to curved corners, tapered side walls, etc. Hope this helps a little, though. I do love this litter box and so do my "twin" 1-yr-old tabby boys, who already weigh 16 lbs each...Yikes! Now that I have a great litter box they both like, the bigger challenge is finding a low-cal. food they'll actually eat...no luck so far. Best wishes to all my fellow furry kids & their loving families!
