To answer your question the MEDIUM IS FOR A 20 TO 30 INCH GIRTH, LARGE IS FOR 30 TO 40 INCH GIRTH. If you are ever unsure if u go to the Hamilton website for dog harnesses, they have it right there with the sizes and if I remember right they teach how to measure correctly to get the correct one. I also like the one you are looking at and plan to go back for it another day. Nice to have a back up if you need to wash one. Hope I answered your question
