3 best wooden cat scratching post

A wooden cat scratching post is a type of furniture designed specifically for cats to fulfill their natural instinct to scratch. It typically consists of a wooden frame or post that is covered in a rough material, such as sisal rope or carpet, which provides a suitable surface for cats to scratch on. Here are some key points about wooden cat scratching posts:

  1. Scratching Instinct: Cats have a natural instinct to scratch surfaces. It helps them maintain their claws, mark their territory, and stretch their muscles. Providing a scratching post can help redirect this behavior away from your furniture.

  2. Materials: Wooden cat scratching posts are often preferred because they are sturdy and durable. The wooden frame provides stability, ensuring that the post won't tip over while the cat is scratching.

  3. Sisal Rope or Carpet: The surface of the wooden post is covered with materials like sisal rope or carpet. Sisal is a popular choice because it's rough and satisfying for cats to scratch. Carpet-covered posts are also common and provide a different texture for scratching.

  4. Height and Design: Scratching posts come in various heights and designs. Some are simple vertical posts, while others may include platforms, hiding spots, or attached toys to provide extra enrichment for your cat.

  5. Placement: It's important to place the scratching post in a location where your cat likes to scratch or spend time. This could be near their favorite resting spots or by a window where they can watch outside.

  6. Training Tool: A wooden cat scratching post can be used as a training tool. You can encourage your cat to use it by gently guiding their paws onto the post and rewarding them when they scratch it.

  7. Maintenance: Over time, the scratching surface may wear out due to your cat's claws. Many scratching posts allow you to replace the covering, extending the life of the post.

  8. Multiple Posts: If you have multiple cats, it's a good idea to have more than one scratching post to prevent territorial disputes and give each cat their own space.

In summary, a wooden cat scratching post is a valuable piece of furniture for cat owners. It serves as a way to satisfy your cat's natural scratching instinct, protect your other furniture, and provide entertainment and exercise for your feline friend.

Product description

Natural Scratch cedar posts are 32" tall and 4" x 4" wide. They are made from Northern Wisconsin, rough-sawn, solid white cedar and offer coarse but soft textures cats like to dig their claws into.

The rough-side-up, white cedar, X-style base is equivalent to a solid 32" x 32" square—large enough to provide a stable foundation for aggressive clawing by all cats, even large Maine Coons. (Wobbly posts are a feline turn-off!) Soft, but rough surfaces invite clawing vertically and horizontally.

User questions & answers

Question: How is the quality of it
Answer: The quality is excellent! This is the only scratching post we were able to train our cat to use. It is very sturdy and our cat stretches all the way up to the to scratch. We trained her to use it by following the suggestions that come with the scratching post.
Question: Can this be made 40 Ins tall
Answer: Yes, it's about 40 inches tall. I purchased one about 2-3 months ago because my adult cats started scratching on the furniture of a furnished house we rent. It comes with suggestions for getting your cat to use it but I haven't had time to try those out. Interestingly, however, we also foster kittens from about 5 weeks to 10 weeks old, and as soon as the kittens reach about 6 weeks they start using it naturally, even climbing up it! I think it's a good product but remember it is not a cat tree for climbing, it is a scratching post.
Question: My cat is terrified of nail trim. Was hoping this would help wear them down so less visits to vet for trimming
Answer: We purchased this scratching post because our semi feral cat cannot be touched let alone taken to the vet for a nail trim. It has achieved the objective of giving her a place to aggressively scratch ( VS the legs of my furniture). It has helped to keep her nails honed, but they are still long; however without this scratching post, they would be unbearable long. She hasn’t had a nail trim in 18 months- not ideal but this has alleviated the situation. So I would give it a try. I spray the post with catnip spray and she loves it.
Question: My kitty got splinters in his paws from scratching wood when he was younger. I am terrified that this product will do the same. Should I be worried
Answer: Thanks for your interest in Natural Scratch. After many years of selling these posts, I never been told that any cat or kitten received splinters from clawing one. White cedar is a soft wood. However, if you're worried, I recommend you try our cork posts. No chance of slivers with them.
