I use mine in my chihuahua's crate for at night. I start warming it up early evening and usually turn it off mid morning the next day. I would think it would be fine to leave it on most of the time if you are using it for a pet who lays on it most of the time, day and night.

Shed get really anxious and upset if her siblings were cuddling and she couldn't get under the covers though. This is the best and my outside kitties have spent many freezing nights in their warm box with the mat on which to sleep. Initially these were feral cats which allowed me to care for them from a safe distance. Loved the opportunity to domesticate them. And I also had a mat for my inside kitty as well who loved her bed just as much as the outside critters. I think this was the best purchase I've made for a pet.
