12 best treats for parakeets
Treats for parakeets are special food items designed to supplement the diet of these small pet birds and provide them with additional nutrients, variety, and mental stimulation. These treats fall under the categories of Treats, Birds, and Pet Supplies.
Key information about treats for parakeets:
Nutritional Variety: Parakeets, also known as budgerigars, have specific dietary needs. Treats are an excellent way to introduce variety into their diet. They should be viewed as occasional supplements rather than primary sources of nutrition.
Commercial Bird Treats: Many pet stores offer commercial treats specifically formulated for parakeets. These treats typically come in the form of small seeds, pellets, or biscuits that are easy for the birds to eat.
Seed Mixes: Seed-based treats are a popular choice for parakeets. They may contain a mix of different seeds, such as millet, sunflower seeds, and safflower seeds. While parakeets enjoy these treats, it's essential to offer them in moderation because some seeds can be high in fat.
Fruit and Vegetables: Fresh fruits and vegetables can be given as treats to parakeets. Offer small portions of items like apples, carrots, broccoli, and leafy greens. Make sure to wash them thoroughly and remove any uneaten portions promptly to prevent spoilage.
Herbs and Flowers: Some parakeets enjoy fresh herbs and edible flowers as treats. Safe options include basil, parsley, dandelion leaves, and nasturtium flowers.Always ensure that the plants are pesticide-free.
Commercial Millet Sprays: Millet sprays are a popular treat for parakeets. They are typically sold in pet stores and are easy to attach to the cage for the birds to nibble on.
Homemade Treats: You can make homemade treats for your parakeets by combining bird-safe ingredients like oats, whole grains, and seeds. There are various online recipes and resources available for creating DIY bird treats.
Limit Sugary Treats: Parakeets have a sweet tooth, but sugary treats should be avoided or given sparingly as excessive sugar can lead to health issues.
Supplemental Minerals and Cuttlebones: Parakeets also benefit from treats that provide essential minerals, such as cuttlebones and mineral blocks. These items help keep their beaks trimmed and provide necessary nutrients.
Exercise and Foraging: Consider offering treats in foraging toys or treat-dispensing devices to stimulate your parakeet's mental and physical activity.
Fresh Water: Always provide fresh, clean water for your parakeet to wash down treats and stay hydrated.
Remember that treats should make up only a small portion of your parakeet's overall diet. The majority of their nutrition should come from a high-quality commercial parakeet food formulated to meet their specific dietary requirements. Providing a balanced diet and appropriate treats will help ensure your parakeet remains healthy and happy.

User questions & answers
Question: | do these sticks hang in your cage if not do you just throw them in |
Answer: | Yes, you are correct they are 1/2" |
Question: | Has anyone come up with a way to catch the seed that falls off and to the bottom of the cage? My budgies love these things but there is so much wasted |
Answer: | I have a sun conure in this cage and she has not been able to damage or break the bars. I think it should be fine for a Quaker parrot as well since they are similar in size. |
Question: | can i give my canary egg-honey sticks for parakeets?? I made A mistake in ordering |
Answer: | The birds definitely appreciate the extra space, and it is so easy to clean. |
Question: | where are these made |
Answer: | It's amazing what you can find on the internet if you look. Here's a handy budgie cage size calculator. Plug in your dimensions (I did 43x43x72) and it will give you the number of birds. 35 in my case here. Amazing! I can't vouch for the accuracy or verifiability of the calculator. You'll have to take that up with them. Good luck. https://thepetsupplyguy.com/budgie-cage-size-calculator/ |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why the price jump from 6.62 to 9.98, in only 6weeks |
Answer: | I don’t think all the toys would be good for them. My caique LOVES the large ball. My cockatiel loves the bridge/perch. (Which is actually why I bought this). I wouldn’t recommend these for an Amazon. Try mor sturdy toys, like leather ones. |
Question: | Will love birds enjoy this treat |
Answer: | If you buy a bird from a big pet store you will get a sick bird. They are raised on large farms. A private home is your best bet. I bought my bird from a very small village pet store. The day the babies came into the store from a private home I went in and got him. He was so little he did not make a single sound for six months. I thought I had a deaf-mute parakeet. Now he says about twenty words. He calls me mama. |
Question: | Hi do they all have a hole punched spot on the bag |
Answer: | yes it's 99% singing canaries about 35 min |
Question: | Will the seeds sprout if exposed to water |
Answer: | Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Both of these metals are potentially toxic to birds |

User questions & answers
Question: | can rabbits eat these |
Answer: | I hang the treat at the top of the cage. My husband made a little box approx 5 inches my 5 inches out of wood and put it under where the stick hangs. he attached it to the side of the cage. Now the extra seeds fall into the box, we also will put some fresh vegies that won't fit into the clips easily in the box. Our small birds love the little box and forge for their treats. The box was really easy to make just small scrap wood. They sell simple wood boxes on here it you are not handy. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have strawberries in it |
Answer: | Sold by weight not by piece. Sorry, if we lost a number here then some people will expect that number of pieces. There are quite a few and it is usually long enough to last approx 3 weeks for a small bird. We do offer Subscribe and Save for this item, and it’s a great idea for automatically having orders sent to you every 3 weeks so you never run out. Thanks. Rick BirdDog Depot |
Question: | Can white doves eat this for vitamin A |
Answer: | Hello- what Millet did you used to buy? Our Millet prices have been extremely steady and have not increased more than 5% if at all. Prices only increase when freight and fees to us increase. Both have increased and we make every attempt to hold our prices steady. You can save that 5% by using the “Subscribe and Save” option when you make you purchase. |
Question: | Is this product similar to Purina's tropical treat? I've used that for the last year, but it's either become unavailable or tripled in price |
Answer: | It all depends what kind of Parrots you have as to what kind of millet they will prefer. As a example my Cockatiels and even my African Grey Parrot prefer the larger sprays, it is easier to get to, to eat all of it. Smaller birds, like Parakeets and Finches, can get to millet that has tighter sprays that are smaller around millet, they have smaller beaks. Also personal taste just like us humans. Some birds may not even know what millet spray is as opposed to having it in bird food. If that is the case, then just one bird/Parrot eating millet will get the others curious, then they might try it as well. All birds can see colors, millet comes in all colors, brown, golden, golden brown, etc. As I said it can come down to personal taste. I run a personal Bird Sanctuary, for over 30 years now, I just lost my 35 year old Cockatiel, named Sunbird. So yes I am very informed about Parrots. |
Question: | Can white doves eat this |
Answer: | I don’t know much about Parakeets but I feed seed, sticks, millet seed and dried fruit and veggies along with real kale or spinach greens twice a week to my Diamond Doves! I feel they need a well rounded diet! |
