9 best variable speed pumps
Variable speed pumps are crucial components in pool and hot tub systems, designed to circulate water efficiently. Here are key points related to variable speed pumps, particularly in the context of Pools, Hot Tubs Supplies, and Patio Lawn Garden:
Efficiency and Energy Savings:
- Variable speed pumps allow users to adjust the pump's speed and flow rate. Operating the pump at lower speeds during periods of lower demand can result in significant energy savings compared to traditional single-speed pumps.
Customizable Speeds:
- Variable speed pumps typically offer multiple speed settings.Users can customize the pump's speed based on factors such as the pool's size, filtration needs, and specific water features.
Quiet Operation:
- Compared to single-speed pumps that often operate at a constant high speed, variable speed pumps can run at lower speeds, resulting in quieter operation. This is especially beneficial for residential areas where noise may be a concern.
Extended Lifespan:
- The ability to operate at lower speeds can contribute to the longevity of the pump. Running the pump at reduced speeds reduces wear and tear on the components, potentially extending the overall lifespan of the pump.
Programmable Timers:
- Many variable speed pumps come with programmable timers, allowing users to set specific schedules for different speeds. This feature enhances automation and ensures optimal energy usage throughout the day.
Compliance with Energy Regulations:
- In many regions, there are energy efficiency regulations for pool equipment. Variable speed pumps are often designed to meet or exceed these standards, making them a compliant and environmentally friendly choice.
Compatibility with Pool Automation Systems:
- Variable speed pumps can be integrated into pool automation systems. This allows users to control and monitor the pump remotely, adjusting speed and schedules through dedicated apps or control panels.
Cost Considerations:
- While variable speed pumps may have a higher upfront cost compared to single-speed pumps, the potential energy savings over time can lead to cost-effectiveness in the long run.
Filtration and Water Quality:
- Variable speed pumps can be set to operate at lower speeds for filtration, providing thorough water circulation without excessive energy consumption. This contributes to better water quality and chemical distribution.
Installation and Maintenance:
- Variable speed pumps are typically easy to install and maintain. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the strainer basket and checking for debris, is essential to ensure optimal performance.
Before purchasing a variable speed pump, it's important for users to consider the specific needs of their pool or hot tub, the available features of the pump, and its compatibility with existing systems. Additionally, consulting with professionals in the pool and spa industry can provide valuable guidance.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this pump be sufficient for a 11,000 gallon pool which has a pv3 in-floor pool cleaning system? i currently have hayward sp3215ee tristar 1.5hp |
Answer: | I use this pump for my 18000 gallon pool. It is sufficient for that with the heat pump and pool vacuum cleaner when I need to clean the pool. I think it should be fine |
Question: | can i use this on a 30,000 gal pool |
Answer: | Yes. I have a 32,000 gallon pool and it works great. I have had this pump for tree years now. I run it year round. I went through two Hayward single stage pumps and I highly recommend this. Monthly electric bills are lower using this pump. I have never run my pump at a full rpm. I run the pump at 2200 rpm for 6 hours, 2800 rpm for 3 hours, and off the rest of the time. I have had to issues running a Polaris 280 with it. I just replace it though with an electric pool cleaner. |
Question: | How does this pump save me money? Why does it reduce the energy cost by up to 80%? Does it change speeds based on flow feedback |
Answer: | The pump has a variety of speeds. It is programmable. When mine turns on, it is programmed at high speed for 30 minutes to clear the surface and get the water moving. My pool man programmed it for me to drop to 30% for the next 5 hours. That saves me $$. Now if I'm having people over to swim, i can hit a quick clean button to clear the surface again. The longer i can keep the pump running at less than full power the more money I save. |
Question: | My 1hp pump went out and heard a variable speed pump is the way to go when replacing it. is it ok to go up to a 1.5 hp |
Answer: | Variable speed pumps can be set to handle different flows to accommodate pipe size, I use this pump to replace a 1.5 HP pool filter pump (2" pipe)and a 1 HP spa jets pump (1-1/2" pipe). Just program the speed (RPM) to accommodate the use and the flow of the pipe sizes. By only running the pump at the design capacity of the plumbing, noise is reduces to a wiper and it actually uses about half the energy that the original pump uses (in my case 400 watts vs 800 for the spa, yours may be different). All the speed in both pumps are set lower than 3000 RPM. No issues vacuuming (cleaning) and the Jets are quite strong in the spa). If you can effort the extra cost variable speed pumps are more versatile and they don't destroy their self by running full speed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a drop in for the hayward sp2605x7? i have to replace this pump which is less than two years old and want easy install |
Answer: | The Hayward SP2303VSP MaxFlo VS Variable-Speed Pool Pump will connect to 1-1/2" or 2" pvc, although the inlet is 7.63" high from the deck, but will require 230vac electrical service. The SuperPump SP2605X7 has inlet at 7.75" high from the deck, but can be field selected for 230vac (default) or 115vac electric service. |
Question: | Is it compliant with industry regulations including title 20 and apsp 15 and eligible for local utility rebates |
Answer: | The Hayward MaxFlo VS model # SP2303VSP is ENERGY STAR Certified and compliant with industry regulations including Title 20 and APSP 15. More information about the MaxFlo VS and utility rebates provided by particular utility services can be found at:https://www.hayward-pool.com/shop/en/pools/utility-rebates |
Question: | Will this model handle automation |
Answer: | The MaxFlo VS model # SP2303VSP is compatible with any automation system via relay control. It fully communicates with Hayward OmniLogic®, ProLogic rev 3 and up, AquaPlus rev 2.65 and up, E-Command 4 rev 2.8 and up, AquaLogic / E-Command rev 2.65 and up, and OnCommand rev 1.0 and up. |
Question: | Does this pump have its own timer, or does it need an additional timer to turn it on and off |
Answer: | It has its own timer. In fact, it can be programmed for up to eight different times. The nice thing about the variable speed pumps is that they never need to be completely off. I have mine programmed for five different times at variable speed‘s. The fastest speeds are at night when electricity is cheaper. During the day, I run it slowly just to move some water. It is so efficient that even running it 24/7 is cheaper than running eight hours on the 1.5 hp pump that I replaced. My pool water quality has never been this good and I am using much less chemical too. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | AMP DRAW |
Answer: | It isa variable speed pump and showes wattage draw on the screen as to speed |
Question: | Is the contol panel removable so that it can be relocated to a wall |
Answer: | Unfortunately no. |
Question: | can I wire it for 120V |
Answer: | My manual for the models CF VAR202 2HP and CF VAR302 3HP says Input voltage is 230v 50 or 60 Hz. |
Question: | What type of connection is it? Hard wired or plug-in |
Answer: | Hard Wired |
Question: | I have a hayward tristar vs 900 pool pump. Will this bolt right up to the pump housing |
Answer: | Yes this would fit the Hayward TriStar SP32900VSP VS900 1.85 hp pump. |
Question: | Will this replace an a.o. Smith sq1152 1 1/2 horse |
Answer: | I believe so, does your motor have a square flange? |
Question: | Will this replace the motor on a wfe-8 from pentair? my existing pump motor says 2 hp |
Answer: | The square flange appears to match the Pentair motor, so it will fit. You may, however, want to replace the 2HP impeller with the Pentair 1.5HP impeller to avoid overloading the 1.65HP motor at full speed. Your maximum flow rate and pressure will be lower, so be sure you can tolerate that. Don't forget to replace the shaft seals (Pentair parts). |
Question: | I have a 2.5 horsepower motor on my pump will this size horse power work on my pump housing |
Answer: | I'm not sure if it would present a problem, but I faced something similar with a 2HP original pump. I decided to change the impeller and diffuser to the size designed for a 1.5HP pump. This was to prevent overheating of the motor due to too great a power requirement for a given RPM. Your alternative of course is to buy the 3HP model. In my case I felt that 2HP was always an overkill for my system. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I'm having problem getting the lid off and suggestion? I would greatly appreciated |
Answer: | Yes, the lid can be hard to get off of the pump. What I use to make it easier is "O-Ring Lube", available at pool supply stores. Apply a thin coating to all mating surfaces and the O-ring seal. One other item I use is a strainer basket in the pool surface strainer, it catches most the leaves, so cleaning the basket on the pump doesn't have to be that often. Hope it helps you. |
Question: | How can I get an extended warranty beyond 1 year for this item? My last one didn't even last 2 years! Thanks |
Answer: | I don’t think you can. It’s a factory warranty and if you install it I have read that the factory warranty isn’t honored when I read other customers responses. If it’s installed by a pool company it’s honored. |
Question: | Does this work well with a sand filter |
Answer: | It works great with a sand filter |
Question: | How can I change it from 230 volts to |
Answer: | inside the rear cover there is a diagrahm of how to hook up to 115 volt and another diagrahm on how to connect to 230 volt.... |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which model can be plugged direcly into a house receptical without hard wiring |
Answer: | Neither model comes with a whip on it. You’ve gotta figure out what power you have available and buy according to that. Then you can wire a whip on it with a plug. Technically not hardwired at that point. |
Question: | Where can I find inlet and outlet connectors to purchase |
Answer: | any pool store |
Question: | I have a single speed pump that is 1.5 hp. How many hp this? is 1.5 hp some as |
Answer: | It’s .85 HP. The point of the variable speed is that you can run a lower HP motor longer at a lower speed, which costs less, but still recirculates the same amount of water. It depends on the size of your pool, how warm your weather is, how much you use the pool, etc. There are calculations tables online to determine this & examples of usage for variable speed motors. I went from a 1 HP single phase to this one & have a clear pool & my power bill decreased. |
Question: | I need a 1hp, why is pump only .085 hp |
Answer: | You don’t necessarily need a 1hp. You need to know how many gallons per minute your pool needs to circulate all your water through your filter in a day. If this pump will accomplish this then it’s fine. |
