11 best spa salt water systems
Saltwater pool systems, sometimes referred to as spa saltwater systems for hot tubs, offer an alternative method of sanitizing and maintaining water quality in pools and hot tubs. Here's what you need to know about spa saltwater systems:
Saltwater Chlorination: These systems use a process called electrolysis to convert salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine. When the saltwater passes through a salt cell or generator, an electrical charge separates the salt molecules into sodium and chloride ions. The chloride ions then combine to form chlorine, which sanitizes the water.
Benefits:
- Softer Water: Saltwater systems typically produce water that feels softer and less harsh on the skin and eyes compared to traditional chlorine pools.
- Lower Chlorine Odor: Saltwater pools tend to have less noticeable chlorine odor.
- Continuous Chlorine Production: Salt cells continuously produce chlorine as needed, maintaining a more consistent sanitizer level.
- Reduced Chemical Handling: You won't need to handle and store as many traditional pool chemicals.
Maintenance: While saltwater systems generally require less frequent monitoring and chemical adjustments than traditional chlorine pools, they still need regular maintenance. You should regularly check the salt level, pH balance, and alkalinity to ensure the system operates efficiently.
Initial Setup: To convert a traditional pool or hot tub into a saltwater system, you'll need to install a salt cell or generator and add the appropriate amount of salt to reach the recommended concentration (usually around 3,000 to 4,000 parts per million or ppm). The exact setup may vary depending on the system and manufacturer.
Salt Levels: Maintaining the proper salt concentration is crucial for the system to function correctly. Salt levels that are too low may lead to insufficient chlorine production, while levels that are too high can damage equipment and affect water quality.
Compatibility: Not all pools or hot tubs are suitable for saltwater systems. The materials used in the pool's construction, such as the liner or certain types of metals, can be affected by saltwater, so it's essential to ensure compatibility before installing such a system.
Cost: While saltwater systems can reduce ongoing chemical costs, the initial setup cost, including the purchase of the salt cell or generator, may be higher than traditional chlorination methods.
Safety: It's important to be aware that while saltwater pools have lower chlorine odor, they still contain chlorine, which can be harmful if ingested or if there is excessive exposure. Keep the water quality and safety in mind, especially if there are children using the pool or hot tub.
Regular Maintenance: In addition to monitoring salt levels, you'll also need to clean and inspect the salt cell periodically to ensure it operates efficiently. Proper maintenance will extend the lifespan of the system.
Spa saltwater systems can offer a more comfortable and convenient way to maintain the water quality in your hot tub or pool. However, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines and regularly check water parameters to ensure safe and enjoyable water conditions.

ControlOMatic Hot Tub and Spa Salt Water Chlorine Generators
ControlOMatic develops and manufactures saltwater chlorinators for the pool and spa industry throughout the world. For the last 30 years, saltwater pools have been in high demand due to improved water quality and the huge reduction in maintenance that a saltwater system provides. Until now, a smaller saltwater system designed for a spa or hot tub was not an option. The standard spa chlorine generators offered by ControlOMatic are very easy to install and do not require the spa to even be on or interfere with the current plumbing or electronics. Simply add salt, place in the water, turn it on, and let it run.
Easier On Skin and Eyes
High concentration levels of chlorine can be hard on the skin and hair. Because the ControlOMatic systems manage and produce a relatively consistent level of chlorine all the time, you would naturally avoid those high concentration peaks. Bathing in salt water creates skin-softening benefits. Plus, lower concentrations of chlorine mean less eye irritation.
Quit the Chemicals
Generally, it is found that most spa owners use their tub for six months out of the year and will need a lot of traditional chemicals. Installing a spa saltwater system allows spa owners to focus on other parts of their operations and to not need to constantly acquire more chemicals.
Swimsuit-Friendly
The soft water in a salt pool will reduce the effects of chemicals on users' swimsuits. Salt is the main ingredient used in the ControlOMatic chlorinating systems, and it will have a natural softening effect on the water in your pool or spa. Swimmers will be happy to know that their swimsuits are safe in our systems' salt water.
Reduced Maintenance
You don’t have to remember to add chlorine every day. Set it up once and the generator takes care of it from there. Your time and efforts will be saved, allowing you to use them effectively in other ways that are in your best interests. Make sure to keep an eye on the pH, as salt water chlorinators tend to raise the pH. You can use a mild acid or even white vinegar to lower the pH, or use dry acid (pH- or pH down).

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used in a chest freezer ice bath? How long do you think the water would last |
Answer: | In the trouble shooting guide, a frozen cell is an error condition, so probably can't use it in a freezer. |
Question: | Would this be safe to use with an extension cord |
Answer: | I currently have an extension cord running to mine, however I will run an electrical box in conduit in the spring, just so I dont have a cord running across my patio. This has been a great product. Been using it since November with no issues. I have never had to add any chlorine since installed. |
Question: | How much salt do you use? I have a 250 lb tub |
Answer: | I added way too much and had to drain my tub. Literally 1 cup at a time is best. Use a test strip specifically for salt tubs. I love it now. |
Question: | Are there any hot tubs that can't be converted to salt with a drop in? i bought a lifesmart ls350dx |
Answer: | I don't think so. HOWEVER if your heater is electric and internal to the water flow you should place a sacrificial zinc between the pump and the heater. Salt corrodes the electric heating element, sacrificial zinc ensures a longer life cycle for the heating element. |

Question: | Will this pump work for a 12’ round by 30” high pool |
Answer: | I would not advise using it unless it's a foot pedal one. The tube isn't that large but it does take a lot of air to inflate. I personally used my shop vac, switched the hose to blow outwards and taped it onto the tube. Filled up the tube in less than 5 secs. |
Question: | Will this with for a 22’x52” pool? Around 11,000 gallons of water |
Answer: | Foam sounds like a good idea, but it might just grow a bunch of mold.. We put ours on the exposed aggregate patio. Yes...we did...but I went to the local furniture store and asked if they had some LARGE pieces of thick cardboard. They were happy to send me with what was needed. We have the 10' pool so I used a string tied to a nail and scribed out a 10.5' circle then cut it out. This went under the pool and was covered with a tarp to help keep the cardboard from deteriorating over the summer. The cardboard was to keep the pool from getting holes from all the bouncing around that the kids do and to give it enough cushion if they fall. It has worked great.I looked at buying indoor outdoor carpet but it was more than I was willing to spend.. Sooooooo....This year I hit on a sale at Harbor Freight (sorry Amazon) and bought a bunch of those Anti-Fatigue Foam Mat sets of 4 with a 20% coupon, making them 6$ each. I think they will work great!! |
Question: | How much salt do I need to add to a 8x16’ pool with this filtration system |
Answer: | The filter pump does need to plug in |

User questions & answers
Question: | We are having difficult time getting this up and running. Any option to call someone to talk to |
Answer: | Blades are very sharp stainless...the rest is plastic...easy to use and store. |
Question: | I see a lot of great reviews for this cell. Are there any purchasers from early 2019 that are still happy with their purchase |
Answer: | yes you can use a block of cheese |
Question: | The wires for the new cell has one and two on the wires. Which goes to the red and which goes to the black wires to the hot tub |
Answer: | Even though I have a dishwasher I often wash the set by hand. It's no more dangerous than any other grater/cutter.. I have never cut myself washing it (although I did julienne my finger when cutting a carrot one time - my fault). Just be sure to make all your washing strokes in the opposite direction from the one you would use when cutting and you should be fine. |
Question: | I have a 2016 envoy and using chlorine. how do i know if this unit has an ace system, and if not is it possible to still convert to salt |
Answer: | Yes, as a matter of fact, this was the main reason for me to purchase this item. If you get the 3 lb bags of apples - they are small - like a tennis ball - they slice perfectly. Start it off without the gripper so you get a flat side of the apple, then put the gripper on and slice fast! They do slice thin, probably about the thickness of a greeting card. I pop them in the oven at about 190 degrees for about 45 minutes and they turn just a tad tan and get crisp. I don't season them at all though you can sprinkle some cinnamon if you want that flavor. They turn out great and you can eat a whole gallon ziploc bag of them without any guilt! |

Answer: | This chlorinator plugs into a standard, 110Volt GFCI receptacle. (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) The flow sensor should keep it from coming on when your pump is off. |
Question: | Will this work on an intex 15x48? Will i need to buy attachments? This is a pump right |
Answer: | I'm not sure what the HP stands for, but the phone number for Hayward is (908) 355-7995. I'm sure they will know the answer. |
Question: | How will I know how long to runthe each day? Trial and error |
Answer: | Install the cell unit in a vertical position preferably on the pressure side of the pump just where the filtered water enters the pool, this way the internal part of the cell will stay full of water and not run dry. However if you mount the cell horizontally, then an air pocket can form during the time the pump is at rest ,and can cause the cell to overheat, therefore a flow control valve needs to be installed just before the the cell (between the cell and the output from the pump) these flow control valves are in fact a large volume check valve and will not let water flow backward away from the cell and will insure the cell stays full of water during pump off time. That said , if all the components in the pump system (pump, filter, cell and associated hosing ) are on a plane and level relative to one another so that during pump shut down water will not 'run down hill or away from the cell then the cell will remain totally full of water even if the cell is mounted horizontally with out a control check valve. My cell is mounted vertically at the pool input port and is about 10 ft from the pump output. The pump and sand filter tank are raised about 8 inches above the ground so that the hosing and all remain full of water even during long periods of pump in activity. |
