12 best solar panels for pool heating

Solar panels for pool heating are a solar energy solution designed to warm the water in swimming pools, making them comfortable for swimming, even in cooler weather. These panels are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to extend the swimming season without relying on electricity or gas heating. Here's what you should know about solar panels for pool heating:

  1. Solar Heating Principle: Solar pool heating systems work by harnessing the energy from the sun to heat pool water. They consist of solar panels or collectors, typically installed on a roof or a ground-mounted structure, through which pool water is circulated.

  2. Collector Types: There are two primary types of solar collectors used for pool heating:

    • Flat-Plate Collectors: These are made of flat, insulated metal or plastic panels with tubes running through them. Pool water flows through these tubes and gets heated by the sun.
    • Solar Vacuum Tubes: These collectors use a series of vacuum tubes to absorb and trap heat, making them more efficient in colder climates.
  3. Circulation System: A pool pump is used to circulate the pool water through the solar collectors. As the water flows through the collector system, it absorbs heat from the sun-warmed panels, raising its temperature.

  4. Temperature Control: Many solar pool heating systems include a control mechanism or diverter valve that allows you to regulate the flow of water through the solar collectors. This control enables you to adjust the water temperature in the pool.

  5. Installation: Solar panels for pool heating can be installed on a rooftop, mounted on a ground structure, or on a nearby flat surface with access to sunlight. The installation process typically involves connecting the solar panels to the pool's plumbing system.

  6. Size and Efficiency: The size and efficiency of the solar panel system depend on factors such as the pool size, location, and desired water temperature. Larger collector surface areas are more efficient for heating larger pools.

  7. Seasonal Use: Solar pool heating systems are most effective in regions with ample sunlight. They work best during the swimming season when sunlight is abundant. In colder climates or during the off-season, you may need an additional heating source.

  8. Cost Savings: Solar panels for pool heating can significantly reduce the operating costs of maintaining a pool compared to electric or gas heaters. Once installed, they rely on free solar energy, which means lower utility bills.

  9. Environmental Benefits: Solar pool heating is an eco-friendly solution because it uses clean, renewable energy from the sun. It helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with heating a pool.

  10. Maintenance: Solar panels for pool heating are generally low-maintenance. Periodic cleaning of the solar collectors to remove dirt and debris is usually all that's required to keep them functioning efficiently.

Solar panels for pool heating are a popular choice for pool owners who want to enjoy a warmer swimming experience while minimizing energy costs and environmental impact. They are a sustainable and efficient solution for heating your pool using the power of the sun.

Solar Sun Rings

Based on 328 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Solar Sun Rings are passive solar swimming pool heating devices, constructed from two layers of U.V. resistant vinyl. The upper clear layer directs the suns rays onto the bottom blue layer which absorbs about 50% of the sunlight, converting it to heat. The remaining sunlight filters through the ring into your pool water. The majority of heat loss from a pool comes from the water surface at night. Solar Sun Rings do not cover the entire surface of your pool; therefore it allows heat to escape. To help keep the warm water in your pool at night we recommend you use additional insulation such as solar fish or a solar blanket. Do not over inflate. Do not use as a flotation device. Note: Solar Sun Rings may vary in color and design from one manufacturing lot to the next. If you are purchasing additional rings to add to your existing rings they will be functionally the same, but may appear visually different. Coverage: Solar Sun Rings are warranted to be free of manufacturing defects for two years. Warranty is limited to materials and workmanship.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the warranty
Answer: None. Unless you pay for postage and restocking and that all most covers your costs so there is no warranty
Question: How do we get these to lay flat? We tried deflating them a little but the ends are still bending
Answer: I found even after deflating they still bend. Not Until they are in the sun for a bit will they level out.
Question: What is the size of the ring
Answer: they are the size as to their description Love them uase them all the time
Question: I can not seem to see the size
Answer: Without going out to my storage unit to invlate and measure them, I think they are about 5 or 5.6" in diameter. Hope that helps.
Question: Can this vacuum head be used for vinyl liner pools
Answer: I have owned both vinyl liner and concrete pools. This head would be better for concrete. For vinyl liner pools, I prefer a vacuum head that has bristles on it. This head may work for vinyl, but it was designed for concrete/guinite.
Question: Is this for a vinyl liner (above ground) or gunite
Answer: It works great for gunite. Just keep in mind that it is very wide so you'll get done a lot quicker.
Question: Is delivery fast
Answer: Yes.
Question: Bought aquaflex 1.5 inch hose with rotating cuffs to go with this vacuum, but it keeps coming off vacuum despite tryin evrything. Am I missin smethng
Answer: We do not have that problem with our 1.5" rotating cuff. I can only assume the cuff is too large and needs to be replaced. This is the hose we purchased and we haven't had any issues, owned over a year. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005SS9EB0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

User questions & answers

Question: What size are the hose connections
Answer: It can hook up to 1.25 intex or 1.5 hose. You need gaskets though.
Question: How would this work for heating my 40 gal hot water heater
Answer: I'm presently heating 60 gallons. Keep in mind it only heats as long as is on the unit. You will need a pump to circulate the water and dual shut off valves to isolate the water while it is heating. I heat a jacuzzi with mine and in the peak of summer I got over 120° incoming water. Good luck.
Question: Can you connect several of them together easily
Answer: Yes, it has a connection hose and clamps with each one to tie one, two or more together. Hint: make sure you silicone the caps and threaded fittings. I did even with the Teflon Tape to insure no leaks. Work great.
Question: Doe it work with a sand filter
Answer: Yes it works with a sand filter. It also works with salt water systems. I installed mine downstream from the filter on the inlet line to the pool and before the chlorine generator. I would not install it upstream from the pump and filter because you don't want any debris that gets past the skimmer to get into the heater to potentially cause blockages. It doesn't have to be before the chlorine generator either, that's just how mine worked out.
Question: What is included
Answer: Included are mounts for concrete (looks difficult) and mount for ladder, that was a snap. Almost returned, test button not too loud, but my wife set it off packaging it, service level is adequate for alarm. Not insane, but you can hear it inside.
Question: do you think it is sensitive enough for a 15 pound dog? Also, do you think it would work with the pool thermal blanket on
Answer: As to the 15 pound dog, yes if properly set and tested. The sensitivity changes according to how high or low from the water surface the sensor is. As to a thermal blanket, I have no idea.
Question: Can this be used in an above ground pool
Answer: Don't see why not, it attached to our ladder to our inground pool but should work for you as long as you have something similar to attach it to.
Question: does this unit require additional hardware etc for this unit to work or is it all included? also what type of electricity is required to the unit
Answer: It's battery powered and it comes with all hardware. It screws to the pool deck, in my case I had to have a masonry drill bit
Question: Can this detect motion from a dog that weighs 10 pounds
Answer: Depends on how close to the alarm set dog falls in, if it doesn’t cause a wave enough to move the floating cone then it won’t sound the alarm
Question: How come this doesn’t work in polls below the ground
Answer: It just doesn’t work. Don’t buy us unless you have an Indoor pool because a slight breeze will sound the alarm
Question: Not to many details provided on amazon...is this alarm simple to turn off when maintaining/ cleaning pool? Also, any indication when battery is dead
Answer: No
Question: is there an alarm that hooks to ladder
Answer: No
Question: Does this work with an above-ground pool liner? Would the alarm go off at any movement of the liner
Answer: Ours is in an above-ground pool. You have to place it so it’s not in line with the filter output. It works well.
Question: Can this be used in in ground pools
Answer: No this is designed for above ground pools only. Try the Pooleye PE23
Question: Will this alert you to a 6 pound dog falling in
Answer: Sadly I doubt it would- I believe it had to be like 19-25 pounds to sound the alarm. Can you install a gate? This is scary for you… I wish Good luck with your dog!!
Question: How does it connect to the alarm in the house
Answer: It connects through wifi to another transmitter you charge in house. It's really loud regardless. You won't miss the alarm.
Question: does it have to be tethered ,or can it float free
Answer: it comes with a long tether that can be easily shortened without cutting it, but you could let it float around without it. If it is free floating be sure it is alarming properly. Its alarm sensitivity is also very adjustable. Note: rain will also likely set it off.
Question: Will it work if a small, 8-pound dog falls in
Answer: I believe it will work. Our cats, 10# and 11# both fell in and it went off. Also, my husband forgot it was in and just dangled his feet and it went off. We have been really pleased with it.

Product features

Sensitivity Adustment

Turning the black flotation base clockwise or counterclockwise raises or lowers the sensing ring with respect to the water. stops. Do not force it. This is the most sensitive position and the position that was used to pass ASTM testing. Moving the float from this position will no longer meet ASTM requirements The closer the sensing ring is to the water, the more sensitive the alarm. Turn the black flotation base gently clockwise until it.

Sensitivity Marks

The “Sensitivity Marks” can be used as a general indicator for the sensitivity position. Should the sensitivity need to be adjusted start making adjustments by turning the float only a ¼ turn at a time. Test the alarm after each adjustment. We do not recommend turning the float out more than three full turns.

Alarm Placement for pools 20x40 ft or smaller

One pool alarm can be used for all pool types. This includes aboveground, in-ground, inflatable and soft side pools.

Alarm Placement for pools larger then 20x40 ft

It is recommended that more than one alarm should be used in pools larger than 20x40 ft.

RECEIVER

Your receiver works with the pool alarm allowing you to monitor your pool from within your house. When the floating alarm is activated it sends a signal to activate the receiver.

Transmission Modes

The receiver has two modes of operation: Serial Number mode (SN mode) and ID mode. When the receiver is in SN mode it will accept the transmission of any Pool Patrol transmitter (this is the default setting). The serial number is common to all transmitters. When the receiver is in ID mode it will accept the serial number plus the ID number of the transmission. The ID number is unique to each transmitter.

RECEIVER PLACEMENT

It is best to place the receiver next to a window or wood door adjacent to the pool with-in 200 feet from the transmitter. Do not place the receiver near steel walls, cabinets, on or alongside an electrical appliance, such as a computer, or on a metal surface as this may affect signal reception. The pool alarm will not transmit its signal through the ground.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use a submersible pump that generate 10 psi at the solar panel's inlet? 1.5 HP sounds like an overkill and involves high energy to run
Answer: Given that our pump shows a bit more than 10 psi (four panels, connected in paralell) I can't see why 10 at the inlet won't work. I found these panels worked more efficiently (much higher flow) plumbing two intakes at one end, and one return at the other. There is more pipe involved, but i was able to use my existing Intex pool pump with about 18ft of head on the system.
Question: I have a 14' x 40' inground pool; would everyone recommend that I buy two of these to go along the entire length of the pool, would one be okay
Answer: Unless your pool is only 2 feet deep, you definitely need at least 2 panels. I have a 14' x 30' pool and 2 is the correct number for sufficient heating in TX. Rule of thumb, 1 panel for every 5000 gallons of pool. Also, you don't need to run them the length of the pool end to end. I have mine side by side up on top of the roof of my pergola. That way they don't take up as much room. I've also installed them side by side up on the house roof.
Question: Is this one 4x20 piece or two seperate 2x10 pieces
Answer: A 4x20 package is two 2x20 panels with a short section of hose to connect them together.
Question: Are you able to curve it around a pool or must it be straight out
Answer: The panels actually come rolled up so curving them should not be a problem.

User questions & answers

Question: How do i properly adjust valves to get best operation of these panels
Answer: I just connected system to discharge line (2") to pool as source and then returned to same discharge line as return from sun exposure. Also included a 1/2" pipe at top of return end of system with a valve on it to allow for release of air which in fact takes time to push through.
Question: If a leak forms can it be patched?? If so what is needed
Answer: Depends on where the leak is. If it is in a tube yes. The mfg has a kit I believe.
Question: Is this for in-ground or above-ground pools? The item title says in-ground but the box in the photo says above-ground. (My pool is above-ground
Answer: I use it for an in ground pool and works perfect. It will also work for an above ground pool if you have the proper piping. All it does is, that the same pool pump you have runs the water through the panels before going back into the pool
Question: I have a 12.5' x 22' inground pool and i live in florida. any idea of how many boxes i should order? thanks
Answer: I would not go with less than 4 panels. You should base the number of panels on the sf of your pools surface and the amount of sun the panels will receive. I recall reading somewhere that the surface of the panels should be no less than 60% of your pool surface if you want to gain any advantage by using solar. On a pool your size, with the panels in the sun, in Florida, four panels would give you a long swimming season. While I'm too cheap to use an automatic temperature valve for the panels, you may want to consider it. I believe building code requires some sort of safety device that will prevent scalding. I learned the hard way that if you turn the panels on late in the day that water coming out of your supply line will be hotter than McDonalds coffee. I live in SW Florida.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these panels expandable
Answer: yes of course, everything you need there at Home Depotbest gds hans
Question: I am using a low flow solar pump. I think I should remove the baffle and block the flow between sections so water flows up onside and down the other
Answer: That is exactly what I did. I plugged the hole in the baffle disc and diverted the water into two sections at a time. So I have a total of ten sections and the water travels up two, then back two, then backup two, until it exits. My pump is a 6 gpm solar pump and it works fine.
Question: How many panels do you receive? Picture shows
Answer: You receive 2 panels, each with 2 sections, so 4 ribbons. I say this because if this is at an angle it will sag. I squeeze it between 2 boards at various points because I have it at an angle on a rig above the ground.
Question: How many HP does your pump have to be for this solar heater
Answer: I used two of these on my 10,000 gallon pool. I did not use my 1hp pool pump ( I did not want to run it for 8 hours a day). I set up a small 250 GPH utility pump to circulate water. I run it for 8 hours a day at a cost of about 15 cents a day. The incoming temp was about 75- outgoing about 100. It resulted in a raise of total pool temp of about 8 degrees. The HP of the circulating pump does not make a difference. Only a set amount of Sun energy can be transferred to the water based on the sq. footage of the panels, amount of sun and hours per day of circulation. The HP or GPH will not make a difference as long as you are circulating water through the panel.

Product description

Manufactured by the premier company in the solar business (they have installed over 125000 solar systems), these panels have been efficiently heating swimming pools since 1972. Solar Bear's surface is fully whetted by pool water insuring the most efficient panel available. Extra large 2-inch headers do not slow down your pool's circulation and ensure excellent solar heat transfer to your pool's water. Smaller 1-1/2-inch headers can reduce your pool's circulation and cause solar heating to be compromised. Solar Bear systems are comprised of a single extra-large 4-feet by 20-feet collector with no couplings or connectors. The system is made of U.V. stabilized polyethylene that is very tough and will last many seasons under direct sunlight. The systems come complete with an integral bypass valve, so you can turn them on and off as needed. Solar Bear panels can be mounted on the ground, on a rack, or a nearby roof. Complete installation and user's manuals are included. 10-Year Warranty. Put solar to work in your pool and swim in a warmer pool without the huge expense of heating it. Note: For panels to heat optimally, they must receive unobstructed sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

  • Package includes 4' x 20' Wide Solar Collector with 1-1/2" barb connections, 12 mounting caps, 12 mounting bases, 6 mounting straps, 1 valve handle and 20 rubber tube plugs
  • Pool pump circulates pool water through the heated solar collector
  • Optimal heating with unobstructed sunlight between 10am and 4pm. Performs most effectively when tilted 10 to 30 degrees to the South
  • Mount on the ground, on a rack, or nearby roof
  • Additional materials required: 1-1/2" I.D. flexible hose and ground spikes (ground installation)

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work on 17000 gallon pool
Answer: I believe so- we have a 15 foot by 30 foot oval pool and I think that is 15,000 or 17,000 gallons of water. We have had our solar cover since last summer and we are very happy with it. It is a good quality cover.
Question: Is this kit for above-ground or in-ground pools? Ours is in-ground
Answer: It works for both in-ground and above-ground pools. You connect it to the pool pump so you will need a diversion valve.
Question: Has anybody use this for an inground pool? And how did it work
Answer: I have not used this for an inground pool, but the pool type should not matter. As water is moves through the panel, it picks up a little heat on each pass. The amount of heat is determined by the number of panels. The only difference between inground and above ground pools that would be an issue is heat loss, which would depend on your environment and pool materials.
Question: How many gallons of water does the 4 ft x 20 ft panel itself hold
Answer: Don't know but it isn't much as heating tubes so small. Never seems to be too much water that drains out when I put away for winter

User questions & answers

Question: How to repair a hole it it
Answer: The panels require special plugs which, I believe, are available through Amazon. I have not had to repair mine.
Question: what is the diameter of the pipe? (1.5" or
Answer: the included adaptors are for 1 1/2 in, the openings are threaded 1 1/2 in pipe thread, I use standard 1 1/2 in pool hoses ,like the ones you would use for a pool vacuum cleaner and hose clamps. these are good pool heaters, use a solar cover when not in use to retain heat,I am using 4 panels and can get my pool so hot it is uncomfortable. my pool is under a 20 by 20 portable shelter, and the panels drape over the top and are connected in parralell series, with a 2500 gph pump dedicated to just the heaters. I hope this helps,.
Question: If I install 6- 4x12 panels I have a 2 hp pump is that ok
Answer: Sorry, as a consumer I am not qualified to answer as best practice. Variables include but are limited to GPM, pressure, and friction loss.
Question: Are these panels or are they flexible like a mat
Answer: flexible like a mat. They arrive in a roll.

SolarPoolRepair Vacuum Relief Valve for Solar Pool Heaters (2")

Based on 59 reviews Check latest price

Product description

This vacuum relief valve (vacuum breaker) is designed specifically for solar pool heater applications.

This VRV is typically installed using a rubber coupler hose and hose clamps.

For solar pool panels with 2" I.D. header manifolds and 2.375" (2-3/8") I.D. rubber hose couplers.

This is a ball spring (5#) type check valve that is typically installed at the highest point in a solar pool heating system; by allowing air to enter the pool solar panels, it aids in gravity drainage of solar pool collectors and piping.

Internal components feature a Viton o-ring, glass-reinforced ball, and 5# stainless steel spring.

  • For pool solar panels with 2" headers (2" manifold I.D. / 2.375" O.D.)
  • Fits rubber hose couplers with 2.375" (2-3/8") I.D.
  • Viton o-ring for a durable and lasting seal
  • Stainless steel spring and glass-reinforced ball
  • Assists in gravity drainage of pool solar panels and piping

User questions & answers

Question: bleeding function also? Or just for vacuum. Or it let the air in the pipe out also
Answer: It is a one way valve, so it lets air into the system to allow gravity drainage of the water.
Question: what is the outside diameter
Answer: OD of the part that goes inside the pipe of the solar system is 2.25" The OD of the outer ring on the end is ~2.75" Not sure why they call this a 2" size.
Question: Do these work well with low speed pumps? My current one works great when the pump is on high but when it's on low it leask air
Answer: If the pump can’t keep the solar panel full, water rushing back down will always suck air. Most of the time, the pump ramps up to overcome that. Add a manual ball valve and close it over the summer if you don’t have that option.
Question: What is OD
Answer: 1 1/2
