6 best pool deck paints

Pool deck paints are specialized coatings designed to enhance the aesthetic appeal and durability of pool decks. These paints are formulated to withstand exposure to water, sunlight, and pool chemicals while providing a slip-resistant surface. Here are key points about pool deck paints:

  1. Purpose:

    • The primary purpose of pool deck paints is to protect and beautify the surface of the pool deck. They create a durable coating that resists damage from UV rays, water exposure, and chemicals commonly used in pools.
  2. Material Composition:

    • Pool deck paints are often made from a blend of acrylics or epoxy resins, which provide durability, water resistance, and adhesion to the substrate.
  3. Color and Finish Options:

    • Pool deck paints come in a variety of colors and finishes, allowing homeowners to choose a style that complements the overall design of their outdoor space. Common finishes include matte, satin, or glossy.
  4. Slip-Resistance:

    • Many pool deck paints include additives or textured finishes to improve slip resistance. This is especially important to enhance safety around the pool area, where surfaces can become slippery.
  5. Application:

    • Proper surface preparation is essential before applying pool deck paint. This may involve cleaning the surface thoroughly, repairing any cracks or damage, and applying a primer for better adhesion.
    • Application methods can include brushing, rolling, or spraying, depending on the product and the desired finish.
  6. Drying and Curing Time:

    • Pool deck paints typically have specific drying and curing times. It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding these timelines to ensure a proper and long-lasting finish.
  7. Resistance to Pool Chemicals:

    • Quality pool deck paints are resistant to the chemicals commonly used in swimming pools, such as chlorine and bromine. This helps maintain the integrity of the coating over time.
  8. Weather Resistance:

    • Pool deck paints are formulated to withstand various weather conditions, including exposure to sunlight, rain, and temperature fluctuations. UV-resistant formulations prevent the paint from fading or deteriorating over time.
  9. Maintenance:

    • Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and inspecting the painted surface, is important for the longevity of the finish. Some pool deck paints may require periodic recoating to maintain their protective properties.
  10. Cost Considerations:

    • The cost of pool deck paints can vary based on factors such as brand, quality, and coverage. While high-quality paints may have a higher upfront cost, they often provide better durability and longevity.

Pool deck paints are an effective way to rejuvenate and protect the surfaces surrounding swimming pools. Choosing a paint specifically designed for pool decks, proper application, and regular maintenance are key to ensuring a beautiful and long-lasting finish.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of primer do i need for an aluminum pool deck
Answer: Thanks for reaching out! We would suggest the INSL-X Aqua Lock Primer for priming the aluminum pool deck. Please reach out to inslx. reviews @ gmail. com should you have any other questions.
Question: Can this be used on diving boards
Answer: Hello, we are unable to recommend Sure Step for utilization on a diving board. While it is a flexible latex coating, we have not explicitly tested it for such a purpose and you may experience cracking once the diving board is put back into use.
Question: Can this be used on asphalt
Answer: Hi, thanks for your question. Newly laid asphalt surfaces should be allowed to cure 45 to 60 days before coating. This curing time frame is necessary for all the solvents in the asphalt to evaporate. The surface must be free of dirt, loose gravel, oil or other foreign matter that could be detrimental to coating adhesion. Any oil or grease spots must be treated with an Oil and Grease Emulsifier. Best results for general preparation will be obtained by power washing; however, conscientious sweeping and water hose rinsing may suffice. Sure Step® is self – priming on bare asphalt.
Question: How many coats are recommended for a previous stained deck
Answer: For previously coated surfaces: Remove all dirt, dust, chalk, mildew or flaking paint by power washing. An alternate method is to scrape, wire brush, wash the surface with a solution of one part bleach to three parts water, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow it to dry. Sure Step may be easily applied by roller, brush or squeegee. Stir contents thoroughly to assure even dispersion of pigment. Apply product at a rate of 80 to 120 square feet per gallon. May be recoated in 8 hours under good drying conditions. Two coats of Sure Step are required for proper performance.
Question: Do you have to apply the cool deck coats and then another clear sealer on top of that? What kind of clear sealer do you get
Answer: The COO! pool deck BUNDLE comes with one gallon of Triple Crown Cleaner and a half gallon of the SealBack Clear Sealer. SealBack is a water based acrylic sealer that is engineered for sealing the COOL! coating itself. It's water thin, delivering great penetration. We recommend 2 GOOD coats of COOL in the morning hours before temperatures get too hot (use 3/4" nap rollers) , and 2 THIN coats of SealBack during the hottest part of the day(use 1/2" nap rollers)! The SealBack sealer loves to be applied in the bright sunshine for maximum cure. Thank you and reach out to us anytime! (888) 776-2242 .
Question: How long does it take for the sealer to dry
Answer: Hi. Thanks for your question. In a typical application, the sealer will be dry and open for foot traffic in one hour. However, you should not apply the sealer if rain is in the 24 hour forecast. Hope this helps! We appreciate your interest in our product.
Question: Can this be used on a wooden deck
Answer: Hi. No. Cool is only for concrete. Thanks for your interest in our product.
Question: What type of paint and how much
Answer: Add 1 gallon of paint to the product.

User questions & answers

Question: I have old Keystone Kool deck which has some cracks. Can this product be applied like paint over it using a paint roller
Answer: Hi Alejandro.Yes, Cool is rolled onto your pool deck surface using a 1/2" - 3/4" nap roller cover. It does a good job of filling in the smaller cracks (under 1/8"). For larger cracks, you should fill them with Cool using a paint brush. Apply the coating into the cleaned crack and then feather out the edges so you don't end up with lap marks once it dries. After the patchwork is dry, roll out your two coats and the patch should virtually disappear. Cool applies much like paint does and you'll find that it's a super-friendly product to use. If you have any other questions, you can contact Encore's customer support at 888-776-2242.
Question: does it stain easily
Answer: Would not recommend! It stains easily , but it is still hot to the feet!!! Very disappointed, for the price!
Question: How thickly can the coating be applied. I have a standing water from a poorly laid concrete extension and a feathered thickness of 3/8" would fix it
Answer: Hi. Thanks for your question. Cool can be applied in multiple coats to correct small issues with standing water. However, when you get to 3/8", you're probably better off with a leveling compound that you can find at your local home improvement center. These compounds are less expensive and do a good job of repairing issues such as yours. Good luck and let us know if we can help you with any other questions!
Question: Will it adhere to hydraulic cement? I've done some mortar repairs on my brick pool deck using hydraulic cement and want to confirm it'll stick to that
Answer: Hi. Thanks for your question. Yes, Cool is compatible with hydraulic cement. It will adhere to the patch. However, be aware that if the patch fails, the coating will also fail. Patch failure can come from improper preparation of the surface, improper mixing of the cement patch, the patch not being properly applied, and from environmental impact (water intrusion, impact from heavy objects, etc.) All in all, if you properly prepare and apply the patch, Cool is perfectly suited to overcoat it. Thanks for your interest in our product.

  • Textured for Slip Resistance
  • No Need to Mix
  • Resists Peeling & Chipping

User questions & answers

Question: Can Patio Tones be used on a wood deck or dock
Answer: Durabak can certainly be brushed, roller or sprayed. Usually one would only use a brush in corners or tight areas. It is most common to use a roller to apply Durabak. When using a roller for the textured version you should only use Durabak's Stipple Roller Sleeve.
Question: How soon can we walk on this after painting? and will it cover existing painted pool deck? What kind of prep work is required
Answer: Surface absolutely must be dry and free of oil or grease. A rough surface is better for adhesion. I rolled this product over my 30 year old boat floor fiberglass surface after I removed the old carpet. Only prep I did was scrubbed old surface with a typical hand brush and vacuumed up all loose material. Mix the paint very very well with a wooden stir stick...do NOT shake it. Poured the product onto the floor and used thin nap paint roller to spread it out evenly. Dried by end of day. Do not paint it over silicon as it will not adhere to that.
Question: Does this paint adhere well to exposed aggregate
Answer: It is best to apply Durabak between 32 degrees and less than 90 degrees. Applying it in temps of 90 degrees and above will make it hard to apply as the Durabak may set up too quickly and it will therefore be hard to work with. Durabak needs heat and humidity to cure so applications at the low end of the temperature range would take longer to cure. Optimal temps would be between 70-85 degrees.
Question: Is there a color that is more grey than brown
Answer: Yes, you definitely can. You can do both the Textured version or the Smooth version. You may want to do the Textured on the bottom half and the Smooth on the top half. Many customers have coated the full vehicle with Durabak.

Question: What color is the paint
Answer: The paint that I used was blue. It’s whatever color your decking is.
Question: How do you prep for painting
Answer: I covered my pool with plastic, duct tape and external masking tape, then used a belt sander and sanded my deck then masked all of the outlined white area’s of the pool. Be sure to do the bottom part of the railing and underneath of the railing just in case you get paid on it. Once prepped and ready I painted and let dry for a day or so and then applied a second coat. In the past I don’t put one coat on and it only last for a year or two. I just did mine last week and came out pretty good. Hopefully won’t have to do it for a few years.

In The Swim Epoxy Primer for Epoxy-Base Swimming Pool Paints

In The Swim Epoxy Primer is for use on uncoated concrete or plaster interiors. Epoxy primer soaks into the interior surface sealing and provides a surface for the epoxy paint to adhere too. Epoxy Primer can be used on damp surfaces. This will cut prep time allowing the pool to be prepped and primed in one day. It is not suggested to use the Epoxy Primer over an existing coating. In The Swim Epoxy Primer should be applied with a roller. Coverage: 200 - 250 sq ft per gallon on average. Apply this product liberally using a 1/2" nap roller cover. Pot Life: 2 hours at 90° F. Curing Time before rolling Super Poxy Shield 24 - 48 hours.

Determine Area Size

Determining the square foot of the area you are going to paint is important. This will help you figure out how many gallons of paint are needed to complete the job. It’s important to take the surface porosity and smoothness into account. When looking at how much paint you should purchase. Start by measuring the length and width of the area. Once you have those measurements plug them into the formulas below. Divide that number by the coverage square foot of the paint you are wanting to use. That will give you the number of gallons that you should purchase. Remember to look and see if the paint requires single or multiple coats and if it needs a primer.

Drain Water

Now that you have selected the paint type and know the square footage of the interior, it’s time to drain the pool. Rent or purchase a submersible pump. As soon as the outside ambient air temperature drops below 85° F. Check the local code for where pool water can be drained and start pumping. If the outside ambient air temperature is above 85° F stop draining the pool. At these elevated temperatures, the interior surface can crack and lose its structural integrity. While the pool is draining, remember that you can start to prepare the pool for paint.

Prepare for Paint

Now that the pool has been drained, you can start to prep the interior for paint. Start by removing the perimeter return jets, pool/spa light, main drain covers, aerator fittings and any other item you don’t want painted. Using painters tape, carefully tape off all the tile line, step/bench tiles, return lines, and skimmer mouth. Once you have everything taped off it’s time to prime.

Primer Coat

Now that the pool has been drained and taped, it’s time to prime. Remember not all types of paint use a primer. So if you have paint that doesn’t use a primer, skip to the painting step. Roll the primer onto the interior surface of the pool using a 9” roller with a ½” nap, starting with the walls and ending with the floor. Once you’ve completed priming allow the prime to cure for 24 - 48 hours. Then it’s time to paint.

Painting Interior

The pool has now been drained, taped, and primed. It’s time for paint. The type of paint you choose will determine the number of coats. Start painting the walls first and finish with the floor. If the paint you are using requires a time period in between coats, make sure you take that time. It will allow the paint to cure and harden increasing its chemical resistance and life span. It is suggested for steps, shallow areas and wading pools, sprinkle sand on the coating before it dries to make the area slip-resistant.

Fill and Balance

Now that the pool is painted and the paint has cured, it’s time to fill the pool and balance the water. Depending on your area you may need to order a water truck to deliver. If you have a garden hose available, toss it in. The average pool should take anywhere from 36 - 48 hours to fill. Once the pool is full allow the fresh water to circulate for 3 - 4 hours. After the circulation period it’s time to complete the first water test of many on the new water. Make sure to test the water weekly to maintain proper water balance and overall pool health.
