10 best test pool waters
Testing pool water is an essential part of pool maintenance to ensure that the water is safe, clean, and balanced for swimming. Water test kits and related products are commonly used by pool owners to monitor and adjust the chemical composition of their pool water. Here's what you need to know about testing pool waters:
Water Test Kits:
- Water test kits are tools used to measure various chemical parameters of pool water. They typically include test strips, liquid reagents, or digital testers to check the levels of essential chemicals.
pH Level:
- One of the most critical factors in pool water testing is the pH level. pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of the water. Maintaining the correct pH level (usually between 7.4 and 7.6) is crucial for swimmer comfort and to prevent damage to pool equipment.
Chlorine Levels:
- Chlorine is commonly used as a disinfectant in pools to kill bacteria and algae. Water test kits measure the chlorine levels to ensure they are within the recommended range for safe swimming.
Total Alkalinity:
- Total alkalinity is a measure of the water's ability to resist changes in pH. Proper total alkalinity levels help stabilize pH and prevent rapid fluctuations.
Calcium Hardness:
- Calcium hardness refers to the concentration of calcium ions in the water. Maintaining the right calcium hardness level is important to prevent water from becoming too soft or too hard, which can cause equipment damage and water problems.
Cyanuric Acid (CYA):
- Cyanuric acid, also known as stabilizer or conditioner, helps protect chlorine from being broken down by sunlight. It is essential to maintain the correct CYA levels to ensure the effectiveness of chlorine.
Testing Frequency:
- Pool owners should test their pool water regularly, ideally at least once a week, and more frequently during periods of heavy use or extreme weather conditions.
Chemical Adjustments:
- Based on the test results, pool owners can make chemical adjustments using pool chemicals like pH increasers, pH reducers, chlorine tablets, shock treatments, and calcium hardness increasers.
Water Balancing:
- Proper water balancing involves adjusting the pool's chemical parameters to ensure they are within the recommended ranges. This helps prevent issues such as algae growth, cloudy water, and equipment damage.
Safety and Health:
- Regular water testing is essential for ensuring that pool water is safe for swimmers.Imbalanced water can lead to health issues, skin and eye irritation, and damage to pool equipment.
Maintenance Products:
- In addition to test kits, pool owners may use cleaning tools, chemicals, and other supplies like pool skimmers, brushes, and vacuum systems to keep the pool water clean and clear.
Pool and Hot Tub Supplies:
- Water testing products, chemicals, and pool maintenance tools can be found in the pool and hot tub supplies category in stores and online retailers.
In summary, testing pool water is crucial for maintaining a safe and enjoyable swimming environment. Regular testing, proper chemical adjustments, and good maintenance practices are essential for keeping pool water clean and balanced. Water test kits and related products play a vital role in this process.

User questions & answers
Question: | How many times each strip can be used |
Answer: | The answer from DeanP66 is correct; the other three are not. While it's true that the testing tube has a color scale, that's for testing pH, not Chlorine. This test kit makes measuring Chlorine levels very accurate. Is it still pink, or is it clear? Simple. No guessing whether the color is this shade or that shade. As for the pH test (where the color chart IS on the test tube), I have to say I love how easy it is to read. With traditional test strips, I can never tell what shade of orange matches the side of the bottle, but with this kit it's always easy to see. Both the colored water and the color chart are transparent, so you look through both at the same time right next to each other. No guessing. Plus, there's a chart provided in the book that comes with the kit that tells you exactly how much pH increaser or decreaser you'll need to bring things into balance. No more back and forth from adding too much and needing to compensate back the other way. You get it right the first time every time. If you want accurate measurements with no more guesswork, this is a great kit. Plus, you get to pretend you're a doing a science experiment! Of course, if you can't be bothered to spend more than 10 seconds testing your spa, go for test strips instead. |
Question: | Do you get the strips with your order or are the ordered separately |
Answer: | It fits all the bottles that come in the kit. I couldn’t tell you what it would fit if it didn’t come in the kit. |
Question: | can i use the brand test strips I already have with this reader |
Answer: | combined chlorine-yes. total dissolved solids-no. phosphates-no. saturation index-kit tests chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid (stabilizer), which everything you need to calculate the saturation index using the enclosed wheel. this is the best kit on the market. taylor also makes a phosphate test kit, which i use. |
Question: | Does it work for baquacil pools or just chlorine |
Answer: | Absolutely, the kit comes with 3 bottles of solution to test CYA. You use the small side of the pH tester to test cyanaric acid. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how many uses does it last when using 5 drops each time |
Answer: | Hello MG120, Thank you for inquiring about our Safe Home ULTIMATE Drinking Water Kit, with testing for 200 different contaminants at our EPA-certified lab. In this kit, we do not test for S-(elemental sulfur) nor do we test for H2S-(hydrogen sulfide gas). We do test for Sulfate-(SO4) as one of the 200 different contaminants, in this kit. Thank you for considering Safe Home, for your water testing needs. |
Question: | How can tests can be ran with this kit |
Answer: | Hello Doug, Thank you for your interest in our Safe Home ULTIMATE Drinking Water Test Kit, which provides testing for 200 different contaminants at our EPA Certified Laboratory. I am happy to share my 42 years of experience with testing drinking water, with some input. If you want to know what's coming into your home and being treated by your filtering system, test the water before the system. If you want to know what you are drinking, test the water after your filtering system. If you want to know how efficient your water filtering system is, you should purchase two kits: Use one kit to test the water before the filtration system and use the second kit to test the water after the filtration system. Note: this can be pricey...so evaluate accordingly. The math to calculate the percent removal of each contaminant is very simple. I only recommend the third option, because we receive countless emails asking us "how" to check the efficiency of a water treatment (filtering) system. The final decision is ultimately, yours. Thank you again for your interest in our Safe Home ULTIMATE Test Kit. |
Question: | Does it test Cya levels in the pool |
Answer: | Hello BG, thank you for your interest in our UKTIMATE drinking water kit with testing for 200 Parameters at our EPA certified laboratory. Unfortunately PFOA and PFOS are not included in this kit. We do have a kit that tests for a dozen perfluoro alkyl substances including PFOA and PFOS. Please feel free to contact us at our toll-free number 888–932–6699 and ask for safe home customer services. Thank you again for your interest in safe home drinking water test kits. |
Question: | Does it test for cya |
Answer: | The test is carried out by the lab, where you need to send samples of water by mail. In the box there are only vessels for filling with water, but there are no chemicals for conducting tests at home. There is only one test tube for testing water at home for bacterial contamination. Therefore, the cost of $300 is only for testing one source of water, but for 200 possible polluters. |

User questions & answers
Question: | for how long do i dip the strips in the water |
Answer: | No it did not have one |
Question: | Will any test strips work with the app or just Clorox |
Answer: | The holes on the sides are 2 millimeter then on the bottom is 3 millimeter |
Question: | Will they update the app for spas? I can’t add my pool info because it is under 1000 gal |
Answer: | I gave this as a gift but it was rather large. I'd say approximately 2 tablespoons maybe a bit more....but it would still fit in a large mug. |
Question: | I'm getting 6.8 ph & 180 total alkalinity with strips, which is way off but my poolmaster says 7.4 & 110 = normal. any ideas |
Answer: | Get one that will fit into the teapot! Until I purchased the Norpro 5503 I purchased a large tea ball but discovered it would not fit into the pot...small or medium if available; you can steep the leaves longer if necessary. |
Question: | Can I use these to see if my water filter is filtering chlorine (drinking water |
Answer: | There is no stamping on them, and I tossed any paperwork long ago, so I have no idea. They have worked fine for the two or three years I have had them. The chain on one of them came loose from the ball, but it has not affected the function; it just is no longer always attached to the ball. They stain as I do not put them in the dishwasher but a few times a year. i clean them with clorox only when cleaning the teapot and my mugs maybe twice a year, then pop them in the dishwasher to get rid of the clorox. |
Question: | Can it be used for salt water pool |
Answer: | It worked on a coffee mug |
Question: | Would this product be effective testing bleach in water? I’m going to a country where water isn’t potable and will add bleach to it in order cook |
Answer: | Sorry! If your mum loves cats she would probably still love this one though!! |
Question: | What is the difference between "free chlorine" and "chlorine |
Answer: | I ordered the dog tea infuser. I don’t know what color the cat one comes in. And the picture on my screen is a black cat! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a way I can get a refill of the pH regeant only |
Answer: | Well this unit holds about 5 gallons of water, each flush is less then quater of gallon depending how many times you pump to dispose the waste. 1 to 3 flushes should do it. It has a decent pressure, not like a real toilet but enough to clean the bowl. I took it with me camping and I had three females ranging from 7 and 34 years, of age. Believe it or not I only had to dispose the waste every two to three days depending on use. |
Question: | Is the hardness test total hardness (which includes magnesium), or calcium hardness |
Answer: | These are 8.5" tall with the legs open. With legs folded it is just under 1" tall. |
Question: | Does this test for free or toteal Chlorine |
Answer: | Sure it's the same as using a gas bbq |
Question: | How many tests will this kit perform |
Answer: | Yes, I’ve used this grill on many occasions. It works well cooking with skillets, pans, and even direct cooking on the grill with aluminum foil. |

Easy-to-use Kit
This convenient swimming pool test kit is a quick and easy way to find out what your pool needs to keep it looking clean and beautiful.
Checks for Six Key Parameters
The HTH 6-Way Test Kit for swimming pools checks for total chlorine, bromine, pH, total alkalinity, total hardness and cyanuric acid (CYA).
Achieve Balanced Water
Balanced water can help prevent corrosion, etching, equipment damage and scale buildup. It also ensures maximum sanitizer efficiency and optimizes comfort for swimmers.

LaMotte 2056 ColorQ Pro 7 Digital Pool Water Test Kit (Uses liquid reagents for all test factors except Cyanuric Acid, which uses tablets.)
- Features a photometer which gives you a digital reading of test results.
- Water resistant housing and carrying case provided.
- Tests Free Chlorine, Total Chlorine, Bromine, PH, Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, and Cyanuric Acid.
- Uses liquid reagents for all test factors except Cyanuric Acid, which uses tablets.
User questions & answers
Question: | Will the Taylor reagents work with the LaMotte meter |
Answer: | Yes, this kit will measure both free chlorine and total chlorine. When performing the chlorine test, the immediate result indicates your free chlorine level. Let the test sample sit for two minutes, allowing the chlorine to fully react - now the sample will indicate total chlorine. In a healthy pool, there should be no change between the two. Any change between the two indicates the presence of combined chlorine. Feel free to contact us at 9800) 854-1492 if you have any additional questions while using our test kit. |
Question: | How often do the chemicals have to be replaced |
Answer: | No, it doesn't use test strips because it's not electronic. It uses reagents and you compare the results to the color chart visually. |
Question: | what is the correct way to check the chlorine in the pool water |
Answer: | The Taylor K-2006 is far superior. It includes a test for Cyanuric Acid which this kit does not. You need to know your Cyanuric Acid (Cya) to know at what level to keep your chlorine. The K-2006 can also test up to 50 ppm in chlorine, this kit only goes to 5. This kit is pretty basic and if your pool is clean and clear it may be adequate, however if you ever get cloudy or green water this kit won't cut it. |
Question: | I just received my tester, but don't know what the correct numbers should be. Is there a chart that give the range for what the readings should be? I have a salt water pool |
Answer: | What do you mean by liquid chemical for test? It comes with 5 bottles to completely analyze your pool water. It is a very nice and thorough test for any pool owner. |
