11 best pool test kits

Pool test kits are essential tools for pool owners and operators to monitor and maintain water quality in swimming pools and hot tubs. These kits allow users to test various water parameters, including chemical levels, to ensure that the pool water is safe, clean, and properly balanced. Here's what you need to know about pool test kits:

  1. Function: Pool test kits are used to analyze the chemical composition of pool water. They provide information about key parameters such as chlorine levels, pH, alkalinity, and water hardness. Monitoring these parameters helps maintain water clarity and prevent issues like algae growth and equipment corrosion.

  2. Types of Test Kits:

    • Basic Test Strips: These are simple and affordable test strips with color-coded indicators that change based on the chemical levels in the water. Users compare the colors to a chart to determine the results.
    • Liquid Test Kits: Liquid test kits involve adding reagents (chemical solutions) to a water sample and observing the color change. These kits are typically more accurate than test strips and can provide precise measurements.
    • Digital Testers: Some advanced test kits use digital technology to provide highly accurate and easy-to-read results. Users dip the tester into the pool water, and it displays the readings digitally.
  3. Parameters Measured:

    • Chlorine: Measures the concentration of chlorine, which is essential for sanitizing the pool water.
    • pH: Determines the acidity or alkalinity of the water. Maintaining the correct pH level is crucial for swimmer comfort and equipment protection.
    • Alkalinity: Measures the total alkalinity of the water, which helps buffer pH changes and stabilize the pool environment.
    • Water Hardness: Evaluates the concentration of minerals in the water, primarily calcium and magnesium. Proper hardness levels prevent scale buildup.
    • Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): Tests the level of cyanuric acid, which helps protect chlorine from degradation due to sunlight.
  4. Frequency of Testing: Regular testing is essential, especially during the swimming season. Pool owners should test their water at least once a week and more frequently during periods of heavy pool usage or when water conditions change.

  5. Water Balancing: Based on the test results, pool owners can take corrective actions to balance the water chemistry. This may involve adding chemicals like chlorine, pH increasers or reducers, alkalinity adjusters, or calcium hardness increasers.

  6. Safety: Always follow safety precautions when handling pool chemicals and test kits. Store them in a cool, dry place, and keep them out of reach of children and pets.

  7. Maintenance: Test kits should be properly maintained to ensure accuracy. Keep the test reagents within their recommended shelf life, and clean and rinse test equipment thoroughly after each use.

  8. Instructions: Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when using a pool test kit to obtain accurate results.

By regularly using pool test kits, pool owners can ensure that their pool water remains safe, comfortable, and inviting for swimmers. Maintaining proper water chemistry also helps extend the life of pool equipment and surfaces while minimizing the risk of water-related problems.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used to detect chloride or salt content in a salt water pool
Answer: No this will only detect the levels for a chlorine/ bromine pool water pool.
Question: I have two bottles of your tests strips. One bottle is pool and spa and the other one is spa and hot tub. I’m getting two different readings
Answer: Hi there, the spa and hot tub are calibrated a little differently to work better in warmer water. If you would like to send me a picture of your tested strip I would be happy to see if maybe one of the sets were defective? Looking forward to hearing back from you. Best, Nathan, JNW Support.
Question: Can I use these to test the chlorine in my house water
Answer: I don’t think these test strips are sensitive enough to detect the amount of chlorine typically in tap water. Unless your tap water has really high chlorine content. These strips won’t detect anything under 1ppm.
Question: Alkanity range is incorrect. Should be 80-120 no
Answer: 80-120 is the best range and yes the range shown on the product label is wrong. Most people use these for hot tubs, if you use bromine than even 80 is too low bromine spas should be in the 100-120 range

Product features

Step 1: Remove a Strip from the Bottle
Step 2: Dip Strip in Pool Water for 2 Seconds

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a way I can get a refill of the pH regeant only
Answer: Well this unit holds about 5 gallons of water, each flush is less then quater of gallon depending how many times you pump to dispose the waste. 1 to 3 flushes should do it. It has a decent pressure, not like a real toilet but enough to clean the bowl. I took it with me camping and I had three females ranging from 7 and 34 years, of age. Believe it or not I only had to dispose the waste every two to three days depending on use.
Question: Is the hardness test total hardness (which includes magnesium), or calcium hardness
Answer: These are 8.5" tall with the legs open. With legs folded it is just under 1" tall.
Question: Does this test for free or toteal Chlorine
Answer: Sure it's the same as using a gas bbq
Question: How many tests will this kit perform
Answer: Yes, I’ve used this grill on many occasions. It works well cooking with skillets, pans, and even direct cooking on the grill with aluminum foil.

User questions & answers

Question: how many uses does it last when using 5 drops each time
Answer: Hello MG120, Thank you for inquiring about our Safe Home ULTIMATE Drinking Water Kit, with testing for 200 different contaminants at our EPA-certified lab. In this kit, we do not test for S-(elemental sulfur) nor do we test for H2S-(hydrogen sulfide gas). We do test for Sulfate-(SO4) as one of the 200 different contaminants, in this kit. Thank you for considering Safe Home, for your water testing needs.
Question: How can tests can be ran with this kit
Answer: Hello Doug, Thank you for your interest in our Safe Home ULTIMATE Drinking Water Test Kit, which provides testing for 200 different contaminants at our EPA Certified Laboratory. I am happy to share my 42 years of experience with testing drinking water, with some input. If you want to know what's coming into your home and being treated by your filtering system, test the water before the system. If you want to know what you are drinking, test the water after your filtering system. If you want to know how efficient your water filtering system is, you should purchase two kits: Use one kit to test the water before the filtration system and use the second kit to test the water after the filtration system. Note: this can be pricey...so evaluate accordingly. The math to calculate the percent removal of each contaminant is very simple. I only recommend the third option, because we receive countless emails asking us "how" to check the efficiency of a water treatment (filtering) system. The final decision is ultimately, yours. Thank you again for your interest in our Safe Home ULTIMATE Test Kit.
Question: Does it test Cya levels in the pool
Answer: Hello BG, thank you for your interest in our UKTIMATE drinking water kit with testing for 200 Parameters at our EPA certified laboratory. Unfortunately PFOA and PFOS are not included in this kit. We do have a kit that tests for a dozen perfluoro alkyl substances including PFOA and PFOS. Please feel free to contact us at our toll-free number 888–932–6699 and ask for safe home customer services. Thank you again for your interest in safe home drinking water test kits.
Question: Does it test for cya
Answer: The test is carried out by the lab, where you need to send samples of water by mail. In the box there are only vessels for filling with water, but there are no chemicals for conducting tests at home. There is only one test tube for testing water at home for bacterial contamination. Therefore, the cost of $300 is only for testing one source of water, but for 200 possible polluters.

User questions & answers

Question: Where is color chart for chlorine test
Answer: I have used this product on my Invisalign, the effect is remarkable, as for the others I don’t know, I’m sorry
Question: Does the blue box this comes in actually fit the tall, 2 oz bottles
Answer: It depends on what your jewelry is made of. My platinum and diamond engagment ring and wedding band get nicely cleaned in this., as well as my Tiffany 14K and diamond jewelry. I have quite a lot of Tiffany silver jewelry that can be cleaned in this machine, but in order to remove tarnish you MUST used silver polish. Water with or without detergent won't do anything for tarnish except clean the tarnish itself. Of course you know Tiffany cleans all their jewelry for free. Just take it to any Tiffany store and they will make it look like new.
Question: Does this kit test for: combined chlorine, total dissolved solids, phosphates, and the saturation index? I'm new to chemistry and wasn't able to tell
Answer: Yes it needs to be plugged in to work. It works great cleaning glasses with a drop of dish detergent. It’s totally worth the purchase.
Question: Can you test for cyanuric acid levels
Answer: Thank you for your question! Yes.We sell sprayer including power supply!

User questions & answers

Question: I have kit in pic. on acid demand test you must match color to 7.4. but there is no 7.4 on the vial. only colors shown are 7.2 and 7.6. what's missing
Answer: This product has worked really well for our 18,000 gallon pool. It says on the bottle that SeaKlear gives a 90 day no algae guarantee. It kills blue-green algae, green, yellow, and black algae. We make sure that we always maintain the chemistry of our pool.
Question: where is this manufactured
Answer: I've used this algaecide for years. I add one quart to my 22,000 gallon pool once when I open it in the early summer, and one more quart three months later. My understanding is that this brand is copper sulfate based, which no only kills existing algae, but prevents more from growing throughout its effective period of three months. I've never had a black fallout, but did have a greenish fallout one time when opening the pool after a particularly nasty winter. That could have been from excessive algae growth prior to the opening. A copper sulfate solution is blue, and most common algaes are green or a blueish green, so I would think any excess levels of algae that are killed would have a fallout similar in color to the algae types present.
Question: Does this kit test cyanuric acid levels
Answer: I would say probably not. It can cause skin and eye irritation. You can go on seaklear.com and look at their msds sheet to get a lot of useful information.
Question: Can you get refill reagent bottles
Answer: You must do some setup work first, brush mildew and algae in the areas most covered and remove it from the pool and for your size pool use chlorine ( 3-5 gallons ) to help, this is more of a maintenance issue than the algaecide 60 product itself. I hope you are running the filter as well and balancing the water as needed. This product helps with maintenance of the water from the growth of algae. I have used it for several years and it works just fine with our 35,000 gallon pool - a little goes a long way. Please note in the state of California you cannot use an algae product with copper due to certain environmental issues, I found this product does the job and does not use copper and works quite well as long as you follow basic instructions related to maintaining a pool. Pools by their nature are labor intensive. I usually wait three days for all the various chemicals to do their job.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this test kit also good for salt pools
Answer: If stored in high humidity (e.g., Miami summer weather) in spite of the foil packaging, they will not last a year. But, if kept in an air conditioned room (or even in a freezer), they should last a year or more, although there may be a diminution of potency. The best way to check is to have KNOWN high concentrations of N, P, and K, so that you can see if you get full color development. Freezing a soil sample that analyzed as "high" for all three elements when the chemicals were fresh should work to provide such a check (i.e., "positive control").
Question: can this be used for salt pools
Answer: Refer this to the manufacturer.
Question: how many CYA tests can you do with this kit
Answer: 50 tests of each of N, P, and K can be performed (measuring in comparison to a color card as "Low, Medium, or High"). BUT there are only enough extraction tablets for 50 extracts. So, the presumption is that you do N, P, and K tests on each extract. If you only want to do N or P, before disposing of extracts, then you'll be limited to 50 tests (the total number of soil extractions that you can perform).
Question: What is the difference between K-2005 and K
Answer: I suspect there is a way to use this for hydroponics but have not found anything to say how. It appears that the commonly used tests for hydroponics are ph and TDS or EC. Note that TDS and EC measurements are two different ways of measuring the same thing so you don't need both. The TDS (total dissolved solids) or EC (electrical conductivity) is a general gage of the quantity of nutrients in the water. The ph is important because if the ph is wrong the plants will not absorb the nutrients. That said amazon does sell inexpensive ph, TDS and EC meters that are easy to use. You should get reference solutions to calibrate these meters. (be careful not to contaminate your reference solutions with your nutrient solutions!) If you are looking to do custom nutrient solutions or replenishment of individual nutrients some of the nutrients can be measured using aquarium test kits but some of those test kits do not have a range that is fitting for hydroponics. I purchased the LaMotte N-P-K soil test kit for soil based gardening but I also do some hydroponics. I have not yet found tests (or a way to use this test kit) to measure the individual hydroponic nutrients.
