14 best natural algaecides
Natural algaecides are products used in swimming pool maintenance to control and prevent the growth of algae in pool water. They are considered a more environmentally friendly and less harsh alternative to traditional chemical algaecides. Here's what you need to know about natural algaecides:
Algae Control: Algae can be a common problem in swimming pools, causing green or cloudy water and making the pool less inviting for swimming. Natural algaecides are designed to combat this issue by inhibiting the growth of algae.
Ingredients: Natural algaecides typically contain plant-based or non-toxic ingredients that are safer for both humans and the environment compared to chemical algaecides.Common ingredients may include copper, silver, enzymes, or specific plant extracts.
Environmentally Friendly: Many pool owners choose natural algaecides because they are more environmentally friendly. These products often break down more easily in the pool water and are less likely to harm aquatic life when the pool water is discharged.
Non-Toxic: Natural algaecides are generally considered non-toxic when used as directed. This can be especially important for families with children or pets who use the pool.
Preventive Use: Some natural algaecides can be used as a preventive measure, reducing the likelihood of algae growth even before it becomes a problem. Regular use of these products can help maintain crystal-clear pool water.
Compatibility: It's important to ensure that the natural algaecide you choose is compatible with your pool's filtration system and other pool chemicals. Check the product label for any specific instructions or warnings.
Application: Natural algaecides are typically added directly to the pool water. The dosage and frequency of application can vary depending on the product, so it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Effectiveness: While natural algaecides can be effective at preventing and treating algae growth, they may not be as potent as some chemical alternatives. Their effectiveness can also depend on the type and severity of the algae problem.
Maintenance: To keep your pool water clear and algae-free, regular maintenance is essential. This includes proper filtration, maintaining chlorine levels, and following a routine cleaning schedule.
Storage and Safety: Always store natural algaecides according to the manufacturer's recommendations, and keep them out of reach of children. While they are generally safer than chemical algaecides, it's still important to handle them with care.
In summary, natural algaecides are pool maintenance products that use environmentally friendly and non-toxic ingredients to control and prevent algae growth in swimming pools. They can be a suitable option for pool owners looking for a gentler approach to pool maintenance while maintaining water quality and clarity.

Answer: | Yes it will. It does a great job. I will be getting more. Plus you don't need to put much in. Only a few drops. Depending on the size of the fountain |
Question: | Is this product for cats drinking out of fountain |
Answer: | Yes it is. I was looking for a chemical that would be safe for a fountain that cats and birds occasionally drink from, and this does fit that bill. I see in this thread that there is quite some confusion about this topic, because the label says that it is a pesticide and lists warnings for human consumption while at the same time saying it is safe for pets and birds (but not most fish). In fact both are true - it is all about the quantities. Most of the things we consume are dangerous when consumed in pure form or large amounts. Large amounts of table salt are harmful, just like large amounts of chlorine which is typically added to our drinking water. In fact, even large amounts of completely purified and de-ionised water will kill you. That obviously does not mean that you should not drink water or eat anything with salt in it - it just means that an excess of anything can be bad. The active chemical in this algaecide is polyquat. Polyquat has been extensively studied and starts to show toxicity in various animals at ingested amounts of 0.5g-1g per kg body weight per day over an extended period of time. This product contains 30% polyquat, so for a child that weighs 20 pounds drinking in the order of a tablespoon per day directly out of the bottle would be likely to cause problems. This is why there is a warning on the label: if anyone would ingest a large amount directly from the bottle this could definitely be harmful. However if you use the product as directed, you actually add only one drop of the product per gallon of water. Even a tiny kitten that weighs 2 pounds would have to drink 30 gallons a day from that fountain to ingest enough of the chemical to get into the range of adverse effects. Obviously that is not very likely. It is possible that some subtle effects are not detected in studies, so it is typically recommended to stay well below the dose that would cause any issues, but as a kitten is unlikely to drink more than a cup it stays about 500x under the exposure limits. Finally: some chemicals can accumulate in the body and thereby long-term exposure to small quantities can still become dangerous over time. Retention of polyquat in the body is minimal, so this is not a real concern for this product. I hope that clarifies some of the confusion. source: https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/122130603#section=Top |

User questions & answers
Question: | safe for plants |
Answer: | i add a couple drops every time I add water. |
Question: | what are the ingredients |
Answer: | Algae Break 90 can be used in both regular chlorinated pools and salt water pools. It does an amazing job in preventing algae growth as long as you keep a proper chlorine level and your ph and alkalinity are within range. This is my second year using Algae Break 90 and it really works! |
Question: | Instructions say 1 ounce per 5 gallons. My birdbath is not 5 gallons! How much per 1 gallon? Math is not my best thing |
Answer: | I do use chlorine. My pool is chlorine based, but I do not close my pool during the winter. I used to close and every spring we had the worst time getting out pool clear again in the spring. So about 3 years ago, I discovered Algae Break through my local pool company. I pour a bottle in every 3 months and my pool stays absolutely clear. I run it all winter and it is out in the open, no cover, but I have a automatic pool vacuum that I also run about 2 times a day. I live in North Central Alabama, so it gets pretty cold in the winter. Hope this helps! |
Question: | How often do you add this to the water |
Answer: | It means that the bottle is good to treat a pool up to 10,000 gallons. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this effect trout or bass |
Answer: | I treat my 100' x 200' x 4' deep quarry with 1 bottle of liquid Cutrine Plus that diluted, and I use a 1 gallon juicer to throw the mixture around initially, then it disperses itself throughout the whole quarry. I've seen algae react immediately on impact when I threw it in. I throw it in on one side of the quarry only and it spreads itself. The change is so dramatic that I've had swimmers over the decades willing to buy more for the quarry just to see the crystal-clear water. In 1994, I had a problem with red algae occurring, and didn't know how to treat it. I had the professor from Lehigh Univrsity and Muhlenberg College look at it and analysis it, but she had no solution to get rid of it. In my conversation with a man about selling me a tank with sand as a filter, he asked me why I didn't just use this product. I hadn't heard of it before, but he was correct. I called their tech department and followed through from there, and I've never been sorry. Cutrine Plus is tremendously effective and safe. |
Question: | Can cutrine plus liquid be used in combination with nt max microbial digester to kill algae and then have the microbes clean up |
Answer: | Kills algae .....I would say not safe for plants ..... |
Question: | Do u treat the entire pond or just were the algae is |
Answer: | That's a great question ! There are no ingredients listed on the bottle. I am going to ask the seller myself. |
Question: | Approximately how much to treat a 50' x 100' pond & how often? 1 to 4 1/2 feet deep |
Answer: | My bird bath isn't 5 gallons either! It's only 1/4 of a gallon, so I put in about 10-12 drops. That's the best math I could come up with! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will my fish try to eat it |
Answer: | Cutrine plus will NOT kill milfoil nor hydrilla. However, a combination of liquid Cutrine plus with liquid Weedtrine D will control hydrilla. Aquacide pellets will control the milfoil. |
Question: | What size area does a 30 lb bag treat |
Answer: | We have 1 year old bass in our pond. I use this product weekly at full strength and just kinda lightly spray over the surface of the pond (1/3 acre). We haven't had any fish-kill. We use this product, muck away and pond dye - and our pond was covered in complete algae a year ago. If you have a lot of algae, I recommend you scoop it out when it starts dying. I used a pool skimmer. |
Question: | Will cutrine plus Granular Algaecide kill Chara |
Answer: | We are the manufacturer of Cutrine Plus Liquid. This product is a copper algaecide and can be used to eliminate algae in ponds, etc. When using another product we do recommend waiting 2 weeks between applications and contacting the manufacturer to make sure that product is compatible with a copper algaecide. For more questions please contact us at 800-558-5106. |
Question: | Will it kill milfoil and hydrilla |
Answer: | Hi, we are the manufacturer of the Applied Biochemists Cutrine Plus. This product should be diluted at a 9:1 ratio with water (14.2 oz of Cutrine Plus for every gallon of water your sprayer holds) and sprayed onto the algae. Just spray where the algae is, and treat the pond in 1/3 to 1/2 sections allowing a couple weeks between treatments. Do not use this product in water with Koi, Goldfish, or Carp as the copper in the chemical is not safe for those fish. If you have any other questions, we are always happy to help. You can reach us at (800) 558-5106; ext. 1, we are available Monday - Friday 9 AM until 7 PM Eastern. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this used for my ivy plant? Just spray over the leaves |
Answer: | Eileen,I used Physan 20 to kill fungus & mold in my landscaping this year. It worked. I now use Physan 20 once a month as routine maintenance, per the instructions. I don't have the instructions in front of me, but there is a mixture that they recommend for cleaning tools and it is used on farm equipment, so I'm thinking it would be fine for your mower, as long as you didn't wet the engine or air filter. I only use a few tablespoons per application, and still haven't made a dent in the bottle this year. Nothing else worked for me. Hope you have success! |
Question: | How do I use this for a tomato plant I have |
Answer: | I apply to my pond twice a year and I have never seen my fish try to eat it, I have catfish and bass. |
Question: | Can i use this for cleaning the roots of my lucky bamboo plant? It is a submerged plant and is growing algae in the roots |
Answer: | We have a 1/2 acre pond - I use a hand spreader and only do the outside ring of the pond once every two weeks - the 30 lbs only lasts for two treatments or one month - if you did the entire 1/2 acre it would take most of a bag |
Question: | Will this product kill fungus spores? Is it corrosive to metal, would it be good to use on a lawn mower |
Answer: | Chara should be treated in spring and summer or when weed is soft and supple. Mature, established Chara may become calcified in hard water and very difficult to control. A single early application will usually control Chara for an entire season. I found this info here: http://www.killlakeweeds.com/products/cutrine-plus-granular |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this a barley product |
Answer: | Not sure why you would grow barley in a pond, but this product will shade out the light to slow growth of green plants under the water |
Question: | can you use this in swimming pools |
Answer: | It does state on the bottle that it is safe for swimming and does not harm fish. I don't know about putting this in a swimming pool with all of the other chemicals that are used in pools. |
Question: | Is there a shelf live to aquashade? If I let the product sit for a year or more does it lose it's effectiveness |
Answer: | I have had it on a shelf for a year or more and reorder more when the container is 1/2 or 2/3 gone. I have not found it's effectiveness weakening at all. |
Question: | I have a rather small fish pond (900 gallons).......will this be too much for the size |
Answer: | Yes, this is far too much. It would take less than an ounce to dye your 900 gallon pond. You can try searching for "Crystal Clear Pond tint" to find a dye designed for small ponds. |

Eliminates phosphates (algae's primary food source) to starve algae. Can be used all season & is perfect for pool closing in the fall to control algae during the winter months. Unlike algaecides that kill existing algae (resulting in a release of phosphates by the dying algae), phosfree eliminates phosphates from the water to solve even the most stubborn algae problems. Weekly dosage: 4 ozper 8, 000 gallon, (increase dosage for excessive phosphate levels).
From the Manufacturer

- Phosphate-limiting pool additive to prevent algae growth
- Enhances any sanitizer system and is 100-percent safe for family and environment

User questions & answers
Question: | Some algea prevention chemicals will add metals such as copper to the water. Are there any metals in Phos Free |
Answer: | Both are worthless! Look at the halosource sea klear phosphate remover, it actually removes phosphates from pool water! 32 oz. Of sea klear will remove more phosphates than 30 liters of phos-free. |
Question: | Can you swim in the pool while the Phosree application and the pump ares still working to reduce the algae |
Answer: | I don’t believe it has copper in it. It quickly clears dull water. It is a Technologically advanced and highly concentrated pool water clarifier. It Can be used with all filter medias. It is not pH sensitive and will not adversely affect the pH of pool water. Ultimate 6-in-1 clarifier (agglomeration, coagulation, flocculation, adhesion, compaction, and neutralization) |
Question: | Do you still have to use shock if you use this product or is it used in place of shock? I am a brand new pool owner. Thanks for any help you can give |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Any one know what the difference is between this product and Pool Perfect + Phos Free |
Answer: | The cap is the sprayer. You just squeeze the bottle and spray over surface of the pool. This is the best clarifier I have ever used. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This looks like the same item as pond-zyme only in liquid form, is this a correct assessment? i use the powdered pond-zyme but thinking of trying this |
Answer: | I use this for my Koi pond and there are 2 turtles in it and they are fine but I do not know with an aquarium it may be to stagnant |
Question: | What is the temperature range for these enzymes |
Answer: | This just removes Phosphates from the water so the algae has nothing to snack on. |
Question: | If you use this, do you also need to use other products to control algae |
Answer: | We were told to wait at least 6 hours after putting it in the pool. That was from our pool guy so not definitive. Pretty sure you are not suppose to immediately swim in the pool. |
Question: | Can this be used with a turtle aquarium |
Answer: | These are very, very different products. Phosfree is a maintenance product designed to keep pool phosphate levels very low-to-absent. Phosphate prevents chlorine from killing algae. If you have algae blooms already, you should shock and brush the pool. Then test for phosphate (Natural Chemistry makes a very easy to use test strip; bottle of 10 for about $12, I think) and determine how much phosphate remover to use. If you can, consult a pool supply store as to what specific product to use. I like a concentrated product called PhosOut, harder to find than the Natural Chemistry series, but I think it works better for both treating a major phosphate level or for preventive maintenance. Hopefully, you learn your lesson with the "major" level once and for all. It's is very wise to be proactive at suppressing phosphate. |

Why be proactive with water treatments?
A natural pond has a constant supply of fresh water flowing into it, such as from a stream or spring. Water also flows out of a natural pond, taking fish waste and other toxins with it. This isn’t true for most garden ponds as they are closed systems. Garden ponds also tend to be much smaller than natural ponds, so they do not offer the amount of water per fish that you find in nature. For these reasons, water treatments are necessary to keep water conditions safe for both fish and plant life and for clearer water.
Following specific steps each season allows you to create a backyard retreat you’ll enjoy all year long! For more information about what’s needed each season, check out more below.
Spring Start Up - Get Your Pond Ready!
It's pond startup time! Whether filling a new pond or re-establishing an existing pond, following some simple steps at startup will yield benefits you’ll enjoy all season long. The 3 key steps that must be taken are making your tap water safe, activating the natural pond cycle, and maintaining sparkling clean water to boost fish and plant health. Once the water temperature reaches above 42⁰F, you’ll also want to start feeding your fish again. It is important to take care of all of your plants in the spring with API AQUATIC PLANT MEDIA and API AQUATIC PLANT FOOD TABLETS as they will be the key to success in most ponds! Lastly, monitor the water conditions in your pond with the API POND MASTER TEST KIT, an easy and accurate way to test 4 key water parameters including pH, ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate.
Summer - Provide Regular Care And Enjoy Your Pond
Summer is the time to sit back and enjoy all of your hard work! You’ll need to continue regular care for your pond that includes adding beneficial bacteria like API POND-ZYME and API POND ECOFIX. While everything looks great, you’ll want to closely monitor the water conditions so that you can protect the health of your pond including plants and fish. Algae grows in the presence of sunlight where there is excess nutrients in the pond water for the algae to feed on. API POND ALGAEFIX has been used for over 18 years to effectively control green water algae, string algae, and blanketweed without harming fish or plants. At this time it could be beneficial to do a partial water change, adding API POND STRESS COAT and API POND SALT and fertilizing your pond plants.
Autumn - Prepare For Winter
Performing a few simple steps in the autumn will prepare your fish and plants for the long, cold winter ahead and lay the foundation for a healthy start in the spring. We recommend removing excess organic matter (like leaves and grass clippings, for example) to reduce fish stress during the winter months. Use a net to remove as many leaves as possible. Routine addition of API POND ECOFIX or API POND-ZYME throughout the season promotes healthy water quality and reduces the amount of organic matter you need to remove at the end of the season. It is also important to perform a 25% water change, adding API POND STRESS COAT and API POND SALT to make the tap water safe and to replenish important electrolytes which aid fish during the stressful winter months.
Winter – Keep Pond Water Circulating
In cooler climates, when the water temperature drops, fish will naturally eat less than at warmer temperatures. Once the water temperature drops below 42⁰F, fish will cease eating and if they have been fed properly through the summer and autumn, they will have ample reserves to survive the rigors of winter. It is also important to ensure your pond has circulation to keep an open area on the ponds surface throughout the winter months to prevent the buildup of toxic gases which can accumulate from the decomposition of organic matter.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be added when you pour in Bright and Clear? Would that be beneficial |
Answer: | i do it all the time. both help to keep things clean |
Question: | When using this, do I still need to test for bromine, calcium, ph, and alkalinity or do I ignore any of these with natural treatment |
Answer: | Same as powder but I like the liquid better because It mixes quickly into pond when applied close to your pumps. Pumps draw it in and then your water features dispenser it evenly through out your pond depending on how many water features you have. I have three but then again my pond is 45 feet long and 6-8 feet wide. Horseshoe shaped with a bridge to cross it. |
Question: | Is this compatible with mineral sanitizers such as the Nature2 system |
Answer: | I don't really know the temperature range. We start using it around the last of March here in Tennessee along with zapl Algafix according to the directions. It stays perfectly clear during the winter months. The sludge comes to the top of the water for a while which you need to scoop off with a net. Then after that it will stay perfectly clear with if continue treatments according to the directions. I have had koi pounds for over 20 years and have tried many ways to keep the water clear and these two products are the best by far. Great stuff. Just be patient for a little while and you have a great pond. It also does not seem to bother my fish. |
Question: | Can this be added when you pour in Bright and Clear? Would that be beneficial |
Answer: | I found this product to be VERY effective in reducing pond algae but I probably would have been even happier if I had been diligent and consistent in its application. The algae multiplied quickly whenever I turned my back and forgot about the Ecofix. So the barley straw, ultraviolet light and other products I kept in the pond really didn't seem to make a huge dent in the problem without the Pondcare. So, probably use the Pondcare Ecofix and a UV light filter and call it a day. |

User questions & answers
Question: | So I still need to buy water clarifier if I buy this |
Answer: | My son works at a pool supply company and he suggested I try this in place of the Aqua Finesse. I tried it and it seems to work fine for me. It saves us a lot of money. |
Question: | Is this an alone product? Or do I still use ph leveler and chlorine tablets |
Answer: | We are the manufacturers of Leisure Time products. Leisure Time Enzyme helps break down organics that can cause water line build up in your spa. Leisure Time Bright and Clear helps in clearing cloudy water. Wait 15 minutes between applications. If you have any other questions please chat with us at www.poolspacare.com or call 800-455-4311. |
Question: | Can someone please share the ingredient list? Any information on the ingredients is really helpful - "enzyme product" isn't enough information for me |
Answer: | We always recommend checking in on your Calcium, pH and Alkalinity on a regular basis to ensure they are properly balanced. This does not change for any sanitizing system you are on. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Is this stuff the same as AquaFinesse? Because if so, it is WAY more affordable! Has anyone compared the two |
Answer: | Hello, we are the manufacturer of Leisure Time spa products. Leisure Time Enzyme is compatible with chlorine, bromine, ozone, and biguanide sanitizers. If you have any other questions, feel free to call us at (800) 455-4311 or chat with us online at leisuretimespa.com. |
